Testimony. The clues we now have about whether any of them could be facing criminal charges. And walking away. President trump abruptly leaves his summit with north koreas leader empty handed after deciding what kim jongun offered wasnt good enough. Is no deal better than a bad deal . Lets begin with whats happening right now behind closed doors of the Intel Committee of the house. Michael cohen on capitol hill for the third day in a row, being questioned by lawmakers. Cohen yesterday in an extraordinary public hearing put in more than seven hours following nine hours on tuesday. And then we come to this morning. The president and his legal team grappling with the implications of the grippingly detailed testimony from a longtime insider who turned on the man he once idolized. Cohen laid out a pattern of potential crimes and an atmosphere in the trump Family Business that he said was built on lies and threats. And in a key moment, cohen, who pleaded guilty of lying to the very body he addressed yesterday, claimed federal prosecutors in new york pose a danger to President Trump. When was the last communication with President Trump or someone acting on his behalf . I dont have the specific date, but it was a while ago. What did he or his agent communicate to you . Unfortunately, this topic is actually something thats being investigated right now by the Southern District of new york. And ive been asked by them not to discuss it, not to talk about these issues. Fair enough. Is there any other wrongdoing or illegal act that you are aware of regarding donald trump that we havent yet discussed today . Yes. And, again, those are part of the investigation thats currently being looked at by the Southern District of new york. The president speaking in hanoi overnight, firing back. Blasting cohens testimony for the most part. He lied a lot. But it was very interesting because he didnt lie about one thing, he said no collusion with the russian hoax. I said i wonder why he didnt lie about that too like he did about everything else. He lied about so many different things. Im impressed he didnt say it was collusion. He said no collusion. And i was a little impressed by that frankly. He could have gone all out. He went 95 instead of 100 . There is no collusion. I call it the witchhunt. This should never happen to another president. Nbcs ken delaney has been following every detail of this conversation. Ken, what a day yesterday. Im sure theres interesting things going on right now. Whats your take from cohens enigmatic comment about the Southern District, whats that all about . Reporter chris, what that exchange made clear is that whatever happens with the special counsel Robert Muellers investigation, President Trump faces a very real danger from ongoing investigations by federal prosecutors in the Southern District of new york. Nbc news reported last week that the Southern District has two open investigations, one into individuals associated with the Trump Organization and one involving the trump inaugural and Michael Cohen is cooperating and aproviding information in both. Cohen confirmed this is the case. He raised potential issues of bank fraud, tax fraud, charity fraud, insurance fraud. And now a lot of that happened before donald trump was president. But he also brought a check that donald trump wrote as part of a recompense to Michael Cohen. Trump wrote that check while in office. Thats why chairman Elijah Cummings said he believe donald trump committed a crime while in office. This is why democrats are starting to talk about impeachment. This is a Serious Investigation that may last long after Robert Mueller has filed his report. What do we imagine is going on behind closed doors right now . Reporter the House Intelligence Committee is grilling Michael Cohen about russia. As donald trump said Michael Cohen did pour cold water on the russian collusion narrative. He said he was aware of no evidence that donald trump or his campaign colluded. He said he had never been to pr prague people were saying ask about prague. Finally. Reporter finally they did. He said under oath he was not there. I think most people are accepting that as the final word on that issue. And my sources in Congress Also believe that he was not in prague. He did raise a couple of issues he will be sure to be grilled on now behind closed doors. He said he overheard a conversation between roger stone on the phone with donald trump giving trump advanced knowledge of a document dump of hacked emails by wikileaks. That doesnt get you to collusion between donald trump and the russians. There are reports that donald trump told Robert Mueller that that never happened and he didnt get a heads up. That raises an interesting issue if true about who is telling the truth. Thank you so much. I want to bring in matt miller, former chief spokesman for the justice department, jake sherman and barrett berger, assistant attorney for both the Eastern District of new york and the southern direct of new york. Whats tantalizingly hanging out there from cohens testimony youd want to get at . I think the piece im most interested in that is in their jurisdiction remember the Intelligence Committee is not probing the Campaign Finance violations. I think the piece id want to dive into is this question about Michael Cohens testimony to congress and whether the president either directed or implied or in some way gave him the impression he wanted him to lie. We know thats what Michael Cohen pled guilty to. Theres he called it a code. How complicating is that . He never maybe said right now directly i need you to lie for me. Yeah, thats exactly right. It wasnt clear whether he had a conversation closely before or it was months before where trump had said theres no business with russia. Id want to know more about the testimony that was changed after it was circulated to trumps attorneys. A statement was put out last night that said we never asked for any edits. Those details where we know that mikeli mikeli Michael Cohen lied to congress, thats what id want to follow up on. Jake, one of the things you tweeted yesterday, doesnt it seem likely that after today cummings will call donald trump jr. , eric trump and ivanka trump to the committee. I thought aoc and eddie go mmez did well. How busy are House Democrats going to be based on what cohen has told them . It seems almost certain at some point over the next month, two months, it depends when mueller wraps up. It depends on a lot of outside circumstances. But based on my reporting it seems certain theyre going to call more people from the Trump Organization. Allen weisselburg, a name that came up a number of times yesterday, all day yesterday. According to nbcs reporting he has not been cooperating extensively with federal authorities. I have to imagine hell be brought up to capitol hill. Don jr. And eric arent in the administration, have no case for executive privilege. I guess ivanka could say shes an Administration Official and the white house could try to block that testimony or speaking to the committee. I would find that hard to believe given shes not discussing things that happened in the white house. It seems certain that i mean, Michael Cohen testified under oath that the children had a lot of knowledge of what was going on in the organization. Remember, i mean, most of these testimonies, public testimonies, start with conversations behind closed doors between the Committee Majority and the witnesses. So if the trump kids are called to capitol hill, i imagine that will begin behind closed doors. Republicans tried to make a lot of hay about that. They asked Michael Cohen who did he speak to before the hearing. Of course he spoke to the majority lawmakers, the majority staff before they came out in public to see if this was worth their time. Ive always maintained that impeachment is really the finale here. All of these hearings are equally damaging and its ironic because the Trump White House for many months before the election tried to make the case that divided government would be better for them. We saw yesterday in real time how horrible divided government is for this president. Leave aside the mueller report. Just yesterday, that sucked up a lot of oxygen and caused a lot of embarrassment, for the whit house. Never fun to be in the minority. It looks particularly unpleasant right now. To your point about name dropping. I want to place this exchange between aoc and Michael Cohen. To your knowledge did the president every provide inflated assets to an Insurance Company . Yes. Who else knows that the president did this . Allen weissellburg and matthew calimari. Do you think we need to review his Financial Statements and tax returns . Yes, youd find it at the trump org. Barrett, obviously she very carefully and methodically sort of laid the groundwork for people who could be called in, subpoenas that could be issued. Having said that, what struck you in terms of what you heard and the potential for some other line in the sdny investigation . I think one of the most interesting parts about that exchange is shes laying a road map here as to what sort of future investigations could look like. That is part of the value of yesterdays hearing and really, you know, all three days of these. Its not just what Michael Cohen provided this week, but what it says for sort of future hearings they could have. Identifying list of witnesses they should call in. Documents that could potentially be subpoenaed. And other lines of inquiry that investigators are going to look at. She talked about his trump property she drives to when shes at home, you know, and shes going to work. Right, exactly. I think what she was focusing on was sort of the umbrella of financial crimes that could be implicated here. Whether its bank fraud, tax fraud, insurance fraud. My guess is these are well within what the Southern District of new york is focusing on. It was not news into the federal prosecutors that have looking into this. They are looking closely at this. What was striking also for me was while the republicans repeatedly called out Michael Cohen for his lies and thats why hes going, obviously, to prison, mark meadows was particularly rough on him. At no point did the republicans do this point by point defense. Like they didnt go after him on the facts. They didnt question him in any real way for example, about the checks. Were you surprised by the way the republicans handled this . You know, i dont know what they could have done. The president has admitted to the Campaign Finance allegations. Michael cohen was the lawyer and they relied on him to do it correctly. I dont know how they can drefed the president s comments. It shows the peril for the republicans on all these allegations. You get out attacking Michael Cohen as a liar is one thing. Defending the president is a Dangerous Branch to crawl out on. You never know when hes going to saw it off and leave you standing at the end. Hes done it repeatedly to people who have defended him. As we see the investigations go forward and you see more hearings like this, i think it just underlines how tough a position the republicans are in. They may to continue to defend him religiously, but its very tough to do that with a factual defense. You can attack witnesses, try to undermine them. Defending the president s actions there doesnt appear to be appetite for that. Im going to let that be the last word. We have breaking news. Thanks to all of you. Much more we could be talking about. We have breaking news out of israel where Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been indicted for bribery and fraud. Hes been in office since 2009. Matt bradley joins us now with the details. What do we know . Reporter well, so far what were hearing is kind of scant on details. But what we have is that the attorney general in israel has decided tod indict the Prime Minister. This would be the first time an israeli Prime Minister has been indicted. This is on three different investigations, all of them involving allegations of corruption. Now, this is crucial for the United States. Right now, of course, the president and his soninlaw, Jared Kushner are trying to come up with a comprehensive middle east peace plan. Its something the president has floated since the campaign back in 2016. Benjamin netanyahu is a crucial part of selling this deal, not just to the israelis, but to the gulf states who are also supporting it, including saudi arabia. If benjamin netten yahanyahu is convicted, it could be a problem. There are elections in april. These are going to be very hotly contested elections. Its possible that these allegations are going to defeat nett nett nett netanya netanyahu. Its not clear whether hell be able to survive these allegations and this unprecedented historical indictment. Thank you for that. Again, the breaking news here, Benjamin Netanyahu after two years of an intense investigation, we have been waiting, we have been hearing that an announcement befowhethe indictment would be coming. Indeed, theyve indicted Benjamin Netanyahu. Well have more on this throughout the day. Meanwhile, no deal. The president turning away, walking away from the deal that was on the table with north korea. Plus, how americans are reacting this morning to Michael Cohens bombshell revelations. Back to normal. Congressman cummings making a sweeping call to his colleagues for normalcy. Are the days of bipartisan civility over . Civility over . Guys do whatever it takes to deal with shave irritation. So, we reimagined the razor with the new gillette skinguard. It has a unique guard between the blades. Thats designed to reduce irritation during the shave. Because we believe all men deserve a razor just for them. The best a man can get. Gillette. Right now, President Trump is heading home from his second summit with north Korean Leader kim jongun empty handed. Negotiations in vietnam collapsed early today. A planned signing ceremony was canceled and the president s trip cut short. The sticking point, according to President Trump, was kims demand all sanctions on north korea be lifted. We thought, and i thought and secretary pompeo felt that it wasnt a good thing to be signing anything. We had some options and at this time we decided not to do any of the options. And well see where that goes. But it was a very interesting two days. I think, actually, it was a very productive two days. But sometimes you have to walk. This was just one of those times. Joining me now phil rutger and our National Security analyst, a former special assistant to president obama, ned price. Good to see both of you. I dont know if you saw the tweet from adam schiff, no fan of the president. He said today walking away from the summit was better than making a bad deal. Its also the result of a poorly planned strategy. I want to take those kind of one by one. Ned, lets start with the first part of that. Senator lindsey graham, mitch mcconnell, even, you know, a lot of coloniumnists made this poins well, its better to have walked away. I think it is better to have walked away. I dont think we should have been in this situation to begin with. For over a year now President Trump has engaged with north korea but its been a lost year. President trumps engagement to date from real diplomacy. We have yet to see real dipl diplomacy. Weve seen pageantry, in my mind, designed more with President Trumps domestic political standing and poll numbers in mind. Its no wonder that he consistently has raised this on the campaign trail. He was revelled in the crowds chanti chanting nobel. He asked the japanese Prime Minister to nomnainate him for nobel prize. I think the end of this chapter needs to be the start of real diplomacy. And for real diplomacy to start, we need President Trump to take a step back. We need the professionals, led in this case by a very capable team at the state department to actually be the one setting the stage for possible success. We cant leave that to our president. If we continue to do that, well end up nowhere. Thats where you well know, phil, that and adam schiff tweeted part of it was a poorly planned strategy. That the basic differences in expectations from the two sides say what would be required in terms of sanctions relief. Could have been cleared up if there were the traditional groundwork done at the lower level. Some
