Get out the votes. We were doing a ton of data we built ourselves. All the different movements were correlated with our data. We knew the persuadable voters were. And every dollar we were spending was about how do we get to them as efficiently as possible. The notion of what they were doing didnt register to us as being impactful. If you look at our data operation, which has gone down to be very revered by facebook, all built from scratch, not traditional political people, we knew exactly why the data was moving, why it was moving, what messaging we were sending. At the end of the day, again, we had a great candidate and the candidate had a message that resonated with america. He campaigned his butt off. The last day we did six stops, seven stops, doing the rallies. He had crowds like you couldnt kma imagine. All our data models proved right. You can look at it monday morning quarterback and said maybe you should have looked at those times. I personally think what happens is all these people thought trump was going to lose. They all predicted trump was going to lose. They were wrong. The american leelectorate chose the opposite. Instead of saying oh, wait we got it wrong. Maybe it was russia. I think now weve spent two years going through that nonsense. The one thing the Mueller Report was conclusive is on there was no collusion with the Trump Campaign. Everything the president s been saying and ive been saying for two years has been fully authenticated. Are you concerned that Russian Intelligence Services were trying to find ways to influence you and other people close to trump . For example, we can go into the meeting with the russian state owned bank you had in december 2016 where he brought a bag of dirt from your parents your grandparents home village in belarus and presented it to you. At the time, did that feel uncomfortable . Did that feel like this guy was trying to maybe offer you some business incentives to influence the Trump Campaign and Trump Administration policy . Yeah, so, again, we never discussed business. Ive done testimony on this. Everything was unusual at that time. We were like i said an outsider campaign. The advice i got during the campaign actually from Henry Kissinger is everyone around the world was uncomfortable about trump. Thats not a bad thing. If you win, what will happen is everyone will have to start doing a new calculation of what are they getting from america thats too good and what are they willing to give in order to kind of keep what they have. Its set off a fresh view of americas Foreign Policy to say how do we rebalance a lot of these relationships . So we had people coming at us from everywhere. I met with the Russian Ambassador in the transition. That was an area of proof we didnt have a connection to the russians during the campaign. And then he asked me to meet with gorkov. Much has been done about it. I think whats important is the fact weve been focused for the last two years while everyone is losing their mind about the Mueller Report, President Trump has been figuring out how to stimulate our economy and get out of these longstanding wars and weve done that. With that meeting and other contacts with Foreign Governments, was one thing the fbi was concerned about when they were looking into your background for the security clearance at the white house, can you just make a general on the other hand on the record assurance, are there foreign entang entanglements you have that could influence your decisions in the white house . Ive been in the government for two years. Again, its the last thing i ever thought id be doing in my life. I had three companies, i was doing very, very well. I had a great life. A lot less controversial than i guess things are now. But what i did was, i hired some d. C. Lawyers, and i said look at my financials. I have extensive financial holdings. I was successful in my business dealings. Can you tell me can i do this . We went to the office of government ethics, which was the obama office of government ethics. They made recommendations of what i needed to devest and to keep. I think what youve seen on my performance, the files ive been working on, i think ive made progress. I think that ive adhered to every single one of the ethics waivers they want want me to keep. Ive done nothing thats influenced any of my decisions. I work for the president , the president has certain Foreign Policy objectives hed like to see accomplished. If you look at what i did with the mexico deal, i worked closely with the mexicans to come up with the usmca. I think that will add about 500,000 jobs. Should have a nice increase in gdp. And we did that in a way that doesnt benefit me personally. The stuff im doing in the middle east, i think its taken us a while. Were going to unveil our plans in the next couple of months. Weve done a lot of things i think are very important for israels security. Thats one of the president s priorities. He campaigned on it. I think with china, the area where ive also worked with ambassador lighthizer and security mnuchin, were making progress towards trying to rebalance that relationship, which has been out of whack for a very long time. I can tell you very definitively theres been no actions ive taken that have benefitted me financially. I think ive been fully vetted now after two years of 19 hours of testimony in different places. Theres been numerous front page stories talking about the potential areas where there could be conflicts. We want people who have been successful in different areas going into government. That you have to adhere to compliance. I think ive done a good job in doing that. One relationship youve developed is one with the saudi crown prince. The u. S. Intelligence services concluded that he ordered the murder of jamal khashoggi, do you dispute that . Im not going to dispute u. S. Intelligence recommendations. Im not going to talk about anything intelligence related. What we did when we went to saudi arabia for the president s first trip was an important trip. We were able to lay out what this president s priorities were. The number one priority was countering iran. Weve worked with our allies closely to figure out how do you push back from irans aggression. Anywhere you look where theres terrorism, theyre being funded by iran. The number two priority was to defeat isis. I think youve seen that the president has turned up the pressure. Weve destroyed the physical caliphate. The third priority was defeating the ideology of extremism. Weve worked closely with the saudis to figure out how do you clean out the poison that was being taught in the mosques. I think were making more progress than people thought wed be able to do. The fourth priority was the israel Palestinian Peace process. Weve worked very hard on that. I think youll see well put out in a couple of months hopefully it provides a framework to break through a difficult problem thats been plaguing that region for a very, very long time. Has the murder of khashoggi impacted your relationship with saudi arabia . Did you give the saudi prince advice on how to handle the fallout after the murder . Again, the advice i gave was be as transparent as possible. Obviously, we have to make sure theres accountability for what happened. The state departments worked very do you think hes followed that advice, to be as transparent as possible. Well find out. Secretary pompeo and the state department are leading the charge. Theyre working with the turk and saudis to get to the bottom of what happened. Its a terrible tragedy what happened. And, again, its absolutely a horrible thing good morning, youve been listening to the time 100 interview with Jared Kushner, soninlaw of President Trump. Someone we dont hear from publicly very often. This is the first time we have heard from him since the publication of the redacted Mueller Report. With me now, hallie jackson. Michael steele, and jonathan capehart. I want to unpack some of what Jared Kushner had to say. Hallie, to hear him say it, it was an untraditional campaign. That explains some of the reasons for this meeting that he said he would have forgotten about about russia and building trump tower had it not been for the way the media went crazy over it. He was asked a key question, why not say russia, we dont need your help, we dont court your help. And Rudy Guiliani in some ways answered that question a few days ago. Your take on this rare interview with Jared Kushner. Yeah, a couple of pieces to this. We have to say it again, it is notable to hear from him in a public setting. Hes talking with a journalist who i see often, brian bennett, who opened up with the questions on the Mueller Report. Remarkably, he believes that the ensuing investigations that stemmed from the russian interference investigation were more harmful to the country than the initial russian interference himself which he described as a few took ads. That is not an accurate assessment or understanding of what the scope and depth of russian interference in our election was based on people inside trumps own administration. Intelligence leaders, government officials who point to a broad sustained campaign by moscow to interfere in this election. In fact, he tried to sort of just dismiss it by saying i spent that much every few hours during the campaign on facebook. Its a misunderstanding of what russia did in 2016, chris. And it is i think going to raise some questions about how prepared this administration is for the continued russian interference Campaign Come 2020. You talked about his response to why didnt the campaign say, hey, russia, stop. We dont want your help, go awa away. Kushner used the argument weve heard from campaign transition and Administration Officials all along, which was, hey, we didnt know what we were doing. We were new to the political scene. We were sort of in this chaotic time. We didnt have any idea. Its the pleading of political nai naivety. Its really a remarkable discussion from kushner there on stage. Theres a consistency, being dismissive. Jonathan, a consistency when he was asked about the white house clearance. Look what i have done. I have divested and done so much ignoring the fact that the president had to force them to give him a security clearance over the objections of intelligence officials, the white houses top lawyer there, and over the then chief of staff, general kelly. Acting as though this is just something that happens because he was such a successful businessman. Right. What we just witnessed was this is an administration built on selfinterest of the president , clearly selfinterest of Jared Kushner, the president s soninlaw and also the Senior Advisor to the president. The fact that he chalked up an attack on this country as a few facebook ads. I think is willful ignorance of what happened in the 2016 campaign and what will probably happen again in 2020. We havent heard anything from this administration about what its doing to combat this attack on our countrys democracy and our electoral system. I want to bring up one other thing. His answer in response to the khashoggi murder, mr. Khashoggi was a contributing opinion writer at the Washington Post in our Global Opinion section. His murder in the consulate in turkey was not only an attack, a brutal murder, but it was also an attack on freedom of the press. Mr. Khashoggi was criticizing the saudi regime. He was asking them for transparency. Asking them for freedom of all sorts of things for the society, holding the regime to account. And for that, he was murdered. And instead, when the reporter asked him when you talked to him, what did you bring up . Four things Jared Kushner brought up, not one of them was freedom of the press. Not one of them was about human rights. Nothing about you know, the United States is built on a lot of freedoms. One of them being freedom of the press. He didnt bring that up. We used tod rely on the America President to stand by that fundamental freedom that has been the bedrock of our democracy, but the bedrock of democracy around the world. The fact that Jared Kushner could not even bring that up, sitting across from someone that our intelligence agencies tells us murdered a resident of the United States, is shocking. The best he could say is i dont want to disagree with our intelligence agencies. In his tweet storm this morning, the president tweeting at least a dozen times already today. It included several attacks on the press, except for fox and friends. Your take on what you heard from Jared Kushner . Pure trump. It was pure trump. The soninlaw has learned well at the knee of donald trump how to answer these questions and how to position the administrations views and perspectives on this. To do the one off comment about the russian interference or as we all know, attack on our electoral system, was just typical trump. I mean, and so i was not surprised in hearing jared say what he said. I wasnt surprised to hear him say it the way he said it. Because there is this consistent view that either, a, oh, we were so young and fresh and just had no idea what was going on to the hard nosed, well, you know, we did the things that we thought were appropriate and proper. Everyone attacked us and we were the campaign that was outside of the traditional political system. Theyll swing that bat whichever way will give them the home run they want. Jared did that and thats what hes been doing in the conversation. To the point made by khashoggi, absolutely. What did you say to nbs . I told him to be as transparent as possible. Okay, yeah, we all believe that. Its just more pabulum to feed the trump beast. Hell go back and get a pat on the head and theyll move on as if Nothing Happened. Its interesting to note theres a new poll out. Its a poll thats usually fairly favorable to the president. It shows him tied for his all time low approval rating. Take a look at this. You could argue this is disastrous. 39 . The only other time his rating with this poll was that low was after charlottesville. His disapproval number up six points to 57 . You wonder this is post mueller. This is post mueller. You had a situation where the president went out, he truly believed that his no collusion, no collusion mantra had indeed been verified by this report. Looks like the American People arent buying it. In the couple polls weve seen so far the American People arent buying it. I want to see what the polls are as we continue down the road of investigations on capitol hill, where more information will come out. As we read in the Mueller Report, there were a total of 14 investigations farmed out from Robert Mueller to jurisdictions around the country. Most notably here in new york, the Southern District of new york. They could come out with indictments or things that will upend everything. Whatever we might find from these congressional investigations, leave ahead the whole question of impeachment or not impeachment. Congress has an oversight role and they would be remiss if they didnt go after and look into everything they possibly can that stems out of this Mueller Report but other things that have come out as well. I want to thank all of you, hallie jackson, jonathan capehart, michael steele. We dont have to wait for your newspaper, its a great Fact Checking job. We just did it on Jared Kushner and the key things he talked about which is russian interference and the murder of jamal khashoggi. Hell be facing pinnochios coming up. Still to come, senator Kamala Harris speaking to voters in New Hampshire right now. We have road warriors covering the trail.
