Migrants. What we are learning and not learning about those plans. And conflicting messages amid what the pentagon calls an escalating threat. There are plans to send more troops to the middle east, but what the president just said in an interview about that situation thats a bit confusing. Well dig into that in just a moment. But we start in orlando, florida, where the president will be making it official tonight. Hes promising a, quote, wild 2020 campaign launch. Some of his loyalists as you see there are already lining up waiting for a chance to fill that 20,000person arena. Some camping out at what they are calling 45 fest. The president actually dialed for reelection on the day of his reelection, but did his First Campaign ever really end . This comes at a time when mr. Trump is hurting in some polls. At least five of the Democratic Candidates would beat the president in a general election, and thats according to a fox news poll, a new one. Meanwhile, internal Trump Campaign poll. Some of that polling showing much of the same results. We get details now from nbc Peter Alexander in orlando. Road warrior montha ka monica alba. Well start with you. This is what he tweeted this morning, quote, the fake news doesnt report it but republican enthusiasm is at an alltime high. Look whats going on in orlando right now. People have never seen anything like it, unless you play a guitar. Going to be wild, the president s words. What can we expect to see and hear from the president tonight, peter . Reporter well, craig, when you talk about the crowds out here, the president talks about the enthusiasm, well show you what that looks like right here at that 45 fest. There are now thousands of people waiting out in the hot sun. The heat index already 95 degrees here in o lando and theyre not going in for several more hours with thunderstorms on the way here. But the president when they get inside will be serving up a lot of that red meat that a lot of these people are here to see again today. He said in a recent interview that hes focused on security, safety, and more broadly on issues like trade. Obviously that could be a doubleedge sword for the president. Theres been real concerns that the trade war could have an impact on a booming economy. But specifically on security, the president on the eve of this big rally where hell be joined on stage by the Vice President mike pence as well as his first lady melania trump, the president did tee up that i. C. E. Next week would be leading these massive immigration aclefrrests which appear to be talk of roundups that have been talked about for months of migrants and children. He has warned about it several times in the past will he follow through this time . At the remains to be seen. And we heard the president try to shut down democrats on the key talking point. Healthcare, say hes going to be rolling out a new plan in the next month or two, i plan that he says will cost less and cover more. But of course, craig, so far no specifics and that is also potentially risky strategy for the president. You remember the republicans when they controlled both chambers of Congress Still repeatedly tried to get rid of obamacare, didnt happen. Its obviously something the democrats would have an opportunity to sort of pick up on to pick apart if he rolls out any real plan. Well wait to see what the president does tonight. Peter, what, if anything, is the president or his people, what are they saying about some of these poll numbers . Reporter well, i think, you know, the president obviously sort of relates ratings and energy with poll numbers. So the president , as you heard, say that all these polls are not real, they dont exist. Even one of his Campaign Officials acknowledged that the poll numbers were real but she said they were old old and worst case scenario. That they were before the Mueller Report was released. When the president sees pictures like this, he sees those thousands of people outside, thats what he views as the ultimate poll. The former guy from the apprentice where he kept a close eye on his ratings and would often send notes to the members of the media saying were number one. When he sees number like this, that is what he feels good about. To be clear, the president said there will be 25,000 people in this capacity arena. The ny center seats 20,000. But its still going to be a big crowd. Home of the orlando magic, hes hoping to deliver more of that magic tonight. All right, peter, thank you. Monica alba, i turn to you now. As we pointed off here off the top, a lot of those folks behind you have been lining up, im told, for days. These are obviously some of the president s hardest core supporters. What are they telling you . What are you seeing . Reporter hey there, craig. Thats right. Weve talked to some supporters who were here since late last night, as peter mentioned, with the threat of thunderstorms and extreme heat not getting in their way. As we talk to people theres a lot of people here from critical battleground florida, but weve talked to folks from other areas. I want to introduce you here to a trump supporter pat minor who was here for hours. Pat, what brought you out here today . Why are you here . Im here because i love my president. Reporter what are you expecting to hear from him tonight . Im just hoping great things. We dont ask the questions. We dont answer questions. Reporter what are you expecting to hear tonight . Im hoping that he he im sorry to say i cant hear myself. Reporter go ahead, its okay. Fake news. Im hoping that he fake news. Gets the american vote out there. I want him to win the 2020. Reporter what are the main issues that resonate with you that he speaks about . Definitely the wall. Immigration. And thats thats the two main things. Security of the United States of america. Reporter two examples of what sirps here are hearing. As you can tell from the crowd there are say crowd that much like the president tends to attack the media. But thats par for the course in these rallies. Tonight will be a special one and as peter said, we still have eight hours to go, craig. Monica alba, always a professional, monica. Thank you. Peter, thanks again, sir. Let me bring in ashley parker, White House Reporter for the washington post. She is also an msnbc senior political analysts. Jim messina, Campaign Manager for president obamas 2020 election campaign, now ceo of the messina group. And political consultant Michael Singleton who worked on the president campaigns of mitt romney, Newt Gingrich and ben carson as well. Thank you all for your time. Ashley, ill start with you. You have been following President Trump since that 2016 campaign i want to share for our viewers and listeners on sirius satellite radio, just a portion of your latest story. If trumps 2015 launch was haphazard and unconventional, his 2020 launch tuesday promises to be far more streamlined than professional if still something of a spectacle. We quite frankly got a glimpse of that spectacle a few minutes ago. Trump is trump. But what are some of the things that will be different this time around . So trump is still trump, but one thing that is different is that in twist almo2015 almost f ago when he launched he did it with four months of planning a rag tag team with half a dozen people, some of whom who didnt believe he was serious about running for president. He never worked in politics before. And this time tonight marks his official launch of his reelect. But he has been running or the reelection has been up and running basically since he took office at the very beginning of 2017. This is a major operation that has, you know, a huge headquarters in roselyn, virginia, gleaming with beautiful views of the potomac river. Compare that to the makeshift office in trump towers. This is an operation that has 80 fulltime paid staffers. They hope to have 2 million volunteers by election day. They have 13 Regional Directors out into the states. This is aprn operation thats going and wooing donors and theyre having some success. Again, it cant be overstated. Trump is still trump. He is the one who is speaking tonight. He is the one who may depart from the teleprompter tonight, but theres a real operation in place around him that looks a lot more like a president ial campaign. And, ashley, to be clear, the president has raised a boatload of money. Yeah. He sure has. And thats one of the things is that people who donors who were very skeptical of him the first time for a number of reasons, i was just talking to someone who was in touch with a lot of donors before i came on this show, a lot of them have just come over to him. Part of it is they say theyre worried about the democratic alternative. Lets say an Elizabeth Warren or Bernie Sanders they worry could mean for the country. Part of them are willing to look at the things they do like about the president s time in office. The economy or deregulation or the tax cut. And or, even frankly, his record on judicial nominees which is a good conservative record that any republican president would be proud of. And point at that and overlook his tone, his behavior, his comments, his tweets. A number ever reasons people who were not supportive of him the first time or did so begrudgingly have come full circle on board and are doing that with their pocketbooks. Jim, i want to go back to that scene we just that you have in orlando. Folks lining up for what the president s hard core supporters have dubbed 45 fest. Is there a democrat in the field right now that can complete with these trumpstyle rallies . Thats the first part of the question. And what do we know about the correlation between these rallies and actual votes . Well, your second question is the right question, craig, right . This is the challenge of the Trump Campaign. Its the challenge of the discipline were about to see, whether he can stick to a message. Because he loves these rallies, right . The only part of being president hes actually any good at is the campaigning part. And so hes going to want to tonight do all the red meat stuff that the woman you interviewed desperately wants to hear. The problem is thats not what swing voters are especially in these battleground states in the midwest want to hear. They want him to be very specific about the economy, and healthcare. And unlike four years ago when he had no record, now hes got this record of all these broken promises, things he promised to do that hes going to have to not talk about. And, you know, rye to go back to these red meat issues. It is going to be his challenge through the entire campaign. He wants to talk to the base and the swing voters want to hear something very, very different. And thats going to be Donald Trumps challenge for the next year. Jim, i want to play a portion of George Stephanopouloss interview with the president and i want to talk about something on the other side. Heres part of what the president had to say. Whats your pitch to the swing voter on the fence . Safety, security, great economy, frankly i think were going to do tremendously now with african americans, with asians, with hispanics because have the lowest unemployment numbers theyve had in the history of the country. Thats the pitch . I have no pitch. You know what i have in the economy is phenomenal. Weve rebuilt our military, taking care of our vets. Were doing the best job everybodys done as a first term president. Think ive done more than any other first term president ever. If the president manages to stay focus dollaed and disciplid talks about the economy, how do democrats counter that message, jim . By talking about the actual economic record in these states, right . The problem with swing voters have an average of 2. 5 jobs. Theyre not seeing this economy in a much better place than it was. I understand bah ram obama day bunch of things to create this economy. They want donald trump to stay focused on making their lives better. And instead, hes pass a tax bill that makes their taxes higher. He tried to pass a healthcare bill that got rid of preexisting conditions. He has failed promises all over the place. And i hope he does stay focused on the red meat stuff tonight. Because a whole bunch of swing voters are going to look at him and say what do you mean the world is great . My life isnt any better than when you came into office and i want you to stay focused on it. Michael, i know that youve spent some time there in florida talking to voters, talking about the things that they say really matter to them. Whats your sense of the relationship that this president and voters are going to have to have over the next year or so . Well, i think, craig, the most important voting block in florida right now is the hispanic vote. The state of florida is very critical for the Trump Campaign. The last republican to win the white house without florida was Calvin Coolidge in 1924. A and that was before florida was a populous state and before florida was arguably the most critical battleground state. But i think its interesting that the president is doing this in Central Florida. I was just in Central Florida talking with a lot of puerto rican activists in the state where theres 1. 3 million of them. They represent a third of the hispanic vote in that state. And as we saw in the 2018 elections, those elections were very, very close. I would argue theyre going to probably be closer next year if democrats can create the right voter turnout strategy, particularly with his panics. I think what the president is going to struggle with arguably is try to figure out how do you talk to each of those, i guess, diverse communities, if you will, within the Hispanic Community because theyre not all the same. While cuban americans, venezuelan americans may be reliable voters for republicans, some of the Younger Voters within those communities are not. When you look at the puerto rican vote dagain, how presiden trump responded to hurricane maria, a lot of those voters are turned off by the president. I think the Trump Administration will have a lot of hard work opt political side of trying to turn out key constituents beyond white voters because i dont think that will be enough for the president to win that state. Something that strikes me, we dont have a lot of time, but we see the polling that shows the president is behind to a number of the other Democratic Candidates. How reliable do we think that these polls are in terms of their ability to capture the president s support . We know based on the last election that there are a lot of folks out there who when asked by a pollster wont say theyre voting for President Trump but when theyre in the ballot box theyre voting for President Trump. Do we think thats changed this time around . I think so. Remember, donald trump is not running against Hillary Clinton who was incredibly unpopular. What we saw in 2018 with women class voters, minority voters, we saw something that was unprecedented when in comparison to 2016. I think thats something that has to concern the Trump Campaign going into 2020. And i think if democrats select the right nominee who can excite those groups and turn those folks out, i dont think donald trump can win this thing next year. All right. Well have to leave it there. Jim, well start there next time, jim messina. Jim, is her michael, big thanks to all of you. In case you havent heard, eight days from now the Democratic Candidates, at least 20 of them will be taking the stage in miami for the first democratic debate. You can see it on nbc, msnbc, telemundo and well also treem it stream it on msnbcnews. Com. And the president is taking his hardest stance yet on immigration via twitter, plans for mass arrests, deportations of, quote, millions of undocumented migrants starting next week. What more do we know about the deployment of these troops . What more do we know about precisely what these troops are going to be doing . Reporter so so far, craig, what weve heard is these troops are going to be defensive in nature. It sounds as if theyre going to be more support as infantry troops that we might think of. Think of what the threat is here that the u. S. Military says theyre responding to and what they might immediate do. The threat sfrt air, land, and sea. From the air its threats from drones and from missiles, primarily houthi missiles flying in saudi arabia. At sea its threats from comme
