For the second day in a row, the
United States
set another record for new cases in a single day. By our tally here at nbc news, there were close to 55,000 new cases thursday alone. Right now, there are more than 2. 76 million cases in our country and so far weve lost close to 130,000 americans. During this pandemic,
President Trump
will be heading to mt. Rushmore tonight for a fireworks display. His
Surgeon General
told me a few hours ago that people need to wear mask these
Holiday Weekend
. They will not be required at mt. Rushmore. In california, some local leaders not just asking people to wear masks, in santa monica, if you dont, youll face a 100 fine. Meanwhile, florida, florida crossing a new milestone. 10,000 cases recorded in a single day. That number matches the highs that new york saw at the peak of its crisis in april. Nbcs
Kerry Sanders
is in lauderdale by the sea in florida. Kerry, beaches across that state closed, but not all of them. How is this state balancing the reality of people celebrating this
Holiday Weekend
and the effort the contain the virus there . Craig, its a confusing patchwork around the state. So that is really what makes it difficult. Of course, florida is a giant state, so if youre jacksonville or south florida, it can feel like different states. Where i am now, were on the pier here at lauderdale by the sea. Can he came here to show you an elevated position to look out at the beach. So the beaches here in broward county, so the north at palm beach, to the south in miami, those beaches are closed. That is putting a big dent, of course, in businesses. Miami beach estimates even before fourth of july that this shutdown that everybody hab going through has been costing 3. 5 million a day. So it is an economic impact. But the reason the officials are doing this is to stop the spread of the coronavirus. As you point out, this has has had to the with how people have been back and forth on whether theyre going to wear masks or not. A lot of the complaints have been that the
Younger Generation
has been feeling somewhat invisible. But weve found that message is now beginning to arrive. Listen to what this 21yearold young woman told me about her plans this fourth of july weekend. You stay at home with your family and youre. Ful and youre responsible. And youre fine with that . Yes. Its so important. Its so important to stay home right now. So you can go out later and so that people stop buying. Do you think your friends get that . No, i dont. I really dont. And im really disappointed. So the question is whether people will respect the rules that have been established and as you look at the empty beach behind me on the west coast of florida over in pinelles county in clear water, the beach is open as if its any other day at the beach. And the
Health Officials
say the impacts that we will see, which is whether coronavirus is an issue as people get together this fourth of july weekend, ignore the social distancing rules, gather in place wres its maybe just a little bit too close, the impacts we see about begin showing up about two weeks from now. Thats why as
Jackson Memorial
hospital theyve hired an additional 80 nurses, all in anticipation of what they believe will be an arrival of new patients over that lag period of about two weeks. Among those who have been impacted by this, the youngest victim now in the state of florida, an 11yearold boy who passed away from complications related to coronavirus. So while everybody wanted to initially think this was only impacting older people, craig, we now see over and over again that this impacts everybody in the population. Ye yeah, it does, indeed. Kerry sanders, lauderdale by the sea, thank you. In arizona, the governor slowed down the states reopening after record breaking numbers of new covid cases earlier this week. Thursday, the daily new cases dipped a bit to just over 3,000. The states total number of cases, though, near roughly 90,000. Msnbcs

How to stay on and stay open and operating. This is the varsity tavern. Weve reached out to varsity taveng for comment. I want to bring in another person sworn in last night, the vice mayor randy. Despite varsity tavern, i think its important to remember that the vast majority of tempe businesses are comply, cdc guidelines and making a good faith effort to enforce social distancing and make sure the pandemic doesnt get any more out of hand than it has. I know that is difficult. Sth is a

and as much as we can do to help these businesses, make sure youre complying with the cdc guidelines and ultimately well get through this. We were talking before we went on live here. The only authority you have in the local government is to require people to wear face masks. You cant do much else beyond that. What is your message as we see the pandemic sweep through the state to the
Governors Office
. We need the governor to lead here. This isnt something a hodgepodge of cities can take on their own. Weve tried this before. Half token measurements arent going to get us where we need to be. If the government doesnt want to enforce executive orders, he needs to give the cities the authority to do so. The valley is 40 municipals that have grown together and not everyone is going along with it. Without a centralized effort without the state leadership, its not going folth any better. So we need the governor to step up here. I understand that he must be under immense political appreciate from the white house. I get that. But arizona now sadly is the epicenter of a

. Vice mayor randy keating, good luck with your city here. The other issue here that continues to plague the state, testing remains an issue in the turnaround time. It was a week ago now today that i got my own covid test and here today, this friday, july 3rd, i still dont have the results here myself, craig. All right. Vaughn, hang around for us, if you can for just a moment. This morning, the
Surgeon General
vice admiral jerome adams is speaking out as we head into the weekend. And dr. One of the chief criticisms of the administration so far has been this mixed messaging and as it relates to that mask that you just held up. This morning and earlier this week you were practically pleading with people to wear masks in public. But this is what you said back in early march, a reminder. One of the things they shouldnt be doing, the general public, is going out and buying masks. It does not help. Thats three months ago. What prompted the change of heart . Its important for people to understand that we now know 40 to 50 of cases of coronavirus are spread asymptomatically. Thats different than any other coronavirus weve experienced before, which means you could have we could have no symptoms, no cough, no fever, and still be someone who is spreading the disease. Why not require people who are going to be at mt. Rushmore to wear those masks if we know that wearing them literally saves lives . Thats a great question and we will support governors and local officials with their decision making. Their know their people best. While im not against anyone who has a mandate, i think the most important thing from a

United States saw yet another record broken on yesterday. Another single day of covid19 cases, single day high. More than 54,000 new cases reported in the last 24 1,000 s since the previous day. A lot of you have been asking questions about how to stay safe over the
Holiday Weekend and weve been trying to answer your questions about the covid19 pandemic this week. Today we invited two medical experts on to the show to answer some of those questions ahead of the fourth of july. Dr. Natalie azar is with us and so is dr. Kavita patel, former obama would you say medical director. First up, betty this is not from my mother, this is a different betty would says she has seen her family over the weekend. I am traveling for fourth of july to visit family. Both families have been selfquarantining ourselves for the past week while there, should both families wear masks inside for the entire time . I love the fact that you guys did quarantine and youre asking about indoors versus outdoors. All distincts are important. The average is around 5 or 6 so youre probably doing okay on that end. If you have vul 234er knowledge people, i might be too late for that. But good questions. Weve gotten quite a few questions. This one is from matt. Matt is asking, my family is plan ago road trip from minneapolis to montana where the family cabin is. All right. So first of all, its a great plan to try to contact the hotel in advance, craig, and many hotels are trying to standard
United States cleaning procedures, ask about those and you probably dont need to bring your own bedding. Its more important to bring things like wipes or be able to cleanly quickly watch your hands and those surfaces. And the highest risk at any hotel or any place is really other people and common surfaces. So just be aware of that. The best advice for anyone listening, is if you have people who are not wearing masks, including the staff, and you dont feel like theyre keeping up with the cleaning policies they stated, then thats a pretty good reason to walk out the door and try to find either some place else or think about continuing your drive without stopping over. Our next question is from a viewer who is trying to decide whether he should selfquarantine over the weekend. This is john. I think i know the answer to this one, dr. Patel, but were going to put the question out there. Im a 75yearold with diabetes. Ive been invited to a family fish fry on the fourth with five adults over 50, three young adults in their 20s. I do not know if others have been social distancing. Would it be wise to attend this get together . So the cdc has a nice breakdown of what the risks are for different gatherings. This one is probably what we would put into the classification of higher risk and its for several reasons. Number one, already someone with vulnerable chronic condition and an age group that makes you vulnerable. Number two, it doesnt sound like they know the social distances or other patterns of the people attending. So this would by one of those places that i would, for my own family who fits into this category, recommend that they consider avoiding or consider alternatives such as asking those other members in advance some of those detailed questions about their habits and getting a better handle on the risk. And this just highlights, craig, there is nothing we can do that has zero risk. Dr. Natalie, weve got a question from andrea here who is wondering about how to interact with her neighbors. Andrea asking do people who have tested positive for the antibodies, do those people need to wear a mask in public because they took an absent body tefk a test and they came back positive. What we were hoping was people who tested positive or had the infection would, in fact, be immune. And the short answer is we still have a lot of questions around that. We dont know if somebody has a positive
Antibody Test whether or not they truly are immune and if they are, how strong or how durable that immunity is. The recommendation right now is not to rely a positive ant boat test as sort of a freedom passport in your community. So the answer is yes, you should still wear mask when in public when you cannot maintain that six foot distance in spite of a positive
Antibody Test. All right. Dr. Natalie, dr. Cavido, do stick around. Im so proud of our viewers and listeners on sirius satellite radio. Theyve been asking some really smart questions. Were also going to bring back
Vaughn Hilliard, nbcs
Vaughn Hilliard. Hes been in arizona for weeks now. And hes heard one question come up time and time again. So vaughn is going to pose that question to our experts. First, though, an er doctor spreading his concerns over the july fourth holiday. The biggest concern that i have is were going to see more patients. Were going to see more people that have been exposed. Were going to see more of the patients who both need treatment and are concerned enough that they think they need to at least be seen and evaluated. That could tax the medical system. Edical system you get used to pet odors in your car. You think it smells fine, but your passengers smell this. Eliminate odors youve gone noseblind to for up to 30 days with the febreze car vent clip. Wow, it smells good in here. So you and your passengers can breathe happy. I want to bring back dr. Natalie and joining the conversation is
Vaughn Hilliard. He is in tempe, arizona. Vaughn has been covering the recent spike in cases for us in that state. Vaughn, what is the number one question youve been getting there . What is the question and well pose it to our experts. I think for dr. Azar, particularly for older viewers who have been adhering to this stay at home guidance, for the last four months now, theyre growing frustrated as they watch these numbers rise, watching from the sidelines. The question is what if the governor here were to make a more direct action say essentially stop, halt all indoor surfaces again, put in another stayathome order, make the public pitch, three weeks. If you could get a public buyin for three weeks, to what extent could that stop the spread here in a place like arizona . I think its a matter of what is theoretical and whats realistically going to happen. Sure, if you had a lockdown where every
Single Person in the community stayed at home for three weeks, the virus would have nowhere to go. And, again, it could theoretically burn out. But we know that is not going to happen. Think about it, the lockdown is the severest form, for example, of a social distancing and mask wearing. Really try to enforce that rather than the, you know, extreme of a lockdown. But, look, they could certain do it. I think two to three weeks is a lot less hardship than two or three months. I dont think realistically its a strategy that would be very enduring. Vaughn hilliard for us there in arizona. Vaughn, thanks for that question. Thanks for your work out there. Enjoy your weekend if i can. Our next question is from barbara. Barbara is in long beach, california. She asked its a good question. Weve gotten this question a lot, as well. Rising cases are disastrous, but one encouraging sign is deaths are way down. Dr. Patel, what explains that . Yeah. Barbaras question is a great one because that is a trend were seeing not just in her state, but all across the country. A couple of things. Number one, we are seeing the greater degree of cases in younger population, which is not necessarily translating to as many hospitalizations which in turn is not resulting in as many deaths. But at the same time, craig, were getting very good at taking care of patients in the hospital. Just a quick statistic, about thee months ago, it was a one in five chance that you would go into an icu with covid and come out alive. And now its much better. We flipped that so that its really the majority of patients coming into hospitals and icus being discharged. So its a little bit of both. But i do hope people realize that just because that death rate seems lower, it is still dramatically higher than influenza or many of the other viruses that weve seen, which means its still incredibly serious. 130,000 americans so far. Our next question is about the new normal. Dr. Natalie, this question is from rowan langbalm. I find the constant disinfecting of groceries and takeout food exhausting and increases my stress level. Is there any new guidance on groceries and takeout food . I realize the majority of transmission is person to person. Dr. Azar, what say you to that . Rowan, i would say your last part of that question is really the money. Because youre acknowledging that you are aware that respiratory transmission is the main mode of transmission. So what i do is i concentrate my efforts there and that is with social distancing and mask wearing and hand hygiene. And no, there hasnt been new guidance on this particular question, the grocery question. I think in addition to if youre in that high risk category, you do wipe things down if you can. But i think more important than that, washing your hands after handling groceries, before you eat, keeping the counters, the kitchen counters sanitized and clean. I think youll go a long way with that as opposed to getting completely crazy about disinfecting your product. I think thats exhausting at this point. Dr. Natalie, during the course of that excellent answer, a friend decided to come and join you behind you there. Who is that adorable pooch . Oh, he did . I didnt even see him. Yeah. Who is that . There is no what is his name . Hes famous. You dont know him . What is his name . Rocky. Hello, rocky. Yeah, hes a mamas boy and hes a little bit of a diva and he cant be without me. He heard you talk about him. I love it. Rocky, rocky thank you, as well, thank you, cart natalie and dr. Patel, a big thanks to you, as well. Thank you, thank you. By the way, were going to continue to do this. You send us questions, were going to try and answer those questions for us on the air. Theres the msnbc answers. You can send this in the email, talk msnbc. Com. It is day one of major league aspirin training 2. 0. Its kicking off a season unlike any other in the seasons history. Corporate Partners and fans, football in washington, d. C. Might soon look a little different. In a brandnew statement just out, washington, d. C. s nfl franchise says it will undergo a thorough review of the teams name, and that review formalizes the discussion the team has been having with the league in recent weeks. This comes after fedex, the sponsor of the stadium, that the franchise change the team name as well as the brand nike, nike removing any sign of the team from its website by removing it from its nfl gear dropdown selection. Its been six weeks since the death of george floyd and the protests that swept our streets may not be massive like they were, but theyre not gone. And sometimes the loudest voices are not from protesters supporting black lives matter. Nbcs alison barber has this snapshot from branson, missouri. Reporter 76 country boulevard in branson, missouri is usually filled with tourists headed for the towns popular
Country Music shows. But taking the stage instead, a reckoning on racism. Go back to africa reporter and as in big cities and small towns across the country, the debate is visceral. What do you represent . What do you represent . Freedom of speech. Reporter and so is the pushback. Youre such a victim. Using your skin color again. Reporter branson in the heart of the ozarks promotes itself as a familyfriendly destination but the predominantly white town is also home to dixie outfitters, a store selling confederate merchandise whose owners have past ties to the ku klux klan. Shut them down reporter bransons black population is small. But since the death of george floyd, protesters from around the ozarks have turned out for several black lives matter protests outside the store. Are you surprised by the numbers here . Im not. Because people are getting fed up with it all over the world. Im not surprised by the numbers on our side. Im not surprised by the people on their side because hate is prevalent. Reporter when nbc news asked the owner of dixie outfitters about the ties to the kkk, he had no comment. His wife previously said it was years ago and that they were not members. Their supporters say the store should stay. Branson teenager katarina mcgooch helped organize the protest. Reporter this is not a place people would expect people to be supporting black lives matter. I feel like im comfortable speaking out because this is an issue that is perpetuated because of my communitys silence. Thats my responsibility to fix. Reporter still, some here question why there should be black lives matter protests at all. Why theyre here in branson, i dont know. This is a family town, a tourist town. Theres no racism in this town at all. Reporter does it bother you that the owners of these stores have ties to the kkk . See, now thats what ive heard, thats the second time ive heard that. Its really none of my business. Reporter for now dixie outfitters is still open and in branson whats your problem . Reporter the showdown over race is far from an over. Alison barber, nbc news. Wow. Zerlina maxwell is back with me, thankfully, director of progressive programming at sear sirius xm radio. Full disclosure, ive never been to branson, missouri. That was surprising on a number of levels. Or maybe i shouldnt be surprised, zerlina, i dont know. I think the pandemic has created a situation where you have family members quarantined intergenerationly. You have generation z educating each other on social media platforms. This is a cultural reckoning that obviously is not only located in our major cities. Its all across the nation, its all across the world. And some of those images actually remind me of previous images weve seen throughout american history, during the height of the
Civil Rights Movement in the 60s and also throughout the 70s, where black children were showing up at school, and there were angry mobs. So this is a part of the through line of history where america is reckoning with its history of
White Supremacy and eigits interesting to see people with trump shirts say theres no racism here. Yeah, im sorry, im not accepting that any longer. In this particular moment, there is enough evidence that you can point to to show that donald trump and his policies are harming people of color. If thats not racism, i dont know what it is. Zerlina maxwell, we have to leave it there. And oh, by the way, again, she has a book out next week. It would be the book featured prominently behind her. Zerlina, thank you, have a great
