MSNBCW MSNBC Live With David Gura September 2, 2018

Friend and Naval Academy classmate chuck larson. The ceremony is the conclusion to an extraordinary week of mourning and celebration, including eulogies from two former president s at the National Cathedral yesterday. Perhaps just as notable, the fact that the sitting president was not in attendance at mccains request. It may have been a thinly veiled shot from Meghan Mccain that caught President Trumps attention. America does not boast because she has no need to. The america of john mccain has no need to be made great again because america was always great. [ applause ] among a flurry of tweets sent out by the president during the Mccain Service was this one shortly after Meghan Mccains eulogy. It reads in all caps, make America Great again. Lets go to annapolis. Hans nichols is there. And we were seeing some pictures earlier, hans, of the motorcade making its way to your location there. And really a capstone here, isnt it, that this is a military man, this is a veteran who went through an experience that shaped his entire life all the way to the end. Reporter richard, in john mccains words, he is coming back to where it all began. This is annapolis, an academy, a place he resented, at times reject the, but it gave him the mental fortitude for a lifetime of service, but also his years in captivity. You know, when he was here he was a rebel. His nickname was john wayne mccain. He was fast to a party, first to a fight, known for poker playing skills. It was that discipline, it was that since of country and honor that was really formed here. Now, behind me you are seeing here a lot of wellwishers. These people, some will be going inside. Most of them just want to get a glimpse of the man. The man that so meant so much to this community and to the entire naval family throughout the town. There are flags draped throughout. You really get a sense that this was a place that john mccain thought of as one of his homes. Its where he ultimately wanted to come back to. Now, Meghan Mccain, as you mentioned, she was vo sifrerous in that funeral, giving that public eulogy. But Lindsey Graham, who will be speaking here, part of the eulogyists here today, he was asked about Meghan Mccains comments. Here is how he responded. If you Say Something bad about meghans father, you will know it. She didnt like it. So its okay. She is grieving. You think there is a lesson for President Trump . There is a lesson here for everybody, including President Trump. Everybody makes mistakes. Those who admit it are seen by the public as bigger, not smaller. Know what you are talking about, fight hard, forgive. Reporter now, among the pallbearers for the former senator from arizona, you have jim mattis, sons, grandsons, you have classmates, youll have fellow navy aviators. For john mccain, class of 58, he is coming home. Hans nichols, thank you so much. There in annapolis where the service, we believe, is ongoing t at this hour as he is laid to rest there. Thank you so much. Joining us now with reflections on the life of senator mccain and the Memorial Services held in his honor, jeff bennett and retired fourstar general, barry mccaffrey. Jeff, when we were talking yesterday we were reflecting on the words being said during the services for john mccain. And how potentially there was a new unity being put together. Reflect on the messages that came from yesterday and what that means for today as we are at the final day of remembrances of senator john mccain. Yeah, richard. Senator mccain is finally laid to rest. I think its becoming clear to all of us that he leaves a void in our politics that has not and likely will not be filled. I think its worth noting that at the services both on friday at the Capitol Rotunda and yesterday at the National Cathedral you had on hand there congressional leaders from both parties. There were a handful of representatives from the administration who all heard this repeated call from a number of people who, in their own way, each called on us to be better in our politics. To really cling to decency and duty, even when we have political disagreements. And the question that we come to now is, is what happens next . Will to make a difference . I am no cynic, but i would suggest maybe it wont in part because of the things that incentivize politicians to be partisan, those things have not changed yet. I think we might get a first glimpse of the dynamic when we have the Senate Hearings for the Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh set to kick off on tuesday. At the moment there is all these lingering questions about whether or not anyone who was on hand and heard the repeated calls will internallize that. We know based on the president s tweet he apparently saw Meghan Mccains speech and really snapped back at her. General, we were talking about hans nichols there at annapolis. In our discussion the note of where he began is where he finishes, right, general . There in annapolis. And really the headline here, and there are many to be read here, is that senator john mccain was a military man and, as i said earlier, proud of that history, and he lived it. Well, no question. Im delighted that hans nichols is there. Annapolis, the city, its just beautiful. The Naval Academy is a special place. Its obviously important to the mccain family and, for that matter, to the armed forces to see him go home. And by the way, he is lying in rest next to another officer i dealt with for years, admiral chuck larson, a brilliant man. Conscientious. You know, we noted mccain was the fifth in the bob muellbotto class. Chuck larson was nearly the number one graduate. The two were lifelong friends. Both navel aviator. Of course, mccain got shot down on his 23rd combat mission over North Vietnam and brutalized for more than five years. Look, one comment i think deserves to be made. This past week set aside politics. Set aside policy. Just talk about character. And we have ended up with what almost is a shakespearean epic play of mccain versus trump, even when trumps name wasnt being used. It was almost inescapable. I think it is an important opportunity to learn from mccains lifetime of service and humility and courage. Thats the important aspect, i think, of this whole mccain memorial week. And how they will Work Together Going Forward, those who work so close with senator john mccain. I will go to Meghan Mccain on a her instagram. She is standing in between what is now the two amigos, and what she says, my uncles forever, we love you so much, dad. Of course, thats Joe Lieberman there and Lindsey Graham, two folks that senator john mccain worked so closely together with, jeff, over the years. And that difficulty now of those two moving forward, Lindsey Graham speaking this hour, we believe, there in annapolis. How are the two amigos going to Work Together now, jeff . Its a great question. I think its also worth pointing out that its almost remarkable how people look at images like that and cling to it. There was another image, a cutaway shot yesterday in the Memorial Service where laura bush took a piece of gum or candy from her purse and handed it to former president bush and he handed it to michelle obama. Just that clip of video got retweeted thousands of times because people were just clinging to this open affection between this republican president and this democratic president. It really speaks to what we are missing in our current political climate. So that picture, the interaction yesterday, it certainly is something want to see more of. You know, as we continue to remember john mccain and the services that are ongoing at this hour, the final services, general, you were talking about just a moment ago, you call it shakesperian. Some of us said, you know, this was the final message from senator john mccain yesterday, right . But told through other voices. Voices that he chose. Voices that not are often sitting next to each other. What do you think his final message was that he is trying to get through . Many have said, as i started the segment with, Work Together, collaborate. Yeah. I think so. And look, by the way, im very optimistic about the country. There is nothing wrong with the american people. 85 of the congressmen i have worked with over time are people of integrity and character and principle. I dont think we are in trouble. We are going through a difficult period, but certainly mccains message, im not sure he was a very good politician. He was a magnificent statesman who was a magnificent fighter, a great human being to be engaged with. So at the end of the day mccains lesson is service and character and commitment and a sense of humility, all of which have been sadly lacking, many have argued in the last couple of years. And, jeff, sadly missing, we were looking at some of the pictures from yesterday there in the cathedral. The words used to describe all those at the National Cathedral, elite was part of it. The most powerful. And some might say, well, that is exactly what, during the last election, folks did not want anymore. So on the flip side to a new unity, is it the old unity, and were the messages being given, the idea that some of that could be new, jeff . Its certainly the case. I think if you look at the text of former president bushs and former president obamas speeches, the through line was a call towards a better politics. They got at it in different ways. So did Meghan Mccain. She was more emphatic and a little less oblique. But again one of the things im looking ahead to this coming week is to see it there is any discernible change here at the white house and on the other end of pennsylvania avenue, capitol hill, to see if these people who talk about renaming the Russell Senate Office Building in senator mccains honor, who have spoken so highly of him this past week, if they will take to heart the things he wanted us to hold true. I want to play a little bit of sound from senator dan sullivan, republican from alaska, on meet the press. This on reflection of what happened over this weekend. Lets take a listen. We know there has been tension between them. I would say that the Trump Administration overall was very engaged. You had an important speech that the president , Vice President gave at the ceremony laying in state in the dome. Yesterday, there was a number of folks from the administration kind of glossed over it. Why . He is the president of the united states. It was what im trying chuck, im not trying to gloss over it. This week though has been all about john mccain and the unity of his vision of courage, of patriotism, of freedom, of service before self. And i think thats the lesson that we should take away from the week. So, general, the lesson for the week being that there is unity, but the president was not there, as was mentioned earlier. I did mention as well the tweet that was put out by the president. We did have Jared Kushner and ivanka trump at the ceremony, too. How would you react to senator dan sullivan . He is just trying to put look, i watched general kelly. I have been telling people, kelly is one of the finest men i have met in my entire life i was there. I was wondering what he was thinking the entire time. Actually, i think it was good what do you think he was thinking, general . Well, i think he admired and was as of one in service with a man like mccain. Now he is trying to do the best he can for the country dealing with a president that just in his behavior this week exemplified pettiness and shallowness. I mean, going off golfing right in the middle of the service. I think the week drove President Trump crazy. Its a dreadful situation. And i dont seem nothing as jeff mentioned, i dont think much is going to change in the politics until the midterm elections are over. Maybe then there will be some sanity and pragmatism come back to the congress of the united states. All right. Thank you so much. Retired general barry mccaffrey, jeff bennett there at the white house. Thank you so much as we are talking about senator john mccain and the Ongoing Services in annapolis. I want to bring in msnbc senior politics editor beth fuey. It is a sunday. Yesterdays service at the National Cathedral had many religious elements. Todays service as well. Just looking through the nine or ten items that has just begun there in annapolis, it includes hymns and readings of scripture. And what folks may not know about senator john mccain is he was very faithful to his faith. Why did he not talk about it often . Why are we only being exposed to it this weekend . Yeah. The notoriety that senator mccain had in the heyday of his career, he worshiped at the church of meet the press. He was on public shows probably more. It would go on for hours, right . Exactly. He definitely prioritized that for sunday morning. You know what . That doesnt mean he wasnt faithful. What we have learned through this process, the Church Services that he put together. He personally supervised the planning of that North Phoenix Baptist Church earlier in the week, the National Cathedral yesterday, today over in annapolis. Very religious. And he brought in prayers personal to him, things to that he cared about as a military man. He had pretty protestant hymns. Thats an episcopal bunch. He h church. He had been at a baptist church. Cindy mccain apparently brought him back to faith. He was in the hanoi hilton for five years. How does that not bring you back to faith without hate, without rancor, by appealing to a higher being . One of the readings today that is happening there in annapolis, and we are showing some pictures of him, his body arriving there, is Osama Bin Laden s p psalm 107 23. These see the works of the lord and his wonders in the deep for he commandth and raises the stormy wind which lift up the waves thereof. Again, very much showing the idea of who he is, working through stormy times. That passage alluding to it. The sense of him as a naval officer. Yes, obviously. And the boats, the ships, the finding their way through rough choppy water. Thats him as the mann and military man. One thing about his faith, beth, he did not want to talk about it because he was worried about it being seen as leverage politically. Right. Think about where we have gone with politics over the last many years. The Republican Party has been identified with the evangelical faith, people thinking people more devoutly christian are going to be republicans. That, of course, is probably not the case, thats what we have come to see or believe over time. That is not the case for lots of people. Lots of people are democrats and faithful and republicans perhaps less so. He didnt want to promote this as Something Like look at me, i am a religious guy, im fitting, you know, what you think a president ial candidate of the Republican Party is supposed to be. It was something that sustained him privately, that he cared about, that he embarked upon as a man and as a father and then when it came time when he knew that he was going to probably lose his battle with this terrible cancer he could put together the kind of sendoff that he wanted that involved those religious traditions. He had chosen these hymns, these passages, because he was thinking about this as you are telling us. Beth, you spent time with him . I did. On the campaign trail in 08. This is something you saw face it to face. How did he talk about it . He didnt much, but you could tell that it was part of him. He was a very complex man, as everybody has said for the last several days. He had a very salty mouth, very, very quick to anger, things that you might not automatically associate with about being religious. He had an other side that sort of helped him conquer the everyday issues he was dealing with all the time. Okay. And there we have that picture with you. Where are you . I am to the right with the bright pink vest on. Takes you back. That was election day 2008. Straight talk express back in the day. Yes. Thank you for discussing this, beth, a part of senator john mccain that not many know of, but appropriate on this sunday, especially given Services Ongoing right now. Coming up, its being dubbed the friday night document massacre. President trump refusing to release more than 100,000 pages of Brett Kavanaughs white house record and its raising more questions on the eve of his Supreme Court hearings. Im really into this car, but how do i know if im getting a good deal . I tell truecar my zip and which car i want and truecar shows the range of prices people in my area actually paid for the same car so i know if im getting a great price. This is how car buying was always meant to be. This is truecar. Each of us is different. And each cancer is different. How it reacts, how it evades and adapts. And how we attack it. Thats why at Cancer Treatment centers of america, we use diagnostic tools that help us better understand what drives each persons cancer. This is what we mean by outsmarting cancer.
