Deadly wildfires there. Rescue workers searching for survivors. At least seven people killed, eight others missing. Well have an update on conditions on the ground. A jury is weighing the fate of a Police Officer charged in the deadly shoot of of an unarmed africanamerican man during a routine traffic stop. Pe. Lets start with politics and bring in our team of correspondents. Msnbcs blake mccoy in indianapolis, nbcs Peter Al Alexander in front of trump tower and Kelly Odonnell on capitol hill. Blake, since youre where the action is and is going to be, what do we know about this carrier deal . I understand we have a new statement from the company out within the last few minutes. Reporter thats right. Donald trump on his way here to carrier in indianapolis. Hes set to arrive here at the factory in about an hour where hell be meeting with Union Leaders as well as touring this facility before making remarks on the stage behind me. Heres what we know about the deal to keep this roughly 1,000 jobs in the United States instead of shipping them off to mexico. This is a new statement from carrier saying the state of indiana has offered carrier a 7 million package over multiple years contingent pont factors like employment, Job Retention and capital investment. So, those are state tax incentives from the state of indiana that will be keeping carrier air here. Thats what the company is publicly saying. Our sources are also telling us that another major factor keeping carrier air here is the fact that carrier is owned by united technologies, a much Larger Company that has about 5 billion in federal contracts. There was concern with donald trump now becoming the president elect that those federal contracts could be in jeopardy if carrier air were to move these 1,000 jobs to mexico. That is what were hearing was another major factor as far as keeping these jobs here. Hallie . Blake, hardly needs to be said that Vice President elect mike pence is the governor of indiana. He played a pretty big role in getting this done. Reporter thats right. Were told he was directly involved, actually meeting with the ceo of united technologies. As the governor of indiana, mike pence chairs what is called the Indiana Economic Development corporation. Hes the head of that. That is the state agency that dolls out these tax incentives. Mike pence was crucial to make this happen. I want to bring in Peter Alexander whos at trump tower. Even though the president elect is getting back on the road, he has spent days, weeks really, sort of hold up at what some can white house north, looking for cabinet picks. Tell us who youve seen at those gilded elevators today and this next week . Reporter the gilded elevators, revolving door. Donald trump has left here but a lineup of folks we saw entering the building a short time earlier. Larry king, popular, legendary broadcaster seen in the building a short time ago. Said he was here for a coffee. Unclear if that was with donald trump. Arriving earlier, whisked upstairs by new National Security adviser to president elect trump was former secretary of defense, bob gates. He was a huge critic of trump in the past. Recently with an oped basically saying trump was unfit and unqualified saying, quote, he was beyond repair, but after that visit, which were told took place not with donald trump but just with National Security adviser, general michael flynn. Were told the conversation focused specific on the National Security council and focusing on the structure and operation of that group that the president will oversee but the National Security adviser will play a significant role in. Hallie . Switching to capitol hill now, senator Elizabeth Warren challenged the president elect in a press conference. No surprise. Shes been one of his chief democratic critics since the primaries and general election, really. Tell us what she had to say. This will be the playbook for Elizabeth Warren and other Top Democrats in the weeks and months to come for sure. This coincides with a rule relating to overtime compensation. The department of labor under the Obama Administration had made kind of preparations to allow workers who earn up to almost 48,000 f hourly workers, to be able to receive overtime. It was supposed to go into effect today. But a texas judge put a stop to that and republicans are saying this would have the unintended consequence of incentivizing employers to not offer the hours so those workers wouldnt benefit anyway. A give and take over what is best for middle class workers. Thats what we heard the campaign so much. Heres Elizabeth Warren a short time ago joined by other democrats going right after donald trump on this. If donald trump cares about working people, he has the chance today, december 1st, to show it. All he has to do is speak out. Hes a man who speaks his mind. Let him speak out on the overtime rule. Reporter and that issue, of course, gets to the heart of what is best for American Workers and democrats have a different view of how that should work than republicans do. So, will donald trump weigh in on Something Like this . Theres no indication hes going to do anything about this immediately, specifically. Weve got to watch the twitter feed, as you know so well, when it comes to warren and trump. Thats often where they make their points. Kelly, while youre on capitol hill, talk to me about Democratic Caucus javier becerra, announcing hell be leaving congress to head back to california to serve as attorney general. We talk about the democrats and their leadership struggles and the potential disarray inside the party. To you, is this another example of that . Reporter it is. This is another case of elections have consequences. So, the current attorney general for california is becoming the next senator, replacing barbara boxer. There was a big, attractive vacancy in one of the most consequential states. Javier becerra worked in other states, building his national profile. He was in the running for the Hillary Clinton running mate position. Hes the highest ranking latino member of congress. And so losing him in the house is significant, but for the party it builds a new part of his resume that could make him a National Political figure in four years or eight years down the line. So, it was an important job. Its a good move for him. Then it does show us in the house when theyre the minority party, there will be these fights. We saw it against nancy pelosi. Trying to find their voice. For becerra, this is a new way to take a new job that may have longterm potential that goes beyond california. A lot happening coast to coast for sure, kelly. Of course, here in the midwrest where we are, we have the indianapolis event coming up within the next hour or so. We have the ins nacincinnati ev tonight. When we talk to Donald Trumps visit to the carrier plant, im curious as to workers response on the ground. Youve been there, what are you hearing . Reporter well, workers, frankly, are ecstatic. These are workers who thought they would be losing their jobs. They thought that for the last several months. You may recall that Youtube Video someone posted, when the plant closing was announced. People were dismayed by the thought of losing these jobs and they knew they wouldnt be able to find other great manufacturing jobs here, these jobs are leaving. We spoke with one of those workers. Listen. Some people are saying this is a christmas miracle here, we get to keep our jobs. Ill be happy. The kids will be having a good christmas and we wont have that worry of daddy wont have his job. Reporter critics, though, will tell you this is one plant. These are 1,000 jobs. What about all of the other manufacturing jobs in the United States . By nbcs count, there are at least 14 plant closures announced in the last two months here in the United States nationwide. So, what happens when all of those plants close down . Is president elect trump going to step in and renegotiate with each of those ceos to keep those jobs here . Unlikely. The true test comes over the next year, what will the president elect do to make these u. S. Companies more competitive on the global scale as hes promised to do . Our sources tell us that that was also part of the negotiations with carriers people here, is that president elect, when he becomes president , would do more to make the u. S. More economically competitive. Hallie . After that stop in indiana hes headed here to cincinnati. Peter, what do you think well see, typical Campaign Rally . Well hear the soundtrack so familiar prior to trumps appearance on stage . Reporter as you and i witnessed over the course of this campaign, donald trump enjoys the adulation of a large crowd. He experienced it for months over the past campaign and hell get back and experience that again in some way. What was first described as a victory tour, now celebrating as a thankyou tour in american cities, particularly those place where the states have gone blue in the past, have gone red, like red. Other places where trump may make visits. I think would well be watching today is tonally how hell change his message. It will be the fiery message or one a little more embracing towards all . I want to pan the camera to this side to show you something thats happening live right now. Something i havent seen. Youve spent some time out here as well. The fdny out here right now. There is no emergency at trump tower but they have been testing the apparatus, according to the firefighters here. Obviously, one of many precautions taking place here at trump tower given how much time the president elect and his family have been spending here. May even spend here after he does take over the presidency. Hallie . And we know that Melania Trump and their son, barron, will remain in new york, at least until the end of the school year. Peter alexander in new york, appreciate that. Blake mccoy, Kelly Odonnell at capitol hill. We to want take one look at our microsoft pulse question so far today. Donald trump is in indiana to talk about this deal with carrier to keep about 1,000 jobs in the u. S. So, does that make you more optimistic about his presidency . We want to hear from you. Head to pulse. Msnbc. Com. Let us know what you think. Were switching gears after the break to those destructive wildfires still burning in the smokey mountains of tennessee. The images coming in are unbelievable. Were learning seven people have been killed, eight others are still missing. Up next, an update on the conditions from one of the most devastated towns. Then a little later after appointing a bunch of people from washington and wall street to highlevel positions, is president elect trump breaking his Campaign Promise to drain the swamp . Thats up for discussion in our daily debate. Were live in cincinnati, ohio. Stop number one of what Donald Trumps team is calling a thankyou tour. Lets be honest, its really a victory lap. Right now firefighters are trying to get a hoojdz a wildfire that destroyed more than 17,000 acres and 700 buildings in parts of tennessee. At least seven people have been killed and 74 people are in the hospital right now. Today officials in gatlinburg are explaining how theyre trying to get this thing under control. We are making significant progress in our search and clearing. It is certainly a distressing time for all of us, and we are absolutely distressed and concerned with though families. Msnbcs mariana is joining us. You listen to those officials talk. You see those stories on the ground. Its incredibly emotional for people having to live through this. Reporter thats right, hallie. We managed to make it into the city of gatlinburg about an hour ago. Access is still very difficult. Were coming to you live from my iphone, so please bear with me if we have any tech issues. This is why theyre not letting people in. This is still smoke burning in the city. And one of the challenges is, of course, that main road from pigeon forge into gatlinburg. It remains closed. That is making the Recovery Efforts very difficult. The gatlinburg city manager said one of the goals just looking into next week is to reopen two of the main arteries on monday as well as the smaller streets. When you drive around gatlinburg now, it pretty much looks like a ghosttown. The rain has been pouring in. It rained last night. But the weather has been very unpredictable. Those goals depend on the weather. I want you to listen to the superintendent of the National Park here. This is what he told us about that rain last night. Lets listen. Do not let the rain from yesterday give us a false sense of security. It has taken us time to get to this point. Its going to take us time to get out of it. Reporter so, hallie, as you heard, it rained but as the fire chief told me, it just didnt rain enough. These hot spots could still rekindle. Im surrounded by some firefighters now. Theyre just standing put, being very vigilant as to this smoke that is still burning because they say if it just catches on, it can go off at any moment. And that is making Recovery Efforts very difficult. Because these hot spots are still burning, it is still very hard even for authorities to identify the bodies theyre finding. So, as you can imagine, its a heartwrenching task for these firefighters here today in gatlinburg. Hallie . Thanks. So important to remember not to get lulled into that false sense of security, as you heard, considering just 48 hours ago a lot of folks thought the worst of these fires were over. They were not. Were waiting to see president elect trump at the carrier air conditioning plant in indianapolis to talk about the deal he came up with to keep 1,000 of the companys jobs in the u. S. Its a great headline for the president elect, but what about for u. S. Workers . Well talk about that up next. To folks out there whose diabetic nerve pain. Shoots and burns its way into your day, i hear you. To everyone with this pain that makes ordinary tasks extraordinarily painful, i hear you. Make sure your doctor hears you too i hear you because i was there when my dad suffered with diabetic nerve pain. If you have diabetes and burning, shooting pain in your feet or hands, dont suffer in silence step on up and ask your doctor about diabetic nerve pain. Tell em cedric sent you. They are the natural borns enemy of the way things are. Yes, ideas are scary, and messy and fragile. But under the proper care, they become something beautiful. We are here in cincinnati, ohio, back in battleground ohio where donald trump will be returning to kick off his thankyou tour. Before that hes got what you can call an opening act for all of this. In just about 30, 40 minutes from now, the president elect is set to visit the Carrier Corporation in indianapolis. Its 2, 2 1 2 hours away from here. Hell be talking about that new deal he struck with that company. Right now the president elects plane is en route to indianapolis. But remember, the stop really a pr prelude to tonight. I want to talk about the carrier deal and talk about what this means for businesses around the country. To do this with me is rick newman, a columnist with yahoo finance. Thank you for being here. Sure. We have new information about sort of the terms of this deal, right, the incentives that carrier got from the state of indiana where Vice President mike pence is still governor, of course. And you cant help but think about the fact that united technologies, which owns carrier, is a huge client or customer or supplier to the government, right, the pentagon, essentially. So, is there anything wrong with this and do you think that a deal like this can be replicated en masse . I dont see how it can be replicated en masse. Thats why this is so startling and strange. We shouldnt be dismisses ive about anything that saves jobs for people who need them. Even if its just one job, right . Thats right. On its face were talking about 1,000 people who now will not have to go looking for a new job, at least any time soon. But a little bag ground that tells you how crazy this is. The state of indiana already granted carrier tax breaks a few years ago to keep those jobs there and to supposedly add some new jobs. And then carrier that apparently wasnt enough and earlier this year carrier said, no its not affordable to stay here. Were moving to mexico. So, indiana actually asked for those tax credits back and got them back. Now its like they upped the ante because the president got involved. Were hearing about these incentives, 7 million, perhaps. What were not hearing is what might have gone on behind the scenes with united technologies, which does about 5 billion gets 5 billion in revenue from the pentagon. One official said the Indianapolis Star thats why carrier decided to keep those jobs there because the big contracts with the government are way more important than 1,000 jobs in indiana. I want to play you awe sound bite from
