MSNBCW MSNBC Live With Kate Snow January 9, 2017

For a key role. Reporter so, controversial, but i would say not totally unexpected. We know that for so long in his campaign, from the very beginning, Jared Kushner, who is a v a v ivanka trumps husband and Donald Trumps soninlaw. One of his inner sishlg leading him on his campaign and Strategic Moves during his candidacy. We expect it will be a similar role when donald trump ends up in the white house on january 20th. Kushner, according to a senior transition official, expected to be named a Senior Adviser. What does that mean . Think of Valerie Jarrett right now in the obama administration, that kind of a confidante, someone, for example, Kellyanne Conway serves in a very similar role now for president elect trump. The reason why you might call it controversial is, obviously, because Jared Kushner is related to donald trump. There have been antinepotism laws put in place but there are certain loopholes that can be figured out to place a Family Member in a position such as this. That apparently is what kushner will be doing. This has come with renewed media attention. Kushner was just on the cover of new york magazine, because of the fact he has been part of these inner circle discussions when it comes to Donald Trumps not Just International dealings but domestic dealings as well. Kushners attorney, a spokesperson for kushners business dealings, is telling nbc news hell start the process of divesting substantial assets. Will donald trump do the same . Thats what were set to find out. Twice in an hour the president elect made impromptu surprise appearances in the lobby of trump tower behind me. He was asked about Jared Kushner and he smiled coyly and said, well see, when asked if he would be named Senior Adviser. When he was pressed about his own conflicts of interest, the president elect punted until wednesday. Wednesday is that huge press conference that is set to happen here in new york. I say huge, frankly, because it has been a very long time since donald trump faced the press and answered questions in a formal setting. Nearly six months. This is something he promised to do last month and then postponed. All indications are wednesday will go forward as planned. Theres a lot the president elect has to answer to, starting with the business dealings. Second on that list, russia the russian interference in u. S. Election and trumps tension with the intelligence community. Another question he didnt answer again. Pledging to answer wednesday. Theres a whole lot of things he says hes going to answer on wednesday. Its a high bar. Have they given you any sense for how long that press conference will be . Is it openended . Reporter theres no time limit on it so far up. Look i think about president obama and his press conferences, they go for at least an hour if not longer than that. The expectation would be, one would imagine if thats any precedent similar, kate. As with so many things with donald trump, i think you can best sum it up in a word, unpredictable. Yes, wait and see. Thanks so much. While thats happening on wednesday, the other big story line this week for the Trump Transition Team will be the confirmation hearings for many of the president elects cabinet picks. But the fact that many of those people havent turned over Background Information and Financial Disclosures has some democrats threatening to draw the process out. Trumps Senior Adviser offered a defense by describing the background process. Its basically just a process that takes a great deal of time. I feel that my clearance information, and it just have you to remember everywhere youve traveled, who was there, with whom youve met, so thats just a timing and process issue. And nobody should use it as an excuse, pete, to hold up the functioning of government. Im joined by my colleague, kelly odonnell, whos on capitol hill, as usual for us today. Kelly, weve heard the word unprecedented thrown around about this. Is it really unprecedented . Is this how it always goes or is this a holdup in terms of the background of all these folks were going to be seeing confirmation hearings for . Well, it is one of those situations where depending on what side youre on, the highly or adjectives may expand or contract. The current commerce secretary, is herself a billionaire working under president obama. But with them comes a lot more complicated in terms of their financial history, their business interest, things that someone who spent a life in Government Service might not bring to the table. So, there are complicating factors. There is ar urgency to try to set up a government and get it going as quickly as possible. Its not unusual for hearings to stretch into the new Administration Simply because. Numbers involved and the time it takes for senators to meet with the nominees, to review the materials that are submitted. One of the Big Questions is if the office of government ethics does not have the completed package yet on a given nominee s there anything that might trip up the confirmation process . Something that needs to be addressed that would not come to light in front of the hearings. We heard a little today from Chuck Schumer on the issue, democrats wanting to slow things down. He says its not just a ploy. Heres Chuck Schumer. Were not doing this for sport. Democrats feel very strongly that pushing for a thorough and thoughtful vetting process is the right thing to do. And heres why. The democratic majority was and is concerned about the hearing schedule, which is so jammed right now, that several high importance hearings will fall on the same day, depriving senators and the American People a chance to properly participate in the vetting process of these nominees. Reporter we may need split screens for some of these confirmation hearings to listen in as theyre happening. Thats part of what chuck shumer is shuker is talking about, they need to process how they want to try to elicit information from nominees. Some wont be controversial at all but for those who present conflicts or financial interests or differing views from the president elect, thats where it could be meaty and substantive. Over time, we do see that it is not uncommon for a nominee whos put forth for a cabinet position to somehow have to remove him or herself because of some unforeseen wrinkle in their past or some issue. That has happened. No one is predicting that on any specific nominees this time but thats part of why they want to slow down the process. Republicans see it differently, want to keep this moving, want to get through all of the names that need to be considered. Overall, there have about 1,000 positions that require senate confirmation. The big names, the top 15 in the government with the cabinet level, thats where well see the big hearings and the Big Questions. And if democrats can try to stage some sort of opposition to these nominees. We dont expect theyll have really the power, based on the numbers in the senate, to undo a trump pick, but they do want to have time to explore it. In some cases, they will try to highlight what they believe to be weaknesses in a candidate or areas where they conflict with donald trump. It is going to be a wild couple of days on capitol hill. Kelly odonnell, thanks so much. Great to see you. I want to bring in New York Times reporter matt apuzo and political analyst robert costa is with us as well. Matt, ill start with you about this crazy week well have. Youve written a lot about senator jeff session, up for attorney general. His hearings will start, i believe, tomorrow and then possibly go into wednesday as well. What do you think democrats may find objectionable about him or will it be easier than we think . Hes a member of one of the most exclusive clubs in washington, thats the u. S. Senate and hes been here for 20 years. He has a reputation on the hill as being a pretty liked guy. So, its going to be hard for, i think, for democrats to mount any opposition, certainly in the minority. To try to stop his confirmation. But i think the goal is just as kelly was saying, i think the goal is to try to put some distance between Jeff Sessions and donald trump. Frankly, through questioning the attorney general nominee, what youre trying to do if youre democrats is to try to sketch out the legal boundaries of the Incoming Trump administration. You use sessions as a way to say, what can donald trump do . You establish that now so that if they go beyond that later, you have some sort of way to try to provide a check. Right. Robert, i want to ask what Hallie Jackson was just reporting. Jared kushner, the soninlaw of president elect trump, being according to our sources named as a top Senior Adviser to this white house. She was talking a bit about some of the controversy behind this. What is your sense from sources . Are people concerned that somebody that close in family relations would be inside the white house . Theres not much concern within the republican party. I just broke some news for the Washington Post that kushner is expected to be here at the capitol tonight, 7 00 meeting with House Speaker paul ryan to go over tax reform. Hell be joined by incoming Reince Priebus and new chief strategist, steve bannon, among other aides did you say 7 00 tonight hes meeting with the speaker of the house . Thats correct. Thats big news. Its very big news. You have kushner now operating not only as a confidante to fatherinlaw, adviser on Foreign Policy. We know he was involved with the statement regarding israel and the United Nations resolution. Now he has his hands in domestic policy. Tax reform starts tonight here at the capitol. Ryan wants to walk through the trump team and kushners in that room. So, would you is he akin to a Valerie Jarrett role we see right now with president obama or is this a creation we havent seen before . Its part Valerie Jarrett in terms of his rapport with his fatherinlaw. He has that trust level that jarrett has with president obama, but theres also a political side, a liaison side, that jarrett wasnt. Kushner is working a variety of fronts for the president elect. Matt, to go back to cabinet level selections and all the confirmation hearings, which do you think of all of them will have the most fireworks in the next couple of days . I mean, its a long list of people were going to see. Well, there could be a real there could be real fireworks with Jeff Sessions. The naacp and aclu are going to be testifying. These are groups sessions in the 80s his nomination for to be a federal judge was held up, in part, because he made comments about groups like this being unamerican. So, i mean, i do think youll see some fireworks. I think youll see youll see democrats play to the civil rights base of the party and really try to hammer away on Jeff Sessions in that regard. Again, democrats have to sick their spots because you dont have the numbers to actually hold people up just on your own principles. Washington post robbest costa, matt appuza. Up next, mr. This weekend former london mayor Boris Johnson, now foreign secretary of the uk, was in new york to meet senior members of president elect trumps Transition Team up. May remember johnson was a champion of brexit, the vote for britain to leave the european union. Im joined by jillian, u. S. Managing editor for the financial times, a newspaper in london. Nice to see you. Thanks for being with us. Thank you. Im actually in new york. Forgive me. Were actually bigger in new york in america than the uk. Is your readership higher here . Yes. Good to know. Thank you for that correction. Appreciate it. Lets talk about the relationship, though. Why is Boris Johnson here . Hes here because essentially hes trying very hard to establish relations with the trump team. Like many people, the government of the uk did not know a lot about the trump team when they were first elected. The only person who had contact with nigel, the forefront of championshiping for brexit, so Boris Johnson is trying hard to catch up. Hes extremely keen to make sure even if the uk does proceed with a socalled hard brexit in the coming months, then it will still have good relations with the u. S. And the support of the u. S. For the potentially m momentous decision. Boris and trump have not always seen eye to eye. There was the brushup during the election when trump described no go zones in london. Explain the history. Essentially, you have two very melodramtic characters who love to hog the limelight, who love to say outrageous things. Boris johnson is one. Few people who can outtrump trump in terms of his memorable comment. When trump said there are no go errors in london, johnson said, there are plenty of dangerous places in new york i wouldnt want to go in case i meet donald trump. Theyre both masters of the putdown line, if you like. What Boris Johnson will try to do is build personal relations. I was here with him earlier last year when he was coming over after the brexit vote to try to explain to american officials what was going on. He is not somebody who talks about policy. He is not somebody who sticks to the script ever, Boris Johnson. Instead, he cuts he cracks a lot of jokes. He likes to create personal relationshi relationships. In way ways, as i say, hes the uk version of donald trump. We just learned in the last few days the Prime Minister of the uk will be coming over for a visit this spring with the new trump administration. How do you see that special relationship, people always call, it how do you see that moving forward . Oddly enough might be be be a time when both sides need a special relationship more than they have in recent years because the uk is very keen to cultivate allies and support outside the continental european area that essentially is trying to leave through brexit. At the same time, the u. S. Wants to show that resetting the Foreign Policy of the obama era doesnt mean they slamming the door on all the rest of the world. Theyre keen to turn to what they regard as a traditional ally, which is the uk. The problem, though, is that theres huge amount of uncertainty on both sides of the atlantic about where the uk is heading with brexit, without brexit, where the u. S. Is headed with donald trump. Theres a lot of uncertainty. One thing we do know is we have two of the most entertaining figures in western politics today, essentially, eyeballing each other. Great to speak with you. Thanks for being here. Thank you. A quick programming note for you. It is premiere night here on msnbc for the record with greta starts tonight at 6 00 p. M. Eastern time. Gabe, what happened in court today . Hi, kate, good afternoon. Esteban santiago had the charges formally read against him and appointed a fub defender. Also some procedural moves where he discussed his finances, whether he could pay for an attorney. Now, the next step here is whether a grand jury hands down the formal indictment. That usually happens in a few weeks or so. Well see if his attorney, as hipically happens in these cases, might ask for a mental competency hearing of some sort. As we know, kate, Esteban Santiagos family s
