MSNBCW MSNBC Live With Kendis Gibson And Lindsey Reiser December 6, 2020

That biden won the election . Not at all. And several republican officials now the focus of trumps anger. And the president allegedly trying to reverse his election loss by calling a friend. And current covid19 cases break records. New lockdowns take effect today in parts of the country. But good news. The u. S. Could approve its first vaccine as early as this week. Good morning, everybody. Its sunday, december 6th. Im lindsey reiser. Im kendis gibson. We have a team of correspondents and analysts following the layest for you right now. Lets get to Josh Letterman in washington. So much has happened overnight. Lets start with the highlights from the rally. If uh ever doubted the capacity of President Trump, to take an event and make it about himself, those doubts were put to rest, as President Trump traveled to georgia for the rally, for the two republicans who are competing in this runoff election. David perdue and kelly leoeffle, they did speak before the president arrived. The president s nearly two hurs on stage, he did bring them up on stage. He delivered some prepared lines from the teleprompter, praising those two republicans. But the vast majority of this rally looked and sounded and felt like any trump valley. The signs were protrump signs. They were not about the two running in the election. And President Trumps remarks were largely oriented around, continuing to perpetuate the allegation of massive voter fraud in georgia, weve seen no evidence of. And to attack the republicans there, that he wants to intervene to overturn the Election Results there. Listen to what President Trump had to say at this rally in georgia last night when it comes to the 2020 election. Let me tell you, this election was rigged. And we cant let it happen to two of the greatest, most respected people in washington. The governor could stop it very easily, if he knew what he was doing. The big question we continue to wonder about as we get closer to the runoff, does this rhetoric from President Trump continue to suggest that elections are rigged in georgia and votes there might not count . Actually have the effect of taking some hardcore Republican Voters and dissuading them from gat bath bothering to vote in this time in november next year. There was back and forth between the president and the governor of georgia. A phone call that didnt go well. At this point, they might be friendemies. Thats exactly right. Its been confirmed from the Governors Office, that he did speak to President Donald Trump yesterday. Theres multiple reports that donald trump used phone call to try to get the governor to intervene by calling a special session of the state legislature to overturn joe bidens victory in that state. This is getting pushback from brian kent, the governor. He said, i called for a signature audit three times to restore confidence in our election and to ensure that only legal votes are counted in georgia. President trump very upset with the governor there not doing more to force an audit of the signatures there. But the Governors Office saying thats not something under his control. Yeah. Read more into that tweet from kemp, what do you want me to do . Thats what he wants. Have them pick the electors, all that the constitutionally in a rut. Joining us is adam harris, a writer for the atlantic. Good to have you with us early here on a sunday. The president denied the reality focusing on the senate runoff. The first 30 minutes were trump tv, just him talking about himself. Is that what republicans feared would happen . Thats what republicans feared would happen. Going into this rally, President Trump had been increasingly attacking this election in georgia. And you had Election Officials coming out and defending the integrity of it. You had james sterling who is one of the election administers, eventually going on a rant about the violence and the threats that have come out of the president s rhetoric. Against Election Administrators and people trying to do their job down in georgia. Going into this night, people were really worried, that the president would continue to stoke some of these and attack people like Governor Brian Kemp and that could ultimately suppress them of the turnout of republicans in january. What are we to make of that move that the president made of picking up the phone and trying to convince the governor to overturn bidens victory in that state . What does that signal . You know, this is very much in line with the unprecedented attack that the president has made against the integrity of this election in several states. Right . So, this is kind of one of the more explicit versions of the president kind of going directly to the source and saying we like somebody that has the power. We want somebody with some power. Thats all we need, is one person to kind of stand up and fight for us and kind of this unprecedented attack on a democraticallyrun election. He also reportedly called arizona governor, doug deucecy, when that governor was certifying the Election Results. You can see in that video that doug ducey silenced his video. You have trump going after previous allies. He would be on stage with him, endorsing him. People that have stuck by his said side in the last four years. I want to talk about the implications that could have, President Trump going after the allies. You wrote an article about how the south already changed. You focused on jamie harrison, even though he lost his race in south carolina, also Stacey Abrams. And talk to us about what you meant by that article headline. Yes. So, in that article, essentially, i walked through the wave that people have been fighting to change the math and the south for years. Right . You had activists such as Stacey Abrams, things like the georgia project, that have essentially gone out and registered voters that have done this legwork, in order to get democrats to the place they are today. Elections arent one during election season. Theyre one of those off years when you need to register voters and get people active and excited. Its already changed. If you look at the major cities in the south, they had several firsts, right . You had firsts, black woman mayor. First plaqblack mayor of this c montgomery and richmond. And the succession of young mayors moving into mayors mansions and competing in statewide elections. With Stacey Abrams run in 2018 and andrews run in 2018 and across the south, you see Raphael Warnick and they havent had success in these areas of yet. But if youre looking towards this runoff, democrats are in a position, i dont think many thought outside of the activists that were doing the legwork for years and years. Adam harris, of the atlantic, and in forbes 30 under 30. Congratulations. I was going to be on that list but missed it by 20 years. Or a good 30. Thank you so much. Thats awesome. Babies are growing up so quickly nowadays. More than a month after the president ial election, the biden team is reportedly slated to meet pentagon officials early next week. This is following reports that the Trump Administration tried to block the president elects Transition Team from meeting with the Defense Department intelligence agencies. We get the details from wilmington. Good morning to you. The pentagon is now denying those initial claims. Whats happening . Good morning, kendis. Thats correct. The pentagon is now saying it is insulted, frankly, that a number of sources have come forward and told news organizations, including nbc news, that they are blocking or at least delaying any kind of meeting between these pentagon intelligence agencies and the Transition Team. And it is voteable, actually. Its been two weeks since the General Services administration actually ascertained the election, legitimizing joe bidens win as the next president of the United States. And since then, transition officials have noted that theres been hundreds of meets across agencies and sub agencies between Trump Administration officials and just officials really getting that smooth transition, that ball rolling to make sure that biden and his team, that he continues to build out, are briefed and ready to take office on day one and really try to put together a number of the problems across the board, even besides defense. One thing to note is, what we are reporting. The reason why there are a bit of the delays and a restructuring of the briefings is because, just days after the election, the Trump Administration actually placed trump loyalists at the top, at the pentagon, who are responsible for these transition briefings. The one notable name that keeps popping up is kash patel. Hes the new chief of staff there. And he is wellknown for those that covered congress, especially during the russia investigations because he was a top aide to california congressman devin nunes, as you remember, ran a partisan investigation. He had mandated to a number of officials, telling them, usually, its actually career officials who brief the Transition Team to try to keep a level headedness. However, he said that a number of them should be trump loyalist briefings. And noting key achievements by the Trump Administration, rather than really giving indepth details on, as we are reporting here, nbc news, a number of countries that biden and his team need to be briefed on, like iran, afghanistan and north korea. Its important to the president elect. President barack obama actually chose joe biden to be his v. P. Simply because of his Foreign Policy knowledge. And though the Transition Team has not commented on the specifics yet, they have noted in the past, that any kind of withholding of information or delay, could become eventually a National Security threat because, biden and whoever he picks to serve, as his secretary of defense, needs to be ready again on day one. Guys . Well have more on the way of this angle with our political panel, a little later in this hour. Coming up, pharmacies on the front lines. Will mom and pop shops be able to handle the vaccine demand once its approved for distribution . I spoke with one pharmacist. Were going to give togetherness. Logistically, its been a nightmare. Im not sure its going to work. Itll work. I didnt know you were listening. Some states hit hard in the spring or in the middle of the second wave. States like new jersey, that i visited yesterday. The governor announced 5,300 new cases and 53 new deaths. This is dire. There is hope on the horizon with the fda expected to approve a vaccine as early as next week. Pfizer is working on the details how it will distribute its vaccine, which has to be kept super cold, to independent pharmacies. I visited one in newark, to get a sense of how they plan to roll this out. When you think about the communities, a lot of them are served by local pharmacies, neighborhood places, and logistics has become an issue. The pharmacist at list tells me the current plan is to ship the vaccine in dry iceboxes that will last, unopened, for five days. Once that box is opened, the vaccine will need to be used in a few hours. They are hoping that modernas vaccine will be easier to use. Well accommodate the people as best we can. We will make it work. This is a group effort from the community, and from us. And were going to be synchronized together so that we can administer a vaccine. Not everyone is ready to get in line just yet. Lets listen. Would you take the vaccine . No. Why not . Im skeptical about it. Not sure. Too fast. I will not personally take it. Public trust is a major issue. Theres a rutgers poll that shows four in ten new jerseyans probably or definitely wont get the vaccine. Thats understandable. Theres a lot of questions about the vaccine and how it works. Lets talk more to discuss the vaccine. The founder and ceo of advancing Health Equity and a yahoo news medical contributor. Doctor, thank you for being here. Good morning, kendis. Good morning. What obstacles could we see when it comes to storage and supply and demand . I have to admit, i have concerns about the small pharmacies. Theyre going to need adequate personal protective equipment for the staff. They will need enough staff to be giving the vaccines. They will have the complicated tracking systems to track which patients received the vaccine and who has to come back in 28 days for their second dose, as well as the cold chain issues. A Pfizer Vaccine has to be used within five days and be kept on dry ice. If its not used in that amount of time, that vaccine goes to waste. How are they going to make sure they keep the logistics in place. One of the concerns has been that federal money has not trickled down to state and local do departments of health to support pharmacies. Because thats happened, hospitals and large chain pharmacies have the resources and small pharmacies dont. They will be crucial for the rollout. That woman i talked to was skeptical, she thinks the vaccine was rushed. The fda said they could approve the distribution of pfizers vaccine. And thats the same one that was approved to be distributed in the u. K. This week. What would you tell that woman or someone else that doesnt trust the process . And what does it mean for all of us if so many people dont get the vaccine . Right. I get it. I have spoken to people in my own family that has the same response as the woman you interviewed. We will need Public Health campaigns that explain to the public how was the vaccine researched and developed in such a quick amount of time . And to explain to people it wasnt rushed. Instead of steps occurring consecutively, it occurred in parallel. We need to get everyone onboard. We need about 70 of the population to be vaccinated so that we can have herd immunity to protect other people, so that the Public Health campaign, the messaging, the outreach, is going to be crucial, to reach people like the woman you just interviewed. Whats the percentage for herd immunity . Im hearing 60 to 80. I say 70 is an average. Between 60 and 80 . We need 60 of people to have the antibodies in their blood to protect them against coronavirus. Im an idiot. Explain this to me. If i have a vaccine and lindsay has the vaccine and my family members have the vaccine, why do we need 70 of americans to have the vaccine . Its the number that makes it protective for a general population. Yes, in your home, you would be safe with people that you live with. But that golden spot, between 60 and 80 , is a number where, even 20 are not vaccinated, we can keep the 20 safe if 80 of the people are vaccinated. Its how herd immunity works. And usually, if we cant get there naturally, that would involve too many people dying of coronavirus. We had 15 , 20 of the violation. If we have more of that, well have more death. We cant have that. Before we let you go, if we do achieve the herd immunity threshold, does that mean the coronavirus would cease to find new hosts and essentially not become an issue anymore . Exactly. Ideal until a new one the flu, every year theres a new strain. This may be the situation, just like the flu vaccine, we need to develop another Coronavirus Vaccine to address a strain thats prevalent in that year. Okay. You cleared up a lot for us. And i argue, kendis is not an idiot. Thank you. I agree to that. Absolutely not. Okay. Thank you. I will disagree with all of you. But thank you. Appreciate it. Speaking of the strains, the baltimore reiavens is trying to figure out whats happening right now. Its been hit by covid. Later in the hour, were going to zero in on football during the time of covid19. Do we really need pro sports right now with all thats going on . Its a controversial question. Plus, follow the money. Donald trump and the rnc say they have raised 200 million since election day. They say its being used to fight the results. Where is the money really going . .
