For the third day in a row, a Record Number of covid19 cases recorded in the u. S. , hospitals, struggling to keep up with the onslaught of cases, with one state forced to activate a Mass Fatality Program and tensions flare between the Trump Administration and joe bidens team after the ppg decid, penta decided to cancel all transition meetings until after the new year. It is a busy day ahead, a busy week, we have a team of correspondents and analysts standing by following the latest for us right there. But first a look at what happens happening next. Tomorrow, a cdc Advisory Panel will likely decide which group gets the next round of vaccine doses after Health Care Workers and nursing home residents. Also tomorrow, moderna kicks off its vaccine distribution, nearly six million doses expected to be shipped out to more than 3,000 sites across the country. And on monday, president elect joe biden and incoming first lady dr. Joe biden is set to receive a covid19 shot in public. Moderna employees are busy prepping vaccine doses and rolling out in the coming days now that the fda has approved it for emergency use across the u. S. And msnbc is at the Distribution Center for moderna in memphis with more. Reporter things will move fairly quickly at this mckesson plant here in the memphis area, mckesson is the company that moderna is using to help distribute its vaccine, all across the country, and mckesson is familiar with the supply chain, having done this for the seasonal flu vaccine, and also scaling up during the h1n1 or swine flu pandemic. So theyre familiar with the supply chain. What we know is that the cdc is placing orders for this vaccine, theyre placing it directly to mckesson, telling the workers here how often or how many doses of the vaccine to place in different shipments and to where to send those shipments off to. We know that workers will turn modernas stockpile of vaccines into individual shipments that will then go off across the country. We know that theyll be packaged into individual boxes, with freezer packs inside, combined with some medical supply kits that are already premade. And then sent off using fed ex and u. P. S. Trucks at any moment. So we can expect things to move fairly quickly. One big difference between what were going to be seeing in the next couple of day with the Moderna Vaccine compared to what we saw last week, with the Pfizer Vaccine, is the supply chain. And the storage required for this vaccine. Unlike pfizer, this vaccine does not require those special freezers that have the sub arctic temperatures. This vaccine can be placed in regular more common vaccine freezers. That allows it to go out to more places, more quickly and we can expect to see these vaccine go to places like doctors office, nursing homes, and even pharmacies. This is all happening in the next new days. And should allow for more rural hospitals to receive it as well. Lets focus on california because that state is reeling from the third and deadliest surge of the coronavirus pandemic, surpassing some of the worlds hardest hit countries with two people in Southern California dying every hour. The Emergency Services are overwhelmed. And icu availability, were told in some parts, is at zero percent. Officials are warning it will only get worse as we look toward christmas and new years, and Steve Patterson has the latest. It is not hyperbole at all to say this is a dire situation here in Southern California where the icu room availability has been at zero percent, or at least hovering around it, zero percent to fluctuate, and with an icu room, youre talking about a dynamic situation, people come in and get admitted and do better and leave and people come in and do better than expected and go to a stepdown unit which is happening more often because of the rates where it is. And people often go into the icus and can often die. So the numbers can go up and down. And 700 beds in l. A. County and maybe about 70 icu rooms available and that accounts to the fact that most are in Surge Capacity and can flex up to 20 of the capacity that theyre used to, but the situation here gives you a picture of whats happening because it is so dire, because about two people on average in l. A. County, are going to die every hour or so, because one in every 80 people in this county have a case of coronavirus, and so hospitals who account for that have to do all they can, but a lot of times, that means they have to reduce the level of care that theyre used to providing because the ratios of trained nurses to patients is so low, because theres a continuous flood of these patients, and theres not really any where to put people. So now were in a situation where there are field hospitals being built all up and down california to look out for noncovid patients because they have filled these icu and e. R. Rooms. The warning for the next two to weeks, which i should mention encapsulates christmas and new years, and were paying for what happened with the decisions people made to travel over thanksgiving, and Health Officials are desperately worried about traveling for this holiday season. So theyre asking people, please, do not gather, do not come together to celebrate these holidays, because you can make the situation much worse. Of course, there is hope on the horizon with the availability of a vaccine, but that is in the distant future, and people need to batten down right now. Back to you guys. Steve, we do get a sense that youre feeling that effect of so many people who went home to visit others, during thanksgiving now. Thank you. Joining us right now is dr. We want to talk about the vaccine and this new vaccine, and with the public having the access to the moderna one soon, there are a lot of folks wondering, does it make a difference, can i say to my doctor, i want the Pfizer Vaccine as opposed to the moderna one. Well, it is an honor to be here today and im very excited about the announcement of this new Moderna Vaccine being available to our country. And patients ask me that question all the time. My colleagues ask me that question. My answer has been the same. I would take whichever vaccine is available to me that has been authorized by the fda. Both the Pfizer Vaccine and the Moderna Vaccine have excellent effectiveness and will protect us. So whichever one you can get, i would go for it. And how long before enough americans are vaccinated to reach herd immunity . Thats a great question. We, there are a lot of estimates out there, we would definitely like to see over 60, hopefully 70 to 80 of people with good protection but we have to remember, vaccines only work on top of really Good Public Health measures. So we have to continue our three ws, washing our hands, wearing a mask, and watching our distance. That, plus the vaccine, equals victory over covid19. Theres new polling that shows that the share of americans who say theyll get the covid19 vaccine, as soon as its available, has doubled, take a look at the numbers right there, at least a breakdown, from age 18, and this is since september, and why do you think that more people are feeling more confident in this . Well, i think this is a triumph of science and education of science, we had noticed that the confidence in the vaccines and science had eroded over the discussions over the summer and fall. And so us as physicians, as clin ictions, and scientists, have been clinicians, and scientists have been going out there and trying to assure the publics confidence and i think that is working and wonderful to see. Those at the fda and the nih have been working diligently and we should trust them and its wonderful to see that trust is coming back, and these great vaccines will be taken by millions and millions of americans in the next few weeks. Doctor, we should find out tomorrow who would be next in line to get the covid vaccine. Following Health Care Workers and nursing home residents, who do you think should be next . Well, i definitely am eager to see what the acip, the Advisory Committee for immunization practices will discuss and release. We definitely believe that essential workers need to get access to these vaccines and our most vulnerable population, those with multiple medical illnesses we need to get vaccines to them as well. As a physician who takes care of primarily transplant and cancer patients, i would love to see that our patients that i see, every day, who are at risk, have vaccine available to them in the coming months. Doctor, there appears to be, ill call it an arms race, to get the vaccine, and it seems in a lot of cases, at least in the last week or so, that the rich and influential are winning, notice that Rupert Murdoch has gotten the vaccine, already, a former controversial governor of alabama has gotten the vaccine, does some of that concern you at all . I think we do need to be very careful about equity and appropriate delivery of these vaccines. Not only to make sure that we protect our population appropriately, but also that we continue the confidence of our communes in equitable process. Im very proud that here at emery health care we prioritize physicians and nurses and Health Care Providers on the front line, and we also put priority on our Environmental Services staff, and our Food Services staff, who are going in and out of these rooms, theyre absolutely vital to the operations of our hospital, and delivering Excellent Health care to our patients. They are all included, and all are getting vaccines over this weekend, and i think thats what we need to be very careful of, is making sure we give the vaccine to the right people at the right time, so that we can really build and get into that herd immunity ha we need. Doctor, lets talk about that time line really quickly because joe bidens advisers have warned that president trumps time line might be too optimistic reportedly saying that the widespread distribution we need might take longer. What do you think . Where do you land on that . Well, i think we need to carefully watch the distribution, and i think we need to have optimism that we have good mechanisms in place to deliver. But we also have to have patience and vigilance to make sure that its occurring well. And the evidence of another vaccine, the Moderna Vaccine will definitely help the distribution. As you mentioned, the vaccine can be stored at less stringent conditions than the Pfizer Vaccine which will help with the delivery of the vaccine. We hope the distribution pipelines continue to flow nicely. But we do need to be vigilant. We can hope. There have been some snags in the distribution of pfizer. In a tweet he urged his followers to take to the streets the day congress is set to count electoral votes for president. On his favorite platform, he said, quote, big protest in dc on january 6th. Be there. Will be wild. Nbcs Josh Lederman is at the white house. Do we know nor about the white house . Reporter not at the moment, but a week ago when the president called for support toesz protest in the streets in support of his baseless allegations about election fraud, it quickly turned violent with some 33 arrests here in washington last weekend. And four people stabbed. Others trans ported to the hospital. As well as more than half a dozen Dc Police Officers who were injured in that protest, nonetheless, the president now calling for what he says will be a wild protest, on january 6th, weve asked the white house for more information, about what exactly the president is referring to there, but this january 6th date that hes referring to has to do with the joint session of congress, that will take place on that date, in early january, to affirm the result of the Electoral College vote in support of president elect joe biden, the 306 electoral votes. Now we know that there are House Republicans as well as at least one incoming republican senator, tommy tuberville, who are intending to object essentially to the tally of that electoral vote and thats something they could do where they try to reject one or more states votes in that Electoral College tally and that doesnt have a prospect of having president elect joe biden of taking office in january but clearly something the president s supporters want to do as he continues to make the claims that somehow the election was stolen from him when of course it was not and we can tell from the president s twitter feed how keenly focused he remains on this, this many weeks after the election, and the president tweeting only parenthetically about this massive news with the Moderna Vaccine, that you were just discussing, the president tweeting, congratulations, the Moderna Vaccine is now available but that one tweet punch waiting a series of half dozen tweets the president sent out in the last 24 hours or so, continuing to make baseless allegations that the election was stolen from him and that there is some pathway for republicans to try to change the results. And also contrasting that with no mention of some 300,000 covid victims, and no mention of a russia hack, which is a major news item here, and not for 2020 but typically would be. Josh, because the president thinks he has a path, despite the path being shut down by the Supreme Court itself is, there anything left that the president can do, any Resource Area than just twitter . The president s legal team says they are continuing to pursue these individual court cases including some that they are trying to push up through the state courts. And of course, you know, its hypothetically possible on that january 6th date if they were able to get enough states electoral votes thrown out, that that could change things, but that would require majority votes in both the house and the senate. The house of course controlled by democrats. And a number of republican senators saying they would not go along with that. So mathematically, not really a chance. Completely unrealistic goal there. In the meantime, very strong reaction overnight to the president s latest attempts for, to overturn the election, lets bring in former federal prosecutor Michael Zelden in on this conversation, and michael, good morning, so it seems as if the president and his team, or the president has transitioned from trying to get the courts to overturn the election to downright calling for outright protests in the streets of dc. It is pretty unusual for a president to incite violence in the city because when as you reported, they were here last, the proud boys and ilk, there were stabbings and Police Officers injured and for the president to be the friend of law enforcement, to invite violence into the district of columbia is unacceptable. And there are many dc churches that were vandalized during that time, this from a president who made a point in june to go to a church across the street in Lafayette Park for a photo op. There are reports that the president is weighing a number of different pardons including a possible pardon for Edward Snowden. He could be on that list. Which has several republican members split over whether he deserves one. Are these pardons legal . No matter who it is .
