Allegations. Three quarters of frankens democratic colleaguings are now calling for him to resign. Interestingly, most republicans sitting this one out. Trust me, i got questions today. I want to start with msnbcs Garrett Haake live on the hill. Do we know for sure what franken will say . Can he throw a carve ball here . It seems unlikely. In fact, last night, his office used twitter to push back pretty hard at the idea that he had made any specific decision about what he was going to do today. Saying only that he would speak on this today. And he was still in conversations with his family and his colleagues about figuring out the pathway forward. But also make no mistake, it could be very, very difficult if he were to decide he would hang on to this seat, having completely lost the support of his caucus. Were up to i think 35 Democratic Senators who have now publicly called on franken to step aside. Remember, there are three Democratic Senators on the Ethics Committee who are prevented by rule of that committee from saying anything about franken because theres an investigation there. If you pump that up to 38, youre at 80 of the Democratic Caucus essentially saying its time for al franken to move on. This started yesterday. With a group of Democratic Women senators who just felt like the mounting accusations, the number, the scope and the pattern was too much. And it was time for franken to step aside. It started with Kristin Gillibrand yesterday, take a listen. Enough is enough. I think when we start having to talk about the differences between Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment and unwanted groping, youre having the wrong conversation. You need to draw a line in the sand and say none of it is okay. I do not feel that he should continue to serve. So thats the situation al franken is walking into today. Whether he decides to resign in this floor speech or not today, certainly the most important and, again, potentially the last speech of his political career were expecting today. All right, i want to bring my panel in. Maya harris, an nbc political contributor. Matt welch, editor at large for reason, a libber tarn monthly magazine. Maya, i got to start with you. Is this the end of the road for al franken . Does he have a choice here . Dont think he has a choice. Youve got 35 democrats. Your own caucus is not standing by here and saying its time for you to resign. I think that this is an example of the fact that we ought to be Holding Elected Officials to the highest standards when it comes to issues like this, that theyre in positions of public trust and if you violate the public trust, there are consequences for that and there has to be accountability. I think thats what you saw, you know, senator after senator come out yesterday and stand up for starting with the women who stood up and said that enough is enough, its time to resign. Okay, but is this not an odd Tipping Point . We had at least half a dozen women accuse franken of inappropriate behavior. Then on the day that the seventh and eighth women come out, the dam breaks. You needed al frank on the tax vote which was razor thin and then the special election in alabama. This isnt about ethic, its politics. Of course it is. Politics is about politics. I know its hard to believe that its a wonderful life isnt a true story and these kinds of things. Politics is a dirty game. The timing here is completely opportunistic. It wasnt a spontaneous demonstration yesterday. It was coordinated in advance. Republicans have been spending every time roy moore went up into the polls. And democrats were reading this and reading this, make daylight in between the two parties and how they treat these kinds of scandals. Even if it is political to a degree, that still means something. Once you decide that somethings not good for your politic, that is an indication to some degree that the culture is shifting and that power is shifting and you actually have to do something about it. I want to share what dig dut dick durbin said. He was talking through the al franken case. Its about process. Watch. Lets have a hearing, an investigation. Lets let this really reach whatever conclusion its going to reach. But through a due process. I think we were trying to accumulate the evidence, weigh the charges and i think thats a natural and fair reaction. But the latest disclosures i think have reached a Tipping Point. But why . I mean, the Ethics Committee, the hearings, isnt that what the democratic process is about . I saw that question, what about the Ethics Committee, and she didnt have an answer. The Ethics Committee wasnt constituted to make this sort of determination. Also, you have these accusers accusing him. Franken not really denying it. Whats an Ethics Committee going to do, find fact . Politics, i guess we only use it only pejoratively. Every time you deliver for your constituents, its politics. Every time you take a stand that might reflect well on you for political gain, thats also politics. You know, the fact it was coordinated would have disorganized the effort, have been better. It was a coordinated effort to get al franken out of the senate. If one party wants to say, look, theres going to be a party that counts with Sexual Harassment and theres going to be a party that doesnt. If we have to sacrifice franken to brand ourselves the party that doesnt, thats what we want to do. Is this not the year of the ultimate age of hypocrisy . Lisa murkowski, a republican, to come out and call for al franken to resign, does Lisa Murkowski not remember that her, our president of the United States, donald trump, who she stands behind, has more accusers than al franken and have accused him of worse. How does Lisa Murkowski stand up and say i think al franken need to step down and stand silent when it comes to our president , our republican president . Not just her but Mitch Mcconnell too. Franken needs to resign. Just bookmark that one and watch mcconnells attitudes not just towards donald trump but towards roy moore. Like he wasnt going to seat roy moore. He was going to lead Mitch Mcconnells wife elaine chao says on the Sexual Harassment front, we need to move on. But hypocrisy is working for them. Good point. The other thing thats working for them is they approach their own situation, when it happens in their own house, to deny, degrade and dig in. Thats the other thing thats working for them. They deny this happened. We saw this with roy moore. We saw it with roy trump. To dig in, to say im not going to resign. Ultimately, it is working for them. Now, we dont know whether its going to work in alabama. I think alabama is going to be the next test. At donald trump is the most unpopular president thats right, 2017, whats going to happen, is going to be an indicator and i do think we have to see what happens in 2018. We saw all the women that poured out into the streets. We saw a month ago today, november 7th, in the election, all the women who turned out in the election, the big gender gap we saw in the vote. All of the women running for office and getting elected to office. I think were going to see the results of this over time, even though up until now for republicans this has worked. We can talk all day long about how unpopular President Trump is. He is a political svengali. An unpopular, completely unqualified, morally reprehensible person became president of the United States. I cannot believe lightnings going to strike me, im saying this. I want to share what Laura Ingraham had to say. Theyve come down with a sudden case of feverish morality but what it really is nothing more than a political calculation by the dems. It sets the precedent for the democrats to try to drive roy moore from office should he win the alabama senate. And, two, this is the next step in the quest to impeach President Trump. I feel like lightning is going to strike me. Does Laura Ingraham have a point here . Democrats are going al franken could be the sacrificial lamb and say, look at the moral high ground we found. Doesnt it take one simple moment for republicans to turn around and say, reminder, you stood behind bill clinton for 40 years. I think the accusation is theyre trying to grab the moral high ground but i think they did it. 20 years ago is 20 years ago. Theres nothing you can do about bill clinton now. But you have the republican in the house of representatives. You have the president. What are you republicans doing about it right . The people of alabama can vote. And thats a democratic process. Now you have the exact same situation. Theres no analogous situation to a president who served three terms ago and now evidence is coming out. You have exactly analogous situation. Theyre in the house. Youre doing nothing about it. So let the people decide what the parties stand for. Last point though. That is a great point. What do republicans do . You could say roy moore, lets let the people of alabama vote. What do they do about farrenhot . I mean, something. Technically speaking. You thought there couldnt be a new low. The president of the United States of america and the Republican Party has gotten behind a pedophile in alabama. So, i mean, i dont think theres a lower ground for the republicans to go on this. And so lets wait and see. Ryan has not to this point suggested that hes going to call for farrenholts resignation. Hes had an 84,000 settlement, three times the amount of the settlement that people keep pointing to for john conyers. Lets wait and see. I think were going to be waiting for a long time. Hes expendable in a way that trump and moore arent. Violence breaking out in the west bank, just one day after President Trump recognized jerusalem as the capital of israel. The Israeli Military moments ago firing tear gas at palestinian protesters. Msnbc host and correspondent eman mohadin is safe. Give us an update. Yes, you know, stephanie the protest started today in some of the squares in the towns on the west Bank Including where we are here in ramallah. As expected, those protests turneded into marches and they moved a little bit further out and thats where we are now, on outskirts of ramallah, near an Israeli Military base not too far away from where we are. Ill have my camera pan over to show you the scene unfolding over the past couple of hours. You see there in the distance palestinian youth, theyve burned tires, created a little bit of a road barricade for the entry point into that military base. Soldiers from the Israeli Military that are approached above in that military base have come out in their jeeps as well. Theyve been lobbing tear gas at the crowds. Its thinned out in the last couple of minutes because just as we were about to come to you, they lobbed about a dozen or so tear gas canisters in our direction. And thats whats kind of pushed the crowd further back away from where we are so its thinned out a little bit. A lot of the folks youre seeing, Young Palestinian men mostly, throwing stones, blocking and barricading some of the roads behind me, creating some of that smoke screen youre seeing there that has been billowing for a couple of hours. The military for the most part has been in their positions. Theyve not yet come down here. Weve covered many of these standoffs before. I can tell you how they usually stand out. We dont have a sense of any casualties right now. We have been seeing palestinian ambulances come to the front lines, whisk people away. We havent gotten any numbers as to injuries. We dont have any fatalities on either side. It gives you a sense of the tension that has boiled over, over the past 24 hours, since that decision was made. Its a scene similar to this repeating itself in other towns and cities across the occupied west bank. We heard in the town of hebron, about 17 people were injured in similar clashes to those were seeing here behind me, stephanie. All right, in the west bank, please, stay safe. Now we have to turn to another dangerous story, the growing emergency in Southern California. Right now, some 2,000 firefighters are battling several mass wildfires all around the los angeles area. Since then, more than 100,000 acres have burned. So far, about 200,000 people have evacuated the area. The numbers expected to grow today as crews brace for Near Hurricane Force Winds that could fan the flames. Msnbcs jacob sovarof is on 101 north in Ventura County. He joins us know phone. Hows your family, hows your house . Everybodys doing okay with me, thank you very much. The thing i wanted to point out as we travel north on the 101, looking out to my right, to the east, you can see the flames shooting up over the ridges here in Ventura County. 90,000 of the 100,000 acres that are on fire in Southern California are part of this thomas fire. And folkings as are describing winds out here today as epic. That comes from cal fire, the official state fire organization. Up to 85mileanhour gusts in the Santa Monica Mountains in Ventura County. And that just makes this growing fire increasingly more unpredictable. Something i dont think ive ever heard before as a resident of Southern California is the 101, which were traveling on right now, northbound, is actually shut off between Ventura County and Santa Barbara county, as well as some smaller highways. And that means there is no passable road between Ventura County and Santa Barbara county. Its an extraordinary thing to comprehend, given the sheer amount of people that live in this area. The fire has burned all the way from the mountains out to coast. Thats fire that is ten miles long. Its something thats almost impossible to wrap your head around. Theres no way to see the full extent of the fire from the ground. And then of course when you look at it from the air, smoke just blankets this entire area. With the Winds Continuing to pick up, nobody really knows. And most especially the firefighters brave men and women on the ground which way the thing is going to go next, stef. Were looking at a video of a guy who rescued a rabbit. Given those roads are closed, are there people just triangulated in there who cant get out . This image right now on the screen go ahead. I just need to point out to our viewers, this image, it looks like hot lava. This is the 405. It looks like hot lava pouring down a mountain. It is stunning. Talk to us about the people in the area. Are they stuck in there when you talk about these major road closures . Mandatory evacuations have been taking place over the last couple of days. One area in the cross hairs of this thomas fire right now is the ow ojai valley. Most of the valley has been evacuated as of last night. Again, credit to the firefighters, both the state wide agencies and the local agencies for trying to get people out ahead of this thing. Im looking at the, you know, if youve driven along the 101, the big eucalyptus trees along the highway here, it is just as dry as can possibly be. Were starting to hit lane closures here on the 101 freeway. Its basically a parking lot. So when were able to, were going to try to get some pictures of this because ive never really seen anything like this before. Some of the biggest interstates not only in california but in america, bumper to bumper yesterday. It was the 405 freeway in los angeles. Today its the 101 going through Ventura County in Santa Barbara. Stay safe. These images are devastating. Our thoughts are with everyone in the l. A. Area. Donald trump jr. Appeared before the House Intel Committee for eight hours yesterday. His response surrounded conversations with his father left many on the committee scratching their heads. Remember, as the wall street journal said to President Trump a few months ago, when it comes to russia, transparency is key. If you are not transparent about all things relating to russia, it will take you down. The morning walk was so peaceful. Until. It. Wasnt. Dont let type 2 diabetes get between you and your heart.
