Two people were sent to the hospital and one of them is already out. That other person who is still in hospital, we understand they dont have any lifethreatening injuries. They said they arrested a young man in his late 20s and said hes not cooperating. Its hard to understand exactly what that means. He hasnt been formally identified by the cops. Were still waiting for all of that information. But right now, they are investigating this, as you mentioned, stephanie, as a terrorist attack. Thats because of the deet lib rat way in which the driver drove into these bicyclists and other pedestrians and the symbolic site here, thats what led to Police Investigating this as a terrorist attack. This is parliament is out of session for the month of august. There are no parliamentarians who are here. The attack took place at 7 00 in the morning. Which means its far too early for a lot of people to be on the streets. Its really unclear exactly what the motive is. Were going to come back to you with more later on as the police tells us. Now we have to turn to the escalating battle between President Trump and his former protegee omarosa. After she went back on tv, revealing more recorded conversations with white house officials. Trump took his insults to a whole other level. In a tweet this morning, he called omarosa a crazed low life and then congratulated john kelly for firing her and he then referred to her as that dog. I want to go to nbcs Geoff Bennett at the white house. The president has tweeted about omarosa at least eight times, calling her a dog. I know in the past the president has said im too busy of a guy, i dont have time for Political Correctness. But theres a huge difference between Political Correctness and common decency. There are plenty of people out there who dont want to call easter eggs spring spheres. But theres a large divide between that and the president of the United States referring to yet another woman, an africanamerican woman, as a dog. And look, stef, this is how the president is choosing to spend his time this morning. Look, he is clearly consumed by all of this. Hes tweeted about omarosa eight times since yesterday morning. Now the president comparing omarosa, a woman he hired a year ago and kept in a highprofile, highpaying job, hes now referring to her as an animal. In effect, trying to prove he didnt use a racist slur by using a sexist slur. So donald trump has a history of these kinds of misogynistic attacks on prominent women. As you mentioned, i think youre alluding to the fact that during the 2015 gop debate, he was asked if it was okay to call women fat pigs and slobs and he said he doesnt have time for Political Correctness. It really isnt about Political Correctness, its about common decency. Fat pigs and dogs. I want to play part of the conversation that omarosa recorded with Katrina Pierson. It played on pbs this morning. Take a listen. I am trying to find at least what context it was used in to help us maybe try to figure out a way to spin it. I said, well, sir, can you think of anytime that this might have happened, and he said no. Well, thats not true so he goes, how do you think i should handle it . And i told him exactly what you just said, omarosa. Well, it depends on which scenario youre talking about. And he said, why dont you just go ahead and put it to bed. He said. No, he said it. I want to remind you, yesterday, omarosa told us day in and day out, thats what the co coms team does, craft lies for the president. Sarah sanders is usually franked by lawyers who are trying to help them figure out how he can craft lies to tell the American People. Lies that wont get them in trouble. I know you spoke to Katrina Pierson about this. Just last night, she told a very different story. She did. She and other Trump Campaign advisers that denied the conversation like the one we just heard, they said that didnt take plate. Katrina pierson gave me a statement yesterday saying this is all a complete fabrication, stef, by omarosa. But on that tape, you heard Katrina Pierson speaking of donald trump and this purported n word tape and said he said it, hes embarrassed by it. Nbc news, we should point out, has not been able to verify the authenticity of that recording. In which donald trump uses the n word. And they talked repeatedly about how to handle it. Ive been calling Katrina Pierson, all morning, but no word back yet. Between two people who are of compromised credibility. One of whom, omarosa, seems to have evidence to back up at least some of her claims. Its like Michael Cohen all over again, two people without any credibility, but ones got the tapes to prove it. Governor, what is your take on all of this . The president , again, spending the last 24 hours, going after one of his former employees. Putting the context, all the people around that the point. Its an embarrassment. Its an embarrassment to the country. Its an embarrassment to all of us. We ought to be outraged at the language he uses. This isnt about Political Correctness. This is denigrating people. Like a bully. Thats what we teach our kids we dont want them to do. We have big concerns in our schools about bullying and what it leads to. And yet we seem to have the bully in chief in the white house. Its also its also undermining the credibility of the United States as a nation for the rest of the world. And that becomes really important as we try to move forward and what is a very complicated world that needs the United States that is strong and stable. And this man is not. Whats your take on this, the president s tweet today . What did you think when you saw it . Well, when you call a woman a dog, and we know what that means. And we know what that context is. Thats probably the worst thing you can call a woman, obviously. Its amazing because, you know, they were so close and so loyal. Obviously theyve turned on one another. This is a woman who said in a pbs documentary that people will one day get on their knees and bow at the altar of trump. Well, shes i guess the female version of cohen. She doesnt have any credibility. But she has incriminating information that is still relevant. And that happens. Were still saying theres no honor amongst thieves. But i think his reaction, what i saw the tweet, indicates his fear. This is something that is getting to him. Why would someone because she wasnt very high on the totem pole in terms of leadership in the west wing. What is so threatening about what she is doing when everybody else has said and done things about, and theres going to be more . Hes threatened about this. If the Katrina Pierson tape is accurate, if it cant be authenticated, obviously he did use that word. Im sorry, i might have missed something. Is there a date . Did she furnish a date as to when that was recorded . I dont know the answer. Well find out. Its much more than that though. Governor, we have seen republicans and Business Leaders time and again try to push away President Trumps tweets. Say look at the policies, not his tweets. Even though spicer said in the beginning of this administration consider it official statements from the white house. You tweeted back in july that republicans cannot just complain, they need to reach out to members of congress. Do you see any evidence of this happening . Any political courage here . Im beginning to see it in the public. The public is starting to push back. Theyre finally getting it. Even though you see the polls that say youve got 20 of the 29 take the high number of registered republicans who think it would be all right if donald trump were to shut down news outlets that dont agree with him, which i think is just appalling. Thats a very small number. The rest of the public is saying no, we dont use this language. Oh, by the way, youve kind of got more important things to do than go after one former staff member, please. But what about our elected leaders . We call them leaders for a reason. I know, i wish we had more. And theyre saying and doing essentially nothing. I think theyre going to have an upset at the polls. I trust the American People are going to send them a message at the polls. Thats the problem. You have only a 10 voter turnout in primaries. That was the average. At the most, 14 . Those are the most partisan and tend to be the most extreme who are giving us the choices for the fall which is why people have said a pox on both your houses. And they stay home. So if for the presidency we get 50 , were happy, so now were stuck in the position where the extremes are controlling the dialogue. People didnt go out and vote. But paul ryan shows up to work. Mitch mcconnell is going to rock up and be there on the hill. Do they not notice that yesterday the president made no mention of john mccain. Absolutely appalling. He made no mention of john mccain and hes up to eight tweets attacking omarosa. Where is Republican Leadership . I cant explain why they dont. I mean, i can. What theyre saying behind closed doors, they have a lot to say. All they care about is another vote in their caucus or another percentage on their reelect. For too long, on both sides, to think about just politics, not policy. They judge everything through that political prism. Not the policy prism. Right now theyre saying those are the voters who come out and vote. If i get them mad, im not only not going to get them to the polls, im not going to have the Financial Support that so many of these shadow groups, if you want to call them that, but the superpacs give to the extremes. Weve got to stand up, those in the center, and say no, weve got your back. If youre going to stand up and say i will work with the other side, because i want to solve problems, im not going to just adhere to what leadership wants. Im going to stand up to leadership. Thats a very important statement. I think what she said to you and ali yesterday, when they prep him to lie. Is that not obstruction . She said that on television yesterday. All the white house staff started shaking. Mark, she also said behind closed doors, all that shes done, all that she saved us from, all that shes done for the africanamerican community, when theres no evidence of that. So, you know, she may not have much credibility but think what shes presenting to us is some pretty incriminating evidence about the president s character. Even if this is a side show, whether or not he used the n word, were all rooting for this country. Can the administration find their way through this . Because omarosa is not a oneoff. Think about the roster of lewandowski, rob porter, paul manafort, va secretary, tom price, scott pruitt. Dont forget him. Can they find their way through this . It doesnt seem to be changing its behavior at all and youre not getting the pressure from the hill. If his overall ratings fall below a certain percentage point, maybe then republicans in the house and senate will stand up. Theres a group called the Problem Solvers Group within the congress. And youve got 24 republicans, 24 democrats. They have agreed theyll Work Together and if twothirds of them come to a position on an important issue, theyll vote as a bloc. If Congress Gets close after this next election, if democrats take it over, it wont be by a huge margin. If they dont, theyll be a whole lot closer. And thats when a group like that starts to become very important because they can force leadership to work with them, to work with people who want to solve problems and are not going to and will ignore this president and try to plow through him and get us through the next two years. Heaven help us if he gets reelected. Put politics aside. Problem solving, that is what people voted for. Doesnt seem to be what theyre getting just yet. President trump taking a victory lap this morning after the fbi agent was fired. Peter strzok, a 22year veteran whose career was derailed by antitrump texts sent during the 2016 campaign. Those very texts sent by strzok to his lover and former fbi lawyer lisa page triggered furious backlash from republicans and the president who repeatedly held them up as socalled evidence of a deep state conspiracy against him. Remember, strzok was an integral part of two of the biggest investigations in recent memory. He was the lead agent of the investigation into Hillary Clintons private email server. He worked on bob muellers investigation into russian interference for several months last year. We should make it clear that mueller removed strzok when he found out about the text but the damage was already done. In june, the department of justices Inspector General found strzok had shown a, quote, willingness to take official action to prevent trumps election. Strzok disputed that when he testified before congress in july. It was in no way unequivocally any suggestion that me, the fbi, would take any action whatsoever to improperly impact the electoral process for any candidate. The suggestion that i and some dark chambers somewhat in the fbi would somehow cast aside all of these procedures and somehow be able to do this is astounding to me. Despite that, the fbis office of professional responsibility concluded strzok should be punished. But on friday, the fbis Deputy Director overruled that recommendation and fired strzok. On monday, his lawyer went on msnbc and accused the feds of playing politics. Its difficult to believe, given the steady drum beat of demonizing beats and calls for him to be fired. The president has been singling out strzok, tweeting about him more than two dozen times. Including twice after he was fired on monday and twice just a few minutes ago. The fbi has not commented on why strzok was fired instead of demoted. But even some democrats are saying it was the right move. Fbis peter strzok fired. Yes, i would have fired him too. You should. He has rights as an employee. Those should be exhausted. I also believe with the stakes this high, a president ial candidate, you cant take that way. Even if it didnt affect the investigation. And the Inspector General report said it didnt. I still think it has to be clear you cant do that. I want to bring in one of my faves, former federal prosecutor glen kearsener. Doesnt this set a precedent . Thats important. I think well spend time trying to unravel whats behind this firing. When i was a federal prosecutor, i supervised 30 other federal prosecutors and i found myself in this exact same position. Opr conducted an investigation of something one of our prosecutors did.
