We will give them a oneyear warning, if that doesnt stop the drugs, we close the border. We begin with the potential booster shot for the economy. New jobs jobs and new hopes for a trade deal with china have the dow within a shouting distance of a new alltime high. I have a great team here, first we start with the jobs report. It just came out about 30 minutes ago. Analysts were expecting a big number. Heres the good news, they got it. 196,000 jobs were added in march, thats higher than expected. Jobs numbers in january and february were revised upwards, the Unemployment Rate was unchanged at 3. 8 . Thats full employment. The issue is wages. They went up, too. So far markets are loving it. Indicators are all in the green ahead of the opening bell. And more good news couldible on the way. On thursday, President Trump said that the u. S. And china are close to a massive trade deal. A ninth round of talks begins today hours after the president met with with the chinese vice premiere. President xi jinping said the two countries already made new and substantive progress involving economic and trade agreements and he said he hopes a deal would be finalized as soon as possible but theres some major sticking points including how and when to reduce tariffs, how to protect intellectual property and how to enforce the deal. The president said many of the toughest issues have been resolved. We have never done a deal like this with china. Its a unique set of circumstances. Its a massive deal. Could be one of the i guess it is if you think about it the biggest deal ever made. No matter where you look there cant be a deal like this. This is the granddaddy of them all. Lets see if it happens. I think it will be great for both countries. It was two days before the midterms that the president came out and said we have a deal with china coming. Two hours later his own administration had to walk that back. I certainly hope were close to a deal. Lets bring the panel in. Its a great one. Brennan greeley. Ron insana. Doug thornell. And my friend, noel mcpore, who i have not seen for ages. Ron insana, to you first. Yesterday cnbc put out a report that said this jobs report is massively important. It will tell us where the economy is. This is a giant big, beautiful number. Today, this friday. Last friday larry kudlow was calling for rate cuts. Pick your poison. This is a real issue. Theres cognitive dissidence in the White House Economic Team with respect to where the economy is. The president has been praising this as the strongest economy in the history of the United States. Thats not an environment in which you would lower Interest Rates, fear deflation or a sudden recession. The economy still looks good. Jobless claims are at a 50year low. Those came out yesterday. 2,000 new claims last week. Theres no need for a rate cut. The fed was wise to pause given what happened in the fourth quarter. The u. S. Is outperforming by almost every metric. So we dont need rate cuts. The white house should be taking a victory lap without clouding the picture by saying we need more rate cuts. Dr. Greel ey . I find myself in the unaccustomed position of agreeing with the president. I dont think we need rate cuts. I think the fed could have waited longer. The longer the expension goes, the more you get people who were not in the labor force back in. The more you get them in the habit of working and trained to work. I didnt understand last year why the fed felt it was necessary to raise rates. I think central bankers genuinely believe in their hearts that a rate cut is a defeat, a rate hike is a victory. The job market now is extraordinary. We can talk about reasons why that is, we can talk about the increase in federal spending. Fracking. I would not have expected growth to go for this long. The real question is wage growth. Its not yet where it was at the top of the last expansion. Thats not a trump thing. Thats the economy has changed thing. When we get to 4 , 4. 2 wage growth, thats when we will think okay, were back to where things were before. You brought up a good point. The economy has changed things. The haves and havenots are an entirely different issue. For us to sit here and say the economy is beautiful, the economy is beautiful for a portion of this country, not the entire country. Its that portion of the country thats not being addressed. Lets bring in peter alexander. The president said were close on finalizing talks with china. He has said that before. The media is more of President Trumps jam than intel briefings are. What facts do we have to make us believe this . The president s jam, thats like just go with it. We were appreciating your delivery. There you go. I was also sniffling, not smirking. I have no jam for you this morning except yesterday we heard from him. Some were afraid the president would announce there was going to be a summit, that the trade deal would be nearing completion and sitting down with xi jinping. That didnt happen yesterday. Allies were concerned that had the president done so, he would have been surrendering the leverage he had on this. The president saying he will kick this down further. The chinese vice premiere, special trade envoy is in washington this week. Thats why the president was touting the likelihood of this epic trade agreement here. Theres some places where they have come to resolution, as it relates to intellectual property, theft. Marco rubio said the president promised a good deal, then a great deal. Its only a great deal if theres strict enforcement matters. So a lot of work needs to be completed before the white house can roll out anything. Ron, what would a massive trade deal look like . Kudos for thaking this he for t. Its a difficult thing. We all agree that intellectual property is an issue that the u. S. Has been tackling for years. Theres some indications that the draft language in chinese was different than in english. So its that type of work that needs to be done to make sure the interpretation of any agreement is the same on both sides. What deal would work for the u. S. Economies and chinese economies . I think the word deal is a favorite word of the president s, but its the wrong word. Robert lighthizer has said to congress that he doesnt want a soybean solution. Which means . That china is agreeing to buy a ton of products like oil, liquid natural gas, soybeans. Basics. Yeah. Theyre not agreeing to buy electric cars, Machine Tooling products. This is what we want to make in the future, what we are making now. This is where china wants to go. If they buy our soybeans, we have not solved the future relationship where we want to make electric cars, they want to make electric cars. But his base will think the deal is successful. The base will say weve done the deal. Heres the photoop. Once again another win for trump. Another win for the administration. Im not a political analyst. I can tell you more soybean purchases will not cut it. I would say more liquefied natural gas purchases would. One thing about the fracking revolution, we are the largest producer of natural gas in the world. Surpassing russia two years ago. This is a big export opportunity. The Fracking Community is adding jobs. I think youre hitting on an extraordinary point. If he does the deal, even if its a photo opportunity and it doesnt actually deliver for his base, they see the photoop, they check it off and they say you have the deal done. But you deal with highend major republican donors every day. If we see the market hit another top, we know they like deregulation and the tax cut, will the president then expand his base with a whole bunch of rich people who didnt vote for him last time and then maintaining his base by checking off saying i did it again. Another campaign promise. If the economy is rolling like this, why wouldnt they give to the super pac and the Reelection Campaign . Why not keep lending support. They may not like him personally, but if you have these numbers, why wouldnt you . Whats the alternative. If the message of some of the democrats is eat the rich, why would you do that . Why would you hold your pocketbook and say, eh, im not going to do it. Because maybe the president s base or the lower end of the economy would wake up and say hold on a second. This is the rich getting rich, the poor getting poor. But they have jobs. When we talk about the new economy, the quality of jobs matters. Can you get 40 predictable hours a week . Thats something that in this job environment people in retail cant get. The answer to your question is in pen and ohio and some states that voted for trump and never voted republican in their life. He has his base, 35 , 40 , 42 . That hes not delivering for economically. Thats right. You can look at his tax bill that he passed, they branded it as a middle class tax cut. It wasnt it was a big giveaway to the super rich. They created more jobs. But not really. One thing about the job situation, the president inherited a strong economy. There was 70 plus months of private sector job growth. The idea that he inherited a sinking ship. There was no turnaround. President obama turned around an economy. President trump was delivered a strong economy. We did not see numbers like this we did. Growth was equal if not greater than what were seeing under this president. I have a clear answer on jobs and the tax cuts. The mechanism by through which companies are creating new jobs, whatever the dynamic is creating that amazing job market, its not the job market. Its all about the voters, elections, and do your policies work. His base thinks the policies work. He will be reelected on what they view as a success. If democrats dont show up and say lets look at if these policies work. Because the fact of the matter is they havent. When he stood on the podium if they have a job but they cant afford the regular cost of living Consumer Spending is through the roof. You can look at any poll out there, people have deep concerns and anxiety about the future. How will they pay for college . How will they retire . They wont vote for a candidate on free college only. I think the other issue is his trade policies with china have done real damage. So a lot of people issues need to be addressed. We have not addressed ip. We had a huge giveaway to farmers. There are other ways to address this if we joined the transpacific partnership, which trump backed you the of immediately upon taking office. If we had done other things with our allies. We have to take a quick break. Coming up, democrats are now turning up the heat to try to get the full Mueller Report released taking direct aim at the attorney general. Calling him an agent of the president. And President Trump issuing a new warning, a different one to mexico after backing down from his threat to shut down the southern border. Seth meyers explains what the president is planning to do now. Im glad he knows. President trump today threatened to place a tariff on cars being imported from mexico. House democrats led by jerry nadler are ramping up their attacks on the Justice Department in an effort to obtain the full Mueller Report. Yesterday nadler suggested the attorney general, william barr, is putting the best interest of president over the best interest of the country. Ive said that barr is an agent of the president. Sessions was fired because he wouldnt protect the president personally. Comey was fired because he wouldnt protect the president personally. The president said who is going to protect me personally not look out for tint of the country in particular and they found barr. His comments came in response to reports from multiple news outlets including nbc that some members of muellers own team about how barr portrayed the evidence against President Trump. New york sometimes also detailed that muellers team wrote a number of their own summaries of the report, summaries that were not included in the march 24th letter to congress. Congressman nadler wrote to the attorney general demanding the release of the summaries saying you already provided an interpretation of the special counsels conclusions in a fashion that a peer appears to minimizing the reports of the president. Releasing the summaries without delay would begin to allow the American People to judge the facts for themselves. Our guests join us now. Greg, i know this is easier said than done. I want to try to get out of politics and get into what is actually going to make a difference here. No surprise, very harsh words from congressman nadler calling bill barr essentially the president s own roy cohn. Yes, we know nadler will go after barr, but what will actually make a difference here . I dont believe the attorney general is acting improperly, acting in an effort to protect the president rather than acting to protect the special counsels investigation. With that march 24th letter he seemed to create the confusion that is giving life to this theory that the democrats are seizing upon. And so i think the only way at this point that the department can get back on the right track is to release the report, albeit with necessary redactions. Then the attorney general and special counsel will both have to testify before congress, explain not only the investigation and the report, but also the confusion that has led to democrats and others wondering what the attorney generals real motivations are. Obviously redacting Sensitive Information is massively important. More important than a deadline set by jerry nadler. Whats the most important thing to get out here . The most important thing is to get a full picture to congress and then to the American People, so that we can assess what our president and what our administration has been up to. The one thing that really troubles me about this whole redaction dance that bar is doing is it looks like hes trying to hide behind grand jury secrecy. Grand jury secrecy is huge. We put victims and witnesses in the grand jury, and we promise that this will be confidential which is to encourage them to tell the truth about difficult matters. However we regularly release grand jury material in the Public Interest. Heres how. For example, we are investigate investigating a Police Officer for misconduct or excessive force, we put everybody in the grand jury, and we cant quite get enough evidence to charge. You know what we do . We go to the chief judge, we say will you please give us the authority to release this in the Public Interest . We need to be transparent and we need the public to be confident in the work we do. If ever there was a need for the public to have confidence in the work bob mueller has done, its now. Its at its scene nzenith. What does bill barr have to do . We can give our opinions about what we think is the right thing to do, and what jerry nadler wants. What will happen . What is bill bar obligated to do . Under the relevant regulation governing this special counsels work, hes not obligated to do anything more. But what he needs to do is to quickly get as much of the mueller findings in front of congress as is possible. Thats the only way hes going to beat back this idea that, a, hes protecting the president , and, b, theres daylight between the a. G. And the special counsel, which is a bad place for the department to be. Let me agree with some of the things glenn just said and go further. I think the president is unique in that he on one hand he can take advantage of the prevailing opinions from the dojs office of Legal Counsel that a sitting president cannot be charged with a federal crime. Because he can take advantage of that and not be prosecuted, it seems he cant prevented the congress from getting information from an investigation to inform congress ability to decide whether or not impeachment proceedings are warranted . He cant have it both ways. Hes unique that he cant be prosecuted, but that means, i think, that Congress Gets information from the grand jury investigation that it wouldnt normally get. Frankly it wouldnt normally care about if it was you, me or glenn who was a target of the investigation. Lets talk about the president s taxes. House ways and means has reached out to the irs saying they want six years of taxes. Last night the former irs commissioner seemed to weigh in. Theres a lot of cases where it says treasury secretary, it means irs commissioner, but this is ultd matultimately a decisioe treasury secretary. We aint going to see those ta
