President s state tax returns. And America First or trump first . President trump walks out of an infrastructure meeting with democrats and right into a rose garden rant saying he wont work with democrats on anything until they stop investigating him. An american captured for joining the taliban after 9 11 is set for release from prison today despite Law Enforcement officials warning that he remains a committed jihadist. Breaking overnight a catastrophic tornado kills at least three people as it swept across missouri last night. We are joined from Jefferson City, missouri. Morgan, this is a dire situation for our friends in the midwest. Give us a sense of the storm and whats in store today . Reporter we saw the first images of that wedge funnel cloud that happened just before midnight in Jefferson City, we knew it would be bad, but daylight showing the truex tent of the damage. This warped piece of metal wrapped around this pole coming from koesz the street. The roof of a gas station ripped off. The governor says early warnings saved lives as the tornado made its way through town. We have a massive storm that is showcasing the power and one small example of that is right here inside this mini van. Of course, the windows all blown out. Getting not even a direct hit. Just a glancing blow by the storm. Look at this. A piece of wood jammed right into this very car. Now, as of right now weve checked in with health officials. They say 20 people have been injured by the storm. A lot of these people were still asleep in their beds when the storm hit just before midnight. In Jefferson City no confirmed deaths as a result of this tornado. Now, one of the saddest things weve heard so far is that another tornado struck joplin, missouri, south of Jefferson City, and three people died this that storm when it hit a suburb eight miles north of town eight years to the day after a tornado killed 261 people. As for the folks here in Jefferson City, the main priority right now staying out of these affected areas. We are surrounded by the damages. We take a look around. Signs blown out. We have a church just across the street. Were told theres damage inside and out. And you can see the massive tree in front just split in half. So the main concern, people staying out of these affected areas, and we still have power thats out, as you can see power lines are down in this community. But the good news to report right now is that no deaths confirmed as a result of this massive tornado. However, rescuers are still going door to door in the affected neighborhoods to make sure people arent trapped inside. Morgan, thank you so much. We have to turn to washington now. Any hopes that the president and congress could actually work on something for the American People appear to have gone out the window. Lets go to hans nickels at the white house and Kelly Odonnell on capitol hill. Hans, what is President Trumps strategy here . Can he really take his toys and go back inside for an entire election season . The white house seems to think so. The strategy appears to be to run against congress and china and rail against Congressional Democrats at any moment. Theres some important caveats to the strategy. Talking to Administration Officials over the last 48 hours its clear the president feels aggrieved. They also want to have a little bit of room for some sort of safety valve. That is staff level conversations. Just talked to sarah sanders. Shes clear staff level conversations will continue on important issues like the debt ceiling. The president clearly feels wronged here. The line i keep hearing from officials inside is that nancy pelosi essentially accused donald trump of committing a crime and after he did that under the prep School Ethics of this president , he basically wants nancy pelosi to take it back. Reminder. It was just yesterday Steve Mnuchin asked to have that debt ceiling raised. Kelly, lets talk chuck schumer. He was on morning joe this morning. While he doesnt seem to have any hope for the president changing his tune, he hopes republicans might. Listen to this. If this continues, and if he becomes so unable to get things done, they may realize their political fate is tied to his and start working with us even when trump will say no and pound the table and do all the other stuff he does. Wow. If he continues on this path, republicans wont be able to get anything done. Do you think they could realize their political fate could be tied to this . I think thats possible, but its always judged district by district, state by state. There is a walk and chew gum moment happening where there are the appropriators responsible for budget items working behind the scenes. Theyve been working for days trying to line up a plan that would deal with things like disaster aid and funding for various critical budgets including immigration related policy, funding for migrant s s services and so forth. They arent at a deal yet. Weve been talking with sources and theyve been working on that. This is democrats and republicans working on something together when we have our colleagues covering real life disasters like in missouri and those that happened before, where tornadoes and hurricanes have wreaked havoc, there are some real work items on the agenda that are at least getting some attention. That can operate almost in its own orbit compared to what the president is talking about. The president who often goes in a news cycle splash of attention and sort of his own agenda. That was yesterday in many ways. And what happens from here forward will be a test for certainly republicans but democrats as well. So i think its important for our viewers to hear there is some work proceeding on important business, but clearly this is an area of real tension between the white house and capitol hill. And there will be pressure on republicans to some degree, but also some cover for the president because there are republicans here who believe that democrats are overreaching. No doubt. Hans nickels, Kelly Odonnell, thank you. If youre looking for clues as to why the president was fired up yesterday, this might be one. Another employee to blow to President Trumps attempt to block the release of his own financial records. A judge said they can hand over his financial records to lawmakers. I need to remind you Deutsche Bank was the only mainstream lender who continued to work with mr. Trump, lending him more than 2 billion before he became president , and trump still owed 300 million to them when he took office. Lets bring in our intelligence reporter, ken. Ken, not once but twice. This is the second time this week that a judge has ruled in favor of congress in their effort to get President Trumps records. Where does the fight go now . This young, it wasnt even close. Thats right. It goes to an Appeals Court in all likelihood. But according to the judge, and according to many legal experts, donald trump is not any likely to be more successful there than he was at the District Court level. In both cases. This is not really a close call. Congress has broad Investigative Authority and the judge said these subpoenas were well within that Authority Even though they might cause harm to Donald Trumps family. There was an interesting quote from the judge. He said lots of people do things. They hide assets. They put their relatives in charge. This is about potential money laundering. And it comes days after the New York Times reported that some people at Deutsche Bank were flagging what they thought were suspicious transactions on the part of trump and Jared Kushner and the bank didnt file the reports of the treasury. This is a fruitful inquiry. Donald trumps finances have been a mystery for decades, and it looks like were closer to piercing that veil. Lets head to the third ring. Michael avenatti charged with stealing 300 grand from his exclient, stormy daniels. The trial is set for august. Whats going on here . Wow. This is the third set of serious criminal charges filed by the federal government against Michael Avenatti. This is really some bad karma here. The only reason we have ever heard of Michael Avenatti is because he was representing stephanie clifford, stormy daniels, and it led to the unraveling of this hush money scheme involving michael cone. He implicated donald trump the candidate. Thats why Michael Avenatti is famous. Now hes charged with stealing 300,000 from his client, stormy daniels. And the lawyer client relationship is the most sacred secular relationship we have. The idea he proclaims his innocence against these charges and in new york and l. A. If hes convicted, theyll bury him. Its decades in prison. No doubt. Thank you so much. You bet. You another serious story. An american captured while fighting with the Afghan Taliban two months after 9 11 attacks is set to be released from federal prison. You know him, Johnnie Walker lind. More commonly known as the american taliban was sentenced to 20 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to supporting extremist militants. He served a total of 17 of the 20 years. There are still concerns he holds extremist beliefs to this day. Richard engel joins me now. If he still has these beliefs, if authorities are concerned, why are they letting him out early . Thats a question that some u. S. Officials particularly in the Trump Administration are asking right now. Mike pompeo, secretary of state just raised that a short while ago asking why it was that officials decided to let him out on Good Behavior when there are numerous reports including letters that he has written indicating that he is still a supporter of violent extremism. Supported extremist groups including isis, but the prison officials did decide to let him out, and hes expected hes expected to be out now. And he will be closely monitored. But his story is also a fascinating one. If you look back at how he ended up behind bars, how he ended up with the taliban, hes almost a story of the 9 11 era. Here is a young guy who converted to islam, moved over to the middle east, went to yemen, learned arabic, fell in with extremists and crosses over into afghanistan before 9 11. Joins up with the taliban which was working in ka hoots with al qaeda, and then compounding a terrible decision, while hes there al qaeda launches 9 11 which triggers the war. American forces arrive. They arrest him. They put him in a prison. Hes interrogated by a cia officer. And then shortly after that interrogation, there was a prison revolt in the facility, and that cia officer mike span was killed. No indication at the american John Walker Lind was involved in the cia officers death, but the fact that he was in the , that he was interrogated and in afghanistan after 9 11 and then there was the prison revolt right after the interrogation made people upset and linked him to the death. And mike spans family are among the people questioning why hes being release first down he still harbors extremist ideas. And where will he go when hes released . What kind of surveillance . No passport. Hes expected to live according to his family in the virginia area. He had hoped to live in ireland because he applied to have an irish citizenship, but his physical movements will be controlled. Also hell have to let authorities know every time he wants to get any kind of mobile device or internet connected device. His communications will be monitored. So i think its fair to say he will have very strict controls put on what he says and what he does but you cant put people behind bars for what they think. Quickly for how long . How long will there be surveillance . Officially it is three years. But i suspect if there are these concerns and considering he has been such a high profile case, i think hell be under surveillance of some form probably for the rest of his life. All right. Richard engel, thank you so much. You know where were turning. 2020. Democratic candidates are embracing a 15 minimum wage for mcdonalds workers. Today many contenders are participating in protests joining workers on strike in an effort to push candidates to embrace unions as the best way to tackle inequality and fight racism. Joining me garrett haake. Yesterday i spoke to bill de blasio who said im the one for the working people. We hear this from candidates all day every day. Is this their way of showing it . Its part of it. All of these candidates want to be associated with the fight for a 15 min. Wage. Its one of the few issues where there is near unanimity in the field and its not hard to see why. This issue polls extremely well for democrats. You have this diversity of candidates today out supporting striking mcdonalds workers. The two of the senators, Bernie Sanders and cory booker both stuck here in d. C. With votes in the senate trying to find ways to participate via video conference. I have to tell you i spent most of last week covering Bernie Sanders. This is a big issue for him. This is one in which he puts down his own saying this is something he talked about four years ago. In the time since seven states have passed this. He takes some credit for elevating this in the conversation. But all of the democratic contenders want to be associated with this issue, and with the union push that comes with it. Support from unions will be critical for any of these people in this democratic field to breakthrough. Look at nevada. Very heavily union state for the democratic primary. And some of those later states in the democratic primary where Union Support will be critical. Garrett, thank you so much. Were on the road to miami. Just over one month from the first president ial debates of 2020 elections. Theyll be broadcast live against msnbc, nbc, and telemundo live and streamed. Stick around. Next well dig deeper on big stories today and what they mean today starting with President Trump. First america second. Two of the best reporters in washington will be here to explain how the president s decision to stop working with democrats could actually give them a reason to impeach him. Plus some 2020 candidates have been pushing the idea of free college. This one is interesting. One state, you might not have known this, has been doing it for years. How it works and whether it could be the model to follow nationwide. First, speaking of 2020, the tonight shows jimmy fallon digs into the latest poll numbers. How about this . Beto oroarke has fallen from third place to eighth. Now, beto is asking experts how to get back up to third. Meanwhile bill de blasio is asking beto how to get the eighth. The president says he will not work with democrats until they abandon their investigations and any talk of impeachment. Instead, he may have actually given them a new reason to seek impeachment. Joining the discussion today, the White House Reporter for the l. A. Times and our own jonathan allen. At the end of the day Many Americans want to get out of the weeds of the investigation and they just want a government actually functioning again. So why is it, explain why the white house believes its a good idea for the president to declare he wont even try to get anything done. I dont know that everybody in the white house believes that. In fact, i know for a fact that some people dont and some people advise the president against doing what he ended up doing yesterday. Hard to get him to do anything once his mind is made up as we know by now. But theres split opinion on this. The president and a lot of people around him do believe that this idea that they can go democrats into impeachment. Theres a belief that because they dont think he will be removed from office in the senate that if democrats go overboard in their words, and push for impeachment after the Mueller Investigation has concluded, trump will make the case that democrats want a redo. That democrats wont let anything go and they dont want to do the business of the American People and trump who ultimately sees everything through the lens of winning and losing believes that if hes not removed from office, he will have won that battle and it will make him stronger. That said, the shortsightedness of thinking that way and yet coming to the conclusion and saying out loud that because youre upset about the investigations youre not going to do anything else when it comes to governing, that seems shortsighted given that this is a president who wants to run on promises kept, on accomplishments. You have the possibility of infrastructure, something that would put a lot of people to work in repairing roads, bridges, building out broad band infrastructure, something
