MSNBCW MSNBC Live With Stephanie Ruhle August 5, 2019

In less than 30 seconds, nine people were dead and another 26 injured. We have reporters on the scene in both cities to bring us the latest. I want to go first to el paso. Morgan, the shooter was taken into custody and it is being looked at as a hate crime. What have we learned about the investigation . Reporter steph, good morning. Right now as the sun rises on this monday in el paso, this ongoing course taking two distinct paths. You have the Community Coming together in healing but the investigation into the alleged gunman going very deep and it is an investigation spanning hundreds of miles. We do know he was taken into custody without incident just outside the walmart behind my shoulder after police say he killed 20 people inside and wounded 26 others. When we pressed for specifics they said that they did not Exchange Gunfire with the gunman. He surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody here in el paso telling us that he underwent questioning for hours yesterday but not elaborating on exactly what he said as it relates to this crime. One of the key points of this investigation Going Forward is going to be about a 2300word essay that was posted online about a half hour before the shooting took place, steph. It was posted to an online forum called achant and weve learned from the site that hosts that social media forum of sorts that it will no longer be allowing a chant to exist in the future. Were waiting to hear specific details. This was a social media like forum where this hatefilled rhetoric was allowed to exist for sometime now. So as it stands right now, that suspect remaining in custody. Meanwhile, fbi searching his home in dallas in hopes of strengthening their case Going Forward on both state and federal charges. Steph . All right. I want to go now to Chris Jansing also in el paso where she attended a vigil for the victims last night. Chris, seven years ago, you were at vigils in newtown, connecticut after kindergarteners were shot and killed. Last year, last november, you were in l. A. After the borderline shooting for similar vigils and last night there you were with victims families in el paso. What stood out for you . Reporter i think the sheer size of it was so moving. Thousands and thousands of people, stephanie, came out in the oppressive heat. Some of them showed up an hour before it was even scheduled to begin. They were holding hands. They had their arms around each other. They were leaving messages of hope. There was a lot of tears that were shed as well. And i think once again we see a community that felt the need to come together in the face of grief but, also, in a show of unity at a time when people who could do something about this, members of congress, remained divided. The other thing that stood out to me was the sheer shock. This is a Community Though a lot of people look at it as the epicenter of the immigration debate, there is no debate here. These are people who freely go across the border, people who love each other, people who are proud to have come here and built a life here. It all came into sharp focus much as it did at so many of the other vigils with teenagers. Three girls in high school who i spoke to who talked about the grief and the sheer despair that they were feeling. Take a listen. Are you afraid . Yes. Very. Im having to realize that racism is so alive and strong that people are willing to kill us for it and write full manifestos against because of our nationality of all things is terrifying. Like i never had to come to terms with my own mortality for being hispanic. How old are you . Im 17. And youre worried about your own mortality . Yes. Reading that manifesto opened your eyes. People really think of us like that. They think of us as monsters, as something that shouldnt even be alive. Reporter teenage girls who are coming to the realization that there are people that just because of the color of their skin or where their parents came from, that they are thought of as monsters. They did not want to talk politics but they told me, stephanie, that just last week in school two of the three are already back in school, they were talking about gun control. They never thought it would get so personal, steph. As i said, it wasnt the only shooting this weekend. Lets go now to dayton, ohio, the scene of saturday nights mass shooting. Where are we with the details on the investigation . Reporter steph, good morning to you. We certainly have learned a lot of information over the last 24 hours and i have to say a lot of us journalists out here have been thoroughly impressed by the updates weve been receiving every couple hours. I can bring you up to speed as far as the timeline goes. The first shots were fired around 1 05 a. M. Sunday morning and it took just 30 seconds for officers, six officers that were in this area to eventually corner the suspect and kill the gunman. We were told that the gunman came equipped with body armor, a large rifle, extra magazines, also had his face concealed. And i was told that if he actually made it into this bar behind me, this could have been even more catastrophic. As you know, the death toll is at nine victims. 27 injured. As far as a motive we still dont know exactly what motivated this individual to do what he did but we do want to point out that Officials Say that the sister was one of the victims. She was actually in the vehicle when they arrived together before they separated. Were supposed to get another update later this afternoon and of course will be following the story and bring you any new information, steph. Thanks so much. Morgan chesky, Chris Jansing, and kathy park. I want to stay in dayton, ohio, because the First Responders got to the shooter in 24 seconds. But even so, he was able to kill nine people and injure dozens more. Earlier this morning on morning joe the mayor of dayton says, she thinks this is a major problem. As you see the footage, which is pretty heroic of our Police Officers running toward a gunman with this kind of weapon, i just cant understand why we would need anything like this on our streets. Which he obtained legally. I think thats the real question for us is, and for our police department, is why is this necessary . Joining me now someone who has been in the Dayton Community for years, speaking to residents this weekend in the wake of this awful shooting. Reporter for the Dayton Daily News amelia robinson. What has it been like on the ground there . How are people responding . Reporter its been terrible, but the thing is we live in this neighborhood, too, so we wanted to be here. We heard the gunshots from our house, which is about three blocks over in the oregon district neighborhood area. After we were sure that everything was calmed down, there wasnt a second shooter, we ran over here. The people of dayton have been going through a lot of tragedy lately, and we had 15 tornadoes just over memorial day. So this kind of compounds that. We are a very Strong Community. People showed that strength yesterday during the vigils that were held here in town. People want something done. But they also want to let everybody know that dayton is a Strong Community and that the city really does intend to fight back from this. You live as you said just three blocks away. Tell us more about what the community is like, specifically where the shooting took place. Reporter well, i know everybody who works down here. I cover entertainment for the newspaper and all our digital sites and tv station and radio station. The people here, this is like one community. This is the center, entertainment section of our town where everybody comes on the weekend to have dinner and party and just hang out. The day it happened there were a bunch of festivals around town. It was a beautiful day. A lot of people were out and about can enjoying summer. Then this happened to sort of put a huge damper on the night and on our lives that a lot of people just want to embrace each other and just keep moving forward and support the community and also reach out and be there for each other. You say we want to move forward and you said dayton is going to fight back. I know the whole entire community is in shock and in mourning. But guns and hunting are a very big part of culture in ohio. So are people there asking for action . Last night the chant was, do something, at the rally here. What is do something . The Neighborhood Association do something is people dont want to hear the same thoughts and prayers. That is not something that has gotten us anywhere with other shootings. So people want people to really step up and to take action. The government was here yesterday. The people really responded to what the mayor said. But the governor, they shouted him down, because weve heard this all before and people want change and people want action. One thing that happened is people say this couldnt happen here, but of course it could happen here. Were kind of arrogant to think it couldnt because it has happened in schools, and in churches, and in bars. For us to think it wouldnt happen in dayton was just a sign of gullibility and i think that is where a lot of people are. To realize this could happen here. This actually did happen here. Front page of the boston globe says, this is what we have become. Amelia robinson, thank you so much, joining us from dayton. Joining me now the executive director of the gun control advocacy group, guns down america, and author of guns down, how to defeat the nra and build a safer future with even fewer guns. Thank you so much for being here. As i said, you are a gun control advocate. But whats if you had to pinpoint it, what is the problem . Too much guns, too much hate, both . Well, it is a combination of hate, easy access to firearms equals tragedy. Thats the problem. And the fact that we have more guns in america than anywhere else in the world and they are so easy to get is the reason were seeing these deaths. This morning the new york post, a paper that is owned by the murdochs, very often leads right, leads with, a ban on all assault weapons. I mean, that would be massive. But we are seeing possibly a sign from the president where he tweeted, democrats and republicans must come together and get a strong background check. Do you think we could see either of these . He then goes on to say, if its paired with immigration reform, which im reading as, so hes hijacking a measure thats supported by 97 of americans, using it as a bargaining chip to continue to put forward the kind of racist policies that the el paso shooter was propagating through his actions. Thats incredibly disgusting. And i think, stephanie, that our senate champions, the senators who support background checks, who support gun reform, have to get back to d. C. , have to use the proforma session tomorrow morning at 9 00 a. M. In the senate, to try and force a conversation on passing the house passed background check bill that came to the senate about 158 days ago. The senate has done nothing on it. Where are our champions fighting . Showing us that they could fight. Showing a clear contrast between lawmakers who are actually going to do something to disarm terrorists and those who are still on vacation. Why havent they already . You and i both know this isnt the first, second, or even 20th shooting. If theres 97 support for background checks, why has there been inaction from government . We need to push them to do this. Why havent they . Well, they havent because the schedules are complicated and theyve already locked in their travel. No, i dont mean this week. I mean this 97 isnt new. Why hasnt government taken action. Well, i think it is two things. The power of the nra, political clout, the amount of money that the nra has given to lawmakers and, frankly, its the inability of our champions to fight with all it takes. Why havent there been filibusters on the house floor . Why havent there been holds on the senate floor on key legislation to force this debate . Look, you and i can go set ourselves on fire in front of Mitch Mcconnells house. Hes not going to do anything. Hes built his entire career on advancing the nras deadly agenda, right . Call me naive. We need the champions to do something. These tragedies that happened over the weekend, i cannot imagine the nra would ever want Something Like this to happen. Why wouldnt the nra say, you know what . Background checks would make us safer. Wouldnt that give the nra so much more support outside their core base . Theyve spent their entire existence telling people that even the smallest piece of gun reform is going to lead to confiscation. For two reasons. One, they want to keep the market open to help the gun industry sell more guns and, two, they want to increase their revenues and their dues and continue to buy really expensive suits i guess. Theyre not concerned about keeping us safe. That much is clear. Wayne lapierre and his suits dont matter to big business. We know the government is powerful but business is as well. Tom brokaw said it earlier. Walmart is america. Yes. Walmart is the largest employer in the United States. One of the largest sellers of assault style weapons. Could we see big business take action after the shooting in parkland we saw digs Sporting Goods say, we are not going to sell these type of weapons anymore. We know it hurt their bottom line. But they stood by it. Listen, walmart has such an Important Role to play here. And i think they can do three different things. One, i think they can announce were going to stop selling guns until we raise the standard of gun ownership in america. They have raised the age. The age to 21. Two, they can say were going to stop giving dollars to lawmakers who are backed by the nra. Thats going to be massive. And, three, were going to start investing in the communities that we serve and were going to start funding gun buybacks to get some of those guns off the street. Walmart is such a major player. They are so large that if they really decided to lean into this issue, we could see some real change. We should all call on walmart to do that. Lean into safety is what youre calling for. Lean into safety indeed. Igor, thank you so much for joining me and sharing your insights. Coming up we talked about it one second ago. The senate is out for summer. But it doesnt have to be. Democrats, are they putting enough pressure on Mitch Mcconnell to cancel the recess for a vote on gun control, enough pressure to actually make a difference . One of those Democratic Senators who also happens to be running for president , amy klobuchar, joins me next. Joins me next. The senate has left washington for an august recess but in the wake of two Mass Shootings a number of lawmakers are calling on majority leader Mitch Mcconnell to end that recess so they can vote on Gun Legislation. Specifically a background check bill that already passed the house. One of those lawmakers, minnesota senator and democratic president ial candidate, amy klobuchar, joins me now. Senator, thank you for joining me this morning. Thank you, stephanie. I want to start with President Trump, set to speak in less than an hour. He tweeted earlier teasing a possible deal on background checks, but at the same time tying it to immigration reform. What is your response to that . He has said this before on background checks. In fact, he said it to my face. I sat across from him after parkland in the white house where i advocated for background checks and other gun Safety Measures including assault weapon ban and closing the boyfriend loophole to help with Domestic Assault homicides. Every single time he said, yeah. Thats a good idea. Add that in. I counted nine times he said he wanted to do it. Then the next day he meets with the nra and he folds. Nothing happened. All we could get done was some School Safety funding. Nothing happened. So, yes, i am very cynical when he sends out a tweet like this. I think action would mean him calling Mitch Mcconnell on the phone, his party, Mitch Mcconnell does what he wants, and saying, lets have a vote on this. Get the senate open. Lets get this done. And we have not seen that kind of action. What do you specifically want the senate to do . Youve called for this emergency session. Lets say you show up in washington tomorrow. Lets say Mitch Mcconnell says, okay. Its game time. What do you want to happen . I would like us to pass the bill that came over from the house. There are actually two bills. Some got some republican support, and they are basically focused on the universal background checks, so we dont have to start the wheel and the process over again. We can just pass our bills similar to the bill by the way that we had before the senate that failed to get enough republican votes even though it had the votes of people like senator joe manchin, very conservative democrat. We would have the votes to get it done. That is the first thing. The second thing, i think
