Step of the way. So many of you decided that a middle class mayor and a veteran from the industrial midwest was the right choice to take on this president not in spite of that experience but because of it. The reason that we are going to win is that we are putting together an unprecedented multitygenerational, multiracial policemtical movem. As the winners try to bring the party together, the field did get smaller, two contenders dropped out of the race, andrew yang and michael bennet. And it was a tough night for joe biden and Elizabeth Warren, leaving with zero delegates. We have our road warriors spread across the state. We have shaquille bruster, following the Sanders Campaign for months. No doubt they sounded happy last night, how are they feeling this morning . Youre seeing sanders happy but his campaign was ecstatic. Lots of hugs and cheers as the race was projected. As his campaign is saying to me today, a win is a win. It was not easy for senator sanders despite him being the neighboring state senator, he invested a lot in this state. He spent more on the television airwaves than any other candidate with the exception of tom steyer, he had about 80 individual events in the state of New Hampshire. As one aid told me as they left iowa, they saw this race as essentially tied. Mayor pete was rising and surging in the polls but they think what helped them was the pete pile on, the collective effort with the other candidates going after pete, including Vice President biden and the debate performance from Amy Klobuchar, they felt thats what locked it in and helped senator sanders secure the victory in New Hampshire. Hes not going to nevada or South Carolina next. Instead hes setting his sights on super tuesday with North Carolina and texas. His team signaling hes in this for the long haul. Stephanie . I want to go to vaun hillyard, he has the latest on the buttigieg campaign. The former Mayors Campaign making moves in nevada after a strong showing. We have to remember Bernie Sanders may have taken it but he didnt run away with the delegates. Unlike republicans, these are not winner take all states. Mayor pete did very well. Reporter exactly. You know, shaq was mentioning the pile on that Pete Buttigieg endured and look how he turned out, not far behind Bernie Sanders. The former Vice President of the United States not only releasing a video essentially dismissing his tenure as mayor of south bend but going so far to suggest to the country it would be a risk to nominate him yet he almost beats Bernie Sanders in his own back yard. This is the moment the campaign has been waiting for. Its said for months that once they realize Pete Buttigieg could win, as he essentially did in iowa, nearly did in New Hampshire, he was a credible candidate to race. Hes headed to nevada this week. He has mainly fundraising stops there. This is a candidate who is obviously struggled when it comes to polling among communities of color. He has not seen strong poll numbers in nevada or South Carolina. This is the moment. The Campaign Said they needed to prove he can win and prove whats in his heart. This is what the next two weeks will look like. Craig melvin said it earlier, black and brown voters havent begun to cast their ballots. An important part of the voting base. Lets go to garrett haake. Huge night, it has been a huge week for senator klobuchar and she got a big fundraising bump overnight. Reporter thats right. The gloklobuchar campaign is excited to see the momentum is translating at the polls last night with a strong third place finish in New Hampshire, a state she hadnt spent as much time in as she had iowa. The campaign telling nbc news they raised 2. 5 million by the time the polls closed and midnight. They need that money, they need to introduce the senator in states like nevada and South Carolina. The campaign is spending at least a Million Dollars on television in nevada over the next week. They have about 30 staffers there now, that number expected to increase. The senator will be there on thursday, shes participating in a town hall event later that night on thursday night. The senator and the campaigners told me theyre trying to clear each hurdle as it gets in front of her. Just keep moving, just keep improving, just keep growing one state at a time. Can you do that in nevada, in South Carolina, but it gets more challenging as we get to the super tuesday states. This isnt exactly ncaa march madness but clearly she made it over a big hurdle last night. Lets go to ali have youvitali senator warren. This is her home turf. March madness doesnt sound the worst thing to the campaign, their theory is 98 of the delegates at play have not been awarded, those states havent voted yet. So theyre making a long haul pitch here. But the thing about that is, its not good to come in fourth place in your home state. They didnt win any delegates last night. Though she is still in third in terms of total delegates won overall, but their push is to keep moving down the calendar. We see them moving around where their tv ad dollars are, charting a path to the states theyre going to focus on once we hit super tuesday. But how Elizabeth Warren is running her campaign, they havent necessarily changed the theory of the case, grass roots is going to push this over. In the aftermath of her speech last night i had one operative say to me they hoped it was a kick in the butt to the Warren Campaign that they can change things up and this person was hoping that they would bring her back to being more of the fighter that we had seen earlier on in this race and also when she was first on the scene in the senate. Thats something people are hoping to see as we go forward in the race and how she moves down the differentiate herself. Lets turn to mike in North Carolina where former Vice President joe biden went last night before results came in. The former vp is all in on South Carolina, but does the campaign think thats enough to kick start the momentum . We saw the most recent poll and hes dropped in the last two weeks with africanamerican voters. Reporter the other candidates want to talk about momentum, joe biden wants to talk about math. He used his marks here in columbia, South Carolina not in New Hampshire where the rest of my road warrior squad is to speak as much to the media. He said that 99. 8 of latino voters have not had a chance to weigh in, obviously talking about nevada. He said 99. 9 of africanamerican voters havent had a chance to weigh in on this contest. Thats obviously a signal to his firewall here in South Carolina. He said the democratic constituen constituency, the most loyal is africanamerican voters, he said the party has often taken that granted, he promised he would not take them for granted. The big problem is going to be money. He has a fundraiser in new york schedule and make an appearance on the view. He needs to restock the war chest, have the resources to marshall the needs. We saw him on the attack last week talking about Bernie Sanders, mayor Pete Buttigieg. Last week we heard a lot about empathy from dr. Jill biden and his interactions with voters across the country. As people across the country are starting to do the delegate math this morning, theres a few crucial things to keep in mind, iowa and New Hampshire combined only have 65 delegates. A candidate needs 1991 to win the nomination. When you combine senator sanders and warrens support last night it makes up about 31 . So that means a majority are siding with the moderates. And those winners dont have a winner take all scenario, its entirely possible that neither senator sanders or any other candidate will hit the threshold before we get to the convention. Here to help us understand this trent gibson, eugene robinson, and tim miller. Tim, what do you think . Im not sure im with you on the analysis that were really looking at a contested convention at this point. I think the field is narrowing more than some of the losing candidates would like to think. Amy klobuchar, good night last night but reminds me of a candidate in 2012 that had a late surge in New Hampshire, jojon huntsman we got to third place, people were surprised, six days later he dropped out of the race. Its tough, the field narrows quick, money starts to dry up for the candidates. If you look at the field, you have bernie as a front runner with pete an astoundingly position to be an openly gay, alternative to bernie. Maybe Mike Bloomberg with his money and biden a second shot in South Carolina. That to me seems to be the field at this point. Eugene . I think it was an awful night for joe biden. Thats the first thing. I dont know that his South Carolina firewall necessarily will hold anymore. Well see. People really do like him down there. But South Carolina voters are pragmatic. If they see hes not doing well, he couldnt win or even place or even show in New Hampshire, hes going to lose some votes. I think that you know, the next really, really big Inflection Point is of course super tuesday. And not all of these candidates are going to have the money to compete nationwide. Bernie sanders has the money in the organization to do that. Pete buttigieg has a shot at getting it together. Amy klobuchar is strapped. Shes sort of living off the land at this point. And she doesnt have that long to get it together to put together a National Campaign with boots on the ground to run in huge states like california and texas. Much less the money to buy the Television Ads there. People are voting in california right now. Exactly. People are already voting. I was going to mention that. People are already voting. They have their ballots and theyre casting their votes. And what they have been seeing on television . Theyve been seeing ad after ad for Mike Bloomberg who has moved up in the polls. You know, money cant buy you love but it can buy you some support in these primaries and thats what its doing. I dont think well have a contested convention. Its no surprised takes more than two primaries to solve it all, but i think within the next month youre going to see the field narrow really substantially. She got enough of a lift to put more gas in her bus and shes making her way to the next state. Trent, you know New Hampshire better than any of us. Is the headline how good of a showing Bernie Sanders had or how bad a night Vice President biden and senator warren had. Its actually, my take away was that sanders support in some of the places he needed to do well wasnt quite as strong as 2016. Take plymouth, New Hampshire for example. He won with almost 80 of the vote in 2016 against Hillary Clinton. And this time around it was about half. Same is true for most of the college towns. Yes, its a different race. But you think liberals who were with sanders in 2016 would stick with him. There was towns i was surprised he didnt win. Towns barack obama won in 2008 and 2012. And then donald trump won in 2016. These were obama trump pivot areas and Pete Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar went after them. There was one significant one where almost every campaign had gone to multiple times and buttigieg won, which was surprising to me. I think that we in the media were so focussed on moderate lane. But voters dont really see it like that. I met voters at a Tulsi Gabbard event deciding if theyre voting for Bernie Sanders or donald trump. So i think theres still a long way to go here. Eugene . I definitely agree that voters dont buy our schematic of the liberal lane and the moderate lane. And i talk to people who were switching among candidates, who seem to us to be in different lanes. You know, we have to remember that people are picking not necessarily an ideology, but theyre picking a candidate. Theyre picking someone they want to be president. And theres a lot that goes into that. I do agree that, you know, Bernie Sanders won the state by 22 points last time around and Pete Buttigieg came within two points of him this time. And so, a win is a win, but it was certainly not a runaway win for sanders. And well see what sort of headwind or tailwind he runs into in nevada and South Carolina. I spoke to a lot of undecided moderate New Hampshire voters in the past five days and the attacks on mayor pete he doesnt have the experience, wasnt ready was definitely resonating with people i spoke to. If he was senator or congressman buttigieg would he run away with this . Probably would have won last night. The most interesting stat i saw which ties into what trent was bringing up was a Washington Post analysis that said of new voters that came in to the process pete won half of them. There was this theory that bernie was going to expand the e welcome or t elector electora electorate, but that wasnt the case. They went there for pete. I think had pete been a senator, had pete not had the pile on like shaq said in his report from biden, amy, bernie, i think he would have won last night. I dont want to take away. Sometimes we get into the math of this so quickly. It is crazy. My first president ial campaign, 2008, i was a closeted staff worker, pete was in the closet. Both candidates were against gay marriage, barack obama and john mccain. This was a decade ago. Now here we are, ten years later, pete gets a married, im married, a republican staffer, pete is winning the delegate race. A gay maried mayor from indiana is winning the delegate race. Thats astonishing. Theres been one president ial campaign where the candidates were for gay marriage and all of a sudden theres a gay married mayor winning the race. Im hoping pete can carry that momentum on. Were losing the analysis. We dont lose it on the show. Thats true. Historically, culturally, this is so important. Im glad you said that. Eugene, we havent been to states yet that look more like america, will that change. Theyre almost entirely white. How much is this game about to change . Its going to change a lot. Were going into the sort of heartland of the democratic base, really. Were going to hear from latino voters, africanamerican voters and right now we dont know what their temperature is in terms of this race. We know what the polling says, but that that polling changes once the voting starts. So this race, you know, 18 days from now, this race could look very different. And we could have another set of sort of winners and promising candidates that were talking about. Its just its hard to tell. Buttigieg, for example, has a problem in the polls with africanamerican voters. Now that he has done well in the first two primaries will that change when he gets to South Carolina . Itll be fascinating to see. Im pretty sure ill be talking to you in 18 days. Thank you all so much. Definitely made us better and smarter. Still ahead, exclusive reaction just in from the Bloomberg Campaign to the recently surfaced audio of the former mayor discussing stop and frisk.
