Any guy that can do a body slam, hes my kind when they go low, we go vote. This is the vote of your lifetime. We are doing much better than anyone thinks in a tough, tough match. Overperforming everywhere . You have madnew jersey. You have a candidate with a hung jury in a federal corruption trial. First, bob menendez has done a good job or new jersey. We are seeing a momentum surge among democrats and donald trump and republicans need to find something that fires us up. The threat of a caravan of migrants to steal your jobs is much more potent than brett kavanaugh. Remember, it is an election of the caravan. You know what im talking about. You know what im talking about. You would do it, too, if your daughter is facing to be raped. I understand that we need to protect our border and i am a republican and i believe that we need to have a very strict Border Security but you also have to understand that our neighbors are desperate. Twitter suspending a network of suspected bots pushing pro saudi talking points in the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Are you willing to disrupt the relationship with saudi arabia . I am because this is an issue of the United States standing up for human rights. Mr. President , do you believe Jamal Khashoggi is dead . It certainly looks that way to me. Its very sad. It certainly looks that way. All right. It is a great day in america. It certainly is. Why . Because we live in the worlds greatest democracy. Where in 18 days we will be able to vote in the Midterm Elections. President trump on the road campaigning for republican candidates. After a stop in montana last night, hes in arizona today trying to boost hopeful and incumbent republicans to bolster the gops majority in the senate and hes trying out a new catchphrase before the election. The choice could not be more clear. Democrats produce mobs. Republicans produce jobs. Boom. On the democratic side, new jersey senator corey booker was in South Carolina thursday trying to rally voters with a message of his own. We have to respond to them. Not just with our voices saying, hell no. We got to respond to them at the ballot box. And californias senator harris, another potential 2020 candidate, is also in South Carolina today working to counter the president s road trip. Meanwhile, former Vice President joe biden is heading to florida next week trying tos into gillum to the Governors Mansion and protect the bill Nelson Senate seat. Joining me now axios editor and steve kornacki. Okaydoke. Nick, i remember president obama in office and did a bit of campaigning and trump used to say why arent you doing your job in washington . Trump is in that seat and working overtime on the campaign trail. It is stunning how much he is pushing. Are democrats doing the same . Because its clear. The head of the Republican Party is donald trump. And you might think his message is nonsense or not. But im hearing and im seeing mobiles versus jobs all day long every day and i have a feeling thats going to be the case for the next 18 days. Absolutely. I mean, theres no understating that this is a big pivotal election and the president told folks we have talked to hed love to campaign six, seven days a week leading up to the election. He is probably three or four days over the next week or so and the white house has been telling us to focus very much on getting out the base. The way they explain it, migration, ms13, media and mueller. Sort of four things to definitely get republicans to the poll. Mueller is falling off the radar screen now lately but immigration, ms13, crime, the border, a key issue for donald trump and most motivated Republican Voters and hope to hit that over and over and over again in the days leading up to the midterm and a big issue for him. It was in 2016. It is again in 2018. Well, hes got sort of a twopart strategy for the base. You know, immigration which is not a top issue for most people in the country. Hes hitting it there. And for others, they like deregulation and they feel good about the economy. Steve, earlier today, nick just said republicans know its super important and democrats know its super important. Show me specifically where democrats do. Because this morning i showed the clip earlier, when you were speaking to Chuck Schumer, he said people are upset about corruption. And to your exact point, really . Well, you just gave bob menendez 3 million. Its clear donald trump is running the Republican Party. Whos in charge of the democratic side . Because if corruption is what theyre running on, is bob the right guy . Yeah. They dont like to talk about new jersey and bob menendez. Here when im on television, theres always time to talk about new jersey. Me, too. I spent plenty of fun years there. What democrats are saying this. In a certain type of district, place in this country, the best motivator right now is not anybody in the democratic side but donald trump. Its a reaction to trumps rhetoric, reaction to his presence. Those certain types of places tend to be the suburban areas, metropolitan areas. College educated. Theres been a string of polls this week, six or seven of them that have the democrats up high single dig Single Digits and double digits. So that Democratic Energy against trump is alive there. The question, though, is it alive like that outside of the districts . Is it matched outside of the districts by the republican intensity we have started to see and are we looking at situation of not democrats lose seats on election day but are there losses, gains contained in the suburban areas . Nick, are we getting an accurate picture . The outrage or that steve is talking about, it often causes people to stop talking about politics. There are people out there who could like the economy or like deregulation but if they say at a party they feel good about it someones going to say then you must be a racist, you must be a sexist. Is that depressing the energy but not necessarily changing votes . Because i wonder if its giving us a warped picture of how people are actually going to vote. Yeah. Thats a really interesting question. We had a survey that sort of looked at how the politics is being fought on the fringes. Theres like 14 of people sort of half evenly split of the right and left driving the conversation, driving all the noise on social media and the pollster we talked to had a great 67 of americans in the middle just exhausted by all of this but the key thing is exhausted majority. Turnout is lower and who decides the Midterm Election . That 14 on either side of the debate and i think the republicans very much say like thats 14 is very much motivated by President Trump and very much by the issues like immigration so i think the picture were looking at is like can the democratic issues be motivated in the suburban states and quickly in the senate is rural area where is the president is going this week. Those are the folks that might be involved in saving the senate on the trump issues. So, steve, the president last night gets out there and supports Greg Gianforte. Show that sound. Greg is smart. And by the way, never wrestle him. You understand . Never. Any guy that can do a body slam, hes my kind it hurt that he body slammed a reporter. I said, oh, this is terrible. Hes going to lose the election. I said, wait a minute. I know montana pretty well. I think it might help him and it did. Okay. We can put this on replay. He says something offense. We play it. Were outraged by it and the same people outraged by it and a year ago when the body slam happened and then Greg Gianforte was elected. Trump is white noise with im into it. Im white noise with thats outrageous and voters that want to live their best lives, be free and safe and secure, do they care . Thats what im interested in seeing. Besides the outraged set. Theres a big portion of sort of the red america i guess, the trump side, that likes that or maybe that likes what they see as the huffing and puffing of media in response and like that trump brings it out in the media but my question has been one of the reasons republican prospects improved for november is Donald TrumpsApproval Rating ticked up this month, month of october. This is one of the highest levels at his entire presidency. Mid40s. Not great by a standard but by trump standards about as good as its been and the level republicans think they can start to maybe compete to hang on to the house if he can hang on there. Remember. Hes not been doing necessarily this kind of inflammatory rhetoric in the last few weeks. If this becomes a big controversy or a couple more like this between now and election day, im not talking huge numbers but brings the Approval Rating from say 45 back down to 41 or 40 . And in terms of the implications for november, theres a very, very big difference between donald trump being at a 45 Approval Rating and donald trump being at a 40 Approval Rating. All right, nick. While the things the president could be saying are absurd, its flatout lies and he creates a swell of enthusiasm. Does the Democratic Party have a person that they should be putting out there right now across the country in a media blitz in the same fashion that donald trump is doing . Yeah. I think they should. And that person is who is that person . Its the president. I think if we look at midterm races are decided, it is the motivated type of voters. Not the big middle. The exhausted middle. Theyre decided by the people enthusiastic to the get to the polls and republicans are motivated by donald trump and democrat it is same. Donald trump has taken over the media spectrum. He is the center of the discussions and it is like even though he told the Associated Press he is not on the ballot he is a shadow over the ballot and republicans are driven by the support and the president is a boogieman that drives democrats to the polls. But people say they want all the time is a reasonable, pragmatic washington that is not gridlocked. They want bipartisanship. If what youre saying true, stev nick, i turn to steve, well end up with a hollowed out center. I talked about it in my book but theres a portion of the human beings hard wired a bit for tribalism and where trump is going at the democrats with such intensity and the democrats are pushing back okay. But heres where i want to push back. Were hard wired for tribalism but much of the accusations that President Trump is making or the characterizations of the democratic tribe simply arent true. Hes painting all democrats right now as these ultra progressive, anticapitalistic force which isnt the case. Right . You got guys like bob casey. There are loads of people running who are democrat who is are running on centrist platforms and while we might be hard wired for tribalism, the tribes that the president is describing arent reality. Well, but, this is nothing new in a certain way and emphasize the most extreme examples from your opponents camp and use the examples to try to motivate your side saying, see, you need to come out and oppose these folks. I think what trump has tapped into, what we saw him tap into in the rise in 2016 and part of the resiliency is reaction he brings out from democrats, from the media, from people, from groups and people who folks on the right have seen as a sort of enemy and viewed in a certain way trump as almost the bully whos fighting the people they feel bullied by. Nick, last point to you. Earlier today when Chuck Schumer was speaking to steve and mika he said america is tired of Political Correctness. Theres a difference between Political Correctness and being straightforward and decent at the same time. The president gets to now say im the one whos straight talking to you and not forcing you to call an easter egg a spring sphere but theres a difference with saying, you know what . Stop being so hyper sensitive and get real. I think that Strong Political rhetoric works. Paint in brad, extreme brushes and thats the approach you take to fire up voters to get to the polls. We sit around on television saying maybe theres a big Third Party Candidate to run from the center and save us all. Its not happened yet because those kinds of people dont vote. Not yet, nick. In 18 days everyone has the opportunity to vote. Yep. And maybe this will be a moment when the center will ride. Ill be watching. Thank you so much. Steve, see you again at 2 00 p. M. And sitting here. You guys will get a much better show in 45 minutes. Stick around. Next, President Trump says the gop is the party of jobs. Well break down see . Its called the truth. Well break down which party in power historically leads on job growth in this country. Not who leads on selling it. Who leads on doing it. The president , hes in for a surprise. Welcome back to velshi ruhle. The president rolled out a new line for his campaign at a rally last night. Democrats produce mobs. Republicans produce jobs. Thats really catchy, isnt it . Heres the thing. For facts sake. How do the two parties compare with job creation under each president . We have an analysis of democrats on the joint Economic Committee in congress comparing job growth under democratic and republican president s going back to truman and ending with obama. We have blue lines and see it right there. Blue lines are the democratic president s. Red lines for our republicans and for each a dotted line showing the average growth for republicans and democrats. On average, the rate of grab growth almost two and a half times faster under democratic administrations than with republican ones according to figures crunched from the department of labor. Looking at gross domestic product, you know it as gdp, growth, another growth metric to measure the strength of the economy, we can also see substantially better performance under democratic president s. Again, our dotted red and blue lines paint a clear picture. Real gdp grown about 1. 6 times fast we are a democrat in the white house than a republican. According to figures crunched from the department of commerce. Further more, a paper released by the Wilson School and department of economics at princeton concluded, quote, the u. S. Economy has performed better when the president of the United States is democrat than a republican. Almost regardless of how one measures performance. So sounds like democrats have a branding problem. Joining me now, cnbc editor at large john harlow and sahil kapur. Those are the numbers right there. I went through them. Yet, the president gets on the podium saying we create jobs. They create mobs and go beyond President Trump. If you ask the average american which party is most focused on jobs and the economy and business, theyre going to say republicans. Thats right. So, democrats do have the branding problem that you mentioned. Republicans on the other hand have a data problem and if you want to know who recognizes that, none other than President Trump. In 2004 when President Trump was interviewed on cnn he was asked, you know, trying to figure out his path in politics and asked do you think yourself as a republican or democrat . He said seems like the economy does better under democrats. Thats what the figures show and thats what the years since then have shown. Of course, president obama had a better record of net job creation than president bush. And thats simply the reality of the situation. In terms of the mobs not jobs, just remember the sub text of that is. In addition to the economic facts, the democrats are a diverse party. The republicans appeal to older whites and the mob thing is an attempt to alarm those voters about the prospect of nonwhites and imgranmigrants. I want to go back. The data is irrefutable. Yet to johns point, the republicans have it in term
