MSNBCW MSNBC Live With Velshi And Ruhle June 26, 2019

Live ahead this evening as they are hatwatching tonight as theye prepare for night two. Eight hours. Thats how far out we are on the first president ial debate 2020 election. Tonight, well witness the start of a pivotal moment. All eyes well be batwatching t two nights event. Right here on nbc and msnbc and telemundo. The entire country is watching. What happens during the debate could determine the next leader of the free world. Right now we are focusing on an event kickoff this evening with these ten contenders. Bill deblasio and Julian Castro and cory booker and beto orourke and Amy Klobachar and jay inslee and john delaney. What are you hearing on the ground and how are candidates getting ready for the big migni . Reporter the prep is done. Candidates are in the period where they are ready to take the stage. They actually been putting policy into real life application. Elizabeth warren this morning visiting the homestead facility outside of miami. Amy is going to be going there in a few hours giving this em a chance to highlight the crisis thats dominating the headline right now. It gives us a good sense of what we are hearing from the debate stage. There is an expectation that this is a first time that voters will hear directly from them in terms of folks who may not be in those primary states or may not tune into the 2020 race. Both of these campaigns and several others are looking to jam as much as their biography and their speech in. I imagine from Amy Klobachar, she released this plan for her first 100 days that includes more than 100 policy points she wants to get into. For Elizabeth Warren is policies and policies, prosecuting a case from her plan perspective. Shes working on getting that plan out so she can stay in the guidelines for the debate stage. Thats hard. I will see what that looks like. She writes very detailed policies. Ali, good to see you. I remember you will be some where else and i am surprised to see you in person. Good to see you. I do think speaking from kidnapp candidates, those policies from warren, well hear from boards how a boards others how are you going to pay for that . Lets bring in tim obrien, hes been covering the election since 1992 when bill clinton was in office. Tim, what are we going to see on the stage tonight, ten candidates running against one another o r trying to show the country they can run against and beat trump . Well, thats the central question, steph. I think voters already shown that they have a preference for a candidate. I think thats what it counts as we all know for Elizabeth Warren rise in the polls and beto orourke to climb. Candidates not only setting them off one another but sets them off ultimately from President Trump who never been a policy one. I think the other thing this moment allows all of us to do is pause for a minute and consider this rainbow of people who are going to be on this stage. Yes, it is a lot of candidates and a lot to sort through. It is easily the most diverse slate president ial candidates, i think the country ever had. I think it says something of the state of the Democratic Party right now. I think the other things th vot are looking for is emotional signaling. Who krcorresponds with . Are these candidates looking at this point so early on before the i, the voter to be the democratic voter. There is even a split there between those who would like the parties to be progressive or moderate. Is tonights appeal to the country . I think it has to be a little bit more to the i tonight. It is a democratic slate and they are appealing to a particular slice of voters who identifies democrats. I think they all know and swing voters are going to be the make or break of all this. All of these votes are going to have swing voters in mind as well. I think that gives back to some of healthcare and the economy and jobs and trade. When you get beyond most of the bread and butter thing, we dont have an Immigration Crisis on the southern border. We have a humanitarian crisis. Whats going on down there right now is a stain. I think on the reputation of the country and it will be interesting to see how some of these candidates choose to address things like that as well. When you think of Bernie Sanders on the stage tonight, Bernie Sanders and President Trump has over the next two days had similar messages of economic populi populism. They attracted many of the same voters. When you think of the messaging, whos going to lead that tie tonight . Is there a chance one of these democrats can pull from President Trumps base. When you look deep into the economy, you saw blue counties flipped to red for trump over the economy. He has not delivered for them. Can they flip back to blue and with whom . Well, i think they can flip back to blue. Bernie sanders and donald trump were two sides of the same coin in 2016. It was that long arm of the financial crisis that up ended peoples lives and race is an issue as well. To make both of those men appealing, the difference being the trump message was about fear of the other. And i think the sandseers messe was everyone should get a fair shot. I think that Elizabeth Warren has certainly observe a big portion of the sanders plan. And Kamala Harris talked about retraining programs for blue collar workers. So sure, i think there is ample opportunities. Tim obrien, thank you. It is an interesting question you asked. As tim says there is policies that is andrew yang has that may appeal to those same people who say i am left out economically. I went to trump because i thought he recognize it and going to do something about it. And those people saying it didnt change anything for me. That divide was the same when donald trump took office. When you think of that voter and you add joe biden to theics many, they would say, i have been suffering for years. For many are saying lets go back to the way things used to be. For many people, the used to be was not working and thats where you see a push for a generational change where you see Pete Buttigieg or beto orourke, it is time for mana r Something Different and things have not been working for you for years. It is interesting, i think you spoke to Pete Buttigieg. Yes, i did in fact. Hes not only running for the president. Hes the current mayor of south bend, india, i had to talk about the backlash hes getting in his own city since there has been racial tensions for years. A white Police Officer shot a black man in that town. I asked him should he be here in the debate stage given theyre in this crisis. Here is what he had to say. Your city is in crisis nearly two weeks ago, a white Police Officer shot a black man who was unarmed. Walk me through what the last two weeks has been like and really given whats going on at home, should you be skipping this debate . No. We have to be able to do many things at once but this is a moment when my community is in anguished and we have been on the ground working with Community Leaders and members, trying to make sure the facts can emerge but also recognizing that the anguish over what happened is not only about a family that lost a loved one but also this ties to a much bigger set of issues locally and nationally we have been dealing with. The feeling among black americans that they are being policed to death and making sure that we have a way forward on that. This is not just a policy question, this is a moral question. Yeah, currently polling at 1 with black voters as oppose to joe biden with 46 . Even if it is not a violent issue, you have poverty issue. You have had an economic turnarounds in your city. 40 of black people in south bend are dealing with poverty. It is a terrible inequality. I didnt create it but i have been working side by side with members of the community to address this. Why we taken so many steps to invest and under invested areas and try to deal with these crushing inequalities because you cant separate the role of race and poverty. Whats going on and for example, the rielationship of the black community, it is not always about justice. I want to pull out a photograph that a journalist captured of a father and his 23monthold daughter laying faced down in the banks of rio grande. That disturbing image is on our screen right now. What do you want to do . This is obviously the migrant situation, this is a dad whos trying to give his child a better life. What action do you want to take when you see that . There are no words. And this is supposed to be the greatest country in the world. The shocking thing is that part of what makes that possible is fear. As if we have something to be afraid of from a child fleeing violence. A child fleeing violence should have nothing to fear from the greatest country in the world. We have the fix this. Can you win those voters back who President Trump won when he says what do you have to lose . Lets turn the economy around for you. Thats why well have strong organizer labor and why we protect healthcare. Thats why we actually deliver things on paid family leave and set up a benefit system that keeps up with the reality of the economy of the 21st century. How are you go i think to pay for that . Thats the question for 2020. This is administration decided theyre going to go with this tax cut and you ask that question day after day. There is no answer. There was no answer. And engaging in things that cost money actually returning in investment, it is fair to say at least they are coming up with plans that may do something. That tax cut gave money back to people in company did not need it. There may be one question into the election, are you better off and depending on what that answer is, is that people going to vote. Well speak to andrew yankees and governor hickenlooper. You will see candidates walking through the stage and we saw jay inslee and now we got Amy Klobachar. This next story we are sharing is a horrific one. The image you are about to see is deeply disturbing. A father and his young daughter, there she is in her diaper found dead on the banks of the rio grande drowned while trying to escape poverty and starting a new life in america. The question is, that image, this this the moment thatll change the hearts and minds of the actions of your government leaders. You are watching velshi ruhle on msnbc. No, kevin. Awesome. Id rather not. Welcome back to velshi ruhle. We are about to talk about a story with images thats difficult to see. It is an important story that we must understand the human toll of the immigration policy thats advocated by President Trump. Here is the image on your screen right now. That is a 23monthold baby, a toddler with her arm around her dads neck, faced down and tucked inside his shirt. Theyre both dead. On a banks of the rio grande in mexico. They can see america. Both the father and the daughter with dark hair, you can see the little red shorts with her diaper peeking out. You can see her tiny shoes. These are not images, it is people with names and lives who are searching for a better life. According to the associate press, the familys journey began 12 weeks ago today in el salvador. The father whose name is Alberto Ramirez arrived with his small daughter and his wife at the u. S. Consulate in mexico on sunday. Legally presenting themselves for asylum. According to the new york times, oscar left his job at papa johns where 350 a month was all he had to provide for his family. When they presented themselves, they were told it would be several weeks before any asylum process could begin. The u. S. Policy has slow down asylum claim reducing the number of people or everyone permitted to request asylum everyday. This is not somebody, this is not what President Trump calls illegal. Frustrated and desperate according to interviews. Ramirez decided to cross the rio grande. It looks calm but it has a surface that hospitalized dangerous currents beneath. The heartbreaking part of this was the daughter was successfully taken over the river. Those small shoes reacting as my child may react, she jumped into the water after her father. As her mother watched in horror. The current get bbegan to take the girl. As night fell, the search called off and their bodies were found on monday. Shes tucked into oscars shirt, her small arm around his neck. Oscar was 25 years old. We just learned from oscars mother that she pleaded with him not to go. She said through tears that oscar loved his daughter very much and because of that love, she took his family to america. Jacob soboroff is here. Hes been covering this border crisis with us since the beginning. Jacob, this is this tells a different story. These are people who went there to seek asylum. Most people never get it and they get a hearing and they are turned away. It is shameful. We should all be ashamed and not just for this father and daughter and the survivor of the family. Every american should know. Thousands of people have died attempt attempting to cross the United States. I am not talking about 10 or 20 or the six children who died in the custody during the Trump Administration. I am talking about thousands of people have died trying to get to this country. In the deserts and arizona or in the middle of the night where they have rescues and so many people get stranded looking for help. The reason they cross this way because it is the easiest way to get in the country. As you guys stated perfectly it is because of the process of me me metering. When they came to present themselves, theyre told you cant come in until a week from now. Instead of sitting there and wait for a week, they said you got to get in now. The president argued that the policies, when obama was in office. Tell us what it was like now when you seek asylum, is it worse now than ever or is it better than before . All you got to do is drive five minutes past the border. Gabe gutierrez was on the bridge during the separation a year ago, most of us were all in south texas during this horrific separation policy. It continues today and people are sitting there basically pleading with Border Agents on a dai daily by the w daily basis, people writing numbers on their arms waiting to get into the country. Numbers of what . 1,000 in line in order to get into the country. Informal list kept by organizations, thats how disorganized this is. And thats what the Trump Administration wants. It has not always been this way. It has not always been this way. It is worse now than it is ever before and thats because the administration believes they can scare people away. It wont scare people. It does not stop people from coming to deterrence. It has never stopped people from coming. These are the most desperate people in the world going through one of the most dangerous countries, mexico, in order to have a better life. You dont make a trip of one of the dangerous countries in the world because it is a walk in central park. Lets discuss what would happen had they been granted the ability to claim asylum in the United States. I want to ask you about this specifically, when you claim asylum, you appear at some point before a magistrate and a judge and you require a record. You show up and they determine, agents on the front line determine if you have a credib credible screening. They are put in a process and they get accessed into Julia Ainsley and i just reported today which is the money is literally because congress has not agreed on a border funding deal literally is running out to pay for services for immigrant children who are in the custody for hhs. What about the bill that passed last night . They have to reconcile the two bills and the president has to sign it. In between now and when the president signs after the 4th of july recess, i cant state enough how important it is. Children in the custody of a federal government without access to free legal aide. A little child may appear before a judge without representation. You can have infants going before a judge by themselves without a lawyer which increases the chance of them being deported into the country. But hold on a second. If the president has been saying it is congress. Theyre the ones blocking it. Here is this 4. 5 billion and now it is sitting in the senate with the president , is it in the republicans hands . I would say absolutely no excuse to go on a recess through the 4th of july. We are talking about thousands of children at the Homestead Center in florida that may not have legal representation. Those facilities, there is no legal representation. 50 kids have no legal representations as i am talking to you. Lets share
