They were sent to two former president s. Here is what we know at this hour. The devices were sent or mailed. No one has claimed responsibility. Authorities are investigating if these are part of a coordinating attack. They have not determined a motive. The crimes implicated by the acts are quite severe. Conveying a threat to harm a former president is punishable by five years in prison using a bomb to carry out such a killing can carry a life sentence or the death penalty. Thus far none of these mailings resulted in a bomb detonating. An basexclosplosive device was n the mailbox of george soros. News broke of a similar package sent to the clintons. Then the secret service intercepted a package to former president obama in d. C. And then today cnn new york news room was evacuated after a pipe bomb addressed to former cia director john brennan was discovered delivered to cnn. What you see on the map there is what has been unfolding throughout the day. Then late today news broke about a suspicious package addressed to congresswoman maxine waters. The fbi investigating whether that is similar to these others. According to the fbi the package is sent to the president. Cnn and holder were in manila envelopes with computer printed addresses. The package described by new york citys police commissioner. Identified a device that appeared to be large device. It was an envelope containing white powder discovered as part of the original packaging and were in the middle of i ve investigating that now. Authorities have not released information about potential suspects or motives. While the targets appear political and this is the home stretch of the midterm elections. At this hour we cant report to you the kind of facts that would resolve whether that fits directly into what you see unfolding before your eyes. One of the targets, Hillary Clinton called for bringing the country together and President Trump called for coming together. We are fine thanks to the men and women of the secret service. Sit a troubling time, isnt it. Its a time of deep divisions and we have to do everything we can to bring our country together. Id like to begin providing updates on the suspiciissuesusp packages mailed to former and current government and high ranking officials. The safety of the American People is my highest and absolute priority. I want to tell you in these times we have to unify. We have to come together and send one very clear, strong, unmistakable message that acts or threats of Political Violence of any kind have no place in the United States of america. Whats the latest on your end and what is important for people to understand about these targets. In all that investigation to try to find out where they came from following two tracks, one is to analyze the explosives themselves that they have been found in tact and can be analyzed at the fbis lab and the other is to try to trace backwards. Some may have been delivered by hand or courier. It appears to be that of the one delivered to george soros. Those are two leads they can exploit. Try to trace movements and track the package themselves. The others that went through the mail that have postmarks to try to go back to the originating post office and see what they is track from there. They have no idea who sent these or what the motive was. They referred to it as a timer. What it was is to be determined. Although it may seek like the federal officials would know a lot more, what were told is they are just now beginning to get the in tact devices. The one monday was rendered safe which is sort of fancy police talk for they blew it up. These pictures are not from the devices. Those you saw, those elbow joints are not from the devices found today as far as i know. I think those pictures are from another bombing and it was for comparison to a pipe bomb. These are straight pipes with end caps filled with explosive powder and something attached to the side just barely fitting into these envelopes. The question is were they capable of going off and the fbi is just beginning to look at that now as they slowly and meticulously take these apart at the fbi lab outside washington. Pete williams, thank you very much for your reporting. I know you have a busy night ahead of you. Pete mentions the fbis approach. We have several fbi former officials including sean henry, former assistant fbi director for counter intelligence. Sean, to build on what Pete Williams was reporting, what does it look like to you and just from a very simple fbi goal, why did they release the photos the way they do . The fbi will be looking for help from the general public. Theres a lot of steps that will be taken in the course of this investigation. First of all, you have a lot of physical evidence. You have six or seven different packages where you may have some dna evidence, some fingerprints. You have the actual devices that may have signatures. Law enforcement may have seen these types of devices previously. You have an intelligence database that the secret service has been keeping. We have two former president s that were targeted here, received these packages and the secret service keeps a comprehensive database for many years. The general public may have information. Somebody knows something. These devices, in addition to the locations they were sent to, they were manufactured somewhere. There may be a neighbor or coworker who has over seen something, who may have over heard something. The public will be looked to to get help. Thats why they will get photos out to try to collect the int intelligence so people are aware if they see the devices, people will be able to avoid them. Frank. I think sean is right on the money. This will be an extensive investigation and every tool in the tool kit will be used here. Theres two questions aside from who did this that are paramount in my mind. The first is why didnt these detonate. If at least one live device was delivered to cnn headquarters, if thats true, we need to figure out whether thats the intent of the bomber to send a message and not have them detonate but to send a message i could do this but the second question thats paramount is is he going to do this again or have we seen everything hes got. I think were not done with him yet. Hes sent a message. Hes been successful in sending that message or feeling not successful because he hasnt detonated and hurt anyone. Well see more of this. Let me take part a few of the things youre saying. Youre referring casually to the suspect as a Single Person and as a he. Of course, what you mean is whoever this person or persons is, i assume. We got to be careful here. Im going with historical profiles of known male bombers. They tend to be male and gregarious. This person has chosen a distancing in his message. He doesnt want to confront directly. Youre using the theory its an individual. Weve seen some have spelling mistakes and dont seem to be all that effective in detonating at this point. Why dont you and sean walk us through the other theories. If you say theres more to come, more from this individual . Is it possible theres others involved . I think there is likely there will be more until somebody gets caught. These things typically go on until they are caught. I think whether or not theres multiple people or not is not clear. This is early on in the investigation. This is terrorism. Somebody who is using fear or the threat of violence for some political or social plemess andd make some type of change. You have a lot of people on heightened alert and fearful. I listen to some of the people who are victims talking about it. Clearly, they were impacted. Theres been an impact here. I want to be clear because were dealing with such serious stuff. It doesnt behoove you to overdue or hype this. Youre saying your security assessment based on the way these things were absent catching the individual its more like than not they would offend again . I think they will continue to go on. Thats what were seeing in many types of attacks when going back over many years. Franks talked about couple of the examples of other pipe bombs. Things that have gone on. Trying to continue to instill this sense of fear. With the evidence out now and the number of people focused on this, i think the investigators will start to turn up leads here in the not too distant future. Because its looking like a national priority. Stay with me. I want to add to this. Take a listen to the mayor of the new york who is speaking more as a politician than as a security expert in saying what john henry just said this looks like terrorism. What we saw was an effort to terrorize. Its clearly is an act of terror. Attempting to undermine our free press and leaders of this country through acts of violence. You cannot be terrorized if you refuse to allow the terrorists to win. Daryl put that into practical terms for us if people at home are hearing our expert say this could happen again and people were in and around all of these different targets. What does that mean . Thank you for having me on your show. Theres some things that stand out to me by some of the information thats been released so far. I must say were in the very preliminary stages of this investigation. Theres been enough information about the devices, the tactic thats used that could give us a bit of idea of who may be behind this in broad terms and why they did it. The first thing you need to look at is this cluster of targets that we have. These individuals, eric holder, george soros, john brennan, cnn and others. This is a whose who of trump opponents. I think the fact that we have multiple devices targeting multiple individuals on the democrat and liberal side of the political spectrum leans this is a politically motivated attempt. Most criminal bombings that we see target single individuals. The fact we have a cluster of bombs as well as the targets that were chosen, i think indicate a political motivation. The second thing is that the actual device themgselves, this is a typical operation of domestic as well as international terrorist. I dont think this is isis, thi they use bigger figures. Its been called fake news and a target for people to direct threats is is a good indication this person is a domestic home grown person with a political motivation. The last thing ill talk about one of your guests mentioned that, weve had as recently as january 2011 a series of package bombs that detonated at mail facilities that were also targeting democratic officials back in 2011. That person has never been ie identified or apprehendeapprehe. Daryl is right. What were talking about here is certainly enough components or enough elements to define this is a terrorist act. We have a politically inspired organization or individual thats targeted prominent officials from this Administration Im sorry from the previous administration. All democrats. Weve had an up tick in the last 14 months since charlottesville of organizations working together and being more overt in what they are doing. We are seeing lectures on College Campuses and recruitment efforts in the way of flyers. Were talking about package bombs here. Not very sophisticated. This is not the signature of organization. This is domestic. We have had a number of organizations become very aggressive with recruiting efforts in the United States over the last year. Having rallies and targeting people they think they can get on board. Were two weeks out from the mid ter midterms and i have to wonder is this going to expand. Are we going to see other attacks. How coordinated is this effort . How much of that relates to the targets which every one can understand from following the story. You have all of these people who are seen as opponents to the current president and how much of that relates to what is probably a little more of a detailed or sophisticated Law Enforcement analysis which is the explosives. The fact that we have these high profile targets, these political figures points to me of a political ideological motivation. Typically criminal bombings target a love triangle, an exlover, somebody in financial distress and usually targeting one person. The fact we have six devices targeting high profile political figures, this speaks of terrorism, specifically home grown. Do you agree with that . Absolutely. We have a coordinated effort here. They were all delivered at the same time. We may see a well be looking at the signature of this device. How is it built . Were they built by the same person or group . What are the components. Well be looking for similarlities in the investigation that goes onto see who made these. Let me go to zosean for the final thought and i guess the scariest. If an individual has this view and lay back, they are hard to catch. Very difficult. This will be a lot of resources to focus on this. It encompasses state and local agencies around the country. There will be people following up leads throughout the United States and will be working 24 sby 7 until they capture the individual or individuals spr l responsible the attacks. Its a moment and either were going to grab this moment and understand it for what it is. That its a very serious time and every Single Person should vote. I dont care whose side youre on.
