The hack started six to nine months ago and the Trump Administration<\/a> had no idea it was happening the entire time. Senator peters, thanks for joining us on this. This is astounding to say the least. I have to say. When this news brokeov over the weekend e weekend, it was shocking. How much information did they get and it blew into nine months of hacking the systems and were learning breaking news the energy department, the national Nuclear Security<\/a> administration has information hackers accessed the network as part of espion e espionage. What do you know about this that you can share . Well, what i can say is we have to learn a lot more but to your opening comments, its shocking. This is incredibly disturbing to have such a sophisticated breach that impacted so much of the federal government, the fact they can get into these systems and be there for a period of time. It will take time to get what is the extent of the breach and what information did they gather . Was their intent . We have to get to the bottom of this and do it quickly because what is at stake here. There is Different Levels<\/a> of close fa case classification of documents when it comes to the government. Do we have an idea what level of classification they were able to breach . I dont want to comment on that and were learning more about that. This is a say firophisticated b where cyber professionals wake up in the middle of the night and are worried. We can tell you that. We need a better sense what happened. Part of the action now is part of the department of Homeland Security<\/a>, which i am the Ranking Member<\/a> of the committee that oversees, they have a directive to stop any other attacks on the systems so its important for the government agaencies to be engaged with those activities and then basically then we have to set our threat hunters out. These are teams that will go out and get into the systems to get a sense if theyre still bad guys in there and get them out and then try to assess exactly what they did. So thats the process thats going on right now and its being under taken in an aggressive fashion. I mean, at this point, though, do they even know what they are looking for considering the fact the hackers were able to find a loophole and brech government documents . How do they stop something they dont even know what they are looking for or what it looks like . It was discovered. They know what it looks like. They have a directive how to stop access, which theyre hoping that every agency now implements. So thats being done and we do threat hunting. We know its there. Thats how it was discovered and once you know its there, you have to look for it in other places, which is what is happening now that its fairly wide spread throughout perhaps not just the federal government. Were also looking at indepersonind independent companies. This is a massive effort very well orchestrated and heavily resourced and as a true wakeup call as to the vulnerabilities we have in the systems. We have to do a whole lot more to protect the systems and ill just say that in addition to protecting systems as important as that is, we also have to have offensive capability and we have to punish folks engaged in this activity and once we know for sure who is behind it, we need to let these folks know this will not be tolerated and there will be consequences. Just quickly senator peters, some could argue that this is feasibly an active war. Well, certainly, it is an intrees into oi intrusion into the system in a forced manner. Well see what they were doing and what information they have but i dont in any way want to under state the seriousness of what we have seen transpired in our systems. If this was an issue, there is nothing to say he cant move next door to the mansion he has on the ocean. Okay. So feasibly, if the town counsel decided we have to abide by this agreement you made in the 90 das saying folks cant reside there past 90 days and you wont reside there, when he decided to convert it to a private club, he could move to his residence next door. The video itself is very troubling. And disturbing. Unfortunately incidents such as this occur too often. And it happens because you have governmental agencies and individual operating on behalf of the government who seem to lack a sense of humanity. And understanding of the responsibilities entail. We can have discussions about Necessary Police<\/a> reform. Some included in the act. But with or without additional reform, professional policing must require and recognize a persons humanity is the basis for protection and preservation of human life. Absent that recognition of humanity you have incidents such as this. And tragedies that occur as a result of over aggressive. Military operating under the policing. Its time to stop. How do you change that . How do you make Police Officers<\/a> that sometimes in the videos seem to be rolling their eyes and ignore theyre in the situation. Looking away. Avoiding eye contact. One guy crossed in front of the camera trying to avoid eye contact with her. To address her as a woman a human being. Completely vulnerable in the situation. How do you change their situation . Sunlight is the best disinfectant. These incidents occur under the cover of darkness. This happened in february 2019. Its just now coming into the public sphere. Until we get to the point we have full and complete governmental transparency, these incidents will occur time and time again. Without even the opportunity to address them. We cant continue to be in denial about the dangers of over aggressive policing. The need of comprehensive over all reform and until we engage in that conversation and take the necessary actions, there are lives that are at jeopardy because of this color of Law Enforcement<\/a> that occurs across the nation. And specifically in communities of color. We cant ignore that reality. You well know Police Unions<\/a> wont support sunlight. They wont support complete and total transparency. And releasing this footage whenever it happens. Had they are e leased it had a year ago or so when it took place. They could have gotten ahead of the story and said we made a mistake. Whatever it is they want 20 stay. They have been hiding it and saying its under investigation. Not admitting they raided the wrong house.
