The fight against ebola and new questions about Health Officials handling the first case of ebola ever diagnosed in the United States. Thomas eric duncan died yesterday, days after being diagnosed with ebola. His fiance is calling for an investigation into why his symptoms were not picked up earlier. He arrived in the United States on september 20th and started feeling sick on the 24th. He went to the hospital on the 26th and sent home with antibiotics. Two days later he was admitted and isolated. The Dallas Church they attend held a memorial inviting extended family and health care workers. His family agreed to cremate his remains following strict protocols. Workers have to wear protective gear and wrap his body in three it layers of plastic. The centers for Disease Control are monitoring 48 people suspected of having some contact with him after he started showing symptoms. The cdc is focused on the people who had direct contact with duncan. That includes his fiance and her family who were in the apartment where he stayed. I am on pins and needles every day in dallas this week. The signs tell you this is critical and you want to get through the whole 21 days. Doctors are hoping a blood transfusion will boost them. He is getting a transfusion from the First American treated successfully. The doctor was released from the hospital in august and doctors hope the antis in his blood will kick start them. The United States will start screening passengers from ebolaaffected countries and that will start day after tomorrow. They will be the first of five airports to start saturday. Next week they will expand to dulles, ohare and newark airports. This morning, leaders of all three west african nations necessary washington, d. C. Asking the world bank for more Treatment Centers. They are asking for gear and funding is low. They said that needs to happen fast. Speed is the most important variable here. This is controllable and this was preventable. They have that 21day period before they are declared safe. They will monitor those people as well as the sheriffs deputy who was brought here out of what they discover as an abundance of caution after he fell ill with some of, but not all of the symptoms. He served a quarantine at the home and the apartment where duncan had stayed. Last night a very solemn memorial for duncan and a prayer service. His fiance and her family who are under isolation order at an undisclosed location were able to watch via video camera. A new nbc news survey conducted by survey monkey found 63 of americans are not worried about being exposed to ebola. 30 percent per are worried. Any reason to believe that this is something that is going to prevent ebola from spreading . Is this more about helping us feel good . I spoke to some Public Health experts yesterday and they said this is a feel Good Movement because so many of the public are concerned about people coming into the u. S. With ebola, the idea here is to calm down the public and make them worry less. Even if this screening does catch one or two possible ebola cases, it could be worthwhile and it adds another layer of screening. People are already screened when they are exiting. This means they are screened again before entering the u. S. To be clear, even in f this was something that was done when duncan entered the country, this would not have saved him, correct . Exactly. Thats why Public Health experts are skrept ceptical you cannot symptoms up to 21 days. This would not have caught him at customs and Border Patrol and miss many others potentially. Lets talk about nbc news and Online Survey conducted with survey monkey. People were asked if they know how ebola is passed from person to person. 10 still have no idea. They say through the air. 15 say contact with the skin. 72 said contact with fluids and 21 said they dont know. I found solace in the 72 . It seems as if education is working. No . I think it is, but its a scary disease and scary sounding. We are seeing the devastation. America is not west africa and the situation is different here, but it goes to show we cant say enough about education. We cant say enough how it is transmit and not transmitted. Until they have a fever and diarrhea and vomiting, they are not infectious. The fact is that in contrast to the lack of questions that we asked when we made a decision to get involved in the war in the middle east that will cost 10 billion a year, we team to have a different level of inspections with money that will protect the United States from a very real and very present threat of ebola. I think this week the committee released that money to get to work. Why do you think that is or what are your colleagues telling you about that is reluctant to release the money. I cant understand what the skepticism is right now. The fact is that yes, this is a big commitment to move thousands of troops into west africa. There legitimate questions about what they will be doing, but the reality is this is the kind of projection of American Power that congress should be supporting. This is where we can make a difference by standing up with Public Health infrastructure. Not only to help them, but prevent the disease from spreading throughout the continent and to the United States. This is where u. S. Military power and Public Health power can make a difference to the region into the world. 51 of folks we asked in the survey, 51 disapprove the sending troops to africa. What does that tell you . There is a general wariness about sending troops anywhere around the world. There is a legitimate concern about the United States being spread too thin. Again, we can do real good here. There will be a limited number of u. S. Personnel that are involved in direct contact with patients. Those will mostly be trained Public Health workers and they dont have facilities here. They need help constructing the Treatment Centers and screening centers. Thats where the troops can come into play. We have to do education about the difference between deploying a solder why west africa or syria or iraq. I think you will see the numbers increase. I want to ask you about the super service. Theres always the case of bringing another character into the mix so roberts can get attention off him, onto his opponent, trying to link greg orman, who is independent, but in the past has been more aligned with democrats, also has some views that might line up better with republicans, and one of the things thats so compelling about the race is voters have to decide what do they know about greg orman if voting for him.
