Shadow of the capital to press for gun control from a congress and president who were absent. Im here for every person who has died at the hands of gun violence. Ooicim here to acknowledge africanamerican girls whose stories dont make the front girls page of every national newspaper. Whose stories dont lead on the evening news. For me, i would like to not worry about dying and focus on math and science and playing basketball with my friends. I have a dream that enough is enough. This should be a gun free world. Period. We all got a purpose and we all want what . We want change. Fight for your lives before its someone elses job. Thank you. No matter what they tell you form there will be more of us telling the story of tonight the overarching message today, indifference is not an option. They told us to sit down and stay silent. Wait your turn. Welcome to the revolution. Stand for us or be ware. The voters are coming. His twin brother was shot and killed by a robber this past september. Im here to represent the hundreds and hundreds of thousands of students who live every day in constant paranoia and fear on their way to and from school. At this moment, please raise your hand if you have been affected by gun violence to honor the ones you have lost. Today i raise my hand in honor of my twin brother. Just like all of you, i have had enough. Twin brother. President trump let the day pass without commenting on the rallies. The white house did issue a statement praising the marches. Barack obama did weigh in and say michelle and i are so inspired by todays young people who made the marches happen. Keep at it. Youre leading us forward. Nothing can stand in the way of millions of voices calling for change. The student led rallies represent a water shed moment and a reenergized movement for gun control. Thank you. What did you see . What did you see around the mall . Reporter well, just listening to the replay of all those powerful speeches, whats was spritriking is seeing the fs of people their age, seeing an 11yearold, a 13yearold moving a crowd of 800,000 and knowing their voices could be heard too. After the rally, we had a conversation with some kids from newtown, connecticut. They were talking to us about whats going to happen going forward. I asked them the same question i asked a lot of people today and whats making this march difference. What will we see change . The biggest change is they have learned. They know what to do now. One girl describing growing up after sandy hook and remembering seeing all the teddy bears and the tv cameras and feeling overwhelmed and mourning. Her mother just pulling over and breaking down and crying and then after that, more school shootings, more school shootings. Each one of those shootings these kids have been learning how things work. They know how to focus the message with the media. They know how to defend themselves against people online just spreading conspiracy theories, trolls. They also know how to organize on social media. Thats some of what we saw here today. Coming here theres still the skeptics on the way over here. On the plane i was talking to a guy and he said youre going to kids march. They said, yeah, this mar ch an generation that will change things. Thats a striking conversation to have. Some of the kids we were talking to were in middle school. They with your talking about how excited they were to register to vote. It will be interesting to see what happens when this generation thats grown up with active shootings and lockdowns actually start to go to the polls. Chris. You know, organizations are moved by leaders, not just rank and file. I think i saw some future politicians out there today. People who want to lead. What did you think of that . A lot of spokes people look like they want to play that role. Reporter absolutely. Your thoughts about that. Reporter from the halls of high schools to the halls of congress. Its not too far of a march when you have millions of people behind you. Thank you. For more on what it is or what it was like to be one of these student, im joined by daniel who is a senior and angelina. Shes a senior at Marjory Stoneman douglas high. Good show. It was really one of those days in washington. Were you surprised the way this thing has expanded and grown. 800 vents arouevent around the because of what your school started. Im proud of what my school and what everyone across the nation has done. There just the starting point. It will keep going and personally, ill make sure it keeps going. Are you committed, i hate to do this because its so political. The gun rights lobby succeeds not just because it has money and it spends the money to influence politicians but because it has voters who will vote on one issue and only one. The Second Amendment as they see it which is total gun rights. Yeah. Can you think of yourself, as you pass into your 20s and 30s and become a mature voter, keeping that kind of laser focus on gun safety issue . I mean, orvf course. This can happen anywhere. It doesnt matter what neighborhood you come from, rich or poor. Its something that needs to be done. These assault weapons, weapons of war, serve no purpose in the civilian society. If it doesnt get done now, it will get done in the future. What got to you today out there . Everybody about it. Seeing how massive that crowd was. Hearing the speakers from last flight. The country owes the kids from Marjory Stoneman douglas a great debt for doing what they are doing. If i were in their shoes, i dont think i would be able to hold myself together to be able to do Something Like this. I come at this as an organizer who hasnt been affected. Ive seen what happened to them and dont want it to happen. Im doing whatever it take to stand with them. What was different today than before . Theres just a whole feeling. When there was a change in speakers, everyone would channel vote them out. Vote them out meaning vote the politicians owned by the nra who are obstructing the change thats needed and are making us so unsafe in our country and in our schools and nightclubs and what ever else. The youngest was an 11yearold from right near here who spoke about why the young people in the every again movement should be taken seriously. Here she is. People have said that im too young to have these thoughts on my own. People have said that im a tool of some nameless adult. Its not true. My frepiends and i might still 11 but we know life isnt equal for everyone and we know what is right and wrong. We also know that we stand in the shadow of the capitol and we know that we have seven short years until we too have the right to vote. I got to tell you when i was in school i was so afraid of public speaking. The idea of these kids and 11 is a kid, would go out in front of a million people, maybe, on National Television and do it with such spirit and such, what is it . What do you call it, guts . She was performing and making a point. Angelina. Personally, i used to be shy and very i kept to myself. After this happened, i had to grow up very quick. Speaking to so much media and other people who went through the same tragedy i did, i learned my social skills. Ive done speeches since the shooting and we have to know that every ones voice matters. You should break out of your shell. Thats what i did because im doing something that im passionate about and that its something that every one across the nation needs the safety in schools. Youve heard that old expression, i never thought it would happen to me. It happens all the time. People read about murders, hold ups, plane crashes or whatever, train crashes. You probably heard a lot about other school shootings. Then it hits home and its something you never prepared for. Its unexplainable. What do you think youll do as a voter when you find out that a member of congress is going to be voting the right way on these things. When a senator, you have a senate race coming up in your state this fall. What happens if somebody takes the progun position . Theyre not going to be voted in. Yeah. Dan. I feel the same way. If youre taking a stance against our right to live over so you can own a gun. I dont think you have place in our law making system anymore. Thats not the way this country feels anymore. Youll have to step aside. How do we get the Supreme Court to look at it that way . They seem to have taken absolutist position at the right to own a gun. They say you have a right. Under the Second Amendment, these weapons of war are not guaranteed. Why cant people own a tank . Its arms. How about an airplane that drops bombs . Thank you. I dont mean to make light of it because youre serious. Thank you. Thanks. These bands on your arm. Stoneman douglas strong. This is only the beginning. Are we beginning to see the Tipping Point in the gun debate . Well see. Thats ahead. Brads about to find out if his denture can cope with. A steak. Luckily for him, he uses super poligrip. You just saw him there speaking just before the Florida House passed new gun restrictions in the wake of parkland strtragedy defiing the nra for the first time in two decades. We all kind of impressed by the quickness with which the governor down there, rick scott, im not a big fan of his, but he did ploomove on raising the age 21 much faster than Mitch Mcconnell in d. C. And paul ryan. They didnt come to the school. They didnt go to 17 funerals. I will say this, the governor did go to the school. He saw bullet holes in the windows. He saw blood in front of the front door. He looked do unthe hallway and saw what it looked like people slot shot up against the wall. He went to funerals. He drove past funerals to go to different funerals. Id like to think that had some tremendous impact on him. There are sometimes events in your life that move you out of your political corner. I think this was one of them. Is florida like pennsylvania in sense it has the culture of gun owning and deer hunter thing . We have that in the panhandle. The nra has made florida the petri dish to experiment with every single solitary thing thing they come up with. She came down and started the stand your ground stuff. She started open carry. She tarted conce started concea permit. Are you the opposite number . Are you seen as the person who can take her own . Theres me and others. Republicans dont let your bill heard get on the floor if they dont let your amendment come up in committee, i cant take anybody on. Thats why what happened here is it was a bipartisan movement. I see these kids, i see these parents. Theres no doubt that unfortunately, washington is done. I think they have done there stop School Safety act or whatever they want to call this nonsense that does a whole lot of nothing. I think they are done. Democrats cant solve this alone. They get it. They know they need republicans. They need 60 votes in the senate. Florida senator marco rubio is senator put out a statement commending the marches for exercising their First Amendment rights. While i do not agree with all the solutions they propose, i respect their views and recognize that Many Americans support certain gun rights. Is he strung by the fact he wants to go national . Is he still afraid of the nra outside of the state . If hes going to be in the primary again, yes. He could have been there today. Where was he in the president got on a yell kohelicopter and t of town. He is playi ining another round golf. He didnt tweet today. Theres nobody left in the administration. Youre making all your points here. Trump was very wishy washy and a little dodgey on this. He came out in that meeting. He was talking gun safety and raise the age to 21. He meets with the nra, gone. Nothing but this crumbs he threw today. The funny thing is he was talking gun control. Dianne feinstein has a smile on her face because hes talking about her bill. Its the tuesday trump versus the thursday trump. He had a meeting with the nra and we were onto aluminum and steel. What do they say . They remind him that they gave him 50 million. They remind him there are folks that would love to see a primary and the nra members are one of the last folks still with him. Those are nra folks, immigration folks. Pretty scary stuff. Thank you. Six weeks ago the kids at a Marjory Stoneman douglas were just average students and now they are leaders. We look back at the historic day organized by young people from parkland, florida. Reporter a fnew day brought new hope as hundreds of thousands of protesters went to washington to say never again. Welcome to the revolution. Look around. We are the change. Politicians, either represent the people or get out. Stand for us or be ware, the voters are coming. To all the politicians out there, if you take money from the nra, you have chosen death. If you have not expressed to your con stitch wents a public stance on this issue, you have chosen death. If you do not stand with us by saying we need to pass common sense gun legislation, you have chosen death. None of the millions of people marching in this country today will stop until they see those against those out of officer because we choose life. Reporter speakers marred by tragedy gave impassioned voice to one of the biggest youth gathering since the vietnam era. I raise my hand in honor of my twin brother. He was shot on september 20th, 2017 on his way home from a competitive college. Day in and day out our kids are getting shot up and the moment we speak up were scolded that were not old enough. Its as if we need permission to ask our friends not to die. When do we say enough is enough . This whole day what i love about it is the purity of it. Its about one thing, safety for our kids in school. Most of people came with that one message. Reporter celebrities lent they support too. Some taking to the streets, others the stage. Reporter at the same time more than 800 sister rallies are happening in every state and on every continent with one purpose, put politicians on notice. In new york marchers dressed in all white and wore veils. In atlanta they packed the roadways. In parkland, florida. Less than a mile from Marjory Stoneman douglas high school, protesters chanted in unison. Enough is enough. Reporter powerful moments and passionate voices left many feeling inspired. Just seeing every one ban together towards this issue is pretty remarkable. We need to work and continue working together in order for change to be made and motivated to keep going. People have said that im too young to have these thought o t my own. People have said that im a tool of some nameless adult. Its not true. Reporter for all the words spoken today, it may have been silence from parkland shooting survivor Emma Gonzalez that resonated most. Up next one who was out there today. How much would get done given resistance from the nra . Montell williams will join us after this break. Youre watching hardball. Welcome back to this special e degs of hard ball. Many are left wondering what is next. A recent polling a Public Opinion may be shifting. A majority of americans think gun laws should be tightened but few have faith that congress will do it. It should be done but wont be. Thats because the nra remained mostly silent today. It wields tremendous amount of influence over those politicians. Secret power, money power. Today the students said enough. When politicians send their thought and prayers with no action, we say no more. To those politicians supported by the nra that allow the continued slaughter of our children and our future, i say get your resumes ready. For more im joined by montell williams, a former talk show host and naval officer. She lost her 6yearold son dylon during the tragedy at sandy hook elementary. Lets see. I want to start with nicole. You know, ive been following politics for all my life. I dont see politicians defeated because they dont push for gun control. Ive seen theme being beaten for being for gun control and safety. These young people say they will knock off these politicians, get rid of them. Im impressed. That takes real single mindedness saying im going to vote on gun safety. I dont want to hear about abortion rights or war and peace or taxes. Today im going to vote on gun safety. Thats hard thing to get people to do who are thinking people. It is hard thing to get people to do but if do you are single mind eed and laser focus on what you want to achieve, its possible. These are of voter age or coming into voter age and will have their voices heard by the way they tick the voter checks. Youve been looking and working in this area, is it broad now or just the people who showed up today. Can we imagine 800,000 there today, usually you have about ten times that many people are thinking like this. How do you do this . When i started five years ago, i think the majority of americans are not engaged in this issue which is Something Like background checks failed in 2013. This has been growing for the last five years. With the younger people involved as well, its creating this tide thats not going to go away. I do think that enough people are involved. The majority are involved now in order to make
