Rather its the lack of leadership. And solidarity at the global and national levels. Lack of leadership, thats the greatest threat now. Not the virus. Lack of leadership. And its actually worse than a lack of leadership, because President Trump is actually leading people to their deaths. Once again today, President Trump said we have to open our schools. And he does not ever say we have to open our schools safely. He never attaches that one extra word safe to the opening of schools. He just said we have to open our schools. And once again, President Trump has made it clear that he does not care how many teachers die from coronavirus, if we just reopened all of our schools and invited every student back into the classroom, just like it was 2019. And once again, its clear that President Trump does not care how many children might die or how many children might get brain damage, which is one of the possible effects of coronavirus in children. And President Trump does not care because, as mary trump has diagnosed her uncle, he is a sociopath. And that is the same clinical assessment that over 30 psychiatrists and Mental Health professionals in a book warning us about President Trumps fragile and dangerous psyche delivered to us. But there was Something Else on display today, when President Trump talked about schools that mary trump describes in her book. He may have a long, undiagnosed learning disability that, for decades, has interfered with his ability to process information. President trumps ability to process information has been reported by many Trump White House insiders, and it was on vivid display today when he was asked a very simple question, what do you tell parents and teachers who feel its unsafe to go back into their classrooms . What do you tell parents and teachers who feel that its unsafe to go back . I would tell parents and teachers that you should find yourself a new person, whoever is in charge of that decision, because its terrible decision. Did you hear that . The question was, what do you tell parents who think its unsafe for their children to go back into the classroom, and President Trump said, i would tell parents that you should find yourself a new person, whoever is in charge of that decision, because its terrible decision. The parent is in charge of the decision of whether the child will go back to school. President trump would tell parents to find a new parent to make that decision for their child. That is what the president of the United States said today, and that is a clear and complete inability to process information. To process the words that were just said to him. President trump could not process that simple question. And therefore, he could not answer that question. But he kept talking. He kept talking in response to that question. Telling the pathological lie that children and parents are dying in America Today because children have been kept out of school. President trump actually said children and parents are dying from that trauma, too. Theyre dying because they cant do what theyre doing, mothers cant go to work because all of a sudden they have to stay home and watch their child. Not one child in america has died because that child has not gone to school during the pandemic. Not one american not one parent in america has died because their child has not gone to school during the pandemic. That was President Trump at his most pathological, lying about how americans are dying from the coronavirus. In a Georgetown University discussion today, dr. Anthony fauci said, in effect, please dont listen to President Trump. When he was asked who people should trust about the coronavirus. You can trust respected medical authorities. You know, i believe im one of them, so i think you can trust me. But i would stick with respected medical authorities, who have a track record of telling the truth, who have a track record of giving information and policy and recommendations based on Scientific Evidence and good data. So if i were to give advice to you and your family and your friends and your family, i would say thats the safest bet to do. To listen to the recommendations from that category of people. But its entirely understandable how the public can get mixed messages and then get a bit confused about what they should do. Yeah, i think we know how the public is getting mixed messages. Apparently too many people in florida have been getting mixed messages and have been listening to President Trumps Public Health advice. And the trump loyalist governor of florida, ron desantis, who two months ago, was literally laughing about predictions that florida was headed for an increase in coronavirus cases. Youve got a lot of people in your profession who wax poetically for weeks and weeks about how florida was going to be just like new york. Wait two weeks, florida is going to be next. Just like italy, wait two weeks. Hell, were eight weeks away, so they have to find a boogeyman. Maybe its the black helicopter circling the department of health. If you believe that, ive got a bridge in brooklyn i would like to sell you. This weekend, florida set the record for the largest number of new coronavirus cases at 15,300. Today, florida came in second to texas for the number of coronavirus cases reported. Texas is governed by republicans who share President Trumps eagerness to reopen everything. Tonight, texas has more people being treated for coronavirus and hospitalized than any other state. Florida has the second highest number of people hospitalized for coronavirus tonight. And Infectious Disease expect at the university of miami says that miami is the epicenter of the coronavirus in the United States. Today, joe biden said this its gotten bad enough that even President Trump finally decided to wear a mask in public. Im glad he made the shift. Mr. President , its not enough. We wont be able to turn the corner, get American People back to work safely without president ial leadership. Leading off our discussion tonight, she was in the rose garden today during whatever that was President Trump was going in the rose garden. And john is an nbc news and msnbc National Affairs analyst. That was billed as a press conference in the rose garden today. The president took about seven questions, i think. And for the first time i can remember seeing it in the rose garden, he used that federal property as a campaign venue and spent a minimum of half of his time attacking what joe biden had said earlier in the day. You could tell this was the president unloading. This was billed by the white house as a speech and press conference dealing with hong kong and china. The president vaguely talked about that. But what the president did was unload on joe biden. Of course, in doing so, he also had a host of misleading statements, things that he was saying that were not true. What you saw in the president was someone that was clearly seething and couldnt go out on the campaign trail because of this pandemic and he wanted to use the rose garden, which has never been used in this nakedly political way. But he did that today. It was remarkable to watch him. And it was really i think at some point, 40 minutes into the speech, reporters including myself, we looked around and realized we were at a Campaign Event, we were no longer at the white house, we were really at an event focused on the 2020 election. The thesis of the president s speech is that there are two big differences between the president and joe biden. I think as he was laying out all of those differences, it is something that joe biden could get behind, the idea that theyre markedly different. The president was just doubling down on this idea that the coronavirus is in the rearview mirror. He talked about the idea that the nation is on top of things and testing is creating cases. But it was a confusing speech, but also a speech that left me feeling like President Trump feels backed up against the wall and wanted to unload on everyone, that he feels is an enemy. And john, remind our audience what the phrase Rose Garden Campaign means. The incumbent president has always had the rose garden and the trappings of the presidency that and they normally used that to make official announcements about things they were doing or accomplishing as president , maybe having a bill signing. And that was all thought to be very beneficial to a president s reelection campaign. No president has ever used the rose gard enon the go out there and overtly campaign against the opponent from the other party the way President Trump did today. Right, lawrence. The Rose Garden Campaign is built into the notion of all the advantages of incumbency. One of the things thats great about being president of the United States, you have that big airplane, air force one, you get to fly around the country on it and campaign. You have all the trappings, all the grandeur of the office and the ability to move Public Policy in ways that are beneficial to the country, and to particular constituencies. Every incumbent does this. They use the power of the presidency to advance their political interest. That is not new. What is new is the use of the setting that is the white house, the rose garden, the east room, other place where is President Trump has gone, the White House Briefing room over the curse of the past few months and using them as a place for partisan, invective attack. It would be as though George Herbert walker bush attacked dukakis for being a member of the aclu. Or if barack obama took after mitt romney for bain capital from the rose garden. So the bigger problem is not just the lack of decorum, but the president right now is using his omnipresence and president ial power to continue to erode his political standing. Everything he does, every official act he takes as president is making him less politically more politically weak and less politically stable. I dont think ive ever seen in 30 years covering incumbent president s covering elections. Quite astonishes. He clearly rushed out of there. He used as much time as he could doing his own remarks. Didnt want to get questions from you or other reporters. So he never got a question about what he knew about intelligence reports indicating that russia was paying to kill american soldiers, and a whole list of other things that he avoided by rushing out of there as quickly as he did. And promising as he was leaving that he was going to do more of these, that will be that are essentially Campaign Events, which will technically masquerade as opportunities for you to ask questions. Thats right. An event at the white house is billed a press conference that usually means well have a back and forth with the president where he will have a robust conversation with reporters who are standing in there. Theres so many things the president has not answered about. Hes just today when he said that white americans are killed more than black americans and as a result, there isnt an issue there. We know that africanamericans are 2 1 2 times more likely to be killed by Police Officers than white people. There is also a question of whether or not america could trust him. My question was, why should people trust you . Because the president has just said so many things that are misleading, including the fact that the virus is going to disappear at some point or 99 harmless in most cases. We know that to be false. The president didnt really get a chance to answer questions about white house aides and now peter navaro are attacking dr. Anthony fauci. The white house has been saying this is something thats going on, when we now see a new oped tonight out saying that dr. Fauci is wrong. There was so many questions that the president needed to answer, that the president still needs to answer. But instead, the president went on for some 45, 50 minutes, took a handful of questions and turned around as we were all shouting questions. He really could have and should have stayed and answered more questions. John, we have polling now showing over 70 of parents worried about sending their children back to school. And President Trump still does not say one word to those parents, even when he was invited in that cbs interview today to Say Something specific to parents who are worried about sending their kids back to school. Well, lawrence, its worse than that. Its what you pointed out in your opening. He said something to americas parents. He basically attacked them. Any parent right now who is worried about sending their kid back to school, President Trump today attacked those parents and said youre incompetent parents. If youre worried about your kids safety, youre incompetent. Its astonishing, your number right there 70 , which turns out to be the percentage of americans who have confidence in dr. Fauci. So here you have President Trump taking on these political fights that are not just fights he cant win, but are suicidal fights. You have your 30 Approval Rating on the coronavirus, so you attack anthony fauci, two has a 70 rating. You have your 38 Approval Rating with the country and you attack 70 of americas parts for having concerns about sending their kids back to school. It does suggest political malpractice and suggests questions that is the president really all there on these questions . Because these are the acts of a mad man, politically speaking, the act of a political lunatic. I mean, next thing hell start attacking the schoolchildren. When that happens, well know he has gone completely around the bin. Yeah, its all one piece. The mary trump account of who President Trump is and the way he thinks is all part of explaining what we saw in the rose garden today. Thats right. A lot of americans, im just diving into the book on mary trump. Just this evening, i was reading about it, and ive been talking to historians who have studied President Trump. His world view comes a lot from his upbringing, he had a father who didnt want him to be emotional. He grew up in such wealth and privilege and grew up around africanamericans who were the driver to his father or the maid to his home. So his whole world view is formed in a lot of the ways that we when we see him grow up. So this is a president who, i guess this is a president who were just learning more and more about. In this regard, this book is really a window into his character. I think maybe thats also why were seeing President Trump go off and do these things that seem to be frankly weird or frankly unusual politically, political risks that hes taking. Maybe he feels backed up against the wall, because polls are showing joe biden is doing better and better, and now he has his niece with a new book with this tellall book.
