Quote, secret plan. Hillary clinton saying trumps socalled secret plan means no plan. They will have 30 days to submit to the oval office a plan for soundly and quickly defeating isis. He says he has a secret land to defeat isis. The secret is he has no plan. For years we have been caught up in endless wars an conflicts under the leadership of failed politicians and a failed, totally failed porn policy. After all his talk, the only thing that is clear is he has no clue about what hes talking about. Also this morning, new scrutiny over Donald Trumps past political donations. The latest involving a contribution to the attorney general of florida when she was considering joining a Fraud Lawsuit against trump university. The best Political Team in the business is ready to go. We start on the intrepid with kasie hunt and peter alexander. The intrepid kasie hunt. You guys have better hair for this. I got to tell you. Its a little windy. Lets start with the speech in philadelphia. 11 00 we expect to hear more about his plans for National Security and defense. What are you hearing about what we can expect . We got our first look at his remarks that hes going to be delivering this afternoon. Hell focus on this idea, he says three crucial words for this country will be at the core of his Foreign Policy, which is the idea of peace through strength. Well talk about military preparedness, specifically the defense sequester, the automated military budget cuts, hell call an end to that. The question going into today is how he planned to offset the costs obviously. Hes going to say, what we hear from a lot of politicians in the past, which is by ending fraud and wasteful spending. Not clear that that will make up the budget gap that he will have to cover on this topic. Hes certain to hit Hillary Clinton on a series of issues, most specifically, what the regions look like where there are the problems, places like syria and iraq and egypt and the iran deal, all things hes going to tie to Hillary Clinton, the obamaclinton administration as hell describe it and problems that he believes hes better served to try to fix. You mentioned a sequester. I want to remind our viewers and listeners what donald trump said about the sequester back in 2013. I think the cuts are not going to be steep as you see. I think youre going to have to do a lot more cut fg youre going to balance budgets, youre going to be doing a lot of cutting. Theres no question about it. Everybody knows it. The president knows it, Congress Knows it and this is just the be zbing. What is the campaign saying about what prompted the 180 . You talk about the 180. Today hes going to call for the end to the sequester. Back then he said they didnt go farr enough. This idea of peace through strength, donald trump is casting himself as the strong candidate, the person best served to help our military, grow our military, fortify our defenses. One of the inadequacies i think some will say is the lack of policy positions on topics like isis. In his remarks today, hell say within his first 30 day z as president he would convene his top generals to have them come together with their plan to defeat and destroy isis. In the past he said he had a secret plan, now hes sort of revealing there isnt a lot of a plan yet, but wants to hear what the generals say after he would become president. Hillary clinton down 19 points with active duty military and voters who at some point served in the military. Thats a significant margin, although it is pretty much on par with what weve seen from other democrats in past president ial cycles. Whats she doing to try to cut into that . Well, keep in mind, craig, this issue, National Security Foreign Policy is something that when we started this election cycle, republicans had the advantage. Obamas Foreign Policy on the whole was not as well reviewed. There were a lot of concerns. You had people like Lindsey Graham talking about strength. I remember talking to independent voters in virginia, many of whom who had concerns about donald trump, but said what appeals to me is his strength. Hillary clinton has turned those tables around, particularly with suburban women. Thats, of course, the group trump has spent a lot of time trying to win back over by making this argument that donald trump is too unpredictable to have his finger on the nuclear button. They acknowledge they have some work to do with veterans, but thats not necessarily a gap thats at odds with what weve seen in the past. Its not as though veterans and military voters are picking trump in much greater numbers than they have other republican ms. The past. I think its a community that she has been close to over her time as secretary of state. She interacted with military families quite a bit. One of the numbers thats striking as we talk about secretary clinton is the idea of trustworthiness which has been dogging her throughout this campaign. When it comes to who do you trust to properly make the right decisions when it comes to our nuclear codes, our nuclear weapons, 44 of americans say we actually trust Hillary Clinton. 24 trust him. A quarter of them dont trust either of these folks. Which is interesting when you consider you have a significant number of people in the poll who apparently said, i trust trump more to handle the military, not so much the military codes. Peter alexander and kasie hunt, thank you very much, for dealing with the wind as well. Well be here all day. Tennessee senator bob corker chairman of the Foreign Relations committee and a onetime top prospect to be Donald Trumps running mate was on morning joe talking about the president ial race as it relates to the war on terror. Here is what he said. I havent heard either candidate be very crisp as it relates to isis, nor have i heard either candidate be crisp as it relates to our fiscal issues, en titlement issues or anything else. I want to bring in former congressman and retired three star admiral from the u. S. Navy, joe sestak. He was and remains, we should note here for the purposes of this conversation, especially, the highest military official ever elected to congress. Good to see you. Good to see you. This is a much different, and i think you can agree far more dangerous world than it was four years ago. How is the rise of isis and isis inspired lone wolf type attacks, how is that playing into this race so far . I think it is and should be playing significantly into this race. Americans always feel that what we have to do as a minimum is protect our borders. Yet, over the decades of our country we used to have whats also of concern is that isis is appearing in other places. North korea looks like its bent upon having a Nuclear Warhead on a missile. We safely put iran in the box on that. Th theres a disconcerting effort. I think what were voting for is not just a president , but a commanderinchief who has a vision as well as a strat jeerks but will also listen to facts and wont filter them to what they already believe in order to ensure that we recognize a war isnt always the answer to those problems abroad. Lets look at some of the polling here, admiral. Mitt romney, as you know, military members voted for him, up roughly 20 points. John mccain also easily carried that group. In 2008, john kerry, the most recent mom knee with military service, lost military votes by roughly 16 points. Here is our latest nbc News Survey Monkey poll, Hillary Clinton down 19 points with military members and veterans. Why does your party seem to struggle so much with military voters . We have extraordinarily thoughtful individuals, officers and enlisted in the military. When you look at recruitment of who is in the military, you can draw a broad swath from about pennsylvania all the way through the south and almost stopping about where california is. We tend to recruit most heavily, particularly in our enlisted from the most conservative elements of our nation. That doesnt mean they dont think. Look at what you brought up earlier. Who do you trust their hand on the nuclear control button . When you have donald trump who has actually said maybe japan needs a nuke, where it says Nuclear Proliferation wont be bad, maybe even for saudi arabia. Theyre thoughtful, but i would argue this. Its not only this is what both leaders need to stress, about being out there in a time of war. What do you do when they come home . I remember working with the first lady, mrs. Clinton when i was at the National Security council. She was instrumental both in getting established the veterans sculpture down in arlington. But also with agent orange, wasnt get the bureaucracy to open it up to more who had agent orange. I think that also i hope will come out. We have to take care of our vets when they come home. You saw what donald trump did on some of those statements with the parents at the convention. One of the arguments here, Hillary Clintons opponents, continue to hit her on this email server use, saying she was careless about National Security, so careless that she cant be trusted. This is what mrs. Clinton said last night about those three classified emails that were found on the fbi found by the fbi on the server. Take a listen. There were a couple of emails with a tiny c in a parentheses which did not have a header saying that means confidential in this circumstance and which the director of the fbi has said and the state Department Said those couple of emails were improperly marked even with that. So, yes, i take classification seriously, and i think the record shows that i have. Congressman, if youre a member of the military or a vet who cares about National Security and classification, why should that reasoning be excusable in this matter . I think the best thing for secretary clinton to have done, to do, is to say, i made an error, i was wrong. Because as commanderinchief, you have going to lead those who are actually responsible for holding on to classified material. It doesnt mean it hasnt been done before. But i do think that is the right approach. That said, do i think that she can be trusted to be a fine, extraordinarily fine commanderinchief . Yes, i do. I may not have always agreed with every decision in iraq and libya. But once youve been secretary of state and been out there in the world and listening to her articulate, that it really is china that is the Strategic Center of gravity for us this century, isis is a tactical issue, that we really do have to reform the military because we can do more with less, and that you actually have someone who understands the values of alliances, that we actually won our independence with a french general winning yorktown which is why his sculpture is the closest seat to the white house. I understand the issue of trust and transparency. I think shell take that aboard. Admiral congressman joe sestak. Good to see you. Pleasure to be back with you. Thank you. A reminder to you, of course. You can catch the commanderinchief forum live right here from the intrepid sea, air and space museum tonight at 8 00 on nbc and msnbc. Where Hillary Clinton and donald trump stand on the issues facing the commanderinchief. Plus va reform and immigration. Ill talk to veterans attending tonights forum about what they would like to hear from the candidates including retired marine captain and purple heart recipient who has made it his lifes mission to help fellow veterans heal their invisible wounds with a leash in their hand. Captain jason hagan and axel are ahead. Were continuing to you live from the intrepid air and space museum. Mom, i have to tell you something. Dad, one second i was driving and then the next. They just didnt stop and then. Im really sorry. I wrecked the subaru. I wrecked it. Youre ok. Thats all that matters. vo a lifetime commitment to getting them home safely. Love. The two candidates have been sparring on the campaign trail over their policies on military and Veterans Affairs. Hans nichols is with me aboard the u. S. S. Intrepid. Lets get past the Campaign Rhetoric and talk about their record and their statements. Where do they stand on syria . Where do they stand on isis . Craig, both Hillary Clinton and donald trump are more assertive, more aggressive, more hawk kish on syria and isis than the man they plan to replace. Thats clear from the speeches weve heard. Were on the decks of an aircraft carrier, primarily an offensive tool of war. In some ways donald trump will be more offensive because Hillary Clinton has to defend a war of the president she served under. Thats a different dynamic. Look for trump to flush out his positions. Hes called for 20,000 to 30,000 more Ground Troops in iraq and syria to combat isis. On the issue of president assad, dulz he have to go, mr. Trump said he could be comfortable with him staying there. The real issue is isis. Where does Hillary Clinton stand on committing u. S. Troops to combat missions . Shes talked about some boots of the ground. She wont use that phrase. What shell say is she wants to have special operators on the ground. These are men who are special forces out there training and assisting. She doesnt want to see a big footprint. Thats a clear difference between the two candidates. On the issue of assad, shes been very clear that assad has to go. On the issue of a nofly zone, here she deviates from the man she served under, president barack obama. She is for a nofly zone, safe zones for civilians. Its a crucial difference. Im really interested to see to what extent donald trump makes Hillary Clinton play defense tonight. Back here, domestic surveillance. Mr. Trump is for much stronger domestic surveillance. This is the cleve he has with the libertarian base of his community. A lot of those folks dont like the idea. You take a look at the patriot act, this has provisions in there, section 215, i believe, talked about the importance of collecting metadata. Donald trump is for that. Hillary clinton isnt. Donald trump is also for surveilling moss. Unclear under what Constitutional Authority he will do that. Hillary wants to enlist silicon valley. She wants to harness some of the social powers of the internet and use that as a force to stop, prevent terrorist attacks. Well see to what extent she teases that out. Hans nichols, good to see you in the flesh. Welcome aboard. Nbc news chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel joins us from istanbul, turkey. Richard, it was very important for us to have you as a part of this conversation, to talk about some of the Critical Issues facing the next president , facing the next commanderinchief, defeating isis, the crisis in syria. What would you like to hear from donald trump and Hillary Clinton tonight . Reporter well, id like to hear what keeps them up at night. What are their priorities. Its obvious that syria is a problem. Its obvious that isis is a threat to the United States and to europe because the group comes out almost daily says its going to carry out attacks in the United States and europe. But beyond those two obvious things, how do they see the world . Do they see russian expansionism as a main problem, containing china . What about cyber . Id like to hear a vision that i havent really heard from the two candidates. From trump weve heard something of an oldfashioned isolationist standpoint. He talks about how every decision he makes would be filtered through this America First paradigm, that nothing would be taken unless it benefited directly americas actions in the first case. Thats an oldfashioned american stance. It has a long tradition in u. S. Politics. Hillary clinton seems to be more of an interventionist, supporting iraq and the invasion of libya. Id like to see more about their general world visions. This is what donald trump said yesterday about defeating isis. Said it was at the top of his agenda. Take a listen. Were going to convene my top generals and give them a simple instruction. They will have 30 days to submit to the oval office a plan for soundly and quickly defeating is isis. Richard, if we could come up with a plan in 30 days, why havent we gotten one so far . Reporter well, i think its a little more complicated than just coming up with a plan and implementing it. Isis could be defeated quite easily actually. The group is hated. Its been losing territory. It is under attack from multiple fronts. But what is lacking and frankly what has always been lacking is a unified international strategy. Does the u. S. Go alone or does it try and work in concert with russia and iran, potentially even the syrian regime, hezbollah. There are so many different factions involved. Even turkey now has troops on syrian territory. Coming up with an americanled, americanonly plan, sure, that would be easy. Im sure american generals would love that opportunity, but there are so many other players on the battlefield, its not just an american generals prerogative.
