I love the stage, almost everything about it. In 2009, the Motion Picture academy awarded becall an honorary oscar, giving her the chance to deliver one more classic line. A man at last. Lisa so kind for you to be with us this morning to share some of your reflections of this man we all loved. You penned a thank you note to Robin Williams for a lot of the experience. You were 14 at the time and you were given a really hard option because your school said you cant do this movie and if you do, were going to kick you out. What did you do and what happened . Well, i did the movie. It sort of evolved with my school over time. It was a lot of pressure to put on them to have them come up with six months worth of work for me do ahead of time. That didnt work for them, and so i was not allowed to come back to school, and so i did the movie. I was very dis distraught at being out of school at 14. Robin was a kind and generous soul. He stepped in, wrote a letter to your principal. Wrote how valuable this experience was. It shouldnt be mutually exclusive going for a dream like this and coming back to pursue your education. What happened . Unfortunately, it didnt work. He put his neck out for me and did this very generous thing, unfortunately things dont always fall together the way you would want them to and it didnt work out, but it was an incredible lesson for me in you just try to help your friends, you just try to do whats right and sometimes the outcome is not up to you. Its a valuable lesson for a young 14yearold to learn, and now you write this beautiful thank you note for him, how surprised were you to hear about this and also how did it make you feel because you opened up about suffering from your own issues of depression. I was like the rest of the world and i was completely shocked, saddened. I think im still in shock, but mental illness, depression, these are really important issues we need to be talking about. I think there is a lot of shame that surrounds it. I think people who are struggling with these issues feel isolated, and i think things like this are great that we can kind of bring them to light and discuss them further, and let people know that if they are having a hard time with this, theres help available. Theres help out there. And for you, where are you in your life right now . You are retired from acting . I am. Im retired from acting. I retired when i was 22. Im a writer now and that has been amazing way for me to deal with the world, deal with my anxiety issues that i have, and really reach out to people and the emails ive gotten back from people who say, hey, i can so much relate to this, i completely understand what you are saying, maybe the circumstances look a little different, but underneath, it we all deal with the same things.
