Russias president Vladimir Putin and kim jongun. President trump admitted during an hourlong phone call he did not bring up russian meddling in the 2020 elections. Overnight kim test fired a newspaper of weapons over the sea of japan. They downplayed the significance of the test, south korea urging the u. S. To respond with caution. First, our nbc correspondent in asia Janice Mackey frar is joining us from seoul. What are you hearing about the weapons test and reaction from the allies . This move by north korea certainly raises the level of uncertainty here as talks with the u. S. Has stalled and lines of communication with pyongyang have apparently gone silent. South korean officials confirm for nbc news that several shortrange projectiles were fired. They traveled about 120 Miles Landing between the sea of japan and north korea. The message that appears to be being sent here by kim jongun is perhaps hes looking at lifting the moratorium that he announced in 2017 when he said that he was finished with testing missiles for now. If this is indeed confirmed to be maisel test, a missile test. So this suggests a change in behavior. The stalemate came about with the is collapse in hanoi, when President Trump walked away without a deal, but he said at the time he had a promise from kim jongun that there would be no return to testing. President trump was informed by the by the National Security adviser late last night. He tweeted today saying of kim jongun that he would not break his promise to President Trump but this pattern of behavior that seems to be evolving suggests that kim jongun is willing to escalate tension with the u. S. In order to gain some sort of leverage. Phillip . That was nbcs Janice Mackey frayer joining us from seoul. Thank you very much, janice. Now to the president s phone call with russian president Vladimir Putin. Nbcs Mike Viqueira is joining us with details now. It was yesterday when the president had a one hour long call with his counterpart from russia, Vladimir Putin, and he talked a lot about, as you might expect, world hot spots they have in common and potential areas of conflict, venezuela, north korea, talking about bringing china in with trade, whole host of things. They also talked about the Mueller Report. According to Sarah Sanders and later the president , they agreed there was no collusion. Vladimir putin according to the president said he knew that all along and they both agreed they would be moving on from that. But its what they didnt talk about when it comes to the Mueller Report and russias activity in 2016 election and by the estimation the American Intelligence Community and bob mueller himself, there are plans to continue that interference into next years elections, that did not come up. President trump perhaps mindful of a lot of reporting and photoop we will get to in a second here, very contentious yesterday at the white house, he tweeted this morning, very good call yesterday with president putin of russia. Tremendous potential for a good great relationship with russia, despite what you read and see in the fake news media. Look how they misled you on russia. Collusion, the world can be a better and safer place. Nice. What hes reacting to in part is some of the coverage and the questioning that he got from among other people, nbcs own Kristen Welker yesterday in an unrelated photoop in the oval office. Mr. President , did you tell them not to meddle in the next election . Excuse me. Im talking. Im answering this next question. You are very rude. So we had a good conversation about many different things. Did you talk about them not meddling in the next election . We did not discuss that. Did not discuss russias plan, again, in the estimation of the Intelligence Community and others to once again meddle in the u. S. Election. Sarah sanders, the president s press secretary at the white house, said this president , unlike the previous one, takes election meddling very seriously. However, it did not come up in that conversation with Vladimir Putin yesterday. Mike . Nbcs Mike Viqueira. All right, nice. Nice. Joining me now, betsy woodruff, politics reporter for the daily beast and msnbc contributor john harwood. Thank you for joining me today. The president has been criticized for not addressing election meddling with Vladimir Putin. Whats holding him back here . Whats holding him back is the election helped him in meddling in 2016. Look, that was a shocking phone call the president had with Vladimir Putin yesterday. It was reminiscent of after he fired jaxz james comey, his fbi director, he had the Russian Foreign minister and ambassador in the oval office and said the pressure is off. Gave every appearance from what we know about the call of a moment to celebrate with Vladimir Putin the end of the Mueller Report. What we know about the relationship between these two leaders is Vladimir Putin very much wanted President Trump to win in 2016, went through Great Lengths through his Intelligence Services to try to make that happen. And we know the president s been very solicitous of Vladimir Putin and his aides interaction. So i think this is a moment where americans have reason for concern. Betsy, the president has a history of embracing dictators and toll tallian dig tarts. Its not limited to just putin and kim jongun. What is the white houses explanation for this . Is this advancing u. S. Policy in any way, shape or form . The defense the white house makes of it is usually situational. In the case of mohammed vince amman in saudi arabia they point to oil prices, to their optimistic view that mbs will be helpful in Jared Kushners efforts to negotiate some sort of peace plan against the palestinians and israelis. They frame it in pragmatic terms. That said the jury is very much still out on whether or not mbs and the saudi royal family are going to dlivger on the promises they have made to the Trump Administration and whether they are more a help or a hindrance when it comes to american efforts to sort of calm that very troubled region of the world. In the case of other autocratic figures, trump says just admires the way they do what they do. Arigo from the fill beans has been criticized across the board by human rights figures and other governments by his brutal crackdown on the drug trade in that country, including nonviolent drug users who have been subject to intense violence. Trump has pointed to duarte and others who use comparably a violent means to try to fight Drug Trafficking as examples of people who have been tough on crime and someone he wishes he could emulate. Theres no question the president has a bent that defines this mode of governance to be really appealing and in a weird way its one of the few consistent through lines of his presidency and his private life before coming president , these kind of autocratic leaders he just tends to like. I want to ask you about the 20 race. The president this week went on a tweak tirade after the National Firefighters union endorsed former Vice President js joe biden for president. What do you think is behind that . Clearly the president takes the support of Blue Collar Workers seriously. One of his fop priorities is presenting himself, quote unquote a blue collar billionaire. A term you hear from trump ail lies and aids, talking about how they framed his race in 2016 and how they hope to frame it in 2020. If biden is able to cut into the blue collar support that the president prides himself on having, clearly trump sees that as quite threatening and thats part of the reason he was so exercised by the announcement that that Firefighters Union was supporting biden. Don, biden continues to hold the lead in the democratic field. You sat down with the president ial candidate, senator Amy Klobuchar, a we wideranging interview and talked about some of that. Heres some of what she had to say. Vice President Biden is a good person and was a great Vice President. I believe im the candidate for our times, and that is because im first of all from the heartland. I know how to win in purple districts and in red congressional districts. Like i dont think you have seen in a lot of the other candidates. The age is also part of it. You said a candidate for our time. For me, thats part of my argument. But it doesnt mean you couldnt be older and do the job. And im not being ageist here. Its just my story is different than everybody elses. I know you talked about a number of different topics. What stood out to you . Well, i think that exchange was significant because as Amy Klobuchar said, she wasnt trying to be ageist however our nbc the wall street journal polling has showed high level of concerns by americans across the board about voting for somebody over 75. Joe biden is right now in a fairly commanding position in the democratic race. He got a big bump from his announcement and his rivals will have to figure out a way to go after hix effectively without alienating fellow democrats and by noting that shes a younger candidate, somebody who is a more contemporary figure, joe biden was in the u. S. Senate when she was 12. Thats the kind of thing you are going to hear from Amy Klobuchar and maybe down the road from Pete Buttigieg and some of the other younger candidates as well. We will see if age is indeed a factor. John harwood, betsy woodruff, thank you so much for joining me today. Also developing this hour, terrifying moments as a passenger jet ends up in the river at the end of a runway luckily everybody came out alive. The boeing is still in the waters today. Jessica clark from our nbc affiliate in jacksonville, florida, has the latest details forbe us. Reporter phillip, the plane is in the st. Johns river off the naval airbase. The report was coming in here to land at nasjax. It was coming from Guantanamo Bay, cuba, from the naval station there. But something wrong took place that made the plane skid off the runway and into the st. Johns river e. Which river, which is right there by the Naval Air Station. There were 143 on board. Thats a mix of 136 passengers and 7 on the air crew. A mixture of civilians as well as military personnel. All of them were able to get out of the plane. They have survived. Some of them have minor injuries. 21 of them went to the hospital but weve told all of them have been discharged. The real sad part about all of this is while the plane was still in the river and investigation is just starting today, there are animals on board the plane. There were peoples pets, cats and dogs and we dont know how theyre doing because crews have not been able to get on to the plane to get to those animals but we have been told theyre in the belly of the plane, which could be underwater. We have been told the cabin has no water in it. The people who are aboard thankful to survive that scary situation last night. And the ntsb is now investigating. Saturday on the stump, busy day on the campaign trail with more than to dozen events. Iowa hosting the most with five, the Iowa Caucuses still 275 days away. Lets go to the warren camp in osage, iowa and nbc road warrior le Leann Caldwell. Youre at the site of a meet and greet there. What are we hearing there . Has anybody made up their mind yet . Phillip, the Iowa Caucuses, were still months away so its very early but i must say theres a shift on the campaign trail. I was in iowa a month ago speaking with Elizabeth Warren and every voter was completely candidate shopping. The they didnt have a favorite. Now this is the second day i have spent with Elizabeth Warren and people showing up to her event are in her lane, shes in the top tier of candidates. So she seems to be gaining traction in iowa and the polls are reflecting that. There have been a series of polls showing her having a little bit of a bump. This is definitely the trajectory Elizabeth Warren and her campaign are hoping for and they hope this continues, especially iowa is such a critical state in her path to the nomination, phillip. Nbcs Leann Caldwell in iowa with the warren camp, thank you. Meanwhile, President Trump is facing a new wave of criticism after he did not warn the russian president not to meddle in our elections again. The two had a phone conversation yesterday that reportedly lasted at least an hour. This is a photo the russian associates released of Vladimir Putin during that phone call. And this morning the president again attacked the media and wrote theres, quote, a potential for a great relationship with russia. Mr. President , can ydid you address the mueller issues with the president today . We talked, he sort of smiled when he said something to the effect it starts offer as a mountain and ended up being a mouse. So we had a good conversation about many things. Did you tell him not to meddle in the next election . We didnt discuss that. Really, we didnt discuss it. The First Exchange between the two leaders since the Mueller Reported unee quickively the russian government interfered with the 2016 president ial election in systemic and sweeping fashion. The report also found the Trump Campaign benefited through information stolen and released through russian records. And just this week the fbi record is h this they will keep upping their game so we are very much reviewing 2018 as kind of a dress rehearsal for the big show in 2020. Meanwhile, a new umt maltimay House Democrats to get the unredacted Mueller Report, the attorney general will be held in context. It is gravely disappointing the attorney general is not withholding his oath of office and looking out for the American People and our system of justice but acting as a defense attorney and block on behalf of the president of the United States. That ag barr is in the way and will not last forever. We will have special counsel mueller before us. The American People will know the truth. Some republicans are defending the attorney general saying its enough hes given top Democratic Leaders limited access to some redacted parts of the report. They have been offered the unredacted version. Now theres one of those people who has been offered it, and they said they dont want to see it. They want the public to see it. Which is kind of a strange stance to take. I wonder if its because they
