MSNBCW Weekends With Alex Witt January 12, 2020

Conversation. There was intelligence that they there was an intent to target the u. S. Embassy in baghdad. What the president said with regard to the four embassies is what i believe as well. He said he believed that they probably, they could have been targeting the embassies in the region. I have not yet been able to ascertain details as to the imminence of the attack. I believe that the briefers and the president believe that they had a basis for concluding there was an imminent attack. I dont doubt that. Its frustrating to be told that and not get the details. Im willing to stand up even against a president of my party because we need to stand up and take back the power. I think imminent means soon, quickly. In process. I think those threats were imminent. I dont want to get into the definition further than that. We took the measures necessary to protect american diplomats and our soldiers, sailors. This president is impeached for life, regardless of any gamesmanship. Theres a key difference between trials and coverups. Trials have witnesses. Coverups dont. If he is exonerated in the senate by purely partisan vote, i dont think he will have been exonerated at all. We will cover all the angles of the stories with our team of correspond entresponden correspondents. Rockets hitting an iraqi air base housing u. S. Soldiers. What more can you tell us about this attack . Is it too early to guess whether the attack could have been undertaken by iranian proxies . Reporter yeah, far too early to make that determination. In the last hour, we understand at least six rockets hitting that air base. Its 40 miles to the north of baghdad. At least four iraqi soldiers were wounded. Thats pretty much the extent of what we know. A reminder iraq continues to be dangerous. What about can i ask about the Trump Administrations efforts to try to explain this reasoning for the strike against soleimani . What new is being said . Reporter well, listen, we still continue to see this debate over the term imminent. We had the sunday morning shows, of course, in the United States centering around washington, d. C. Mark esper making the rounds. Listen to what he said. We had information that there was going to be an attack within a matter of days that would be broad in scale. In other words, more than one country. It would be bigger than previous attacks, take us into open hostility with iran. Is that threat gone . That was orchestrated by soleimani. He was the one has led the attacks for 20 years. Is that threat gone . That threat has been disrupted. I think what we have to find out now is continue to work to make sure that thread is complet is. Reporter that was face the nation nation. We continue to follow the story. The other big news, a second day of protests in tehran. Thousands of people taking to the streets, chanting remarkable slogans against the regime, including death to khomani. We saw protests that were put down. Hundreds of people at the least killed in those protests. Some brave individuals on the streets of tehran. It prompted donald trump to accepted out tsend out the following tweets. Do not kill your protesters. Thousands have been killed on imprisoned by you and the world is watching. The internet on. I will leave the bit about reporters aside and remind our viewers, donald trump in his first month of office tried to ban iranians from traveling to the u. S. In the last month, actually threatened iranian cultural sites. Im not sure anybody in iran is going to spend time paying attention to the tweets. Worth mentioning, we saw those pictures of those massive funerals for general soleimani. A lot of people questioning how could you protest against the regime and support soleimani . I dont believe those two things are exclusive, especially when you talk to iranians. They will tell you that the very oppressive Iranian Regime needs to change and the u. S. Needs to get out of the region. It is a very, very vulnerable time for the iranian government as not only donald trump says the world is watching but certainly here in the gulf all eyes are on tehran tonight. Absolutely. We will talk more about the protests from a different angle around that downed jetliner. Thank you, cal perry. Theres a detail about what might have pushed irans admission of guilt. Lets go to bill neely. What has been the reaction to this in ukraine . Reporter its funny you introduced your show by saying the weekend is dominated by impeachment and iran. There is bewilderment that ukraine finds itself in the middle of both of those. Impeachment started with the president s phone call to president zelensky. So there is bewilderment. Theres grief and anger and frustration. That happened personally to us all after a tragedy. First theres grief. Then the anger. The anger here we saw it with president zelensky on camera last night is about iran, is about the denials. He said last night, if it hadnt been for those 45 ukrainian investigators on the ground gathering evidence at the crash scene, then iran, in his words, wouldnt have been sorry, it meant that iran was not allowed to, in his words, hide the truth. On his Facebook Page he put out pictures of the debris that the investigators had found full of holes from the shrapnel from the two missiles ukraine says were fired at that plane. Theres grief but also anger. Of course, they have started a judicial case for murder. Thats the word zelensky used last night. They want full investigation, full apology, full compensation from iran. Okay. That answers that. Thank you so much, billneely. Lets go to impeachment. Nancy pelosi defending her decision to temporarily hold articles of impeachment and warning of a senate coverup. Im telling you he signed on on thursday to a resolution to dismiss the case. To dismissing is a coverup. Dismissing is a coverup. If they want to go that route again, the senators who are thinking now about voting for witnesses or not, they will have to be accountable for not having a fair trial. Hans nichols is joining us from the white house. We have the speaker today also delivering a message for the president which he appears to be responding on twitter. Can you give us a bit of the back and forth and what this is about . Reporter the president has always been of two minds on ill peachme impeachment. He will say its a horrible thing to do. Other times he suggests it helps him politically. We heard from pelosi is two things. One, a defense of not going ahead and having that delay, not sending those articles of over immediately. Shes also warning its clear, that she thinks there will be political consequences for the senate if they end up having what she says is a coverup trial. We have confidence in our case and this president is impeached for life regardless of any gamesmanship on the part of Mitch Mcconnell. Its about a fair trial. They take an oath to take have a fair trial. We think that would be with witnesses and documentation. That dynamic has now the ball is in their court to do that or pay a price. Reporter the irony is the president and pelosi agree on two things. The stain of impeachment and that there could be political repercussions. The president tweeted for the first time acknowledging the stigma. Thats the word he used. He said, why should i have this stigma of impeachment attached to my name when i did nothing wrong . I wont read the rest of the tweet because its similar to what we have heard from the president before. Thats how we head into this about three weeks out of the iowa caucuses, a good ten months before we have a president ial election, and this is really what its going to come down to. All that said, there are a lot of other issues out there. We have been talking about iran. North korea is in the ether. We dont know the state of economy in november 2020. Pelosi and the president agree that impeachment is a stain and there will be political consequences for it. Thats something, i guess. Thank you for pointing that out. Joining me now, jeff mason, White House Correspondent for reuters. Welcome to you. Hans was reporting there, give me your reaction on the president s tweet about the stigma of impeachment, the stain, if you will on your sense of Nancy Pelosis reaction . I think hans laid it out well. Its true that President Trump sees it as a bad word. I thought it was interesting that Speaker Pelosi is sort of driving that home by saying, look, he will be impeached for life. Thats not going away even if the senate trial is not to the democrats liking and it doesnt lead to his removal. Thats something President Trump knows. Its true that the fact that he has been impeached has helped his fundraising. We have seen the robust numbers his campaign reported. It doesnt change the fact that he will now be one of three president s who have been impeached. Thats part of his record. Yeah. The previous two not removed as well. The mood at the white house, jeff, what is it now that Speaker Pelosi has announced these articles are heading to the senate . There has been a little bit of a hurry up and wait attitude there, waiting for this to happen. Obviously, the speaker has decided that the house is going to send them over. I think they are going to start switching into implementation mode for the strategy that they have set for his trial. Theres been back and forth about that on both sides of washington. I think there will be continue to be debate about witnesses. The president himself has sort of played out his own thinking on that when speaking to us and speaking on twitter. I think part of him would like to see witnesses, because he is eager to get the whistleblower, he said. He is eager to have hunter biden as a witness. Does he want to see john bolton and see some of the other people that the democrats would like to see . Probably not. Mitch mcconnell and other allies have advocated for having something quick. I suspect it will be it will fall along the lines of something quick and just moving on. Can you give me a sense of your time line, what happens this week, how long it takes to get the articles over to the senate and then how long until a trial would get underway . Theres been some speculation that i think Speaker Pelosi said there would be a vote about the managers, the house managers on tuesday. If that actually at least a discussion. If that happens tuesday, theoretically, the trial could start wednesday. I think that theres more speculation they will take a few more days once the articles are in the hands of the senate to get started. No doubt get started either the end of this week or the beginning of next. You mentioned john bolton. What about him with regard to Speaker Pelosi who clearly didnt rule out the possibility of having the house subpoena the former National Security adviser. We know the president has said he will invoke executive privilege. He has said he would love for everybody to testify. You went to that point to some degree. How does this play out . Does the president invoking executive privilege even come into play here . Does it have anything to do with john bolton being able to testify . Well, bolton is an interesting case for a few different reasons. He has something to say about ukraine, because he was in the middle of all of that when he was still National Security adviser. We know from previous testimony that he wanted to distance himself or disagreed, rather, is a better way of saying that with what was going on with giuliani and that outside of government process that was being led. That said, he is not an enemy of the president. Certainly, in the last week or so with whats going on in iran, you can imagine john bolton being very pleased with how the white house has handled this and having taken out soleimani. Those are two separate Foreign Policy issues. They do show sort of the tension, no doubt, that john bolton has as somebody who was an ally to some extent of the president but who did leave the white house and hasnt been there for the last several months and certainly knows a lot about ukraine. I think democrats would like to hear him talk about that. But they could potentially be disappointed if he got out and wasnt necessarily spilling a lot of dirt about the president. Then how would he counter that with fiona hill in the house hearing . Yeah. Its a great question. I suspect that, again, bolton has a lot to say about ukraine that would not be positive for President Trump. I think its important to remind viewers that that doesnt mean bolton is not a fan of the president and not an ally in terms of some of the other things he has done on Foreign Policy. I think we know certainly fiona hill is a good example. The boltons of the world and others in that arena, in that area of the National Security council and the white house did not approve of how things were going with ukraine, that particular call and Rudy Giulianis role. Okay. Jeff mason, we always approve of you. Thank you. A Government Spokesperson telling nbc news that eight rockets have struck an iraqi air base housing u. S. Soldiers. Lets go to Richard Engel who is joining us from baghdad. Richard, this was a surprise. What are you learning about it . Reporter early indications are no u. S. Casualties. The Iraqi Security services did put out a statement saying that eight rockets fell on the balad air base. There were four iraqis injured, two soldiers, two officers. No mention of other coalition or american specific casualties. This is a dangerous event. This is the kind of thing that the americans are on high alert for. They have tightened up their defenses, tightened up what force protection here. Its why the counterisis mission in this country, which is the purpose officially at least for the u. S. Troop presence in this country, has been suspended. That mission has been suspended so the american forces, coalition forces, because there are other countries here involved as well, can concentrate on protecting their bases, using the drones they would use to hunt isis and instead watching what is happening on the bases because theres so much tension right now. This incident didnt prove to be lethal. Apparently, no americans injured, certainly not killed. But if that had been the case, we would be talking about a very different story, a very different situation right now. What is the likelihood, richard, that this is an iran proxy who launched these rockets . Reporter theres been no claim of responsibility. There are a variety of armed groups in this country. The groups right now predominantly firing rockets on american bases are these armed shia militias in this country. They are the real Sticking Point at the moment. They are the real source of instability in iraq right now. They have been around for the last several years. But they are getting they have been getting stronger. They had been getting increasingly bold. Thats what started this latest cycle of violence. Its important to remember the sequence of events. A lot of people in the United States woke up to the story when the United States killed on President Trumps order the general soleimani. There had been a steady escalation from the shia militias to use rockets against american bases, particularly here in bagged dad, bhdad. They were starting to fire dozens of rockets at a time. It made the americans here very nervous. It made the americans here very angry. They started complaining to the Iraq
