He doesnt know foreign policy. He shouldnt be allowed on the debate stage. Donald trump isnt christian. Hes this. Hes that. Trump is a conman, donald trump, donald trump, donald trump, donald trump, donald trump will not become the president. Were going to start the program with another Police Shooting that has captured the nations attention. Protests arrested yesterday in charlotte, north carolina, after police shot and killed 43yearold Keith Lamont Scott. Police say he emerged from his vehicle with a gun. Scotts family has disputed the Police Account claiming he was unarmed. After that, demonstrations turned violent after people threw rocks at police. They set fire to a pile of boxes. All of this happened a day after video showed a man shooting a man who had his hands in the air when he was shot. Donald trump was asked today about that tulsa footage. To me it looked like he did everything he was supposed to do. He looked like a really good man. Maybe im a little clouded because i saw his family talking about him after the fact. You get a little different image maybe. But to me he looked like somebody who was doing what they were asking him to do. And this young officer know i dont know what she was thinking. I dont know what she was thinking. But im very, very troubled by that. We have to be very careful. These things are terrible. That was in my opinion, a terrible, a terrible situation. And weve seen others. The police are aware of that, too. The police are troubled by it too. They look it a. Did she get scared . Was she choking . What happened . Maybe people like that, people choke, people do that, maybe they cant be doing what theyre doing. Hillary clinton also commented on the latest shootings. She took a moment during her speech in orlando to address the matter as well. There is still much we dont know about what happened in both incidents. We do know we have two more anaheim add to the list of africanamericans killed by Police Officers in these encounters. It is unbearable and it needs become intolerable. Ive spoken to Many Police Chiefs and other Law Enforcement leaders who are as deeply concerned as i am. They are as deeply committed as i am. They know it is essential for the safe of our communities and our officers. So how do these latest pair of Police Shootings of africanamerican men seem to be impacting juries . Well, we talked about this yesterday. This is the second time where in just the last couple times, there have been more than one Police Shooting. And theyve broken through in a significant way. This is a huge problem in cities across the country. I thought both donald trump and Hillary Clinton handled this pretty well today. Taking a different line than hes taken in the past. A little different from his Campaign Manager and his Vice President ial running mate took a little earlier. Expressing more sympathy for the victim in the case in tulsa. And of course, Hillary Clinton who talks about it with frequency. It is something that will continue to be a topic of discussion as long as these events keep happening. Theres no question that trumps remarks were more striking than clintons. Not because he spoke with more compassion but because it is not just Kellyanne Conway. The way donald trump has largely talked about these matters. I think it is great in the face of tragedy to reflect on it. To give us a sense of how they will deal with it. It is pretty clear. It is something of a National Debate about remedies. This is still a problem that will bedevil the country. I think one of the questions is, do you think this is a systematic or a systemic problem . And one that is related to race and racial bias. It is not a miystery that a lot of them have been africanamerican men. In many cases, either unjustified or apparently unjustified. So Hillary Clinton talks about this in a more come pre hencive way than trump did you have but trump taking a very different tone today. With fewer than 50 news cycles left, Hillary Clinton seems to be making a slight shift in her messaging plan. Instead of mainly or only trying to disqualify donald trump, she is adding a positive track. Talking about what shes done and what she would do as president. Thats what we saw today. The focus was on helping people with disabilities be a bigger part of the work force. Quhablg she calls an inits cluive economy. First were going to focus jobs and incomes. Ill give more americans a chance to work alongside those without disabilities and do the same jobs for the same pay and benefits. Second. Were going to work with our colleges and universities to make them more accessible to students with disabilities. Third. Were going to partner with businesses and other stake holders to ensure those living with disabilities can get hired and stay hired. As part of that, well launch a new effort we are calling autism works to help people with autism succeed in the workplace. Fourth, lets build on the success of the americans with disabilities act by finally ratifying the United Nations convention on the rights of persons with disabilities. Long before that speech, a little before it, clinton started with an op ed highlighting her resume and framing president ial race as a choice between an economy that works for everyone and an economy that benefits well off at the expense of everyone else. We have talked on this sbhoe how clinton has struggled to articulate the theory of the case about where the American Economy stands. Were not the only ones who have noticed it. A poll has clinton with a 7point lead and a twoway matchup. 48 to 41 . That sinks to 4 poinss in a four way race. More registered said trump over clinton, 4641. You were down in orlando in the Hillary Clinton speech. How do you think she did . She did just fine in terms speaking from her heart. Ing talking about her mothers life, talking about the country. Shes talked about people shes known. It was a very moving speech in some ways. It does highlight the fact she does not reach for a way to kind of bring all the strands together and talk about how she would be a great jobs president. It is a real vulnerability for her. It was a perfectly serviceable speech. She talked about issues really important to her. I think she is vulnerable to this. Trump talks a brash game on. Jobs right now, i think a lot of voters are looking for brash. I think if she is fg to make an inclusive economy. The broad theme under which she wants to cut flesh out, she has a hot more work to do. It is a potentially powerful theme. She has not laid it all out. It is a potentially powerful theme. And he talks tough on jobs. As you know, many think that trump is by far the weaker candidate when it comes to it. The question is whether hillary can build her own argument and lay bare the weakness thats a lot of economists see. Ive been watching her simpson the early 90s. This is her last debate before monday. The last public event. Reading her body language, i think her she had in a very good place for the debate. I think she feels she is in a very good place to take down donald trump. The august fundraising numbers are out. And the headlines are many. It was the best month yet for both Hillary Clinton and donald trump. Clinton raised 58 million in august. Trump raised 40 million. Pretty remarkable since it was summertime when people arent necessarily attending fundraisers or writing checks. Clinton outspent trump nearly 21. Clinton has twice as much cash on hand although team trump is doing a victory lap because they raised 12 million in small donations. Thats 4 million more than clinton raised from those people. By comparison, barack obama raised 25 million from small donors in 2012. Mitt romney, 9. 4 million. Bad news for the vegas billionaire, adelson. He has given money but most not to trump. He and his cash are being directed toward helping other republican candidates. A little bit went to a Group Supporting trump. Of all of these, which do you think will have the most importance . Well, there are two leaked ones. The one to me that matters the most is the cash on hand. Clinton has substantially more cash on hand puts her in a better place in the home stretch. The Sheldon Adelson news will make headlines because it is a big flashy, gaudy name. That money wont be supplementing trumps relatively meager, relatively, compared to the Clinton Campaign. Relatively meager Cash Holdings is a problem going forward. If this is a close race, look at the Battle Ground states. Can the combined forces of the Trump Campaign and the rnc produce a competitive ground game based on what they believe is greater enthusiasm, efficiency. They say theyre confident that they will be super competitive in this state. It is an open question. And the proof will be on election day when we see how they do. Not just election day but with early voting. Are they well funded enough to be competitive . With the clinton folks. A huge question. We will know in fewer than 50 days. When we come back, Campaign Managers and the after the dodging questions after these words from our sponsors. Did you read every word . No, only lawyers do that. Together, were building a better california. Like a lot of news programs, we here have extended an open invitation to the president ial candidates who want to come on this program. Hillary, donald. There is always a comfy chair on our set. More often, we get on ask our pentup political questions to the Campaign Managers and other strategists and surrogates. Heres the problem. When it comes to policy questions, we dont always get a clear answer. Take Clinton Campaign chief this morning on morning joe who was asked about his bosss policy on syria. Was it a mistake to draw the red line if the president was not willing to do something when it was crossed . As you pointed out. The decision regarding that was made after she was out of office. So i think you would have to ask was she disfoinld president didnt act when the lien was crossed . I think you would have to ask her about that question. Youre here for her. So you wont discuss it . You can go on our website and read the full plan there. I think youre going to have to ask her that question. Thats a matter of policy. Im going to let her statements speak for themselves. Are not you here representing her point of view . I am indeed. And i am going to let her language speak for itself. Okay. So that was not great. But its not just robby who has some problems sometimes answering straightforward questions. Listen to trump Campaign Manager Kellyanne Conway when she was asked about her boss being a birther. How and when did donald trump conclude the president was born in the United States . Youll have to ask him that. Donald trump advocated something for five years that was a lie. Why did he do that . Youre going to have to ask him. Okay. So today, after that morning joe interview with robby, clintons Campaign Manager got a little assist from the guy held that post for president obama, that would be David Plouffe. He tweet, the Campaign Manager is to execute a Winning Strategy to secure 270 electoral votes. Not make new policy. Know the difference. So my question for you is whether David Plouffe is right or wrong. He is one quarter right. It is true. These are political operatives. Theyre not policy people. But they constantly come on the programs and say why are you asking about policy . Why are you obsessed with politics is this if their position is they can only answer political questions, they should expect political questions. But they should put out topics that people are interested. In thats not just policy but matters of controversy. I find it ridiculous with someone with the Title Campaign manage her take position, ask mr. Trump. Unless she is willing to produce mr. Trump or he is going on produce secretary clinton, i think it is a charade. I get it. If theyre saying theyre political people they should expect political questions and not criticize us for asking policy questions. I think they should answer policy questions and political questions. Theyre senior person, a couple of senior people on the campaign. They spent a lot of time with them. Theyre asking what did the candidate think about x. David plouffe mischaracterized and it said it is not their job to make new policy. Hillary clinton wrote about what she thought about the red line and engineer in her book. As has he read the book . He should read the book ask say what Hillary Clintons point of view was only. And with Kellyanne Conway, she must have some idea what his thinking was. We have a right to expect her to know. Lets be realistic. They almost always say thats their answer when they dont want to answer a tough question. Not because they dont know. Thats correct. How do you think based on the performance of the candidates over this week and heading into the debate monday, how do you think they look in terms of fighting form . I think they both need a little work and a lot of practice over the next four or five days and theyll do it in their own way. Hillary clinton will be down much of that time between now and the debate going through rigorous debate practice and hopefully a whole series of mock debates. Donald trump will do it his own way which will be, i wont call it a relaxed approach but it will be different. He wont cram himself full of facts and figures but he will have a sense of the strategy he wants to take into the debate. I think both of them have to be a little bit nervous. This is a more up predictable environment. The topics are very broad that lester holt has laid out and we dont quite know what donald trump will be like. So i think there has to be nervousness on both sides. Margaret . How do you think theyre headed trajectory wise . What i think were seeing with clinton this week is that she is trying to project a sort of calm, prepared, paced approach. Sticking to the facts. Her whole appearance at the u. N. , trying to show off her statesman like credentials. She wants t remain calm and unflappable. I think just as much as she can convince herself that she can do it on monday. If she can go in there in an, im not going to take bait mode, thats what she wants what theyre afraid and and why everyone will tune in is to see if she can pull it off. In terms of what you know about how theyre dealing with debate prep. Lets stay with this topic. How do you think she is just technically speaking, going become the process of trying to get ready for the unpredictability of donald trump . In many ways, im going to give you some educated guesses. We know more about what shes not doing than what she is actually doing. Theyve been pretty careful about not sprinkling in as many details as we all want. But we know that she is not off at a resort outside las vegas and debate camp. We know she is trying avoid president obamas ritual and mistakes from 2012. And we know the way shes traditionally done debate prep is to go through everything. She knows her own policy. To try to be prepared not only to defend her own positions or explain her own positions but to check him and cross him if either he says something that she knows is not true or if the debate moderator himself fails to go in that direct. So i expect thats a lot of what she is doing. Does she to it in the kitchen . Is there a tent set up in the backyard . We dont know those details. The campaign is holing that really tight. You made comment when you were answering marks question that using this about, donald trump is handling his prep in a relaxed fashion. It seems like he is handling in a relaxed fashion. What do you think the dangers and the strikes are going about debate prep, in a much more, not nearly as rigorous, lets say, or structured a way as we know that Hillary Clinton generally does. Lets start with the positive. He is very good in live tv settings. Or very often is. And he demonstrated that in a hot of the republican debates. He is comfortable in that environment. He knows how to put somebody off balance and he enjoys doing that. In the performance sense, he come to it with a kind of naturalness. He spent many years in reality tv and he likes that environment. The risk is that this is 90 minutes. There is no break. It can be very substantive. Depending on how the flow of the debate goes. He will have to produce deeper or more complex answers about some of his policies or more coherent details. He will have greater detail skating across the top as he might have done. So i think that is the bigger rick for him. Okay. Were going to talk more about the debate. Well be back after this quick break. When heartburn hits, fight back fast with tums smoothies. It starts dissolving the instant it touches your tongue. And neutralizes stomach acid at the source. Tum tum tum tum smoothies only from tums lets just get a sdwich peoplor something. You dont just learn how to drive. Or solve the worlds problems. Be a dad. Or something and we dont just make sandwiches or something we handslice avocado, pull smoked chicken, bake fresh foccacia and craft every sandwich clean from top tbottom. Theres nothing or something about it. Panera. Food as it should be. If i am the spoiler in this race, yippee this is something that needs spoiling in a big way. 50 of americans right now when they go to register to vote are registering as independent. Where is that representation . It is not from clinton. It is not from trump. It is from me. Thank you. That was a highly animated libertarian candidate, gary johnson, at a breakfast in our nations capital. Hosted by yours truly. You just pointed out to me donald trump in an interview that will be here tonight, we have a little transkrimt where he is calling for stop and friction to try to deal with particularly the africanamerican communities. Talk about what kind of waves it will be. Especially in the wake of what has happened. That trump is turning to stop and frisk. We were talking about what clintons approach may be and what trumps vulnerabilities may be. Where you have him speaking with black voters at churches talking about, you know, Excessive Police violence. How this is a problem. Maybe some people should not be Police Officers. It is not making the stop and friction. So this is a different audience. But it is all on video and it will all be brought up at the debate. How does he square that under questioning . Dan, we talked earlier with the way trump spoke about the shooting. He is prior to this largely trying to cast himself as the law and order candidate. Highly supportive of Law Enforcement. Highly supportive and now we have this stop and frisk piece of news. How do you think it has handled over a long stretch of time, these questions go to the core of criminal justice about big cities many america. How do you think trump has handled them . I guess i would say, i think his position, his broad position is quite clear. It was made cheer at the convention dwhe his acceptance speech. He was the law and order candidate. Thats the broad message he wanted to send. When he tempered that. The softening of that very hard edge law and order review. He is and wants to be the law and order candidate. A democrat who supports Hillary Clinton said to me today. She thought it was going very well. Better than last weeks polling in the wake of the problems she had over the weekend. But they said, you know what . It could be that this is such an overwhelming change election that there is nothing we can do. We can run a perfect race and donald trump could overrun us. Do you get sense that is a prevailing view . This may be a trump year and theres nothing clinton can do . No. I think clinton and her campaign are dedicated to the idea that the infrastructure, the planning, all that does make a difference. Particularfully places like florida, pennsylvania, ohio maybe. Thats not entirely clear yet. Youve seen the polling get a little bit better since the initial total fallout of pneumonia gate which was a really dumb move on their part. To the sfenlt she is beginning to put a little space there. If their presumption is that they can push that a little bit further because theyre doing work to turn out people who those polls are not building into in the prediction models of, then they can feel a little better than they could a week ago. I dont think that theyre saying this is a runaway or they cant do anything about it. I think they firmly believe all that stuff that theyre doing, the manpower on the ground. The Traditional Campaign stuff makes a difference. How much of a difference we dont know yet. A lot of analysts and people in the clinton camp say states where trump is doing well, like eye with and ohio, a lot of white voters there. In the states where hes doing well, where hes doing better, like florida where i am, what else is going on . What else is helping trump besides a lot of white voters . Well, florida, as you know, it is always close and it will be close. I dont think anybody in eat campaign thought that one over the other would get a big advantage in florida. That was the closest i recall in 2012 and may be the closest this time around. I think the fact he is doing well there is fine. To be expected. In some of the other states, i think it is a function of the percentage of the electorate. Those who have College Degrees or dont have College Degrees. The higher the percentage, the more challenges he has. Youre the dean. Im going to close with you. In this nbc wall street journal poll it says people were asked various things. What concerns them most with donald trump telephone top of the list is him not having the right temperament to be commander in chief. Then his comments about muslims. At the bottom is his failure to release his tax returns. Looking at that poll can we deduce theres no way well see his tax returns before election day . I think even if that number had been twice or three times that 6 , i dont think we would see the tax returns. I hes made decision that those will stay hidden as long as possible and long after the november 8 polling. I think it is interesting and reflective that the things we talk about are not relatable to people. It is not necessarily going to be a voting issue. And i think hes concluded that more harm could come from releasing them than not. Is there anything we can do about this . Those who think it is important . I think he has decided that there is more down side in releasing them than there ever could be in making them public. All right. Those are two very depressing answers on a topic that is quite important. Ow hard its gonna fa. engine revs the things it does to your parade. Weve got a saying about rain, too when it rains. Joining us, pat griffin who is an undecided voter regarding donald trump. His partys donald trump. Democratic strategist, form he Campaign Press secretary for president obama and a big supporter of Hillary Clinton. Thank you both for being here. If Hillary Clinton asks you for one piece of advice going into the debate, what would you tell her . I would tell her that she needs to hold donald trump accountable in the same way that she is being held accountable in this election. People are still treating donald trump like a celebrity host who, a different standard applies to during this campaign. She should make clear if the moderator doesnt ask him questions that are just as tough on domestic and foreign policy, that she raises those questions directly to him. Pat . If donald trump called you and said, pat, what i am a doing well that should i bring to the debate, what would you tell him . I would say which donald trump is showing up . Dr. Jekyll or mr. Hyde . Hillary clinton shows up usually acting like tracy flick from my favorite movie, election. She can spell every nation in africa backwards but shes not good at connecting. I think one of the reasons donald trump is in this thing is he has to consistently remind people he is the candidate of change. Something she can never, ever be. So pat, let me ask to you flip this question around and ask you what you think the one thing, or the most important thing is that donald trump needs on avoid doing. What would be the biggest mistake comake on monday . I think the problem is, john, that donald trump is going to be whichever donald trump he is comfortable being. Weve seen him in debates. He kind of likes this. I think if this devolves into a food fight between Hillary Clinton and donald trump, it is like that traffic wreck on the highway. People will stop and see the wreck. Nobody hangs around much to watch it get cleaned up. To watch him be president ial but at the same time he is a candidate who will change things in washington. Thats one of the reasons Hillary Clinton cant get off the runway here. She is a terrible candidate. Exactly the wrong time and she is doing way too much policy wonking than she is. Trump has to spect and convince people he is prepared for the big chair at the big desk. Ben, i ask you the same question if you were working with Hillary Clinton. I know youre not. What would you counsel her to avoid . Whats the biggest mistake she could make . Well, having worked on the last president ial, where mitt romney lost the second two debates was in that he talked to the moderator instead of the audience back home biffle litigating rules and followups with the moderator instead of looking directly at the camera and telling the American People what she will do to get economy moving again for average people. That would be an enormous mistake. All right. Do you think she has a risk if she gets drawn into too personal a confrontation with him . Getting down in the mud with the pig . You get dirty, the pig likes it . I think donald trump is not a typical candidate. She is not going to play on his level. He has made clear that he is willing to get personal. Not only about her but the moderator. Thats certainly unconventional of thats where she has to turn to the audience and use Donald Trumps words against him. All right. Pat, Republican Senate candidates including kelly ayotte are doing pretty well in the senate contests. Why do you think that is and whats your prognosis on whether they will deep majority . Wroths i dont think we have to worry that trump and the rules. The environment, the meteorological ring around this race has gotten better for senate republicans. Guys like rob portman, he has done a good job oriole pushing himself away from this trump meteorological force at the top of the ticket. Theyve been able to find their way and to make it look better for republicans. So i think in many of the cases, the better the top of the ticket does, the better it does down ticket and these races are tightening up. There is more and more money coming in. Republican candidates are raising more than ever before. I think these races look way more competitive in places we didnt think they would be a few weeks ago. Rattle off the states you think your party will win to take back the majority. I would start with illinois. Thats at the top. I go to wisconsin. I think well win new hampshire. The poll there had ayotte down 2 today. Florida is really tight. Some of these races coming to the mat that we didnt anticipate. Mitt romney rushed to endorse donald trump. You know what youll get if you reelect candidates for the senate. So your list got you pretty close to the majority but not all the way there. It sounds like youre saying it is not a sure thing the democrats will take the senate back. I would never say that. Ive been in some really tight races. We thought we were going to win. It came down to the wire. It all comes down to turnout. It really comes down to the turnout of the obama coalition. If you voted for the president the last two times, if you believe we need to continue on our progress of providing Health Care Access to people, getting the economy working for people. Weve seen the minimum wage go up for the first time in a long time. This is an election you need to vote in. Let me ask you the question for months and months it seem like part of the reason why he closed the gap a bit in the polling is that republicans have come home. How solid is that that trump has reassured motor of the members of his party . Is it solid or are they still a flight risk . There are still folks that have reservations about trump. The key to this things trump has an opportunity monday night on convince people in this country that escapable of being president. It is not just attacking Hillary Clinton. We know he can do that. We saw him do to it 17 other republicans. I think his challenge is to remind people again and again and again hillary shl a poster child for everything wrong with washington. She has after all been there almost as long as the Washington Monument. That helps trump. I think one of the problems hillary has is trying on convince people that she can be something other than a creature of washington. Thats the dynamic in this race right now. And i think trumps big opportunity, and i say big opportunity. Is to behave himself. No checking. And to try to make not every single point. Hillary clinton is a better debater. She has won this in terms of expectations. Trump needs to show up. Be substantive enough and make the case for change or more of the same. Thats whats on the ballot. Not quite as long as the Washington Monument of thats not accurate. Other than Hillary Clinton is not barack obama, why is she having trouble getting the enthusiasm out . I think for a lot of people like young voters, they tune in late. They tune in post labor day. Theyre back in school. Theyre looking at the race. Youve seen people like bernie sanders. Others fighting, go out and get younger voters. People are familiar with her. Shes been in public life for a long time. But now the audience is tuning in to the debates. If she can convince people, not only of her qualifications but the fact that donald trump is unsteady and dangerous and wo d would. Thank you both. Well talk about high income voters. Energy lives here. This morning the latest slice poll. This is for those of annual income of 100,000 or more. Hillary clinton leads with 41 of the vote. While trump carries 47 . Compare this to 2012. 54 to obamas 44 . Why do we gary how rich people vote . Thats a great question. When you compare what we found here, which is clinton is in very good shape come fired romney, you compare i had to our poll of less educated voters. The coalition of those who support him by strong americanures and win the election. Rich people dont live up to republicans and in this case, Hillary Clinton seems to have the advantage. Talk about the poll and the schism. It seem in addition to education, it is one of the biggest schisms. Absolutely. Theres been a divide in the electorate during this election that weve seen for months. They found the difference between white educated women and white down scale men is dramatic and it is growing. If you look at our poll, you see the same thing. Wealthy we will educated voters, generally well educated, supporting her by 4 points. White down scale voters, less educated voters supporting him. This goes way beyond the votes. Take a look at people like me. Among the wealthier voters, you have clinton with an 11point advantage. Right . Among down scale white less educated voters, trump plus 16. Another thing of critical importance, the fight for the middle which is a. You have high income voters, i believe clinton would do a job by 9 points. Trump by 18. It goes on to shares my values. It goes on to toward lead the country on day one. It is like there are two americas. Two groups of voters as john edwards might have said. But it is unbelievable they look at the candidates in such different ways. So an interesting question among the wealthy people. We asked which would be better for your investments . What was your result and were you as surprised as i was . I was pretty surprised. We saw that trump holds the advantage. They said that trump would do better for their investments. Then we looked at those people that thought one of the candidates or the other would do a better job their investments. For those who said trump would do a better job, nose agreed that trump would make them richer, he still doesnt carry 17 of those. 17 said they would rather lose money than vote for trump. That includes those voting for clinton and 10 run decided. So it is quite something to see such a divide even among wealthy americans. Dougon our poll, take 20 seconds. You watch all the polls closely. How would you look at i nationally. . Right now i would say that clinton has a little momentum. While we were in the field over the four days, we dont like to go through this in git we definitely saw some Movement Toward clinton. If you look at the National Polling right now, it does appear there was a dip during the week of her Health Problems where she had undo you think lay bad week. But it is moving back to the normal place in the race. About a 4 to 5 point advantage nationally for clinton other. States will carry along. It is really the time, if you look at elections when if there is going to be any movement, it happens then. Thank you so much. As always. Great being your partner.
