And our bags and we raced out. Lauren, one of the other people from the tour came running screaming to tell us, intrepid people. All of our group and we came out here. Just hung around with the locals. President biden on the global stage in india right now for the g20 summit with some big issues on the agenda. Also, big developments in the Georgia Election interference case. A newly released report revealing the former president couldve had many more codefendants, including some prominent supporters. The very latest on the search for an elusive escaped inmate who has as it does not kokuka, just hours away from a possible date with the History Books at the u. S. Open. Im gonna take you there live, as well. It is all coming up. He want to deal with the Breaking News that america and the deadly, it is just 1000 people are dead and more than 1200 are injured after a catastrophic cheek centering in the alice i mountains. The city americas she popular tourist destination. The 6. 2 is the strongest hurricane at the area and more than 100 years. Cnns matt bradley has more. The death toll and injury toll increases its already skyhigh. We have heard over the past couple of hours that the death toll has exceeded 1000. The injuries have now exceeded 1200. Those numbers are likely to increase in the coming hours and days as Rescue Workers actually take bodies out of the wreckage. That is what they working on right now the epicenter was about five and a mild way from the historic city americas. We see Rescue Workers struggling to get into the mountains, into those more remote villages, constrict about even more rheometry material. Adobe blocks, and reinforced concrete. The kind of thing that just is not up to snuff when it comes to tremors of the size. There has already been a lot of damage or more urban areas. The historic city america, the beloved medina, the old city with lots of Winding Alleyways had seen plenty of discretion so far. Most of it is intact but a lot of Historic Buildings have been badly, badly,. Damaged the Rescue Effort is working. We have been seeing the military and local authorities trying to reach some of these areas. Trying to get some of the destroyed buildings to take people out. I think that in the coming days and weeks were probably gonna see that death toll increasing. Im here in turkey right now where there was an earthquake back in february. We saw amazing sites when i was covering this. People being removed out of the wreckage after five, six, seven days. That is the kind of hope that a lot of Rescue Workers in morocco are holding out as they were all night long, tirelessly, to try to recover survivors. Our thanks to matt bradley for that. Joining me now is the Vice President of humanitarian affairs to talk more about this, deep mila, thank you so much for joining us on this. We appreciate. It you said earlier today that so many moroccans were already struggling under the pressure in that country. Now, after this catastrophic earthquake, Hundreds Of Thousands of people in that country have lost everything. Give me a sense of what people are dealing with right now. It is an absolutely devastating and standing situation. People are dealing with a law. It includes physical damage, emotional damage, and psychological damage, as well. Hundreds of thousands have been sleeping out in the open. We have been hearing from our colleagues and partners, people are scared to go back inside. Mediterranean needs at the moment are huge. Lets say the Rescue Operations, which we just heard about, they are hampered by damaged roads and bridges. As we know, the high Atlas Mountains are not an easy access, even on the best of days. The mountains, some of the towns in these Mountain Areas which are very heavily impacted are very difficult to access. As the search and Rescue Operations are proceeding, the humanitarian action in morocco is really well coordinated by local authorities and various agencies coordinated to respond to the Emergency Needs of people especially vulnerable groups such as women and girls. You have helped with Earthquake Response in places such as india, indonesia, as well. These are, in certain instances, more rural. When you think about the epicenter of this quake, as you just mentioned, some of which, areas where they are harder to access. What is the plan to reach the people in need their . Those who may need help . Absolutely. First and foremost, for the buildings near the epicenter, they were not built. They were not built to withstand shaking of this level. Many of the roads are filled with boulders, and rubble, this makes it more difficult. Right now we essentially need all hands on deck so we can support care morocco and so many other ngos with medical facilities. We have to work parallel with certain Rescue Operations and helping people with immediate needs which include hot meals, safe drinking water, emergency shelter. Medical needs, hygiene capacity. Especially helping men and girls. And lets say this is the immediate thing. The other thing i have learned from our engagement with various and grace across others in turkey and other parts in the world there is a lot of attention in holiday when the headlines failed a needs of the people are not being served fully. We need to continue supporting not only the immediate but also the recovery helping people to rebuild their lives. Many have lost everything. Some of them even their emotional strength strength and confidence. Thank you for joining us. Such important message. As we see the court happening here in turkey, iran, other countries that do not necessarily have the machinery needed to rebuild. As mcleod these resources . Are they getting what they mean . The authorities morocco really taking the lead in a four coordinated response. This is what we hear. They are coordinating the response. Other regions are coming. A lot of solidarity from the world. Support has been coming in. I want to believe that morocco will have all that it takes to withstand this terrible tragedy and how people come back on to their feet soon as possible. To make this happen we have to ensure our interest does not die often table quickly. This will take time to rebuild. Thank you so much for the work that you continue to do. We appreciate. A are, i the president is turning his thoughts to the people of morocco on day one of the g20 summit in new delhi. Earlier he released the following statement. Quote, i am deeply saddened by the loss of life and devastation caused by the earthquake in morocco. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those impacted by this terrible hardship. The Biden Administration is in contact with moroccan officials. We are working expeditiously to ensure american citizens in rock or safe and we stand ready to provide any necessary assistance for the moroccan people. Nbcs mark marin is joining us now from you dearly with the latest from the g20. We spoke yesterday. Obviously, since, then this catastrophic tragedy at a morocco. Hearing the president address that as he is in india with this g20. Talk us through what else we heard today from the president . What stood out . Well, yasmin whenever you and i are talking about President Biden and his Foreign Policy we are, usually, talking about war and peace. What the president is doing to support ukraine as it deals with russias continued invasion. The g20 summit, in particular, all the summit that the president attends over the course of the year is much more about dollars and cents. Its interesting today, the big headline, it, again is the case in which President Biden is translating on The World Stage something that has been really important with his domestic policy agenda at home. Specifically today it has been all about infrastructure. The United States, some of our key european allies as well as the host, india, and saudi arabia, a big part of what they are now calling the european Middle East India corridor. This is an effort to take existing infrastructure, such as ports and railways, expand on a build on carrying them from europe, into the middle east, on to india. Why is this important . Its about trying to deal with inflation. Trying to deal with supply chains. Trying to provide Additional Energy assistance with some new cables which will be put under water, as well as expanding broadband access. President biden, today, calling this a big deal. We spoke earlier today in new duly with what the president say with this announcement. Together with our partners we are working to mobilize the trillions of investment needed to close infrastructure gaps around the world. Including the formation of a new investors form that the United States will host in a couple of weeks. Lets continue to work as one to seize this moment in history. To maximize our collective investments. Finding new partners to unlock new capital. When we invest in low and middle income countries, all countries benefit. Yasmin, what makes the g20 summit so interesting to cover is, unlike a lot of the other summit weve talked about throughout the year which are primarily and exclusively the u. S. And its closest allies, this is a setting where you do see some of our geopolitical competitors, lets say, even adversaries like russia. Did other big headline coming out of today as we are seeing a joint statement come out from the g20 about the war in ukraine. It is much more watered down. A little bit softer in terms of its tone and language from what we saw a year go. This speaks to the difficult dynamic that the Biden Administration has tried. Trying to pull common language so there was a statement. Certainly, they couldve seen some stronger language. Leonard zelenskyy, president of ukraine, not invited to participate this year, unlike last year, as well. Thank you, we appreciate. It we are back, everybody, in just 60 seconds with big developments out of georgia in the election interference case there. A big loss for Donald Trumps former chief of staff, mark meadows. A former trump chief of staff, mark meadows, filing a notice to appeal a judges decision but denied a request to move to federal court. That could, potentially, cast doubt on for hesitant on trumps chances of wanting to do the same. The decision is coming amidst a release of reports by the initial Special Grand Jury in Fulton County. It revealed, you can see the list, theyre 21 edition of people reprimanded for trying to but not ultimately indicted. That list includes current South Carolina senator, lindsey graham. Ford or florida senator Kelly Loeffler and david perdue, as well. Responding to this release just yesterday. I called around different states, including georgia, as a sitting United States senator, chairman of the judiciary committee. I eventually certify the election in all states, including georgia. I did not find any evidence of mass voter fraud. I did have concerns about the mailin ballot system. We cannot criminalize senators doing their job when they have a constitutional Work Ornament to fulfill. We are opening up pandoras box here. Kelly loeffler and david perdue have also denied wrongdoing. We want to bring in the current host of the Talking Feds Podcast to talk about this. We want to ask you a few things, harry. First and foremost, what does this indicate to you . Right . We know mark meadows it will appeal the judges decision to move the case to federal court. What does it say to you about the trajectory here . The initial decision from the judge to deny meadows requests a to move the thing federal . Its mainly says to me is the other five people who are planning to do it, three georgia electors, jeff clark, and trump, almost certainly have very little chance of exceeding, because the reasoning that the judge used, if you apply it even superficially to the Conduct Charge against those other five in the indictment. They are, it really doesnt fly at all. Its an interesting situation, however, because back in Fulton County, dodge mcafee said maybe he needs to let the whole removal process play out, including appeals. He has a right to an appeal. The other five will as well, to avoid the uncommonly situation if the 11th circuit i this, and they are now being tried. So, the second thing its adjusts to me is we may now be having three groups. The first to, first speedy trial, everyone else, and the six people who have had been fighting, who will be fighting for removal. I think they wont make it. And when you talk about three, four, iterations of a fourmonth trial, it starts to get pretty head spinning. Yeah. That is exactly what i was thinking, how much of a headache this is, really, to manage for the Fulton County the asa are taking a look at this thing, the scope of it all, really. Lets talk about this list of 21. Because there is a real difference between having evidence to say okay, theres enough evidence to indict these folks. And we note from this ninepage report, this grand jury heard from 75 separate witnesses. Yet. The other grand jury, that ended up indicting former president and all of his codefendants, i believe, only heard from nine witnesses, right . Remember the 150 plus witnesses mentioned by this tape during chesebros hearing just a couple of days ago. When you think about that, what goes to the decisionmaking to say okay, there is enough evidence to indict. But do we move forward with the charges . And then, why not, with these 21 . Its a great question. You put your finger on exactly, yasmin. Typically, a typical process, as a prosecutor, you have determined already, you can prove this beyond a reasonable doubt. At which point you ask a grand jury to give alimited endorsement of saying there is probable cause. This was the opposite, because of the Special Grand Jury. First, they say there is probable cause. Now, we are all in here, where fani willis has to decide, fine, but is there enough to bring the case . And white wouldnt you, for any of 26 reasons that would have played out in a different process, and he wouldnt even have asked a grand jury. Theres a certain kind of evidence problems. Maybe they have made a good presentation and you believe. It or, you know what . Its just too much. Im fighting off this huge thing here. So i really need a sitting u. S. Senator as well . So, there is very merry reasons and here, and that normally, what happened has been come to bear before. You tweeted that my friend bona fide members of the alleged conspiracy listed by the Special Grand Jury, but not ultimately, as we know now, and cited. Why those two in particular . Well, that is the fact of the matter, especially clennett metro. Very culpable, but not so georgia centric, and he sought ruben has made the good point that maybe, that would be a reason. We far field, what sticks out to me about clyde mitchell. She is very involved in georgia stuff, and she is not even, unlike flynn, flynns, im and indicted coconspirator Fulton County, Clara Mitchell isnt. To me, if im closing my eyes, playing pin the tail of a donkey, because thats really what it is, about who may be cooperating, she is a strong candidate. Harry lippman for us, as, always there.
