in business and over 4500 shows, the independent has become one of san francisco's live music venues, ploys over 75 people, many of who have been with us for over 15 years. in 2016 i took over as general manager and partner at the pearl one of the most unique bases in san francisco and anchor in the growing dog patch neighborhood. i helped venue that not only has beautiful weddings but place to nonprofits for meetings as well as fundraising events. the pearl ploys many people many of whom started with us on day one. in 2018, i joined the satisfy a denord taking over an existing venue now 115 was a different challenge. how do we bring 21st century without losing the look and feel of landmark buildings. the answer is with care and determination two things that mark my career in the local industry. my profession first professional with the entertainment commission was in 2003 since we know. working to mitigate issues with the neighborhoods around my venues have grown and we've had to grow to become more integral if not disruptive community. the bonds that we've built with the city and neighborhood is what makes us, as well as local entertainment industry succeed. i'm asking activist. specifically as a queer person of dollar working in the industry, i'm fortunate to have experienced the industry but also experienced its challenge and inequities, a sad reality is that the thousands of workers who facilitate its success are those that face barriers and abuse and marginization. the fact that we've been displaced is and one which has ripple affects for the tourist industry and everyone who livers here. when faced with occupational hazard, unpaid wages and harassment, many workers in the city have no representation or recourse if they're in the books at all. for a decade, i organized an annual restaurant and bartender inindustry event to identify common issues. since the pandemic, the challenges have been compounded by a slow recovery that has left many of us reluctant to return to jobs. business owners are experiencing staffing shortages never before seen. if our vibrant industry is to survive to make sure that they're safe and inclusive is key. in addition to that as essential to this industry future health and sustainability. i have observed the work of the entertainment commission for many years and feel that while current commissioners understand many of these challenges having a voice that reps many is essential. even more so, because this is an industry that has work of the union. my voice and experience will not compliment the work it will expand the focus. one can see many ways in which i have done can aid in these efforts. in particular my perspective from the culture district and network which serves to conform alignment with department sxds commission to see preserve and lift up our most vulnerable communities, i feel can be an ses with industry enterprises and communities in which they operate. the many communities life into the business. through his leadership and general charm, i'm happy to report cafe denorth is on a solid path to recovery and better than it ever was. in last month, we hosted over 20 live concerts and events. john stepped to provide cafe denorth because he believes you make the city better by hosting safe and entertainment experiences. that's why why it's my sincere hope that you grateful to the work of my legislative on our team, frances, i think that most of the candidates taking their time to talk with us and help us better understand who you are and what your agendas are as you plan to be on the entertainment commission. for those who don't know me, i group in china town and northbeach and a lot of bars my home is located on green street which there are like 3 bars right around that corner. and really china town and northbeach have a lot of entertainment and events, festivals. as you can imagine for both chinese new year or autumn moon and all sorts and the same goes for northbeach festival. i think entertainment is important to our economy and taournism. to help us to guide us especially through this pandemic. and i'm going to talk about my perspective of what i'm looking for in entertainment commission and is that, from base on the constituents that i had few months ago, was that he's a bar owner in downtown, and i have asked how, business going? how is the industry going? and you know, at that time our state senator had a legislation in the state that was going to a extend bar business until 4:00 am beyond existing 2:00 am, it was his second attempt but still it didn't get past and approved. so my question was, would that happen better if beyond 2:00 am and going to 4:00 am would that help the business and industry in downtown recovery too and all sorts. and their answer was no, because the shortage of workers, you know, already can sustain until 2:00 am. it dawned on me, it's not just about those organizing events or owning, you know, bars or restaurants, and really creating trying to sustain in this, entertainment industry but also the workers and the workers that actually need to figure out a way that they can feel safe and have living wage and be able to come back and return work and it's the reason i have to say among all, very very excellent and qualified candidate. i have to say steven torres qualifications and really just a point of view thinking about workers, you know how do they really fit in this situation in this dynamic as we move forward in san francisco and economy, recovery. that really resonates positions seat one or two. i was formerly incarcerated at the age of 17. after 16 years after being commuted by governor brown in 2018. during my incarceration i worked as a counselor, helped fellow inmates, my incarceration had given birth to my community to help break the cycle of poverty and incarceration. since my release three years ago, i've been pursuing my bachelor's degree in uc berkeley. and developing professional skills job placement or skilled development or mentorship. and on campus i'm part of the fellowship where we're successful obtaining a 4 million dollars to support underground cell activity to support system impact individuals and formerly incarcerated individuals gain access to higher education. most recently, i got hired by the public work withing alameda public defender's office. most recently i completed the fellowship by helping the identify the housing crisis and solutions and reenter in san francisco. at the conclusion with recommendation to the district attorney's office. so i'll bring to the reentry council as formerly incarcerated individual experience. i'm extremely passionate because i recognize how difficult it is and i look for seat 1 and 4 of the reenter council. i was released in august of 2020. since my release, i have dedicated my time and support and my time since my release i've dedicated my time to support the community and work onseting a strong foundation for my life. i've been working at five keys for the past two years where i have been able to support people struggling with homelessness and other issues. i use my time to provide friendly ear, and give advise and guidance when appropriate. also working responding to covid concern those most affected by the pandemic have resourced needed to in order to recover with dignity. i have also volunteered to support young people who are working on a path that may lead them to system. >> take your time. >> young people who are working, help support young people who are walking on a path na may lead them to systemic involvement. i'm also in the process of setting my consulting agency. to support community agencies to create environment that not only fofters a supportive environment for people in the reenter journey but also creates meaningful opportunities to grow and prosper with those years that i've experienced in growing in and out of the system. i've had experience to see what works and what does not work. for those of us in the reenter journey, i stand with you applying for the reenter council. before i learn what worked and does not work because i have a support, i have support that works and doesn't, and because of that, it allows me to expand my wings and try new things, knowing that i am not alone. le that together, we will succeed reenter is a team effort. it takes the probation system, opportunities resources and support system to find that pathway that leads to building a strong foundation that will prevent supervisor. i'm andra. i was released from prison after serving 32 years. i was a g-o reenter program where i applied to take construction course at the asian neighborhood design. i graduated in 2016 and got injured. in 2018, there was a merger with success center and i was promoted to case manager where i worked as a case manager for three years dealing with as well as those coming back into society. at this particular time, i was just promoted to program manager for a new program where we have credible messengers. and the reason why i applied for this position is this, me being a person that came out into reentry not knowing what i was going to do, and what was my next step and talking to those out there in society, whether i'm retraining at treasure island or speaking at hospitality house. and feeling the pain of those coming out, their complaints, them telling me about how people always have ideas with no solutions. i'm ready to join a panel that will make it easier for those to term, i have seen the change here in the city of san francisco. and we store tiff justice here in san francisco. i have used my live experience and tied to the community to begin bridging the gap and restore to justice support to some of the under served communities in our cities. so let's talk about that a little bit. i'm a community activist i'm a equal change who serves all communities of the city. i'm a community health worker, i'm a case manager, a mentor, i facilitate healing groups to help facilitate healing circles with young adults trying to reintegrate. my time, we have kicked in multiple doors and way to see recovery and provided more than one way of recovery, we have bridged gaps to community health, community base organizations all through san francisco, bridging the gaps with them and probation reentry division of the probation development. we've already gone a step forward to bring spirituality to under served neighborhoods being in collective with churches here in san francisco bringing another way of reentry and support to the communities. so now, for me, it's all about unfinished business. i'm running again for the community to continue to fight the fight that i was elected to do years ago. now is the time to continue to build for our city's future. i know there are new challenges and also new circumstances. but san francisco will always be the place i call home. they will always be the place that i stand in the for front fighting for the next person because i am san francisco. i'm jabari jackson, i take pride in being the voice of the voiceless and on to our next applicant. jamila mccoy. >> good morning, supervisors. chan, peskin, mandelman. i'm jamila mccoy. i'm looking to be considered for any one seats, 2, 3 and 4. in qualifying for seat number 1, i stand before you as a survivor. i survived, i survived sexually assaulted, raped, robbed and kidnapped all at the age of 15. for two and a half decades after the assault, i stayed being a victim to the traumas i suffered to the traumas i suffered from in sigh lance. i let severe ptsd, rape syndrome and the streets take control of me. being that these illnesses went untreated, i chose to self medicate in order to escape my reality. this begin my 20 plus year crime spree, this lead to multiple state and most resent federal convictions. i did all the crimes to keep the residivism rising. i was mistaken for service provider. a conversation was struck with another provider and i was asked, do you have 18 months for yourself? and i had never given thought to the fact. i had given the state 18 months or the 3-year sentence and then additional nine months doing two different parole violations. i asked what do i have to do for these 18 months. he said stay free but go to school. and with the same dedication you put in to hustling, let's try to put this into the post work certification or the chw program at san francisco city college. he said, you can use your life experience to try to help change somebody else's path. that provider became my mentor. and i became the only female on all male case load for volunteers of america. so i enrolled at san francisco city college. i obtained my a a and finished the caw program and help surrender all of my charges. in 2001 february, i got a compassionate release. so now i stand before you today, i started at san francisco goodwill bay goodwill, october 11, 2021 as a career advisor over reentry. now 9 months later, i was promoted. i now manage 5 programs at the cast on the cast program manager of the specialized life center, young adult court rise, which is reentry to successful employment. we have a new program which is work accelerated for fund programming. currently the average individual faces 4 3000 barriers when transitioning home from prison. in my job role, i helped all involved clients gain access and vocational training courses via workforce development programs. i oversee all referral from adult probation, pretrial and all of my clients that serve. all cbos that serve. i'm connecting those clients with resources aimed to help those same barriers that i faced when i transitioned home. helping each remove one barrier at a time to claim the stability that resonates with them. i'm looking to join this council to create this change, i want to be part of creating legislature that changes the faces of reentry. i want to change barriers getting access to mental healthcare when released. a lot of mental health goes untreated and it's time to address that change and change that statistic. i've been attending women subcommittee meetings direct services sub committees and reenter tree councilmembers hoping to be part of this panel. thank you. >> thank you, ms. mccoy thank you for sharing and what sources were needed. i've been out of incarcerate after, dedicated my life to my education and will be finishing my bachelor degree in liberal arts. i have worked as a prementor, a housing specialist, a supervisor healthcare worker and currently as a coach manager for a local nonprofit program specifically for those who have had been justice involved. my goal is given an opportunity to sit in the reentry council is to help those directly out of the inrars racing. in collaboration and nonprofit and as a platform to share my own experience to see change some of the common misconception that society has about incarcerated people. >> thank you, mr. foshay. why don't we move on to linda husrshman. >> good morning, supervisor peskin, chang and mandelman. i'm linda and i'm the direct result where i am right now, is because of services that the city in adult probation. from when i decided to put my best foot forward to get my recovery right. i just got sick of it and i almost died from fentanyl. the day after i mother died on november 13, 2020, i was shamefully still addict today crack cocaine. i purchased the next night what i thought was crack cocaine and something told me to put it in my ashtray and it turned orange. i almost left my 21-year-old daughter without a mother or grandmother. i decided i would never do crack cocaine again. reaching out to my case manager from the time i put myself in a house to my struggle to getting a shelter in place hotel to being on and off ankle monitor, getting cleaned during the pandemic is one of the most difficult things i've done in my life. and me dedicated myself and basically keeping my trust to my probation officer, my therapist, my case manager and my career advisor at goodwill that all did their part in helping me get move on from addiction. because it's an every day fight, recovery is a verb. so i knew deep down inside after struggling for years and years as an addict, that always lead to homelessness which always lead to crime. that if i could receive this, proper support and services to sleigh my inner dragons that the addiction will go away. there is not one person in the streets that is not suffering from some kind of trauma a turbulence in their life and loss. i want to be part of the solution of helping these people get the proper treatment. if you don't know by now, i kind of have the power to inspire people p.i have the power to influence people and i work, right next to jamila at the cast. her as career services reentry manager, myself from employer engagement specialist to community engagement lead. nothing makes me happier than watching somebody that i know from the streets that i used to sit on milk crates and smoke crack with coming over and seeing me and receiving that hope and me being able to guide them from a place of experience and a place of lived experience, knowing na if i can do it and as bad as i was back in the day, i can give them the same hope. i have sat in reentry councilmember here in san francisco, i tabled the entire reentry conference for the employers. i am, forecasting to plan many more job fares this year. and you know the ironly about waking up this morning, i wanted this to bad. i got a call this morning from a fellow addict that wanted me to speak at 7:00 p.m., i never say no to anybody that needs help, and you can ask anybody that has touched myspace. i'm here to provide influence, to rewrite policy to stand and support and do whatever it takes to help any person suffering from homelessness, coming out of incarceration, like i have been the past five years in and out of jail. you want to stop that? let's stop and start treating the trauma inside because nobody just goes to jail. there is not a lot of sober people in jail. if we can solve the hurt that is inside together, we can help eliminate addiction and homelessness. thank you very much, i'm linda. >> thank you, inspirational words, as i look just came home from a sent sense about a year ago, working in recover committee, i'm a new bridge graduate. i know what it takes to reintegrate back into society. as of recently, i kind of took to the streets with a my own, my own way of activism, i guess you would say with the videos that i've been shooting around my neighborhood which is district 6, where i live. and just been trying to make sense of what we're doing out there for people that are coming out of incarceration. and it's, very confusing to me. to see the city in the state that it's in. and the, policies that are being implemented. i'm also trying to not only hold my fellow ex criminals accountable and get them on the right path. i also want to hold smft policy maker accountable in the decisions that they made for the city and some of the people coming out of incarceration of, had several conversations with matt dor doeredsey about his neighborhood. he's my neighbor. i come from a broken home of addiction. and i've seen my parents my uncles my whole family come in and out of incarceration and i've seen what works and what does not work. that's my qualifications right there is a lifetime of living around that's correct. good morning i'm ivan i'm the manager for the latino task force pleasure to be here on behalf of the joanna hernandez. joanna has been a tiredless advocate with over 25 years of experience in the reentry. she is a tireless advocate, if you know joanna, she is always cheerleading the issue of entry, always leading within our space and always rallying people around to make sure that reentry community is supported. for example, she's created programs in our neighborhood, so young queens is a program that serves jung ladies 14 to 24. this was started over 20 years and a program that continues to thrive. joanna, previously served on the sentencing commission so she does experience as a commissioner. she is co-chair of latino reentry and crime presensing committee. this was the one of the first committee that was set to meet the needs of the reentry committee. as you know, when the pandemic hit, folks were being lead out and being lead out to no services, services were being moved virtually but joanna, latino task force under her leadership start today create an advocacy arm to make sure that the reenter tree community had one a voice that was advocating for them and also ensuring that they were on demand service that's people can access. as a leader and manager, she has established reentry programs. as we know, reentry and experience of family members is not just a san francisco problem. san francisco does experience a high level of folks that come to san francisco for the reentry service that's we do have, for the beck service that's exist here. we have folks that travel here for other reasons. and we need to be able to coordinate with our sister xhaountsz in alameda and san mateo and solano these are communities that she helped establish programs as well. joanna is a passion al crusader. she wants to improve in which our justice system responds. so joanna is somebody who definitely sees the reentry committee from a personal perspective in that way. and i think to close, joanna holds and probably does some of the most important work by being a mother of three and a grandmother of 2. for somebody to really root her life and home experience and her professional experience in an effort to interrupt disrupt and eliminate generational incarceration, you know, this is who joanna is. we hope that you're able to programs called the fad program which is a felons against drunk driving, i went to prison for taking two lives. i'm here to bring reality to what drinking the bottle. i survived ten years of domestic violence with my former husband and the struggle and pain that i drink to the table. the reality that we all seem to to the side but we have to look at the facts of life and ptsd and draum is real. i didn't face reality until i went to prison. a prison helped save my life and so many others. what i bring is a voice of truth and honesty, by work withing sunny and steven good to help develop a program called home free which i'm a resident of and i have the backing from them to bring the five keys formality as you see, five keys has done a phenomenal job bringing education, we can also bring phenomenal job in helping people to get off the streets and to stop coming through our systems once and time and time again. the reality is, we need to look at trauma face and dead in the eye and look at the people, ask them that dead question when they're in the back seat of the car. that very question that somebody should have asked me why are you looking at the bottom of the bottle each night. part of that. and what he has created is a friends and family day which reunites people coming from incarceration and drug use with families to be able to bond and come together and bring themselves back into the community. the other thing that he does that he does not, every saturday we go out and pass out boxes to the people that in the community that are hungry. and make sure that they're fed. simpson, ceo of success, and i'm here to advocate for mr. andre. andre has been part of the success in the family for nearly a decade now. and he has helped us to launch so many new initiatives for our reentry population. and largely, they have been in our training programs and our transitional programs that have lead to permanent employment. to afford folks that are making a living wage. that is a true festment him as he said been a credible messenger, and that's one of the new initiative in his launching with the district attorney attorney and with the juvenile department, if it was not noert expertise that there is no way that we would be able to get that program launched and off the ground. and this is part of a national movement that hails from the folks on the east coast in bringing these initiative to san francisco to see some systemic change going on. andre is the first one here every day and the last to leave and has helped to shepherd hundreds of people through training through, transitional employment and into lucrative jobs in the city. he's proved positive that what he does, what we're endeavouring to do is remrikable and sustainable and can help continue the fabric of the city of san francisco. we encourage him. he's qualified for three of the positions and qualified for all 3 and we continue to support him through this process. thank you very much.
