Security in airports, Public Transportation hubs, and high traffic areas like times square. We are going to begin with shirlene tracking the latest. Reporter police raids are happening all across the country in belgium. One raid quote led to the discovery of an explosive device, containing among other things nails. All of this as the country tightens security at the borders and prepares for three at around 8 00 a. M. Brussels airport. Video of the first blast shows smoke filling the room, the scene, confusion. Chaos. Here men, women and children terminal in different directions. There was shattered windows and damages to the front and Police Officers and other everyone is okay and pushing people to the exit. Reporter an hour later another bomb exploded on a rush hour subway train. Video shows terrified passengers escaping the tunnels to safety. People being treated on the sidewalk, the First Responders just as horrified as the victims. I saw many injuries. I saw people dead. I saw everything broken. Terrible. Reporter at least 34 people were killed, dozens of others injured. Among them, three mormon missionaries from utah. Isis has claimed responsibility for the attacks. Say spokeswoman at the Belgian Federal Police confirms the three men in this picture are the suspects. Are dead but say this man is still at large. Now leaders across the world are standing united. These are apaying and savage attacks. Appalling and savage attack. We absolutely stand with the belgian people at this very difficult time. Reporter we should note a third bomb at Brussels Airport did not explode. Police found it and detonated it in a controlled explosion. So amid all the way hospital, we know the scene could have been so much worse liz. Shirlene, thank you. The attacks happened during rush hour at a time when the airport and subways were packed with people. Here are two survivors in their own words. I was dropping off my luggage near the International Departure terminal, and i heard the first explosion. With a lot of dust and the ceiling started to collapse. Other side of the terminal, same smoke, same noise, same people screaming everywhere. And there was a lot of glass around, so i saw a lot of of the glass explosion. And there was a lot of blood on their hands on their face and on their clothes of course. I was on the metro in between the stationses which was one metro behind the one that there was apparently an explosion on. We felt a small blast of wind and heard thudding sounds, which apparently were explosions. The metro immediately stopped. The power turned off, the engine turned off. After the metro stopped, we could hear some thudding in the distance. It wasnt clear to us what it was. It wasnt immediately clear this was an attack. We just kind of felt this little burst of wind and heard thunder in the distance. Everyone stayed pretty calm. There was one person who was jumping over metro seats to get ahead of other people to evacuate. But for the rest passengers were helping others to get down the ladder, helping other passengers to carry their kids strollers and everyone just kind of calmly and quickly walked toward the exit. Here at home a much different story. Officials say there are no imminent or Credible Threats against the United States or new york. Still there is stepped up security across the five boroughs. Much of it focused at transportation hubs and tourist taxes. We saw heavily armed nypd officers patrolling times square. We are in a high state of vigilance and readiness because of the investments we have made in building a strong antiterror capacity in the city our Critical Response command 500 Police Officers at the ready. Allowed us to hold over the tours of duty on all of those units so we are literally doubling the amount of officers available to us on our transit system. As far as the commuters, many are taking the stepped up security in stride. I try not to let it affect me what i go to work. But it is always in the back of my mind. We live in a post 9 11 world. It is always there. And drivers on the way home today will likely face security and checkpoints at bridges and tunnels. Liz . Reporter there was also increased security in major airports in our area. You may not think of as a socalled soft target, but todays attack happened in an area of the airport that has very few security checkpoints. Nj burkett is at kennedy. Reporter outside terminal 4, you know the international we are just coming into the busiest time of the day here at the airport. This is the time when most flights are coming and going and most people are coming and going in and out of the airport. Concern increases here for all of those reasons liz. The port authority, the New York National guard, to their credit moved quickly to secure the terminals here and security has been heightened, no question about body armor with heavy weapons. Most of the security as liz said is deep inside the terminal. And the concern now is to secure the perimeter. Because the belgian bombers were able to carry out their attack by targeting the airports weakest link, where there are no metal detectors and no restrictions on entry. The term newcastle where people gather, often on long lines and as experts point out, they are vulnerable. Those lines out behind where the security is you know, the security is, those are the most vulnerable. It is before any baggage checks, you have people walking in and out with bags. People wearing jackets. It is very hard in that kind of area to know if somebody has something that looks out of place. Reporter and they are securing the airport from the inside out. As far out as the perimeter roadways here. You can see the Curbside Pickup here is largely, i wouldnt say deserted, but is largely empty. That is because the guards are moving people along. No car can stop here for more than a minute or two at a time. I have seen cars get towed. There is a movement in congress to expand secure zones at the airports.
