And Police Believe he placed bombs throughout new jersey and new york over the weekend. Including one that injured 29 people in manhattan. Federal Law Enforcement sources tell cbs news this morning they fouvnd writings from rahami, they reveal how he may have been radicalized by various terrorist ideologies. Rahami was a naturalized american citizen who was born in enforcement officials. Homeland security official jeff pegues is here with more details. Good morning, what authorities are learning from rahami is coming from evidence he allegedly left behind. Multiple sources tell cbs news that theyve discovered a handwritten note and a small notebook. The notebook was found on him. Both pieces of evidence contain written rants suggesting he was the consumer of multiple radical ideologies terrorist organizations. R reporter Surveillance Video shows about madra happily dragging a bag in manhattan. Law enforcement Officials Say rahamis fingerprint was found on one of the bombs. A fourhour man hunt landed in in which. Where rahami fired shots injuring two officers. Pavement and was carted away with blood visible on his right arm. Fact that he survived is excellent from both an investigative value. Reporter and rahamis motive remains a mystery. Investigators dont know if he was directed by a terrorist group or inspired by one. Cbs news has learned that rahami has travelled to afghanistan at least three times, at least as recent as 2014. He visited pakistan on at least one of those trips and was not a restriction list. We have ever reason to believe this was an act of terror. Reporter police want to speak with two men seen removing the Pressure Cooker bomb from rahamis bag and then placing it on the sidewalk. In doing so, they may have inadvertently disabled it. Once they big up the bag. They seem incredulous that they with an explosive called tannerite he used a flip phone to detonate it. Investigation is ongoing as soon as we develop more information we will continue to go but i have no indication that theres a cell operating here. Reporter while rahami lived in new jersey, sources say he was married to a woman in afghanistan zan. Multiple sources tell cbs news that rahami does make a reference to muslims being killed. Thank you, jeff. Were learning more about the two Police Officers wounded in the gun battle with ahmad rahami. You heard in jeffs report both officers will survive. Rahami was hit multiple times before Police Detained him. Michelle miller is in linden, new jersey, at the scene of rahamis arrest. Michelle, good morning. Reporter good morning. Behind me is where that shootout took place. And police have cordoned off street. Theyre looking for clues as to what led rahami to lindin, the town next door to where had lives. Hours after police detonated an explosive early monday morning, Law Enforcement asked the public to be on alert or Ahmad Khan Rahami. Just after 10 00 a. M. , harry baines discovered him sleeping in the doorway of his new jersey bar. I was spending more time wa the guy looks the same. Reporter baines called the police. Officer padilla responded and recognized rahami from the wanted poster. He then told the person show me your hands. At that point, the suspect went to the side, pulled out a handgun and fire ted officer striking him in the abdomen area. Fortunately, he had a bulletproof vest on. Reporter cell phone video followed. Padilla took off running shooting at. And then officers eventually shot and apprehended rahami less than two blocks from where he was fountdz. The rahamis filed a lawsuit against the city and Police Department two years later for discrimination because they were muslims. That lawsuit ended in 2012, when rahamis brother pled guilty to blocking police from enforcing that 10 00 p. M. Ordinance. Charlie. Thank you, michelle. Homeland security adviser to president george w. Bush. Shes now a cbs News Senior National analyst. Good morning. What do we know about motive . What do we know about why he selected chelsea . What do we know about a cell or pakistan . First of all, its not clear hes connected to a cell. Law enforcement is saying theres no evidence of that at this time, but they remind us its early in the investigation. Yesterday, theyre saying why wouldnt isi responsibility we now know these ravnts and where he traveled to, charlie, its equally likely he could have been affiliated with al qaeda, if affiliated with any group. And thats, of course, the focus of the investigation. And investigators are very interested in understanding where is the bomb factory. Had made all of these devices. He would have had to accumulate stuff. The cell phone he acquired over a year ago. Where was he constructing this stuff and why didnt anybody right. What are the options when you have a suspect saying im not talking . Look, hes in custody, so he has a constitutional right not to tell anything. But i will tell you in prior investigations where you bring somebody in in the midst of this sort of an investigation and want to know if there are others out there, and other devices, youre saying to him, look, you dont have to talk to us. But rest assured. If there are others out there with devices and you can help us prevent another terror attac fail to, you will be champed with complicity in those future attacks. Does that carry any weight with somebody that in most cases they dont care if they die . Clearly, this guy did care. He was not interested in dying. Im interested in this more than yearlong trip that he took to pakistan. He also visited afghanistan. Are officials including homeland absolutely. Part of that, norah is going to rely on cooperation with Pakistan Intelligence service, who did he meet with and where did he go. Is this the trip where he was radicalized. Investigators tell us talking to people here when he came back from that trip, he grew a beard. He seemed to be more antiamerican. Those were the clues. Whats interesting with the police work, one thing that points to him and some evidence that turns up the similarity of the bomb . And the c public. Right. Right. For the first time, many of us got that this identification to be on the lookout, turn on your tvs and take a look. Ive never gotten one of those. Many said, i think thats very helpful. There was some debate whether to use that and then given the okay. Go ahead. Im worried about that, once investigators, this is not the time to do it, theyll have to go back and look, this is country of national interest, of concern. Ill tell you, as you look at the u. N. General assembly, the issue about the report, the dhs came out and said is there are others given citizenship to, its a bad time for that report to come out. Thanks, fran. Meanwhile, both trump and Hillary Clinton said isis, the terror group at the center of this anxietyridden debate wants the other nominee elected. I dont know. These are experts. Thats what they do. They protest. Reporter after a weekend of terror attacks donald trump said the country must use profiling techniques. He was at a loss, however to explain the target or methods. Im not using the term muslim. Im saying youre going to have to profile. Reporter in florida, trump said the screening process must consider an applicants world view. You cant have vetting if you dont look at ideology. Reporter the wounded suspect in the latest new york area attacks Ahmad Khan Rahami traveled to afghanistan and apakistan. Rahami is a naturalized u. S. Citizen, with access to legal various Court Systems for years. And in the end, people will forget. And his punishment will not be what it once would have been. What a sad situation. Reporter trump again blamed Hillary Clinton for the rise of isis, speculating the terror group is secretly pulling for her. They want her so badly to be your president , you have no idea. Reporter citing intelligence assessments linking trumps clinton turned the charge against trump. A lot of the rhetoric weve heard from donald trump has been seized on by terrorists, in particular, isis. Reporter trump also said news that more than 800 individuals with deportation orders were mistakenly granted citizenship proves his claim that the Current System must be strengthened. These are people that were supposed to be deported, and they were given full and last night, donald trump jr.
