As i tell you what went down. 11 40 last night,p officer Jesse Hartnett was in uniform driving a marked car when a man started firing a gun into the drivers side window. He was able to get close enough at one point to get in the car with his gun and start shooting at the officer inside the vehicle. The Police Commissioner says at least 13 rounds were fired at the officer before he managed to get shots off at the suspect himself. Other officers managed to catch the guy down the road and commissioner ross not a week into the job says this was an ambush. You look at the video, we have some video we captured, this is one of the scariest things ive seen. This guy tried to execute the Police Officer. The Police Officer had no idea he was coming. Its amazing hes alive. Reporter we managed to get this video of the suspects gun and clothe left on the street. Police say he emptied the gun on the officer. Nbc 10s katy zachry is live at Presbyterian Hospital where the wounded officer is being treated. Reporter tracy, when the officer was shot its about 10 minutes from Presbyterian Hospital. He was rushed here and quickly taken into surgery. The officers family rushed to the hospital as well. Officer heartsnet with the 18th district, his officers and supervisors met here. Commissioner richard ross went inside to see him. He tells us officer heartnet was shot three times in the arm, one arm is broken and he has significant nerve damage. Fortunately hes awake, he was coherent, okay, but hes now up in surgery, hes got a lot of recovery ahead of him.
