One of the causes is this persistent northeast wind that we have been seeing for the last couple of days. That is making the ocean pretty rough. You combined that with the new moon we have at the new moon and at the full moon, we get bigger waves. Theres also that Tropical Storm cristobal. So the combination of all three is going to create these problems. The storm itself does not look very impressive on the sat lied picture. It keeps spinning and spinning and spinning out there. It keeps spinning in the water in the same direction. The swells come up from the southeast. Remember, the wind is coming from the northeast. That is going to be an issue for a good bit of the week. The storm itself is going to be moving out to sea. Were not going to have to worry about it coming up this way. We have more beautiful weather around here. Reporter lifeguards here in ocean city are keeping people close to shore after having to rescue a couple of people earlier today. You can see people not going deeper than their waist. We have beautiful weather here. Thats drawing a lot of people to the beach. The ocean water is warm, in the 70s. This sh still a time of year when many beach patrols have fewer eyes on that water. 6 lifeguards on high alert. Folks in the surf could go no further than waist deep. You are feeling yourself getting thrown around a little bit. The guards are being vigilant, keeping people in front of them. We are keeping them shallower. Reporter for the second straight day, red flags were up along the water in harvey cedars. Lifeguards not letting people go in past their knees. You really got to be careful. Reporter the dangerous conditions fuelled by a combination of onshore winds, a new moon and Tropical Storm cristob cristobal, come at a time when many patrols are stretched after having their ranks shrink. Guards go to college. The southern schools start early. Reporter ocean city has 42 guarded beaches. Now it is down to 32. People need to be smart. This time of year is not time to play around. Two Cape May County employees were aboard this helicopter when it crashed. Sky force 10 was over the scene here. One of the employees was injured. The helicopter was scheduled to do spraying in the area this morning. Investigators will try to figure out what caused the crash landing. The woman charged with sexually assaulting and kidnapping a 5yearold girl is expected to testify at her own trial. Today in opening arguments prosecutors described how they believe she took the child from a Philadelphia School and sexually assaulted the child by herself. She says she is not guilty of any of the crimes. Lu ann cahn was in the courtroom for todays arguments. A lot of new information coming out the case today. Reporter i should tell you, she did not react at all when the assistant d. A. Came and stood in front of her and then told the jury that she inflicted pain no parent could ever imagine for their child. The victims civil attorney was also in the courtroom today. She has the most brutal, horrible assault on her that you could imagine. Reporter he says when his young client eventually testifies during this trial, we will hear more about the life long injuries she suffered. Today, the prosecutor told the jury the 5yearold victim in this case was blindfolded, put under a bed naked and terrified and sexually assaulted with an unknown sharp object. The woman you see dressed in this video is a day care worker who knew the victim and planned the childs kidnapping january 14th last year. Posing as the childs mother, shes lengthedly brought the child into her home in a laundry bag. She told jurors, you will hear about the man, a white man she allegedly showed her victim a picture of in a cell phone saying, this is the man your mommy sold you to. This is the man who is going to do terrible things to you. The assistant d. A. Told the jury the child was led to believe a man sexually assaulted her the way a child is led to believe there is a santa claus. The attorney asked the jury to keep an open mind to look at the size of the woman in the video and compare it to the petite size of his compliant. He raised questions about how it was possible for others in the home not to know there was a child in the house. This is a wonderful, courageous, precious little girl. I have absolutely no doubt that she will rise to the occasion when she is called to testify. Reporter thats expected to be in a couple of days. The civil attorney has filed suit in federal court against the School District and against the woman about the safety, the security that was at that school at the time. The first witness on the stand today admitted she never asked the woman who came in and got the child if she had any i. D. , identification or who she was. The teacher in the childs classroom said he did ask, are you the childs mother . And she said, yes, i am. And then he let them go. A lot of graphic information is being released in this trial. What was the reaction like today in the courtroom . Reporter you know, it was so interesting because they did describe the Sexual Assault on this child. And i was watching the jury for a reaction. I was surprised they were listening very attentively, but they did not act shocked. I believe the judge really prepared them for what they were about to hear. I sat in the back of the court room for a while. There are people who are silently crying, clearly they are friends, family of the victim. Very difficult for them to hear this. Very tough. On january 14, 2013, police say she posed as the childs mother and kidnapped her from her elementary school. The next day a passerby found the child on a playground. About a month later, on valenti valentines day, she was arrested and charged with 15 crimes. In march of 2013, the family of the victim sued the Philadelphia School district for reckless indifference. A month later in april, she was indicted by a grand jury. Jury selection began just last week. During that time, she turned down a plea deal. Nbc 10 learned the now 7yearold victim will testify against her alleged abductor likely this week. Nbc10. Police spotted the car in the middle of the street blocking traffic. Officers said he was drunk and had a beer in his hand. They say his 8yearold nephew was on his lap and his 9yearold nephew was in the back seat. He was supposed to be babysitting the two. He is facing a long list of charges.
