The src convened a meeting saying after 21 months of negotiations with the pft, those negotiations have moved, in their words, the wrong direction. Superintendent dr. William hite says its time for teachers to share in the sacrifices. So here is what happened. A board voted unanimously to cancel the pft contract, and what that means is that teachers will have to put up their own money for benefits. Salaries have not changed, and the src says this action will d redirect 48. 3 million to district schools and save 100 million over the next four hours. The School District is facing a 71 million deficit for the next school year and both the chair and superintendent contend this will help. I asked chairman bill green why this happened now. We treated it as in addition to an action meeting a litigation and generally speaking in litigation you dont announce that youre filing a lawsuit. I regret that we have reached this point. I sincerely hope we have reached a different outcome for the sake of our children, administrators, especially our families across the city. We dont want to go through a year like we did last year. We want to provide and get these resources into schools so that they are able to support our children as quickly as possible. Reporter yeah, this was a pretty tense meeting. Parents and teachers say they werent notified about it. Only a small mention in yesterdays inquirer. We werent notified until this morning. Teachers werent allowed to speak until after the vote was taken. I wanted to speak on that resolution. How am i going to do that when they already passed the resolution. The people in the city do not want this anymore. If they werent sure before, they know it now. Reporter one person yelled out shame after the meeting was adjourned. Only a few dozen people were in attendance. I spoke with an education activist here who is very vocal about this decision. Hospital Officials Say the cdc determined the likelihood of this child having ebola is extremely low, so it will not run tests.
