Senate majority pac is responsible for the content of this advertising. So its been an eventful 72 hours for republican president ial candidate donald trump. It all started friday with the release of this tape where you can hear him talking appropriately about women. This weekend hes been losing support of several republicans. Today speaker of the house paul ryan turned on trump. Were joined live by jim schultz, a gop attorney, to talk a little bit more about what all this means. Jim, how big of a deal is this for trump to lose the support of congressman paul ryan and the other leaders who jumped off the trump train this weekend . Its a really big deal. The reason for that is last night donald trump had a really good debate performance. All that did was serve to galvanize his base that he was trying to not to lose as a result of the release of this tape. It didnt do anything to dig into the independents that he needs to get in order to win this election. And paul ryan is a thought leader in the Republican Party. And hes a leader in the Republican Party. And certainly independents and folks who are likeminded to republicans are going to take a cue from paul ryan going forward. You had local folks like congressman pat meehan doing the same thing. And he doesnt have a race, so its not a selfinterested issue on his part. He doesnt have a close race. He was just tired of the awful and offensive commentary from donald trump and didnt want to be part of it anymore. Jim, headlines were made even before the debate last night. Trump brought in women who accused former president bill clinton of some type of sexual misconduct. Do you think his strategy was successful . It was successful only to the extent that it probably shortened the time frame in which he discussed this topic during the debate. The whole idea that, well, im not as bad as he is or im not as bad as she is because shes been protecting him from all the abusive things hes done to women, im not sure that works long term, all it did was serve to confuse the issues last night during debate and probably shorten the time within which those issues needed to be addressed. Jim, the election is around the corner. What do you think trump needs to do in the next 29 days to win . He needs to pivot. He did a nice job last night staying on message as it pertains to hillarys 30 years in Public Service and the unsuccessful record shes had in Public Service, bringing out the emails, bringing out benghazi, bringing out the fact that, you know, she speaks out of both sides of her mouth. In the speech to goldman sachs, she says, i say one thing privately, one thing publicly, then she compared herself to abe lincoln somehow. He seized that moment. He needs to continue to pound away at Hillary Clinton so that come election day hes able to pick up some of that independent support. Gop attorney and political analyst jim schultz, thank you as always for joining us. Thanks for having me. Stick around for nbc nightly news with lester holt for all the action on the campaign trail and more on todays developments, coming up at 6 30. A National Symbol had a rough a couple of days in jacksonville, florida. First, a bald eagle survived hurricane matthew. Then this happened. The bird somehow got stuck in the grille of a car.
