Theres the video of him arriving in new york city just moments ago before he boarded the helicopter to make his way to manhattan. A couple of hundred were gathered at the airport to welcome him. His first trip to new york city after another first today, his speech to the joint congress. A short ride to Lower Manhattan from jfk. Beautiful weather for the visit and for the ride which we understand hes not a fan of. He would prefer to travel on the ground, but when you talk about making your way in manhattan from jfk airport, thats a long drive to get to midtown manhattan. This is the expedient way. Live pictures of new york here, thats st. Patricks cathedral at about 55th street. You see crowds on the left and right side of the entry way. The doors the entrance to st. Patricks have been restored. Part of a massive restoration which was just completed ahead of the popes arrival. Both the exterior and interior as well. Evening Vespers Service scheduled to get underway in about 45 minutes in manhattan. You can see the crowd there waiting there now for hours outside of the cathedral. But you also notice thats unusual for manhattan to see the street closed. And theyre paving the way for the pope to make his way there at about 6 45 after he makes his way on 5th avenue for a short procession. Then here for Evening Prayer Service at about u 6 45. Pope francis made several stops in washington, d. C. The pope talked to congress, catholics, and visited with a group of homeless. It all started with francis becoming the first pope to address congress. He spoke on a wide range of international issues. He wants the United States to ban the death penalty. Americans not to be afraid of immigrants and welcome them, a call for an end to the arms trade. Pope francis also talked about Climate Change and marriage and families. Relations have been called into question. The very basis of marriage and the family. I can only reiterate the importance and above all the richness and beauty of family life. The pontiff also addressed a small group of catholics in spanish and as he left he kissed a small child in the crowd. Nbc 10s Rosemary Connors is in washington, d. C. And rosemary, you caught up with some local people from our area who watched todays speech there. Thats right. It was really the trip of a lifetime for the catholics from south jersey we caught up with earlier this afternoon. They describe it as a historymaking day that sent them home fulfilled and energized. I think the most Important Message was to be merciful and, you know, have compassion for the poor and for us to take care of each other. Reporter it may have been an address to congress, but the people heard the popes words loud and clear. These catholics from south jersey who traveled by bus left washington reflecting on a message that was both political and spiritual. The golden rule, treat others as you want b to be treated. Reporter on the national mall, the faithful pilgrims were not alone. Environmental activists and protesters for Immigration Reform spanned out taking advantage of the opportunity to be seen in a different light. A light shone on their cause by the holy father. We are here to be our brothers keeper and we can do that through Environmental Protection and protecting the resources we need to share. Reporter do you think the popes message to congress will fall on deaf ears . Will it make a difference . I think it will ratchet up the pressure. I hope they do. If they want peace in our country and peace in our world, its the right way to go. [ gunshots ] the family of a wilmington Man Says Police did not have to open fire. Police shot and killed a man in a wheelchair yesterday and it was caught on video. Were going to show you a portion of the video, but we want to warn you it is graphic. The chief says he stands by his officers tonight. Nbc 10s mitch blocker sat down with the police chief today. Reporter this video shows one view of what happened as Wilmington Police responded to a call for a selfinflingted gunshot wound wednesday. Pulled out his gun. Hes trying to shoot himself. Hes under the tree up there. Reporter sean owens told us he saw what happened before the video started rolling. I think he might have shot himself once or twice. But shot three other shots in the air. Reporter the video picks up after officers arrive. Show me your hands drop the gun reporter what it does show is graphic. We blurred the suspects face and will freeze the video to be sensitive to his family, but youll hear what happens. [ gunshots ] we want answers just like you want answers. Reporter in a Late Afternoon press conference, mayor Dennis Williams said the officers involved are on leave. That was before he was bumped off stage by a grieving mother. I need answers. Reporter police chief Bobby Cummings tried to provide some. There were several other shots that were fired prior to us getting there. Reporter is there any other video of this incident . Not that im aware of. Reporter the man in the wheelchair is jeremy mcdowell. His sister called him bam. The pain hurts more today than it did yesterday. Reporter a memorial is already up, candles burning, as are questions about the deadly use of police force. Why they couldnt tase this man out the wheelchair pl why yall couldnt use rubber bullets to get him out of the wheelchair. Reporter why did you have to use deadly force in this situation . The officers perceived what was a threat and they responded to it. Reporter im mitch blocker, nbc 10 news. This is the second policeinvolved shooting in wilmington this year. Police say they did recover a. 38 caliber weapon. Well, do you have a warrant . Police in new jersey did d. O nod one before they search your car. They overturned a rule put in place six years ago that officer hs to have a warrant. Now Police Officers can search your car without a warrant if they have probable cause. 39 hours until the pope arrives right here in philadelphia. Reporter so much focus on the parkway in all of this. But of course Independence Mall is one of the other big venues. Thats what were over right now. Take a look at what were seeing beneath it. You can see that pair of large jumbotron. Leaders said today the audio visual setup for this entire papal event has been the equivalent of 25 super bowls. As we pan out a little wider, you can see the rows of hundreds of white chairs that are now set up here on the mall for those who will be listening to pope francis at this central spot in american history. Of course, though, its not really just about the venues as we widen our view back out we can address the other issue that millions of people across the region have been thinking about, a primary concern has been getting around on the roads during all of this. Weve been tracking that from the sky. And take a look at these live pictures. This is the vine street expressway right where it connects in the onramps to i95 in both directions. The volume out here is unusually light for a thursday evening. It seems a lot of locals, a lot of people who might typically work in Center City Just avoided the area today. You talked about those closures and the traffic trouble starts tonight if youre planning to drive into center city tonight or any time this weekend. Today we learned of new roads that will be shut down and they will start in a few minute at 7 00. 19th and wood streets near the Philadelphia Free library. Also 21st and winter streets and 21st street and pennsylvania avenue. And tonight at 10 00, several exits along the vine street expressway will close. The 23rd street exit, the ben franklin parkway exit, broad street exit, and 8th street exit will all close. And they will remain closed until monday morning. A parking perimeter also begins at 10 00 tonight. Drivers can no longer park their cars on the street en if they bought placards earlier this week. All cars must be moved into city garages or moved out of the area. For anyone using public transportation, septa closes some of its stations tonight. Suburban station on the Regional Rail line, the 5th and 15th street stops on the market frankford line, city hall on the broad street line, and the 15th street trolley stop. Speaking to roughly 400 parishioners served by catholic charities. Afterwards the pope helped serve lunch to a group of homeless people. The group that feeds the homeless here want to make is you are that mission isnt compromised by the popes visit. Terry ruggles has joined us once again to help us with our coverage of the pope. The pope would not want to hear the homeless are having trouble getting their meals. It is an obstacle because the popes visit is creating transportation problems. Cathedral kitchen in camden, new jersey, which is the largest soup kitchen in camden is gearing up to combat that challenge. Reporter on a normal day the kitchen delivers 1600 meals to the shutins in the city. But security for the popes visit means the delivery trucks cannot be on the street on sunday. So on saturday two meals will have to be delivered to each client. Think about it. Were already doing 1500 meals a day. Now 3200 meals prepared, packaged, prepped. We had made a homemade garlic butter. Reporter but not everybody is working on the double order. The culinary class if the kitchen is learning how to make what theyre calling pope pizzas. Start with your seam at the bottom reporter joans baking class is making pope pretzels. Pizza is apparently the popes favorite food and pretzels are a philadelphia staple. So we thought well have something from italy and something from philadelphia. Reporter the pizzas and pretzels will be served to the hundreds of hungry that come to eat on saturday when the pope will be across the river in philadelphia. Have you ever made a pretzel before . No, sir. No, i havent. Reporter the students may lack experience but theres no lack of enthusiasm or pride. I think he will love it. I think he would enjoy it. We doing our thing here. Camden is no longer americas most dangerous city. Camden is a city where families can come to live and work and do business. Reporter the investment is made possible by the state giving businesses a big tax break for moving here. So far other several Big Companies are moving in. It really should be happening now. The recessions over and camdens got other pieces of the puzzle coming together. This is a good time for this. Generally on the minor side. These high, thin clouds are pretty minor. This is major. This is a big storm down south. But so far its just spinning right around the same spot. And the computer models that were suggesting that some of that rain comes up our way even as early as tomorrow do not appear that theyre going to be right. And the ones that have kept the moisture to the south are looking better. As we were talking about earlier in the week, theres the futurecast. We go friday, 9 00 p. M. Yeah, its getting close to southern delaware. But not quite there. The clouds come in. The east wind is there. But thats about it. Theres the storm. This is the european computer model that has been consistent in keeping the rain south of us. Does it again. It gets close. But the rain stays far enough south so that we have a basically dry weekend. Mostly cloudy, kind of breezy. Right around average for the temperatures. And a little cool for the eagles compared to average. But thats a pretty nice forecast for football. Dry weather and cool.
