Really struggled with his knees almost from the get go. There was one winter im not sure i would know exactly what year it was. It may have been the winter of 85. That darren was here rehabbing his knee. He became part of us. What i mean by us at that time, you would sit and have lunch with the employees in the lunch room and whatnot. The impression i always got was darren was very comfortable in whatever setting he was. I guess i think that the time i spent with him during the last four years, the way in which he approached this challenge was just inspiring and unbelievable. My thoughts as i say remarks, his two primary caregivers were amanda and his mother. They were unbelievable, particularly within this last year. I sort of got when i played with him and then after my career was over, say our career as a baseball player was over. I choose to be open the happy side of that. Remembering the times in the clubhouse, especially in the training room after games that sometimes we would stay until 1 00, 2 00, 3 00 in the morning. I was in charge of bringing him sort of a cold refreshment. But i tell you what, i learned more about the game of baseball and how to play the game of baseball from that man during those times in that training room and also on the field. That was the happy times. There was a lot of good times that you wanted to be around the ballpark and wanted to be around him. He was infectious with the way he treated people and the way he went about his business. He taught me how to be a professional and play the game right. He held me accountable. You cant ask for any more than that. Then after the post i say my post career stuff, he changed my life. He saved my life. I went through a lot in my life, losing a loved one. I owe him for what i have now. My wife now, he reintroduced me to her. Thats the reacquainted to her, because i met her when i was younger. Without him, that wouldnt have happened. And i couldnt be any happier and be in a better place in my life right now and i owe that to him. Thank you. Mark . Can you explain theres been an outpouring from former teammates, players, fans. What do you think it was about dutch that made him touch so many people, that made him such a fan favorite, almost made him bigger than the game . Just the way he played the game, the way he commanded the field. You know . He was such a great leader. I mean, its hard for me to explain it. It was just a tremendous feeling that he gave us all as we got out on the field to compete. You know, we went into that went into that spring training in 1993, you know we werent picked to do anything. The year before, they finished in last place. I came over as a free agent. From day one in spring training, we didnt care what other people thought about us. As we got through the season, these guys cant play. I dont know how theyre doing it. Theres no way theyre going to make it through the whole year. Darren wouldnt let us fail. You know . I mean, there were instances where he got in a couple peoples faces and demanded that things be straightened out. You know . It wasnt an i team. It was a we team. And he didnt stand for anybody worrying about themselves being selfish. I think the one special thing about our team i think tommy will agree is we had three platoons on that team. It was myself and inky in left field. Wes and wright and mickey. We all we have have been listening to former teammates sharing their thoughts there on Darren Daulton. We will monitor their remarks. You can continue to watch that live. Go to the nbc 10 mobile app or nbc10. Com. We are streaming it there for you now. Dutch had a huge impact. The most dangerous year for teenage drivers.
