The fire commissioner told us when the firefighters arrived after 3 30 this twostory home was thoroughly engulfed, completely in flames. He said that relatives were here on the scene telling him that six people at one point were inside and at one point it appeared everyone had gotten out. But then they realized one of the children was missing so the mother went back inside to look for her son and she was found near the doorway of the second floor bedroom, holding her child. We can also tell you that the commissioner tells us that there were about five portable heaters inside this home and he said it is possible that the heaters ignited something flammable surrounding them and that is what caused the blaze. The commissioner also told us that there was no working Smoke Detector inside. So at this point a very sad scene here, relatives have gathered here and lets listen in to more what the commissioner just told us. Adult and a child they were found on the second floor. The mother of the child had the child in her hands. She was desperately trying to get out. She was also out but went back in to get her child. Went back in to get her child. But she couldnt make it because of the heavy fire and smoke condition. Reporter the commissioner also said that every family at this point should work on an escape plan. If everyone is out and you realize someone is missing its dangerous to go back inside and try to find that missing loved one. Now to the other breaking news story. This is a picture of officer Jesse Hartnett were about to show you, he was on duty last night when he was shot. The officer is recovering at pen presbyterian hot. Someone flagged him down in his patrol car and shot him 13 times. Officer heartnet was hit three times. Thank you. Back to our breaking news were following this morning, Philadelphia Police officer flagged down and shot at point blank range inside his cruiser. Katy is at the hospital. First to matt delucia at the police station. Youre looking at how investigators are trying to understand. That is the question. The Police Commissioner says this was an unprovoked attempt to execute one of his officers. And the commissioner says he cannot believe that his officer was able to survive what happened. Heres why. Look at some sproo of that police car that this officer was driving. This happened last night. Jesse was in uniform on 60th street by spruce when a fan started firing a gun. He was able to get close enough that the guy was shooting his gun inside the police car tfrmt officer managed to hit the suspect as well. Enough for him to escape and get the suspect running away. That suspect did not get far. Officers caught the guy down the road. Commissioner ross not even a week into the job this was crazy, ridiculous and ambush. You look at the video we have some video we captured. One of the scariest things. This guy tried to execute the Police Officer. The Police Officer had no idea he was coming. Its amazing he is alive. You can see the suspects gun and clothing he dropped trying to get away. Until investigators talk to this guy and figure out the motive they are looking at every possibility. The scene was cleared a little more than an hour ago. There is video of this. You heard from the commissioner there that they are looking at. Were trying to get access to at least part of that video. Its a scary thing, these officers tell me little more than a year ago two were ambushed sitting in their cruiser. My colleague is live at Presbyterian Hospital. Reporter officer heartnet has been here undergoing srnlgry since soon after the shooting. Officer heartnet was alert. He had been shot at least three times. At the time of surgery he had at least one broken arm, his left arm, and significant nerve damage. We know he is 33, has a girlfriend, and he has been on the force for the last five years. His father rushed here to the hospital and was offered support by police and mayor kenney. We stood in the waiting room with his dad, dad was very upset and just very upset and concerned about his son, calling his family. Its amazing to watch what our officers and their families go through to protect us. Officer heartnetworked in West Philadelphia. In the last minutes i have spoken to some of his fellow officers who you see now are in front of the Emergency Department here at Presbyterian Hospital. The president went over powerful lobby groups like the nra accusing them of using fear tactics to influence lawmakers. The fire commissioner broke this tragic news. Reporter he did. And he was trying to hold back his emotions himself. Its a difficult scene out here. Weve just spoken to family. We learned that mother is in her late 20s, the baby that she was cradling in her arms trying to protect him from the flames and the smoke was 2 years old. She was about 5 or 6 months pregnant. Im going to get out of the way and show you whats going on as we showed you what firefighters saw when they arrived after 3 30 this morning. A twostory structure, heavily engulfed, we spoke to people who tried to rescue members of the family including the children inside. Two adults and four children. The commissioner said when the mother realized her son had not escaped she went back inside. Firefighters found her dead, holding herston near the doorway of the front bedroom on the second floor. A relative was trying to fight the flames. We were told or informed that there were at least five portable heaters used in this home. Thats the number one issue. On monday i tweeted out that if youre going to use space heaters, space heaters need space. The second concern is one of the family members tried to fight this fire themselves. And because they were trying to fight this fire, it delayed everyone getting out. Reporter the commissioner also tells us there were no working Smoke Detectors inside this home. Neighbors detector was sounding off when the firefighters arrived. We have watched in the past half hour as l and i arrived and the fire marshal has continued to sift through the debris, combing through the rubble to confirm the exact cause of this blaze.
