The nbc 10 investigators are taking a look at one of philadelphias oldest and most notorious cold cases. Two authors believe solved the decades old case that centers on a young victim known as the boy in the box. It happened in 1957 but it continues to frustrate police to this day. Nbc 10 investigator mitch blocker shows us how a new tip could finally give a name for americas unknown child. Reporter his grave reads americas unknown child. Unknown but not forgotten. All these toys are basically new from christmas. Dave drysdale is the Second Generation to care for the grave at the cemetery. I remember my father say well take care of him. Were going to take care of him. Reporter the headstone carries as much as is known about the boy underneath him. They found him naked wrapped in a blanket, stuffed inside a babys bassinet box. It was headline news. Pictures of the crime scene made front pages. Police even cleaned and dressed the boy to release his picture. Today sergeant bob colmeyer is the Third Generation to search for the boys killer. To put a name on the child and to solve the case. Its the ultimate in police work. Reporter through the years police have followed so many years. Something about a woman who rented an apartment during that timeframe. Reporter each buried inside the boxes. Has the public ever seen whats inside these boxes. Not to my knowledge. Not to my knowledge. Reporter looked at carnival workers, hungarian, pictures taken in the neighborhood where the boy was discovered showing how much the world has changed and how little the case has. Technology gave new hope. They exhumed the body and took a sample from a remaining tooth. They watched reburial closely paying attention to anyone attending as kuhlmeier dug through the guest book. Theres a gentleman we plan to talk to. Thats all hed say. Another road to go down perhaps another path to disappointment. As we investigated the mystery, we believe there are those who believe the dna will give hope. You think you solved the case. I think i did. It makes the most sense when you look at the facts. Reporter two authors in los angeles and new york say they have traced the boys family to memphis, tennessee. The only way im going to find out if its the child is the dna evidence, scientific evidence. While searching separate books, they paired two tips together. One from a woman claiming a woman bought and killed the boy. Another claim philadelphia man rent add home to a man who sold his son. They took a dna sample from who they believe to be the boys brother. Were not showing you his face or releasing his name because he was not interested in being part of this story. We can show you this picture. The authors believe this the boys unknown farther. We asked philadelphias former assistant medical examiner and Current Deputy examiner to look at pick of the boy, potential brother and father. There some similarities to these pictures. Enough similarity i think is worthy of further investigation through some more specific laboratory decembers. Mcdonald was working in the philadelphia forensic lab in 1998 when the boys remains were brought in and dna extracted. The upper portion of the ear, a little pro trub rant, pushes out. He saw something similar in his potential brother. His right ear points out in a similar way. That is a potential connection, genetic connection. Mcdonald showed us common traits among all three photographs. Some similarities in facial structure, even the nose itself on this young boy, the end of it is a little bit bulbous. You can see a similar feature present on his potential brother as well Philadelphia Police were well aware of the authors theory. Is this a good tip . Its an average tip. The sergeant and his colleagues work 280 homicides in 2013. He said they have to work fresh cases first leaving little time to chase any lead in a case thats 59 year cold. Do you plan to test the dna. Were going to investigate further is what were going to do. Toys and candy left at his grave prove the boy in the box is not forgotten, especially for those who see him every day. I hope one day there will be a name on that stone. Now, Philadelphia Police wont use the dna one of the authors got from the potential memphis family. Police told us they would have to take their own dna sample in order to maintain a chain of custody. The sergeant said before they can do that they would have to make sure the authors theory is worth investigating. Nbc 10 news. Coming up in sports career day for a flyers defenseman.
