Vice president pence was here, defense secretary mattis was here, and i can tell you there has been a lot of concern, particularly among european officials, about the chaos they see that is going on in washington. I sat down with the Iranian Foreign minister. As you know, the president has been talking very tough about iran. He was also standing next to the israeli prime minister, talking tough about iran. And i asked the Iranian Foreign minister how the government of tehran is seeing all of this. The Trump Administration recently announced that it was putting iran on notice. What does that mean to you . I am used to this type of language from the United States, but i dont respond well to this type of language. It would work better if they used the language of respect, the language of mutual interest and that would make iranians respond positively. Reporter the Iranian Foreign minister didnt lash out at President Trump. He tried to be very diplomatic, which is typical of events like this. But he said he does not expect the iran deal to be torn up because it is an international deal. He says that President Trump may be talking against the deal, but he doesnt think that the other signatories, particularly the europeans, are in any mood to restart years of negotiation with iran. Lets review the week in the administration. General flynn resigns, and he pulls people out of the running. You had mattis in brussels, you had trump speaking. Who is shaping the white house Foreign Policy . Right now to the best of our knowledge, it appears to be a combination of jared kushner, the president s soninlaw, steve bannon, the chief strategist and we have no National Security adviser. So in many ways, theyre shaping it. And i think defense secretary jim mattis has a lot of influence. It seems as if, you know, when mattis puts forward some candidates the president is more likely to listen to him. Whats unclear is the worrole secretary of state Rex Tillerson will be playing. It was such a high profile pick, it was such a high profile search, and it does seem of all his National Security team, if anyone is on the outside looking in, it appears to be mr. Tillerson. And some reports that mr. Tillerson is not pleased hes been locked out of some of these meetings with world leaders. Lets put yesterday, chuck, what we saw down there in florida at that airport hangar together with the press conference mr. Trump held in the white house on thursday. I spoke to one white house senior aide who said trump is out there in his natural habitat. Hes reminding people why he became president , hes taking his case directly to the American People. Is this a good format for him . I know he thinks it is, but is it good for a president to be out this way . Thats the open question. I was calling it his political comfort food, right . Youve been traveling for a while and youre sort of tired of eating takeout or whatever, and you just go home and you want the stuff you crave the most, and for him thats jousting with the press in a press conference where hes the center of attention for over an hour and having a Campaign Rally with adoring supporters. So i think after a rough month, he needed a personal morale boost. Hard stuff. The question is, does it do anything to stop the political bleeding thats taking place here in washington . Right now i think he didnt do anything to stop that. And while it may feel better, and he may feel better, i dont think hes made much progress in washington. And he, of course, says there is no political bleeding, thats why he wanted to get out front and talk to the American People through the media. Speaking of which, he obviously attacked the media on thursday and again yesterday in florida at that rally. You have john mccain on your show today in an interview you shot a while ago. Here is a preview of john mccain being pretty aggressive talking about the importance of a free press in contradiction to what President Trump said this week. Lets listen. If you want to preserve democracy as we know it, you have to have a free, and many times, adversarial press. Without it, im afraid that we would lose so much of our individual liberties over time. Thats how dictators get started. Im not saying that President Trump is is trying to be a dictator, im just saying we need to learn the lessons of history. Chuck, i dont want to give away too much of your interview, but i have to say mccain went on with a smile on his face to say, i hate the press. I hate you especially, chuck. But the fact is we need you. Significance of john mccain speaking out. Look, it goes to the larger issue that john mccain has with President Trump is that he fears President Trump essentially wants to shake up the 70year sort of world order that the United States has led when it comes to western alliances, and he is concerned its also why john mccain is the biggest critic when it comes to russia and he has such concern about the russia issue, because russia, the torture keurkeys of world, these authoritarian dictators, youve seen the free press get almost shoved out of the country. Thats where john mccain is coming from. Hes saying donald trump is not there yet, but there is a fine line between press criticism and press delegitimization.
