But they should be a wake up healthy has brought. You know by Dr a high Nish and the expert Nutrition Center. This is Talk Radio 680 w. C.b.s. It's time now for a wake up healthy with Dr Ray Heinecke All right welcome back I'm Dr Ray Hunnish the host of the show wake up healthy the show is about how do we wake up feeling better feeling more energetic healthier more vital had a better mood tons and tons of energy and vitality that's what the show is about so call ask your questions well what kind of questions questions about health and wellness you know vitamins minerals herbs Perhaps you've been recently diagnosed with a particular health challenge or disease he want to know is there something else out there besides the drugs and surgeries that I'm being offered. Or perhaps you heard about the latest greatest nutritional supplement and you want to know so I think to it or is it just hype that's what the show's about 41092266804109226680 or toll free 180-922-6680 now my well my pharmacist I specialize in holistic natural approaches to health you know I might my degrees a doctor pharmacy degree from the University of Maryland as a conventional pharmacy degree when I was sitting on that lecture hall listening to all those professors Lefter about the medications that are being persecuted for various conditions I was thinking is that all is that all that we can expect from conventional medicine as you know small changes small improvements and in risk and time and large room. Inside a small improvement in benefits and large increases in risk and I knew there had to be a better way and that's where I think holistic natural approaches come in the thought process and the philosophy of natural medicine is that most chronic conditions you know not obviously not all chronic conditions but most chronic conditions have an underlying cause and underlying causes because somewhere along the line we violated rules of nature. And you know it's not some sort of airy fairy approach this is just basically violations in how we evolved you know perhaps we're not getting certain nutrients that we need you know for example vitamin d. You know if we were living out in nature living out in the bush if you will we would be exposed to sunlight all day long and we would have much higher levels of vitamin d. Then what we get here in modern society and you might be thinking Well doesn't the body evolve or doesn't the body adapt to this living and the answer is No not in the short period of time that we have been exposed to these types of stimulus is like indoor living sunscreen. Low nutrient intake that we consume you know if we compare how many nutrients or how much of a particular nutrient we get. In our diet another good example b. Vitamin k. As an example if we compared it to a caveman's diet they would be getting much more practically all the vitamins and minerals compared to what we get in our diet so you know I think that for the most part when we're talking about chronic conditions there there's a huge contribution of our diet our exercise our activity levels our stress our sleep factors all those things come into play and they all play a very important role in how we go about improving our health so you know let's go as an example Staten drugs that drugs you know we love to beat up on Staten drugs here on the show because stats are used to lower cholesterol the belief is that cholesterol is the cause of our heart disease according to conventional medicine and of course I'm exaggerating that a bit but it's not too far off you know if you go in and your doctor test your blood your cholesterol is elevated a lot of doctors will look at you and say you look you got to get that down you're you're going to die and when we look at it from the perspective a convention of of natural medicine we say well cholesterol wasn't put in our arteries by nature to cause heart disease there is very very important roles of cholesterol and if we overshoot our market we lower cholesterol too low and the research evidence supports this view then we end up with consequences to our health so then the question becomes a what's the appropriate level of class drawn I would say it all depends there are reasons why cholesterol levels elevate and there are reasons why you know Staten drugs can cause side effects for example they the way that certain drugs work is by inhibiting the production of of cholesterol at the level of the liver why because the liver is responsible for manufacturing the majority of cholesterol in the body doesn't come from our diet. You know it's not cholesterol that we're consuming they cause or blood cholesterol levels to go up it's the liver that's manufacturing cholesterol Why is it manufacturing too much cholesterol well but the most part is too much starch and sugar in the diet and a lot of people may be saying if you're not a listener of the show haven't been listening for many years you might be saying oh that's not what my doctor told me well the truth is when we consume want to start in sugar we manufacture a lot of insulin which is a hormone hormones tell ourselves what to do and when insulins elevated it tells the liver to manufacture more cholesterol and so we end up with high cholesterol levels and beyond that we end up with all kinds of other problems associated with elevated blood sugars and elevated insulin levels. But you know what can you do about it well look at this that and let's beat up on stands a little bit you know I like to beat up on Staten simply because the evidence is not nearly as strong as conventional medicine in the media would have you believe. You know for example you know when they did a big analysis of all of the research. What they discovered was that you know if. You might prevail you might prevent one heart attack out of 100 people who take a staten you know if we look at all the research is about accurate we would combine all that research would say you know some studies show that you had to treat about 300 people to prevent one heart attack some show you that you had to treat 80 people so we average it all together would say about 100 people to prevent one heart attack and when we look at the evidence of people who've never had a heart attack there's almost in fact there is no benefit to longevity people who are prescribed that don't live any longer than somebody who isn't the only time that there's been any evidence that there is an effect on longevity that people who take a stat and live a little bit longer than those who don't is in people who have already had a heart attack and even in those people we're talking about about a 4 day increase in lifespan not significant Well more bad news for Staten statens we know increased risk of liver damage we know it can cause severe fatigue we know it can cause memory loss damage to muscles and tendons it increases the risk of Type 2 diabetes if you've had a hemorrhagic stroke which is a bleeding stroke in the brain that is actually increase your risk of having a 2nd one so they don't recommend you know prescribing status to people who have hemorrhagic stroke because it increases the risk of a 2nd well recent data suggests that if you take a stand it increases your risk of developing cataracts by 27 percent that's according to the journal ophthalmology Journal of the American Medical Association that when people are prescribed statens it can increase the risk of developing cataracts. You know the news just keeps getting worse and worse for satin drugs so the question then becomes who Ok not to Staten them what well you've got to 1st take a look at all of your lab work you don't want to just focus on your l.d.l. Or your total cholesterol Recently I had a young lady who came in the office cholesterol was 300 you know when we we have this little tool in the office where we can assess arterial stiffness and we can actually give your your arteries an age right you just as it just put this this little contraption on your finger it tests what's called pulse wave or the last to be which is an indication of arterial stiffness and arterial stiffness is a better indicator than cholesterol numbers by far of risk of heart disease and if you have heart disease of risk of death from heart disease and you know her age was over 10 years younger than her chronological age and yet her cholesterol numbers were 300 well when you look at the breakdown her h.d.l. Was over 100. You know her l.d.l. Was high but so was her good cholesterol and there's a cancellation effect that occurs there so you know we can't just look at cholesterol numbers in a vacuum go look at it and in the context of the the whole health of the person and to me you know evaluating arterial stiffness is probably a much better tool for evaluating the health of your arteries which will ultimately determine. How healthy our bodies will be and so the question is Well how do you test that well. I'm going to do in a way of an hour on this topic on this topic of arterial stiffness and how we can decrease the age of our arteries. But for the time being you know the big question is Well how do we test it well there are home methods of testing arterial stiffness becoming the office we can I can you give you that arterial age has relook at the arterial stiffness levels but there's a home unit that we have now in the office it's called the bio cuff and the bio cuff is a tool that is used it's a blood pressure cuff Ok it's very easy to implement if you know how to use a blood pressure cough or you have a blood pressure Cup at home it's use the same why put it on your arm it gives you your systolic and diastolic blood pressure but it also assesses arterial stiffness using a technique called Pulse way velocity and so what it's doing is it's looking for you know when you're when your heart beats it sends out a pulse of blood throughout the body and then when that pulse returns to the cuff it tells us how quickly that's occurring and then that determines arterial stiffness the less stiffer the more compliant your arteries the healthier your arteries are and I've had the opportunity to run this test on people young and old and it seems to deliver results that are. There are useful because we can you know we can evaluate the health of somebody you know you can see how healthy somebody is based on lab work based on their health history and you know when we see when we look at that pulse we've lost and we get a a a level we can determine whether or not that person truly has arteries that are at below or above their current Quanah logical age. And so this unit called the bio coffee test both blood pressure and the pulse we've Lassie so we can get an arterial stiffness indication and that to me is far more useful than any lab work that we can get now once we have that that arterial Stephens we can use the labs to determine what need to be contributing to that. Very very important thing to know what is causing the arterial stiffness and there's a lot of factors that can come into play here one of the most important factors is of course blood sugar we know that blood sugar correlates very closely with the arterial stiffness the higher your blood sugar levels are the more stiff your arteries become so it's very important to really correct for that so if you are diabetic or pre-diabetic there are things you can do from a natural perspective to improve that arterial stiffness level most importantly focusing on how sugar damages the cells there are things that are called anti glycation agents that help to remove or break down some of this damage that occurs when your blood sugars are elevated and this applies to people who are pre-diabetic or diabetic there are 2 that are very important to know if you are diabetic or pre-diabetic you should be on one or both of these products 1st is called carno seen carnosine carnosine is an anti click cation agent it is. It basically works to break up these cross links that we get between sugar and protein so when your blood sugar is elevated what happens is your cells begin to sugar begins to bind to the proteins in the cells and that causes the cells to become dysfunctional so carnosine helps to get in there and break up some of that glycation. And so it's basically when you take a carnosine capsule for example it increases the levels in the blood for a shorter period of time it gets to work breaking up some of that glycation in the 2nd supplements called beta alanine beta alanine and this is almost like a sustained release version of carnosine it is the precursor to carnosine so beta Alan has been shown to increase the amount of carnosine that is Main you
