Manipulation of government. From Washington. People like. This is. Something. Original series premieres Sunday night only on epics. Welcome back to coast to coast am I I'm Lisa Gar My guest is Dr Michael Breus he is a clinical psychologist and he is a diplomat of the American Board of sleep medicine he has run leaf labs in multiple sleep studies and he has been a resident on the Dr Oz Show for many many many years in the doctors and so forth and he writes about these wonderful patterns of sleep it's the science of Chronobiology it's kind of a new emergency science and it shows how little micro adjustments in our day can really help us to have better restful nights of sleep but he identifies 4 sleep types which we're going to find out about Hello Dr Ruth how are you I'm always how are you I'm great is this your waltz so you're Ok with late that radio I have all perfect for me love it I love it so it's Tell me a little bit about the science of this emergency emerging science of Chronobiology So it's pretty fascinating actually and we've been able to identify Krone types since really the seventy's now for folks out there who may not know that word Crow type what we're talking about here is if you heard somebody being called an early bird or a night owl those are Crow types originally we discovered about me but early in the seventy's it was discovered that there were some people who had a genetic propensity to go to bed early and wake up early and others that had a propensity to go to bed late and wake up late then in the sort of mid ninety's to the 2000 it was discovered Well that's only a small percentage of the population about 15 percent of the early people about 15 percent of the way then we realized about 50 percent of people were somewhere in-between. So if you do the math on that one it only adds up to about 80 percent or so but they really kind of stop there in terms of identification now there are some groups out there that think they're prototypes but what I did which was a little bit unique was I went and started to study the patterns of insomniacs and I discovered that they had a very distinct crow to pickle pattern and so I was able to identify that and I created a quiz that people can take and learn more about what their prototype is and what's so fascinating about prototypes is that once you understand your Crow type you can learn all kinds of things about your body's propensity to do things like lose weight or go to sleep for when is the best time to exercise things about it sure and it's Ok if you have this specific criteria for staying up late then you know how to how to eat when to wake up and all sorts of things so oh yeah what percentage of the people that you have discovered how large is trying to train is really Jordi of those would be the people in between the early birds and night owls what we used to be called the humming birds but I gave everybody a new name because I'm not a bird I'm a mammal and I decided to look into the animal kingdom and find mammals that actually have these these actual patterns and so the early birds I changed to a lion's right and so I can tell you a little bit about lions lions are generally the c.e.o. Of a company type of thing though the operators they're great managers they are really good at getting people to do different things they're kind of militant in their thinking they like to make a list at the beginning of the day and go from step one step 2 to step 3 just for but they they they get stuff done we call these people type a personalities oftentimes the most popular prototype is the bear and I use the bear because there's in the wild they get up when the sun comes up and they go to sleep when the sun goes down of course Lions their 1st kill is before dawn so they're up very very early and there. Make up the bulk of society they're the extroverts they're the doers these are the people that actually get stuff done and there's a very energetic fun people to the people who are always buying a round of drinks at the bar or inviting somebody out to dinner or something along those lines really good fun interesting people and then the late night people I'd call them wolves and that's what you identified me as a wolf and that is correct mammals and here's what's interesting about wolves is we are night creatures as as the wolves in nature oftentimes are and wolves are my artistic. People these are my actors and my musicians. My entrepreneurs' people of that nature my creative types are wolves but you know wolves historically kind of get a bad rap if you learn of the truth of matter buses and people think we're lazy because we like to sleep in until 8910 o'clock in the morning. We we don't we don't get we have the highest rate of disease highest rate of depression of anxiety which kind of seems to come with that whole creative creativity in that creative personality so it's not always great to be a wolf although I happen to be one we are some of the more creative types out there if we make a list we go from step one to step 12 Step 7. And it makes perfect sense. But you know and then the final 20 percent are what I call the dolphins so I chose dolphins for a particular reason most people don't know this but in the animal world Dolphins sleep it's called uni hemispheric Li which means they only sleep with half of their brain at a time while the other half is awake and looking for predators and I thought that was kind of an interesting representation of somebody with insomnia right there never quite asleep they're never quite awake. And you know these are the these are the patients that I've been treating for 1000 years of the insomniacs and and and the whole theory that I came up with behind this came from a patient actually a cush a patient I saw less than 15 years ago now. And she came in and and she said Dr Bruce you know I've tried everything till I've tried every every technique nothing works for me and I said oh don't worry you know I'm really good at what I do I'm going to figure you out and a month later I still haven't figured her out and she came in and she said it's really getting bad because I'm falling asleep at work and I can't get to my meetings on time I think my boss going to fire me and I said Will let's revisit this whole scenario and and she said you know it's not that I can't fall asleep she turned to me and she said she said I just feel like I sleep at the wrong time. I was very curious and I said Ok you sleep for the wrong time so what does that mean she said you know if I could go to bed at around 12 31 o'clock and I could get up at 9 and go to work at 10 she said I think my life would be perfect but little well why don't we try to do that and she said I don't think it's going to matter soon as I'm pretty sure going to get fired this week I said Well can I call your boss she said Sure call her boss and I said Hey Dr Bruce working with so and so and we have this idea it would be Ok for her to come in late but she'll stay late you know she will leave work at 5 anymore she will surely work at 7 let's say and I and he said you know you do whatever you want to fire and at the end of the week. Wow I'm like No pressure right now. So I called her up and I said hey we got the we got the green light from your boss and see what happens. So the whole week goes by and I called the boss on Friday and I said well you know how did we do this is I don't know what you did he said but she is alert she contributes to meetings her work product is 100 percent better than it was before he said I'm going to put her on a on a shift that works better for her or her schedule she and many and then he said he said you know I've got other employees are like this too well maybe we should figure out a way to you know assess that you know maybe you can help with your workplace productivity and you know we get these people feeling better and sleeping better and so but that was kind of a cool idea so I called up the woman and I talked to tell you know the good news and her husband on the phone and he said thank you he said you gave me my wife back off well that's wonderful so does she still need a full 78 hours in that ideal sleep zone or so that still doesn't change yeah I know well it depends sometimes it can change there are some people who are extreme prototypes but for the most part yeah she she was shifted and she thought she had terrible insomnia and the facts matter was it was her genetics This is a genetic thing this isn't like Michael kind of figured something cool out this is actually in our genetic makeup that you could actually go to 23 and Me Believe it or not and you can get a test for morning this or evening this. I know that to be true but it doesn't always fit into the world schools perfect example this is the rub right. This is the hard part. Bosses say I don't really care if you'd like to sleep in till 9 you need to be if you know up at 6 or whatever and so that's where it gets to be difficult for people to jobs I mean she had a cool boss so she could go to bed before she was going to bed at 9 and having to wake up at 6 am and it was not working for her Right exactly so for us we could get to bed at the hour there our body wants to fall asleep and then wake up when it went away. Up and have a fully productive day oh yeah for sure I mean look we're talking here and it's late here you know on the Civic Coast time and you and I this is like our prime time you know we're just chatty cathy that I don't have a good time right. And so a lot of people might not be able to do that but one of the things that's interesting about Krone biology is its shift of all you have to pay a lot of attention to it you have to be pretty strict with it but I've got people where I use light therapy and little melatonin and were able to shift their body clocks quite nicely as a matter of fact. You kind of have to think of it like jetlag right everybody out there is a shift worker you just might not be had the right shift for you you know that's kind of how I think about it well what about night workers what about those who are awake at night with a lot of truckers and show moderate workers so can they obviously their work hours or overnight like ours are right now for sure and so. The wolves have a tendency to naturally lean towards those jobs so people already kind of know themselves I've known about my my own tendencies since I was a teenager now don't get me wrong most teenagers find that they like to stay up late and sleep late but usually by about 18 they they kind of pull out of it. Way I was I like staying up late and sleeping late well into my late thirty's as a matter of fact I mean I remember when we just started having kids our whole house on Saturday morning would still be asleep but you know 93010 o'clock in the morning . Now by the way you did introduce me to that concept around teenagers and we're starting to see schools starting later now finally I know one day a mommy. Will tell us a little about the statistics around that 1st oh yes it's quite fascinating so it turn. But if at the University of many many out of Minnesota rather in Minneapolis they're the ones who've actually done some of the best research in the world in this area and what they did was they started school times in a particular county almost an hour later for teenagers and they follow the teenagers over the course of the year and what they discovered was almost every single teenager in their 1st period class which would theoretically be the one when they would be the sleepiest with these new school start times they were almost on average a full letter grade above where they were before I mean these are these are c. Kids who are beginning to be even the kids who are getting A's just by changing the timing of the classroom that makes so much sense and it doesn't necessarily apply as a teenager as you said you never even grew out of that yeah actually and I mean it's so that you know when you look at things like prototypes that it's quite fascinating but then when you apply the technology you apply the science to your life it gets really really interesting quickly so the premise of the power of when in part was helped by people identify with their prototypes is the once you kind of fall into your category then the question becomes Ok Michael the kind of cool I'm a lion or a bear or a you know a donkey or whatever what's what's good about it so here's what's fascinating is if you're a lion right and live normally wake up at 6 am all of your hormones kind of kick off when you wake up right but if you'
