This cold front is going to come through the area, not with much rain. A little tonight, not too too much. Its going to stop this run of 70s. Today was the fourth 70degree day. Not tomorrow. Saturday afternoon, maxing out at lower to mid60s for a lot of folks. Sunday morning north of the area starting below freezing. Liberty starting off at 31 degrees. You have a few passing showers that come through tonight. As that front makes its way through the area, some clouds will start off your weekend. Clouds will break up, you will see brighter sky later on saturday. Certainly sunday will be the brighter of the two weekend days but sunday is going to be the chillier of the two weekend days. I just showed you some of you starting off below freezing on sunday. How warm will it get on sunday . Warm might not be the right word. Well talk about that later. [ pause ] reporter lonnie, you probably thought were you going to toss to me in this live shot here and that id be skating on the rink. Saved by the zamboni crews are currently out there now resurfacing the rink in between skating sessions. They are dealing with a lot of water and puddles melting ice out here at times this afternoon this rink looked like a swimming pool. The huge puddles and blue cones out marking them off but people just went on through. We saw people ice skating in shorts, tank tops, you in a name it watching the crews resurface the ice was also interesting. The zamboni was out as crews used brooms to push the water out. One working says this happened once last year too so its not completely unusual. In addition to the ice skating, the holiday shops were out and open also adding to the weather confusion. Its wet. Very wet. My 4yearold just fell. We are going to have to go buy a new outfit. Reporter if you fallen at all in the putles . No, i didnt. 75 degrees in bryant park and skating. You cant ask for anything else. I was telling them that i had to wear open toed shoes in this weather, its too warm. Im seeing people Walking Around in winter coats. You know . Put your shorts on. You cant do this much longer. Reporter have you ever been ice skating in a tank top before . No, no, no. Reporter i mean, can you believe this . Im out here into sleeveless dress. Its november its around 5 00 in the evening. This is unbelievable take a look one more time here at the rink where crews are really trying to push this water out of here. But that hasnt stopped the rink here. A lot of people have been out and about skating. You can see the folks over there waiting to go inside the rink. To a developing story in queens where an elderly woman was hit and killed by a charter bus. Residents in flushing say that there is too much traffic in this area and it is dangerous. Cbs 2s dick brennan reports. Flushing are usually jam packed. Its so congested over here zooming down. Reporter an 84yearold woman was trying to cross in the middle of the block struck by a skyliner bus outside the crosswalk near the intersection of casino boulevard. The driver didnt stop. Other drivers didnt realize a body was in the street. I stopped there, next to it, it looked very dangerous. And then i see that its a person. I couldnt believe that cars were actually trying to go over the body its incredible reporter nypd investigators say the skyliner bus was headed to foxwoods in connecticut. Police later impounded a bus there they believe struck the mayor de blasio says its been a very tough week in new york. Eight new yorkers lost in crashes. And its a reminder of why vision zero is here to begin with. Because the people were losing are grandparents, our parents, our children. Reporter at the scene today, many pedestrians say they are alarmed by what happened. But they admit jaywalking here is common. Look, look how they cross thats no good, either. Reporter maurice, mayor de blasio did make a conscious effort to answer questions that had not been preapproved by his press shop. But whether this was a new policy or just for show is still unclear. Mayor de blasio answered a record 27 socalled off topic questions and believe it or not, even thwarted an attempt by his press secretary karen hinton to end the session after just 17. Im going to waive off karen hinton for a few minutes here, yes, its happening, karen reporter but on the touchy topic of taking ontopic approved subjects, well, the mayor still likes that format why not . He can prepare for it. I think theres going to be times where we just believe that makes more sense. If you are going to have 15 or 20 questions on a very valid, you know, big policy area, we think thats what we should be focused on. Reporter the whole issue about the mayors transparency, the mayor answering off topic questions only about once a week kicked off when press secretary hinton told me a public bill signing was not an appropriate place to ask a question. Russia has stopped all flights to egypt as investigators try to figure out why a russian jet crashed into the sinai peninsulas weekend. Guards searched luggage and passengers at Sharm Elsheikh airport. Security there is under scrutiny since the jet broke apart over egypt last week. All new york city jails are on lockdown tonight after two inmates allegedly tackled and slashed a correction officer. That injured guard was in court today as the suspects appeared before a judge. Cbs 2s tony aiello was there, too. [ sirens ] reporter a police wagon took two teenaged inmates back to rikers after their brief court appearance. The correction officer attacked Raymond Calderon was in the courtroom. You can see the 22 stitches on the left side of his face. This is how he looked after the brutal thursday afternoon attack. Investigators say 19yearold darnell green, who is jailed on a murder charge, put calderon in a head lock, then 18yearold William Whitfield jailed on an attempted murder charge allegedly slashed calderon with a sharp object. The lawyer for whitfield the alleged slasher told the judge his client didnt do it he says whitfield was in another part of the jail at the time of the attack and if being held down, he was in no position to identify whitfield as the slasher. The suspects are believed to be members of the bloods street gang. Rikers and all other city correction facilities were put on lockdown after the attack but word didnt reach many who tried to visit friday afternoon. [ nonenglish language ] says she called 311 and was told rikers was open for visits. 311 did not tell us that you could not visit our loved ones. They didnt tell us at the bus stop we couldnt visit. People had to pay cabs to come here. No work, no school to come here. Reporter the commissioner says the lockdown is in place during the search for the weapon used in the attack on officer calderon and other contraband. Tony aiello, cbs 2 news. One of those accused inmates already faces charges for violence behind bars. Darnell green allegedly threw an unknown liquid at a correction officer in march and also apparently punched another in the face back in august. Who helped two killers escape a maximum security facility in upstate new york will pay nearly 80,000 in restitution. Joyce mitchell appeared in court today in clinton county. She will pay the money for the damage two convicted murderers did by using hacksaw blades and other tools she provided to break out of the Clinton Correctional Facility back in june. I saved her life got choked by apples so he got into that that choke at a cafeteria and i saved her life with the belly and the throat. Reporter this 7th grader performed the heimlich maneuver on his classmate. So thats a good friend. I wasnt sure what was going on. I realized she was checking on an apple. Brandon started doing the heimlich and it came out. Reporter williams jumped into action at Barnes Intermediate School with life saving skills he learned on tv. You watch spongebob every day. Thank god he did. Reporter he saved his buddy patrick in spongebob. He didnt know his son knew this. You have no idea what happens with these autistic kids. Its amazing what comes out of them. Reporter brandon nicknamed his parents marshmallow, big mac. He doesnt want awards or attention but we cant explain how proud we are of him. Im so proud of him really. With him, anything is possible. Good for him well, doctors in london call it a breakthrough treatment. A new experimental therapy appears to have cured a baby with leukemia. 1yearold Leila Richards is home with her sister. Just months after doctors told her parents she had no chance to survive. Leila was given experimental therapy only used in mice. It manipulates the bodys immune cells to target cancer cells. Scientists say its too early to tell whether other patients will respond the same way she did. It worked incredibly well for her. But that doesnt mean they are going to work for the next five or ten children that we treat and we need to do some proper studies. The doctors say the technology that helped her has enormous potential. Well, 7 years of debate over the Keystone Pipeline ended today as president obama rejected the proposal. The president said the pipeline would not serve the countrys best interests and position as a Global Leader in fighting climate change. The pipeline would have shipped more than 800,000 barrels a day of heavy crude oil from fields in canada to u. S. Gulf coast refineries. Supporters had hailed it as a way to create jobs and lower gas prices. This pipeline would neither be a Silver Bullet for the economy as was promised by some nor the express lane to climate disaster proper claimed by others. I mean, you should be having temperatures in the upper 50s for your highest temperatures of the day. Morning low the coldest temperature this ever got down to this day was 66 degrees. Still well above what should be your normal high of 57. Now we are seeing a few little showers now in northwest new jersey. I mean, okay, Sullivan County had a little bit of a shower, as well. This is not too much of anything but this is the cold front thats coming through the area. I want to give you a bigger perspective on the things. I want to show you the cloud cover. The front is that line of rain. The front will make its way through. So tomorrow, we are going to lower the temperatures. Its not going to be in the 70s. Its going to be 60s. Thats still above average but you will have leftover clouds for saturday. By sunday youre into this air mass. You have a lot of sunshine on monday but now you will tap into the cooler air behind this cold front. Now, its not going to be, you know, abnormally cold. But its going to be a little click or two below the average temperatures of temperature. So heres how it looks. For saturday cooler than today about 65 degrees. So youre going to basically 10 degrees depending where you are for your day on saturday. You have some added clouds out there especially for the first half of your day on saturday and then sunday a bright sunny day a crisp one with temperatures only getting up to about 55. Its going to be sort of a big change but 55 is only a couple of degrees off where we should be. Thats what im saying how this is more what were used to this weekend.
