Medics rush the 53yearold man out of the central park north subway station. At least one stab wound to his stomach area. By the time he got to saint lukes hospital, it was too late for doctors to save him. And i am over here saving him. You never know when its going to happen. It could be anyone. Reporter the victim was selling metro card swipes to a woman at the 116th and lennox station. The woman apparently changed her mind but police say the man grabbed a dollar from her anyway. That is when her male companion pulled a knife stabbing the 53 yearold near the turn styles around 9 wednesday night. For whatever reason, the victim got on to a downtown 2 train collapsing after one stop. Its scary. Its been happening a lot. Reporter the mayor said statistics show a drop in some Violent Crimes. A lot of people are wondering if that is an accurate picture of crime. The nypds statistics are quite clear that murders are reporter the mayor said that resources and manpower will be the difference in seeing those numbers drop further. The bottom line here is that were on the right path and in the course of the year, were going to add 2,000 more officers on patrol. I am convinced were moving in the right direction. Reporter now, as for last nights stabbing, police say that the woman who was initially buying that metro card swipe from the victim was detained. The boys grandfather, 54year old Kenneth Miley told police he put the gun under the bed after allegedly finding it and was planning on taking it to a precinct. The police recovered two live rounds of ammunition underneath that same bed. Right now, its still unclear why the child brought the gun to school in the first place. I am a parent. I check my daughters backpack every single day. What does a parent have to say about that . Reporter the department of education spokesperson tells us this is incredibly disturbing and nothing is more important than the safety of all students and staff. School staff immediately notified nypd and they swiftly notified and none of the parents we spoke with had any clue. The school didnt tell you . No, nobody said anything. The grandfather is charged with criminal possession of a weapon, endangering the welfare of a child and wreckless endangerment and faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted the. And we new information on a stabbing in Crown Heights last month. The suspect, 26yearold kenny roshelin wont be charged with a hate crime. It was considered a possible bias incident because the victim was a Hasidic Jewish man who was treated for a collapsed lung. Hes accused of attacking two men in Prospect Park and is facing a series of charges, including attempted murder. And happening today, the michigan Governor Rick Snyder heads to capitol hill and will testify about his role in the lead contamination water crisis in flint. Voluntary blood testing begins for Newark Public School students to check for lead poisoning. The students attending 30 schools where elevated levels of lead were found in the Drinking Water. The water to the schools is shut off. Minutes later, she threw food on the Health Kitchen sidewalk and got aggressive with us when we approached her. All because cruz with the citys peddlers task force showed up and took most of her belongings. We watched her hauling her massive collection of bags and cardboard across the neighborhood, something nearby businesses cant ignore. She, within the course of two or three days, regained two or three carts and she is probably the hardest working homeless woman in new york city. Reporter for years, there to the city about this homeless womans street hoarding. One week ago, we told you about the city confiscating 20 of her carts. Gonzalez has been sprawling them across sidewalks and dragging them across busy intersections. Do you think this is even work something. Its not solving her own personal issues or problems. Reporter the coalition for the homeless said the city is in a tough spot. Were needing to balance the needs of this individual woman against any other Public Health and safety concerns. Reporter the Mayors Office said its consistently tried giving her housing obligations and Mental Health assistance since 2009 and she refuses. For now, she can only make sure shes not breaking the law and telling us shes only allowed single cart. How do you help someone like this and get them off of the streets and get them help if theyre refuse something. Engagement, trust building and housing first. A lot of times the trust streets takes time. Reporter we asked the do and got this statement were consistently sending experienced outreach workers to talk to sonia and build the trust needed to help bring her indoors to the shelter and services she deserves.
