This is Dallas away news and issues for the 1st state here's Alamo down Oh good morning again thanks for joining us 2nd hour here Delaware w.c.l. In contrast to yesterday a bright beautiful day and as we were noting will be of the Seton parish carnival tonight Booker r.w.d. E.-l. Tam's. Well let's give you some of the latest reaction to President Trump's declaration of victory in that tariff standoff with Mexico note my choice of the word declaration of victory because some say it is not quite as has been portrayed by the president let's go live to Washington Ruby Mellon research or today's world view late in Washington Post Washing Post dot com So Ruby What are the assessments of the president did get more concessions from Mexico that there will be meaningful enforcement along that Mexican Guatemalan border or that was already agreed to are there are too many limitations physically for the Mexicans or what. Yeah well the president is definitely touting this as a victory you know he threatened Mexico with the 5 percent carrots the cross the board and that he'd come back with the concession that you know Mexico is going to be tough on immigration now it's kind of up in the air about whether these were confession but we're already negotiated you know report kind of intimidated that Mexico has agreed to send the National Guard to Guatemala to patrol they've already agreed to accept asylum seekers who are seeking asylum in the United States queue you know and wait for their cases in Mexico that was already kind of agreed and hashed out. But it's the president you know kind of saying that this is a victory and that Mexico had actually agreed to more he said yesterday that there were parts of the deal that you know stipulation that would require Mexico to adhere to being more forceful in terms of border patrol that we're yet not so we're also waiting to see about that you know we'll see whether that's of law for now the Mexican Guard does the guard necessarily have this kind of experience to police a border and of course the Mexican border is quite treacherous at points. Yeah I mean that remains to be determined definitely the National Guard what and actually created to be a Border Patrol for if it was created recently I should say you know within the law to kind of. Fill in the gaps of Mexico you know police force in Mexico a country that's been dealing with crime for a very long time and so the National Guard was kind of a popular proposition. They never really expected that it would go to the you know Guatemalan border patrol I should say the Guatemalan border a very porous border there. Yes mountain than River and. You know it remains unclear how 6000 troops which is you know a very. Very notable number how do you you know new trained troops are going to be able to kind of patrol the border and still it's not a short border even though as you say that is a significant number when we get to we come into an election year obviously immigration is one of the top one or 2 planks for President Trump if there are indications that not a whole lot has stopped with the emigrant flow along the u.s. Mexican border then lot well everything kind of to be seen obviously immigration is . A topic that President Trump campaigned on a lot and that his supporters seem to really care about if it's kind of unclear if you can you. Can question the deal are going to be affected. And on the campaign trail if that's the case if. President Trump and likely going to blame Mexico for that so you know if he if he can successfully but the blame Q Q Mexico maybe has supporters well kind of you know feed into that narrative Well if you talk here you know migrant experts or economists they would tell you that you know this isn't the way to solve the migration problem the way to do it is to kind of help alleviate the situation in the country but the people are leaving and that and that income has actually done the opposite of that you've got a mile and hunger. And obviously if you jeopardize the Mexican economy you actually create a greater incentive for some Mexicans to try to go north of the border so it's yeah you know why it's kind of damned if you do damned if you don't I'm wondering Yeah Mexico's leftist progressive presidents accords so he has to account for Trump's rhetoric of having. Succumbs to Yankee How's he going to do that. Yeah I mean I you know the president of our He's a very very very politically powerful and very popular in Mexico at the moment anything about whether or not he'll Well you know make some of the porter think that he you kind of bowing to the president or whether they think that that kind of a confession in order to you know get the president kind of going on on the side of Mexico again the carrot would have been really economically productive and if the if were actually if you mentioned that we're already agreed Q Maybe it's Ok to have been some kind of. You know new agreement. Put I mean just to give people kind of an illustration of the overall orientation of the new Mexican president for example he along with the Cubans back to the material government of Venezuela like most Latin American countries so I think that's just one illustration where he tries to part company with the United States and well thank you so much Ruby appreciate the time yeah thank you for having me all the best Ruby met one covering the World reporter researcher today is World View Washing Post Washing Post dot com live here in w. Do you know a 10 town. All right Delaware can a lot of good morning well regular listeners know that we've spent a lot of time talking about what seems to be a very promising developments in the food industry veggie burgers that really really taste like meat you can barely tell the difference if you can especially if you put the condiments on the lettuce and tomato and onion and we've seen the spectacular rollouts of the on meat and impossible foods certainly talented as an alternative to meet the cholesterol though looks like just about the same amount of calories but what about the potential downsides After all you would be substituting highly processed ingredients here we go again anyone looking at diets and different afflictions including diabetes you know highly processed foods are highly discouraged aren't they and you certainly have highly processed ingredients created in the lab for just plain meat Emilie Atkins staff writer of The New Republic thanks for joining us and so you give us another side of the veggie burger do tell are some ingredients we haven't heard of before. Hey Yeah well they're 20. Or 21 ingredient or beyond considering you know which one it is which is way different than a regular programming generally like 100 in yeah he thought you know what I mean but before you go on How about a veggie burger like of being veggie burger that doesn't try to pretend to have the taste of meat is it somewhere in between sure I mean it's good to pan good kind of veggie burger you get your burger like you know. There are some brands that have been great and they're just about simple if you look at the ingredient list you can pretty much recognize everything that there will be like the idea and corn carrot thing like when you look. Around and. You don't actually recognize a lot of. Food like your grandma would. But we get into real trouble of a grandma look at all the ingredients on today's processed foods so there are one or 2 things in there that were even not approved by the feds until recently. Yes Impossible burger hope so hemoglobin in it and if a private kinetic form of you. And it basically mimic it mimic the flavor of meat right you know it's what impossible and burger and order to make like look like they're bleeding and give them back here and then meaty flavor it don't actually. And it's actually in all. Naturally pretty thin on the meat but they artificially create it in order to put it and. I love it Ok. So I mean bottom line I'm going to move 2 or 3 chess moves ahead are you saying then that there are some artificial or lack created ingredients the effects of which the human body we might not know for a number of years or decades in particular somebody for example had a veggie burger several times a week the impossible burger. Sure I think mostly what I'm what I'm trying to put out just by raising the concern that you know there's been so much talk about the potential that the birth can have liked to improve our health. And I don't count like I don't discount that potential at all but I do think that there's a tendency to think that you know the whole process the good thing is some hippie dippie you know you know you want to avoid that but who cares but actually a lot of I don't think that. That overly profits and the amount that we have them in our diet really contribute much. If you did all these other sort of thing to the people of a not working to prevent when we thought be so. That we try and I think that if we're considering whether maybe you like to eat the apple way out you don't think yeah I don't hear what you're saying how are we on salt and sugar and someone please that's the burgers that taste like meat. Sure you're not really getting too much but the 30 and I mean you're still getting the nutritional value of the burger is almost the equivalent I mean an impossible burger and if younger that we have less calories that have no cholesterol like a regular burger had class or all these down there with them around a protein a little bit less fat a little bit less carbohydrate. And calorie and the like but basically I mean the nutritional value is pretty similar However you know what I argue in my article about this that we focus way too much on that you know like individual nutritional component not just like whether it's the healthy food which is what the majority of food how to be healthy food good food we're better off why you know how you people wonder why they're so much healthier than Americans when they eat so much like me and cheese and. Pot than wine and generally because they're avoiding the overly profit take the food that we can pick the percent of the American diet average American diet made a profit and that's generally Why let me offer of a vegetarian counter argument to some of this and that is rather have a processed veggie burger that as you say doesn't have clear restoral and fewer calories still a significant number rather have that if you must have that meat taste but at least you're not worrying about hormones and antibiotics in the beef so although you say you know pure meat is one thing meat we forget about the other things of the hormones and they have a biotics. I'm really I mean I definitely don't discount the vegetarian argument for it at all there are also other types that need alternative that are less profit but you know I mean I honestly think it's probably a good alternative what I worry about it people thinking that you know this is just the fit and that we can replace all of our meat consumption with products like I think that like a large scale replacement would probably create some problems that we are thinking about right now because the because. Again I don't know if a lot of you know I understand you're offering here just a kind of a nuanced argument find a way to do you know it may not may and we've discussed this kind of before but what about then are going over the pros and cons of veggie patties that taste like meat versus plain old or honest to God mate but in between now what some detractors would call the Franken mates that manufactured in the laboratory brave new world where would you put that on this scale. I mean the American right. Like I don't want to stop eating meat or cut down on my knees in. Like trying to help the environment or my how. So I'm going to create a belief in the bank and what the company. Heard you know you call it neat but they they not only didn't want to create a meat alternative they want to make their product the meat so we don't even think that we're not eating meat anymore but. You know we have a hard time keeping things up or making it back or pay for our health or for or for the planet and I mean part of my whole shtick about climate change is that we're going to we're going to be all that and we probably are going to need to make. One of the big problems ever and we have to make a lot of course as you know the beef producers are going to certainly fight tooth and nail the artificially engine or mates for sure but let me just ask you this put you on the spot what do you think now is going to have the greater growth potential veggie mates that are not mates or artificially lab produce meats. That. I think. I feel like the veggie meat probably have more potential but you know I mean like I don't think that artificially created meat in a lab it's almost too. Easy for people to make but but you know you know like you you actually made an animal in that in a lab yeah no animal obame the old Frankenstein Frank it and made depiction which could catch on and be a big negative that the marketing people would have to fight tooth and nail well leave it there and talk some more always here coming up a fascinating articles and your magazine appreciate the time thank you so much yet they try me on All right Emily I can staff writer New Republic here on Delaware. Thanks for listening to Delaware Here's Allen No doubt an example of the swamp all transportation secretary Elaine Chao who happens to be the wife of set of Majority Leader Mitch McConnell reportedly created I was so special pass out for Senator McConnell's favorite projects in Kentucky where McConnell faces re-election Ok live to Washington Tucker Dorothy Day to reporter what eco dot com Thanks for joining us what about that how was this constructed what has Senator McConnell said or not sad or her the pushback from many parties. Sure So basically what we've found is there is this one campaign aide for Mitch McConnell named Todd Inman now caught in men grew up in Kentucky and is from a town called Owensboro and when McConnell ran for election in $22014.00 in Maine was McConnell advance man so when Mitch McConnell would go to campaign somewhere in that would set it up he would meet with local officials so he's connected in Kentucky politics now when Mitch McConnell's wife Elaine Chao was appointed transportation secretary at the beginning of that company Mr h. And she hired Todd Inman as an. The director of operations and we obtained e-mails from the 1st few months of her tenure showing in men e-mailing McConnell's office and saying hey keep applying keep sending grant to the normal channels but also if you want to monitor things if you want to follow up basically giving a little special attention to projects that Mitch McConnell is passing to Elaine Chao office to use him as an intermediary so he was in a sense of special assistant for a project that McConnell wanted to see done in Kentucky and we traced at least 2 examples where Inman was setting up meetings meeting with local officials giving them advice about things that could make their application stronger and when we talk to local official in Owensboro a
