Homeland security is working with foreign governments to tighten security at airports with direct flights to the united states. This, of course, comes in the wake of the russian plane crash over egypt killing all 224 on board. With tens of thousands of russians now stranded in egypt as well, we have nbcs chief correspondent bill neely joining us from Sharm El Sheikh. Bill, good morning. Reporter good morning, erica. The latest count is 93 russian planes on stand by to fly here and bring home 50,000 russian tourists. Extraordinary. There are also 20,000 british it is looking like a mass exodus from here after an event that is looking more and more like mass murder. The flight recorders revealing a violent and sudden event. Investigators cannot find anything mechanical to match it. A childs book amid the wreckage of the crash french investigators are now convinced was not caused by a technical failure failure. Sources told french media on the cockpit voice recorder, the sound of an explosion could be heard, before that, the cockpit was absolutely normal with no technical failure reported on the second black box until the moment of the explosion. This doesnt solve what caused it. It could have been an explosive device that was put on the aircraft or it could have been the sound of the aircraft going through what we call an explosive decompression. Reporter but u. S. Officials intercepts reveal isis fighters in sinai promising Something Big before the crash, then bragging just after it, to their leaders in syria, that they had taken down the plane. The growing suspicion it might be a bomb convinced russia to stop all flights to egypt. 50,000 russian tourists now in Sharm El Sheikh where the plane took off. It was the intelligence chief who recommended russian planes stop flying here. Intelligence shared with the u. S. And britain. Almost unprecedented. We still dont know what the intelligence is. British officials now believe a bomb may have been put in the cargo hold inside or on top of luggage. Airport workers and equipment thoroughly searched while we filmed, but suspicion is falling Egyptian Security officials are searching an airport under scrutiny in a region where isis is known to operate. Tourists, victims and tourists trapped here. Tens of thousands of them now waiting to be evacuated home. And in a few hours time, a major statement from egypt which is leading the investigation. No one is yet ruling out mechanical failure. I dont believe egypt will. More and more evidence, erica, is pointing to terrorism. Bill neely, thank you. To politics. Republican frontrunner ben carson under fire questioned about his account of a scholarship offer to west point years ago. This morning, some republican rivals are piling on. Senior White House CorrespondentChris Jansing is here. Ben carson is feeling the pressure on being on top of the polls. Voters like his honesty. That is now under attack. He fought back in a press conference. Ben carson as we have not seen him before. They understand this is a witch hunt. Reporter combative and claiming voters are on his side against the media. You will not find somebody who will sit back and let you be completely unfair without know. Reporter carson is denying the reports of the fabrication. I offered a full scholarship at west point. Reporter west point never accepted carson. He now acknowledges it was not anything formal. Several of the high brass told me i would be somebody they would be interested in in the military. I interpreted it as an offer. Reporter this is not the first time carson has been accused of embellishing and it is all a new level of scrutiny as carson shares frontrunner status with donald trump who did not waste time. Wow, he wrote, one of many lies by ben carson. Big story. Chris christie weighed in too. Dr. Carson will have to answer for it. He will have to answer for the voters. They have to decide. Reporter how the campaign suggests the competition is spreading lies. Suddenly we are number one. Someone is passing dirt all over town. Reporter and past controversies have strengthened his support among the conservative base. He is continually cast himself as an outsider who is persecuted by the political and media elite. This may feed into that narrative. Reporter strategists say there is risk in going after the most popular candidate in the race. Jeb bush has come to his defense calling ben carsons story inspirational. If it is between carson and media story, im going with ben carson. Chris, thank you. A new book is making a lot of waves on the campaign trail. There is some talk of whether it could turn into another headache for candidate jeb bush. It is called destiny in power. The american odyssey of george h. W. Bush. It is authored by jon meacham. Thank you for joining us. Thank you. I want to talk about what chris just laid out for us with ben carson. What is the impact of this particular issue on his campaign . Most of us judge on historical historical. 2016 has alluded all analogy with trump and carson so far ahead. The past may not be much of a guide here. I suspect it is a bump in the road for carson. As mentioned a second ago. It is an Unconventional Campaign in an unconventional year. The conventional rules of how campaigns can go off track sometimes probably dont apply. It is something we will be following closely. Talking about your book, it made headlines this week as we learned more about george h. W. Bushs view of his sons insiders when he was in the white house. Elder bush saying cheney had his empire and rumsfeld had a lack of humility. Jeb bush, the third bush in the equation. We asked him and he said his dad was trying to create a different narrative for his brother. Is that your take . I think president bush 41 was speaking to history. He thought that at times, the style of the 43 Bush Administration was hawkish in a way that probably did not represent the substance of that administration. This is a work of history. It was the long view on 41s part. I think the key thing about this is the president 41 was making a point that diplomacy and force are not competitive. They should be complementary. That was the view in the second term that bush 43 came to as well. We bring bush into the equation, there is some concern about the timing of the book by those in his circle and whether or not it could have a negative impact on his campaign. I think most people agree 2016 is not a conventional campaign year. Is this the thing you think could impact jeb bushs campaign . I honestly dont. I have been surprised by that line of analysis. It seems to me that the story of his father, remarkable american odyssey, youngest pilot in the navy. Young man who joined the navy on his 18th birthday. Shot down over the pacific at age 20. Served his country for a half century. You know, the story of his father, who is arguably the most inspirational and important man in jeb bushs life, seems to me more people who know about bush 41 might take a look at his son with another clearer set of eyes. If anything, it seems to me, that the conversation about the bush family is neutral on 16 and arguably possibly positive because it does remind people of the familys remarkable legacy of public service. I have to admit, i just got it last night. 900 pages. Youre not done yet . Shocking. I know you had unrestricted access to the former president s diaries. Looking forward to the read. Jon, thank you. Thanks, erica. The book is destiny in power. And one of the men who hopes to be the next president is taking center stage. Republican candidate donald trump hosting saturday night live.
