WIS WIS News 10 Nightcast February 17, 2016

Hours of discussion in front of a big crowd of mainly students. But, yes, they did talk about Governor Haley too. Haley, by the way, said in her News Conference today she may not endorse anyone at all this time around. However, the journalists believe a possible endorsement from her would be a big leg up for whichever candidate scores it. Heres what some of them had to say. She would bring a lot of energy to the ticket. People may not vote for the president , like you guys were saying, because of her, but she could juice up a ticket and really bring energy. It is striking that the election may come and go without an endorsement from the moment, but one reason may be that she is someone who is on the short list for any of the republican candidates, particularly if Hillary Clinton is the nominee, and they are looking to kind of counter that appeal among women. I dont know if the governor will endorse. I do know that her endorsement would go a long way here in South Carolina right now. She is popular not just here, but shes very popular nationally, but i dont know if shell ensorse, because youve got to wonder if she was going to endorse, she probably would have done it by now. Shes an effective politician, and her audience around the removal of the flag in response to the horrible events in charleston, i think was an extremely impressive and effective introduction, so based on what we have seen so far, i think that many republicans would look at her as an asset on thehe national ticket. I mean, there are obviously other if marco rubio isnt the nominee, hes someone whos going to get a lot of dicussion. But if Hillary Clinton is the choice, i think you can guarantee there will be serious conversation, at least, about your governor. The journalists also talked about donald trump and that he has a chance to win the nomination, especially after surviving a series of gaffes from last fall up until recently. One of the journalists said he feels the media is somewhat complicit in trumps success because of how much coverage his campaign is given. On the campaign trail one president ial candidate says the death of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia makes his campaign an urgent one. Texas senator ted cruz spoke exclusively with wisnews 10 today. He says rights like religious freedom and Second Amendment rights could be in danger depending upon who takes scalias place on the sot ted cruz 00 15 42 this vacancy, i knew Justice Scalia for 20 years. He was a lion of the law. The court hangs in the balance. And i think Justice Scalias death really underscores the steaks out of this election. The people of South Carolina are asking who can i trust to make Supreme Court nominees . Republicans have so many times gotten it wrong. And they get it wrong because theyre not willing to spend of the political capital, to nominate and confirm approve and conservative. I have spent my entire adult life fighting to defend the constitution and the bill of rights. And part of the reason conservatives are uniting behind my campaign is because they know , they know , that every nominee on the court that i will appoint will be a principled constitutionalist justice. Who will protect our rights. Earlier today, cruz unveiled his plan to increase americas military forces after what he called neglect by the obama administration. Ohio Governor John Kasich returned to the midlands todayafter he took a break to Campaign Kasich held a town hall meeting in cayce tonight. A new cnn poll out todayshows kasich could be in trouble in the palmetto state. Hes currently in sixth place with only 4 percent of the vote. At tonights town hall, kasich pledged to keep his campaign positive. We all plug together. And im not going to disappear. Im not going to go in some bubble somewhere and not be available for people. Because i intend to travel the states to tell each of the states how the other states are doing well to solve problems, and fix things, and raise all of us up. The cnn poll shows donald trump ahead by 16 points. Cruz comes in second and rubio in third. Jeb bush and ben carson are the other two candidates polling ahead of kasich. For democratic candidate Bernie Sandersa strong showing in the palmetto state could come down to two key groups. Young voters and African Americans. And sanders was working to get his message out in columbia todaymaking stops at Allen University and usc. At a town hall event this joined by erica garner, the daughter of an African American man from new york who died while in police custody. Sanders used garners story to talk about Police Brutality affecting the black community and the need for criminal justice reform. We have got to achieve the day when young black males and women can walk the streets without worrying about being harassed by a police officer. Think of him as a protestor,as part of the black lives Matter Movement and also the Civil Rights Movement and hes not try to buy our vote, hes telling you to keep an open mind. Also at the town hall todaysanders touched on topics of gun violence, Climate Change and providing Free College Tuition at public universities.
