Counting ballots today. And we begin with political reporter theo keith who is in milwaukee. Theo, there were some delays with the recount this morning . The recount got off to a very slow start here. In fact the first ballots from the city of milwaukee werent counted for more than three hours. For the suburbs, it took even longer. Stein supporter objected to the election commissioners decision to only publicly test two of the Voting Machines being used in the recount. Commissioners came back and decided to test them all. One of them was broken and had to be fixed. But the objector, Mark Kowalski of greenfield, says it was theres nothing like a 100 percent quality check. If youre in a factory and theres a problem, sometimes you have to check everything 13 it was 2 30 5 and a half hours before the first suburban Milwaukee County votes hit the machines. Also commissioners have rejected about a halfdozen ballots that had been accepted on election day. The county clerk expects he will be able to meet the december 12th deadline. He says workers may be here past the expected 5 pm stopping time for today, at the very least. Now some counties like ozaukee and washington have opted to handcount the ballots. One clerk we spoke with argued it is actually faster than feeding them through a machine. Our Angelica Sanchez is live in thats right stephanie the Washington County clerk tells me the board of canvassers approved the handrecount and have split the count in two separate rooms so they could go through counting a municipality at a faster rate. She says in the past they only used one machine for recounting which she believes would have significantly slowed this process down. She says she could have requested more machine memory cards would have taken away time thats not on their side. If we were using one machine which we have done in the past, it would have taken over 130 hours to feed them all through and as you can see i have two rooms of tabulators we can go through a whole municipality a whole reporting unit with all the tabulators much quicker than going through the machine. the process continues inside these doors of the courthouse five hear what election observers are saying about the hand recount in ozaukee county. Reporting live outside the Washington County courthouse. Im Angelica Sanchez fox6 news steph thanks angelica. How the recount is being handled varies by county. Milwaukee, waukesha, racine, and sheboygan are all machine counting votes. Fond dua jefferson, and kenosha counties are counting by hand. And in walworth county, theyre using machines and hand counting votes. The election recount must be complete in less than two weeks.
