The neighborhood giant has reopened here at the van ness metro station in northwest washington. For much of the day it was closed because workers and customers received quite a jolt as cinder blocks rained down in the dairy section inside the giant after a car in the underground parking garage obviously lost control and went through the store wall. Two people in the car were taken to the hospital with what we were told by fire officials were nonlife threatening injuries. Customers came to the front of the store, met by a sign saying that the place was closed. Some giant regulars told us theres a turn in the underground garage thats a tricky one. When you make the turn to come up we have to slow down. Almost have to wait for one of the cars. If they didnt wait thats probably why they crashed. Dcra inspectors came here to check the structural soundness of this building. Obviously, it passed and the store reopened this afternoon. Reporting live from northwest washington, sam ford, abc 7 news. Thanks, sam. Lets see whats happening on the roads in the area. Bob emler is in the wtop traffic center. How does it look to you . Well right now weve got a lot of volume on the beltway in Montgomery County on the inner loop leon thats because of a crash. The crash is on the inner loop before university boulevard along the right side of the roadway and delays are really starting in old georgetown road getting past this incident. Otherwise, its just volume headed around through college park and green belt. I95, b. W. Parkway. Ill tell you what a lot of folks are getting away for a long weekend on 95 south in virginia and its a slow ride from newington through woodbridge and off and on as you head down towards stafford from quantico and towards fredricksburg, lanes are open. Thats the good part. Out to the west, lot of volume on 66 into the sun, things are generally ok as you travel around the beltway right now. Traffic northbound 395 over the 14th straight bridge not moving at all. Actually pretty light volume. Not bad on the beltway as you travel past river road. Youll find a lot of volume up from tysons. Im bob emler for 103. 5 wtop radio. Thanks, bob. Here we go headed into this weekend that weve been talking about for several days now, its going to be brutal. Probably the strongest cold front of the season the coldest air of the season. The most uncomfortable air of the season is going to start moving in about 24 hours from now. Lets tell you what you need to know here. Right now, its gorgeous out. Chilly, mid to upper 20s. Live look from the rooftop camera in rosslyn and its gorgeous out here. Cant see a whole lot happening. Winds are kind of gusty. Thats not a major feature right now. All will change as the temperatures drop and the winds increase tomorrow afternoon. Check it out. Were below average. Average high in washington believe it or not is up to 47 degrees. Were way below average like 20 degrees or more. Tomorrow we deal with this polar plunge arctic outbreak and arctic front. Well see cloudiness increase through the day. Temperatures, though, ahead of the front could rise into the upper 30s. Early in the afternoon, well see the possibility of a few rain showers developing and quickly mixing with and turning into snow showers and the front goes by and then the cold winds will start accelerating, bringing in the colder air. Snow showers could give us a coating, maybe up to an inch in spots. Clear out tomorrow night and be very wind wri and very cold and that is going to be an issue through the late night, overnight Early Morning hours. Computer models say total accumulation from the snow showers, one to two, some areas could get close to an inch maybe. But anything significant is to be in the high elevations of the mountains way to the west of the metro area. Biggest picture will be wind chills, how it feels. Feel like 9 to 11 tomorrow morning and according to computer modeling through the day, wont be that much of a feature. It will really warm up. This is where we stop it at 7 00 tomorrow night, wind chills in the teens to low 20s. Not bad. Once that air moves in tomorrow and the winds accelerate tomorrow night, this is what it will feel like on sunday morning. Anywhere from 10 to 12 below zero and some areas are higher erer elevation with higher peak wind gusts will feel colder. Thats tough stuff. Thats dangerous to be at prolonged periods of time not properly dressed. Theres a wind chill watch in effect for our area. Theres also a high wind watch in effect for our area as we head through tomorrow evening through the overnight into sunday morning. So here you go with a look at temperatures and forecasts for the holiday weekend. Increasing cloudiness, rain showers, snow showers 39. Then turning windy and much colder. Only in the teens for highs with strong winds on sunday and then on monday washingtons birthday sunny and 28. Chance of light snow here again on tuesday. Downright uncomfortable.
