I was talking out of the building that night and my mom called my editor and had a limo pick me and the other interns up to take us out to a great dinner. There we are blowing out some candles. 21 years old, june 5, 1999. Theres the limo outside the boston globe, me flashing the 21 sign. A limo. I remember we all went to a bar afterwards and did what 21yearolds do. And it was a rough night. I woke up and kind of threw up over the side of the bed and fell back asleep for another 18 hours and woke up. You can imagine the smell of the room when vomit sits still for that many hours. Thats my classy birthday story. What are you talking about, willis, you were 70 in 1992. My story, i turned 21 when i was a senior in college. This is my red lobster uniform. I was coming home to the house i lived with, with seven girls. They threw me a surprise party. I had no idea. These are some of my nearest and dearest friends. Steve garcia in the middle. I went to a Small College in ohio, cedarville university. It was a dry town in a dry campus, as well. So we didnt drink. We just had a great time. High on life. We had such a good time. One of my best friends there in all the world, right there in the middle is a missionary you in estonia. Missy, chrissy, me in the middle, amy, shannon and christy on the bottom. That was nonalcoholic. Im pretty sure. Can i ask this question go ahead. No, go ahead. This is the last photo. What is it like to not drink on the 21st . Home people go out and we didnt when we were on campus, lets just put that way. And i grew up i was that little girl that would sit on my dads lap and he would give me a sip of beer. So to me drinking wasnt a huge deal. It was always there for me if i wanted and i didnt abuse it, until i was out of college. Wasnt a big deal for me either. I dont know what people see in this devils juice. Tim, what did you do . You must have been great, because i dont remember. It was a lot of fun. When i grew up, i grew up in iowa, and we could drink at 18. So we had a little jump on things. And that was great, because you learn to respect and drink in moderation and enjoy. There was nothing dry in spain. Dont make fun of me. Remember all of it. Every single amazing moment of my 21st birthday. Well be back. My name is marjorie reyes, and im a chief warrant officer. I love the fact that quicken loans provides va loans. Quicken loans understood the details and guided me through every step of the process. That was the year that bill clinton, slick willie took the office. The clintons still deeply involved in politics. Has it really been that long . This is also going to be the show that makes us feel really old. What does turning 21 really mean . Mr. Tim laird is in the house and the insomniac lounge is open and take it slow. One at a time. Were pacing. Were pacing. But first, a bit ol news. What medical authorities are calling the nations worst flu season in a decade. This flu season is getting under way a lot sooner than usual, which makes things that much worse. Abcs dr. Richard besser has the details. Reporter its an early brown trout yek. In arizona this time last year, there were 18 cases of flu. Today, 890. In new york, 84 last year. Today, 3,975. Massachusetts, 126 last year. Today, 3,736. We are seeing an average of over 600 cases a week of flulike illness. The volume is unusual for this time of year. Reporter from kentucky to North Carolina to texas. Horrible sore throat and ears. Just makes you feel bad for five to seven days. Its nasty. Reporter hospitals now seeing the influx. We are having an early flu season and its serious. Weve had a definite uptick in hospitalizations. Reporter there hasnt been an outbreak this early for ten years. And that year, the flu season was severe. We know that with just one sneeze, the virus can spread almost 20 feet in seconds. Youre infectious a full day before you show any symptoms. But why would this flu season be spreading so quickly, so soon . Is this a new flu, one that isnt in this years vaccine, one that were not immune to . So far the vaccine seems to be a good match. I cant remember it starting early in november. Reporter or more intrigues, could dry air be the culprit behind early outbreak . Its the most interesting new theory. In damp air, the water droplets take the flu to the ground quickly. In dry air, the virus floats in the air longer. All doctors know right now is that the flu is already here. The most important thing you can do, get the flu shot. It takes two weeks to work, but this flu season has a long way to go and it could be a rough one. Dr. Richard besser, abc news, new york. It was his reaction after people in the neighborhood complained about the removal of some trees. Now police say the graffiti might not look good, but it isnt a crime.
